Hiking and trekking in Barcelona
Hiking and trekking in Barcelona Els 3 monts is the hiking and trekking trail that connects the natural parks of Barcelona - El Montseny, Sant Llorenç del Munt and Montserrat by means of a signposted itinerary divided in 6 stages. Along its 106 km, hikers and trekkers will discover a gentle progression of the changing shapes of nature - it appears silent and eternal at Montseny, wild and abrupt at Sant Llorenç i l’Obac and magical and capricious near the slopes of Montserrat. Tourist Office 2008-2010:: Pla de Foment Els 3 monts Consorci de Turisme del Vallès Occidental Ctra. Today some of these historically significant buildings are now home to exceptionally high-quality hotels and restaurants. Along the way you will be surprised by many examples of curious dry stone architecture, a testimony to the rural history of inland Catalonia. The dry stone constructions were erected using materials taken from their surroundings. The stones were used without being dressed or cut and were piled on top of each other without any kind of mortar to hold them together. Spirituality The Els 3 Monts route ends at Montserrat - a key location in Catalan spiritual life. Its Monastery has been home to hundreds of monks living an ascetic existence, but it was also an extremely important enclave for pilgrims from all over Europe, who came to pray to the Virgin and atone for their sins. Monasterio de Montserrat, modernismo en La Garriga, Tinajas de piedra seca, Masía l’Agustí Marquet de les Roques, Sant Llorenç Savall, stage 4 Gastronomy: Alubias “del ganxet” Gastronomy Gastronomy is another of the route’s strengths, where the savoire faire of the region’s chefs has succeeded in combining the essence of the exclusive flavours of the local produce with the touch of genius that has situated Catalan cuisine amongst the world’s best. From the Els 3 Monts region’s typical cuisine, various dishes stand out - mushrooms from the Montseny massif, the local varieties of beans and chick peas, known as mongetes del Ganxet and cigronets de Mura, the Pla de Bages Denominación de Origen wine and the prestigious farmhouse curd cheese made at Montserrat. DO Bages Wines Montseny Mushrooms (Bolets del Montseny) Montserrat Curd Cheese and Honey (Mel i mató de Montserrat) Ganxet Vllès Beans (Mongetes del Ganxet Vallès) Mura Chickpeas (Cigronets de Mura) adventure: adventure If your trip focuses on adventure, the Els 3 Monts setting offers an orology that is perfect for combining hiking with rock climbing, vias ferratas, mountain biking, potholing, horse riding, etc. There is a wide range of activities that can be practised in the open air and count on professional experts, who will get you started and will accompany you so that you can enjoy yourself in complete safety. The average temperature is 15ºC and the average temperature throughout winter is around 6ºC and 23ºC in summer. This is a hill walking itinerary involving mountains of low altitude and little technical difficulty. However, the route poses considerable differences in altitude and in order to the journey in 5 or 6 stages a minimum level of physical fitness is required. In the Els 3 Monts region, a temperate Mediterranean climate predominates with the absence of a harsh winter marked by low temperatures. The rainfall is very variable depending on the season of the year, being more pronounced in spring and autumn. Total distance: 106 Km Accumulated altitude change: 3715 metres Total estimated time: 30 hours Recommended season We recommend spring and autumn as the seasons most appropriate to do Els 3 Monts, both because of the temperature and the scenery, although due to the mildness of the Mediterranean climate it can be done all year during mild winters and summers.
