Culture Corner The Mayan Calendar was invented by the Mayan people of Central America. This ancient civilization’s mathematically intricate calendar synchs with thee solar cycle and features a nclude festivities variety of “events.” These events include hristian that would later be mirrored by C Christian r, as events on our Gregorian calendar, en nt a well as major epochs that represent change in the calendar’s cycle. Perhaps the most popular event on the Mayan calendar is the zero date of the calendar’s long count, or the perceived “end” of the calendar. The Mayan calendar’s “katun” cycle—a time unit of 20 turns equal to 7,200 days—will turn over on December 21st, 2012 on the vee modern calendar. Many who have ng g studied this date associate the long osmic count with earthly pole shifts, cosmic A convergences and earth changes.. As ature, it the Mayan calendar is cyclic in na nature, ng g count just is meant to turn over after the long as our calendar does at the arrival of a new millennium; and this date represents the beginning of a new cycle on the calendar, much like the arrival of the year 2000 on our modern calendar. While some believe this date represents the end of the world, the majority of people in southeastern Mexico view the approaching Winter Solstice as a time of renewal. As Yeanet Zaldo, a tourism spokeswoman for the state of Quintana Ro Roo, puts it “For us, it is a message of hope.” For that reason, this region which is the heart of Maya territory, plans a year long cele e celebration. Mexico’s tourism agency exp p expects to draw 52 million visitors this ye e to the regions of Chiapas, Yucatan, year Q Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Campeche. T To put this in perspective, all of Mexico uusually hosts about 22 million tourists iin a year. Plans are already underway tto celebrate the coming Winter S Solstice. In the nearby archaeological si i of Izapa, Maya priests will burn site inc c incense, chant and offer prayers. In the trop p tropical jungle of Quintana Roo, people are pu u putting messages and photos in a time capsule that will be buried for 50 years. Maya priests and Indian dancers will perform rituals at the time capsu capsule ceremony. Yucatan state also has announced plans to complete the Maya Museum of Merida by next summer – so you’ll have a place to delve even deeper into the mysteries of this enchanting culture! 3 VDP Cancun News ◆ Summer 2012 Out and About Cancun Wet’n Wild Water Park – is the only water park in Cancun and Riviera Maya, and is located in Cancun’s hotel zone, boasting an expanse of 18 acres with an array of attractions for the entire family.
