FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT’S DESK
Scott Haney,
CVARC President N0GUD
Fellow CVARC members,
I have mixed feelings as I write this. I am happy to serve
as interim President for one of the best ham radio clubs
I’ve ever joined. We have a great group here, with skills
in nearly every aspect of amateur radio. I can assure you
that the local amateur community is currently held in
good esteem with our local governments and served
agencies -- that’s no accident. I know everyone will continue to support club and public service activities in the
future.

Marty also during his “free time” has been playing with
a new rig that he just purchased as a result of his trip to
the Dayton Hamfest this year - - his new Apache Labs
ANAN-10E QRP transceiver. Marty will give us some
insight on its performance and will also give us some insight on the HackRF Blue Software Defined Transceiver
that’s his next toy in the SDR sandbox. Finally, Marty
will give an update of his famous RTL-SDR dongles. In
addition he has had a lot of interest in his RTL dongles
for HF and other bands and new software that is now
available for the RTF/SDR dongles. If you are interested
in cheap RTL/SDR dongles this is the presentation to

CVARC@rf.org email reflector currently has a size limit
of 9.99 megabytes on an email message, including attachments. There is no restriction on the type of file
that can be attached.
9.99 MB is more than enough for messages we have
forwarded in the past. I have heard complaints from
some members in the past, but this can be traced to the
member’s Internet Service Provider. Some ISP’s reject
an email messages larger than 2 MB. Many ISPs reject a
message if the attachment is a .zip file containing an executable script. Some ISPs reject a Word attachment
with embedded executable macros. Some ISPs occasionally put messages from rf.org on their spam list, and
have to be reminded that rf.org is legitimate.
The email message size limit can be changed to unlimited if necessary, but I recommend against this, as some
members rely on dial-up service. 9.99 Mb will take almost 4 minutes to receive on dial-up.
As an example, the Bandspread newsletter can be from
2 MB to almost 5 MB in size, but these are not emailed
through rf.org.
One hint for reducing the size of email attachments:
.pdf files tend to be much larger than the equivalent Microsoft Word .doc file (remove macros). .bmp and .tiff
images are several times larger than the same .jpg image
file. You can convert images with Microsoft Paint.

Field Day
CVARC Members,
Submitted by Tim Busch N0CKR
Thanks and congrats to all who played a role in the success of the Eastern Iowa Field Day 2015 event. We believe we had the largest FD presence in the U.S., with
19 transmitters, not including the satellite station and
the Get On The Air (GOTA) station. The next largest
was the traditional largest organization, W3AO, with 17
transmitters. Murphy’s Law was alive and well, with a
generator failure Sunday morning followed by a thunderstorm that shut down all operations It was a great
event, with lots of learning, socializing, and QSOs.

