As summer begins to wind down and
back-to-school excitement rises, many
families are looking for ways to spend
more quality time together, whether
they are spending the day at the beach
or shopping for school clothes. Dining
out in restaurants is a perfect way to do
so, while not having the work of
putting a nutritious meal together.
And, finding a healthful meal choice at
a restaurant takes less of an effort too
with the National Restaurant
Association’s Kids LiveWell Recipe
Challenge initiative.
The association notes the Kids LiveWell
initiative today includes 145 restaurant
brands in more than 42,000 locations,
committed to providing more healthful
meals for children. Nutritious meals
can be found at all types of restaurants,
from independent to chain to casual
dining to quick-service, fast casual and
fine dining. They’re even available in
museums and theme parks.

and soft taco that incorporate whole
wheat, lean proteins and vegetables

eating healthful foods.
All of the challenge’s recipes are
required to meet nutrition criteria set
forth by the initiative, which is based
on the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines.

white sugar, but I often challenge my students to use other

it saves more than 400 calories. Another option is using
prunes for butter, especially in brownies or other dark baked
goods – ¾-cup of prunes with ¼-cup boiling water, puree to

Web and do most basic
productivity activities.
When your child needs to use
technology to support their learning,
will you know what type of costeffective device to buy for maximum
learning benefit?
To choose the best one, think about
how they will use it in their learning.
Some projects will require work on a
PC, such as online assessments or
activities that use Microsoft Office
applications. If your child needs to
access the Internet for research or
online collaboration, a Chromebook
would work. With the Google Apps for
Education suite, Chromebooks allow
students and teachers the ability to
search the Web and do most basic
productivity activities.
“Chromebooks are stable, dependable
[and] provide easy access to learning
content,” says Heather Vogel, a
teacher at Battle Creek Middle School
in Minnesota. “No bells and whistles,
just a no-nonsense portal to a new,
highly personalized way of learning.”
If you’re thinking of buying a
Chromebook for your child, there is
plenty to consider, from speed and
price to capabilities and support.
Screen size varies. Parents looking
for a more generous screen may want
to check out the Toshiba, which offers
a 13-inch screen, and the HP with its
14-inch screen.
Durability. Some Chromebooks, such
as the Lenovo X131E, have been
developed and designed to be rugged.
Battery life. With longer battery life,
Chromebooks are less likely to turn
off mid-class. Intel-powered ones
boast a 57-percent longer battery life
while Web browsing, according to a
study by Principled Technologies.
Speed. A device’s processor should be
powerful enough to ensure students
can easily and quickly read textbooks
and take notes online, complete
homework, create presentations and
share files. Faster access means
students will spend less time waiting
and more time learning.
Graphics capabilities. Much of what
students do in class will be graphicsintensive (such as an anatomy
simulation), so their Chromebook
should run on a processor that will
allow for smooth, vibrant graphics
across all applications.
Price. Chromebooks can be especially
cost-effective. For example, the Acer
720 is a lighter and lower-cost device.
Support/resources. Choose a device
that offers students and parents
access to support and resources 24/7.

on a shoe-shopping trip to ensure they
are wearing footwear that will serve
them well through the rest of the active
days of summer as well as purchase

“Every parent knows the frustration of
trying to keep up with children who
grow quickly, and that rapid pace of
growth can mean children need new
shoes and socks every few months,” said
Dr. Matthew G. Garoufalis, a podiatrist
and past president of the American
Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).
To keep kids in shoes that properly fit
and protect their feet, the APMA offers
guidance to parents ready for a little
shoe shopping.
Take the child with you and have him or
her try on the shoes. Every shoe fits
differently, so even if you’re buying your
child’s correct size, the shoe still may

not be comfortable. Have the child try
on footwear with the socks or tights you
expect will be worn with the shoes.
Always measure a child’s foot before
buying new shoes. As children’s feet
grow so quickly, their shoe size can
literally change from month to month.
Shop late in the afternoon when feet are
largest, and make sure to fit the shoe to
the larger foot. Everyone’s feet swell by
the end of the day, and no one has feet
that are exactly the same size. One will
always be slightly larger. And, never buy
shoes that are too large or need a “breakin” period. Shoes should be comfortable
immediately.
Let kids have a say within reason.
“Of course parents will have to
guide children toward good choices,”
Garoufalis explained. “But, allowing kids
to have a say in the shoe-buying process
can help promote healthy foot habits
down the road.”

challenging.

