“My style has
been called
bohemian
chic. It’s
really that I
love to dress
up. I love
feminine
things.”

...BEING CREATIVE
The five women on these pages make getting dressed an exercise in self-expression.
For Margherita Missoni, style is all about
creativity—wearing unexpected pairings of pieces rich in texture, color and
pattern in fabrics like the ones above.
This look’s style icon: sixties trendsetter Talitha Getty, right
What Missoni can’t live without: Circle skirts, like this one from Anthropologie (a favorite store), left. “I’ve
been wearing them since I was
13 and my grandmother let me
wear hers.” Also, the gold Missoni
bag she’s carrying at right.
Other mix-it-up ingredients:
1. Patterned knits.
Sweater, Dries Van
Noten. 2. Colorful
shoes. Shoes,
Hollywould.
“ My favorite
way to wear
a runway
outfit
is to add
vintage
and cheap
pieces to
the look—
then
it’s mine.”

ING THE CLASSICS
What makes a look a classic? Aerin Lauder
can sum it up in three adjectives: feminine,
elegant, timeless. “If your clothes can be
defined by those words, you’ll always look
pulled together,” she says.
This look’s style icon: Katharine Hepburn
What Lauder can’t live without: Jewelry to
dress up the simplest clothes. “It makes all
the difference—big earrings or a great ring
or bangles,” she says. Ring, below, Mimí.
Other classics to own: 1. A well-tailored
coat. Coat, Helmut Lang. 2. A structured
bag. Bag, Marc Jacobs. 3. A serious
watch. Watch, Louis Cartier. 4. The new
classic shoe: Pointy-toe flats. Lauder
loves these by Jimmy Choo.

dress now that
I have children:
I wear flats a

“I do own a lot of Chanel bags.
I like them because they look old
even when they’re not.”
“I’m crazy for anything from another era,”
says Drea de Matteo. “I wear my mother’s
clothes from the fifties and sixties—love
them. Even when I buy designer stuff now, I
store it away until no one else is wearing it.”
What de Matteo can’t live without:
Vintage jeans, cowboy boots and T-shirts
from the East Village store she owns, Filth
Mart. And she loves to wear one piece that’s
a little bit masculine, like the fedora, left,
with sexy-retro looks. Hat, Hat Attack.
New pieces that have
a sexy-retro feel:
1. Peep-toe heels, Cesare Paciotti. 2. A satin
blouse, Tracy Reese.
Who else loves the
look: Gwen Stefani,
left, looking very similar to de Matteo, below

Model Liya Kebede personifies a cardinal
rule of style: You don’t have to be dressed to
the nines to look chic. Just pair your jeans
or khakis with something from the noncasual
side of your closet (instead of grabbing that
same old tee). A special top, great earrings, a
cool jacket—add one and your work is done.
What Kebede can’t live without:
1. Her Converses. “I got a really great pair
in Japan that I wear with everything.”
Sneakers, Converse. 2. The Moroccan-style
tunics she collects when she travels.
“They’re chic and comfortable,” she says.
Tunic, Graham Kandiah.
To be stylishly casual, you’ll need:
3. Fun jewelry. Earrings, Manon Von
Gerkan Jewelry. 4. Heels. They’re
sexier than sneaks or flats. Shoes,
Christian Louboutin. 5. A colorful accessory. Hat, H&M. 6. A
jacket that’s special enough to
wear to work. Jacket,
Anna Sui.

Who understands playing around with your
look better than a rock ’n’ roller? It’s part of
the job description. “I have so much fun
figuring out what to wear to awards
shows,” says Fergie. “I want
something that represents me, that
you won’t see on anyone else.”
This look’s style icons: Madonna