facing many new
stressors can be
overwhelming.
Jill Smokler, author of the New York
Times bestselling book “Confessions
of a Scary Mommy” and “Motherhood
Comes Naturally (and Other Vicious
Lies),” shares tips and tricks on how
new moms can acclimate back into the
working world.
Plan ahead. After working a full day,
the last thing you’re going to feel like
doing is cooking dinner. My advice is to
embrace the wonder of the crockpot by
letting the machine fill your home with
the scent of a freshly cooked meal while
you’re miles away at work. You should
also lay out all your clothes for the
week on Sunday to avoid that moment
of tearing apart your closet when you
should already be in the car.
Another key plan is to have your baby’s
feeding agenda in place. According to a
survey conducted by Harris Interactive
on behalf of Perrigo Nutritionals, 42
percent of moms returning to work are
stressed about how they will feed their
baby. Some moms find substituting or
supplementing breast milk with infant
formula can make the transition into a
working mom much easier.
If you do use formula, be smart about
it. The FDA strictly regulates infant
formula to keep babies safe. For
example, formulas, like Walmart’s
Parent’s Choice Infant Formula, have to
meet strict FDA regulations. Plus, when
switching to store-brand formulas,
families can save up to $600 a year,
according to Perrigo Nutritionals.
Go shopping. Chances are you won’t
be fitting perfectly into your prepregnancy wardrobe by the time you
head back to work. Getting new clothes
that actually fit will do wonders for your
self-esteem. Just be sure to check your
shoulders before you leave the house,
as spit up can be more prominent on a
black business suit than an old T-shirt.
Give yourself a break. If you’re missing
your baby, allow yourself to have an
outburst every now and then. Just
remember to pick yourself up and get
back to work. Feeling guilty is a useless
emotion that isn’t going to help you
focus on your job or get you home
sooner to cuddle that baby of yours.

dental habits and a healthy smile.
That’s why NASCAR star Greg Biffle
and his wife Nicole, parents of a
2-year-old daughter, have joined
forces with the American Dental
Association’s (ADA) Give Kids A Smile
program to help deliver smiles for kids
around the country.
Parents can join Biffle and his wife to
put good dental health on the fast
track. The Biffles and the ADA offer
the following 10 tips for kids’ good
dental health:
1 2 Always brush for two minutes,
twice a day.
Make sure a dentist sees your
child as soon as his or her first
tooth emerges, but at least no later
than the first birthday.
3 Help children maintain a lifelong
healthy smile by providing them
with a well-balanced diet, limiting
snacks and ensuring that they brush
twice per day and floss once per day.
And, schedule regular dental checkups
for them.
4 Replace toothbrushes every
three to four months, or sooner
if bristles are worn.
5 Remember to floss. Flossing
removes plaque from between
teeth, where a toothbrush can’t reach.
6 Wearing a mouthguard can
prevent playground or skateboarding injuries.
7 A dental examination is as
important as booster shots and
should be a regular part of back-toschool preparation.
8 A painful tooth or chronic dental
problem can lead to difficulty
eating, speaking, learning and
concentrating.
9 Good oral health is part of good
overall health. The mouth is a
window into the health of the body.

Make brushing a daily game
to help encourage kids’
participation.
Biffle is helping to give kids a new
reason to smile. Through his work
with the ADA’s Give Kids A Smile
program, he supports an education
program for parents and children
through dental offices, community
events and media. During the year,

Blue light, a high-energy wavelength of light, is everywhere.
Emitted from the sun, fluorescent lights, and the screens of
tablets, phones, TVs and computers, blue light (research has
found) can disrupt the sleep cycle and cause damage to the
eyes over time. Unlike most wavelengths of light, blue light
can penetrate deep inside the tissue layers of one’s eyes
causing a greater risk for diseases like macular degeneration.
Just as most ultraviolet exposure occurs before 18 years of
age, the effects of blue light exposure are also more intense in
children since they lack the protective pigments of adults.

"Kids these days essentially grow up looking at a screen," says
Dr. Matt Alpert, VSP Vision Care optometrist. "There is a
growing concern among eye doctors that we're going to start
seeing long-term damage much earlier in life than ever
before." The problem lies with an increasing use of technology
without protection.
To filter out the harmful blue light before it reaches your eyes,
there have been advances made in protective eyewear. For

distort color and actually relax the eyes.
Decreasing blue light exposure in the evenings can help avoid
the unintended health consequences of our modern lifestyles.
Mitigating your exposure to blue light can mean turning off

protective eyewear at the office or at home when using your
digital devices.
Limiting your screen time is best, but if your occupation
requires a lot of computer use, remember to wear lenses that
offer blue light protection.

Smart children’s rooms that grow with time
Costs for furnishing and decorating a
child’s room can mount quickly, but
with careful planning and a few smart
purchases, the decisions you make for
that nursery or toddler’s room can
create a functional and clutter-free
space that grows with your child well
into the teen years.
Lorie Marrero, a certified professional
organizer and author of “The Clutter
Diet,” has partnered with the experts
at ClosetMaid to offer these tips for
creating a room that transitions with
your youngster as childhood gives way
to adolescence.
Invest wisely. Select furniture that
will adapt to your child’s needs in the
highest quality your budget allows.
For example, if you’re starting with a
nursery, choose a crib that converts
to a toddler bed and even a twin or

double bed years down the road.
Choose a dresser that can double as a
changing table during the early years,
with pulls that a toddler or young
child can easily manage.
Keep flexibility first. With each
purchase, consider how the item will
serve your child’s needs over a span
of several years. This is true even in
the closet, where space once allocated
for tiny garments must eventually
give way to larger and bulkier attire.
One solution, for example, is a multifunctional closet organization system,
such as ClosetMaid’s ShelfTrack,
which can be altered as children grow
and their needs change. For younger
children, maximize closet space by
utilizing three levels of wire shelving
for clothing. As they get older, reconfigure the design by adjusting shelving
or adding baskets and shoe racks.