Soldering Iron Temperature Control
Submitted by Bob Klaus N0YWB
This simple project can be done in an hour, costs about
$10 to $15 dollars in local parts.
Most soldering irons run too hot. There are times when
you need that heat -like soldering a PL-259 connector.
But most of the time, too hot a soldering iron tip means
the solder on the tip will dross (oxidize) and needs to be
cleaned and re-tinned frequently. Too hot a temperature
can actually prevent solder from whetting onto some plated surfaces. Lead-free solder is especially finicky about
temperature.
A light dimmer can make a cheap soldering iron perform
as well as the more expensive units with a built-in temperature adjust. After determining some crucial temperatures and marking the dimmer dial with these settings,
soldering will become easier.
Determine the setting where solder just begins to melt:
Set the knob high until the solder melts on the soldering iron tip, then back the knob down until solder fails to
melt, then very gradually bring up the temperature and
keep testing until the solder just begins to melt. Mark this
as the idle temperature. Repeat this process with each
soldering iron you work with. Repeat this process if you
also use lead-free or silver solder. The temperature will
be higher and more critical. Start the soldering iron with
the knob turned all the way up, then back it down to the
idle temperature a minute later after the iron heats up. If
making many solder joints, keep the iron above the idle
temperature. Experiment and learn.
If you are new to soldering, I recommend starting with
lead-bearing solder to build up your skill. 63% tin, 37%
lead is the easiest to work with and worth the money. Mastering good solder joints using lead-free solder (typically
tin-silver-copper alloy) is much more demanding. As a
hobbyist, your contribution of lead to the environment
is small. Beginners starting with lead-free solder can become frustrated and never become good at soldering.
The thinner the rosin-core solder, the easier to use for
through-hole or surface-mount soldering, but of course
you pay for it. The .062 inch diameter rosin core solder at
the hardware store is too coarse for surface-mount technology but OK for soldering PL-259 connectors. Radio
Shack 64-005, is .032 inches in diameter and is barely acceptable for SMT. I found a pound spool of .015” 63/37
Kester rosin core in a hamfest junk bin. It is as fine as sewing thread. Costs over $30 today. I’m spoiled. I will never
go back to anything coarser for SMT.
The soldering iron temperature control made from a light
dimmer and wiring diagram. A ceramic wall tile makes a
cheap and indestructible work surface for soldering.
Remember, lead is poisonous, especially to children’s nervous systems. Don’t breathe solder fumes. Run a small
fan at your work area. Clean up any solder remnants from
your work table and wash your hands when finished.
The controller is made from an outdoor outlet box, cover
plate, grounded extension cord and light dimmer module.
All can be purchased for under $15 at the local hardware
store. The wide blade of the extension cord plug and the
wide slot of the extension cord receptacle go to the common neutral (white) connection. The narrow blade of the
extension cord plug and the narrow slot of the extension
cord receptacle go to the line and load connections respectively. The round ground pin on the extension cord goes
to the ground connection on the dimmer module.

Iowa ARES HF Digital Net
Good Day:
We need your help with topics. If you have a specific subject that you would like to present in a future show, send
an email to tom@W5KUB.com.
I’d like to remind everyone interested that Tuesday Join us for fun and interesting technology discussions.
Night at 7pm Central time is the weekly Iowa ARES We’ll see you on the webcast!
digital net. This net meets on a frequency of 3572.5 +/-.
Tom Medlin, W5KUB
and uses Olivia 8/500.
We do take check in by Iowa ARES District so that is
really the only thing you would have to know, and have
a digital program loaded (DM-780, FLDigi, MultiPSK
to name a few, and free download). And the other thing
needed besides the HF radio, is a sound card interface.
Without the interface, though, you still should be able
to listen if you have the software.
If you can and wish to, come join us tomorrow evening.

B-29 ‘FIFI’ Announces Summer Tour Stops
Cedar Rapids, IA, July 30-August 2
Submitted by Mike Weaver K0BGP
PRESS RELEASE -DALLAS – April 6, 2015 — The
Commemorative Air Force AirPower History Tour, featuring the iconic Boeing B-29 Superfortress FIFI, will
visit airports in eastern and Midwest United States this
summer. The season starts May 8 in Manassas, Virginia
where the B-29 Superfortress and B-24 Liberator will
be two of many Commemorative Air Force (CAF) airplanes flying in the Arsenal of Democracy Flyover in
Washington, D.C. The CAF will have the largest number of participating aircraft at the event which commemorates the 70th anniversary of VE day – the day
the Allies declared victory in Europe during World War
II. (More information about this event can be found at
www.WW2flyover.org.) Following the VE Day flyover
the B-29 and B-24 will visit Baltimore, MD; Farmingdale, NY; Morristown, NJ; and Reading, PA. Other aircraft
traveling with the tour include the SB2C Helldiver, P-51
Mustang, and C-45 Expeditor. The B-24 returns home
to Texas after Reading, but the B-29 and other touring
aircraft will continue on to Binghamton, Rochester and
Albany in New York; Nashua, NH; and Hartford, CT before a short maintenance break in Lexington, KY. The
Boeing B-29 Superfortress, first flown in 1942, began
active service in 1944 and is perhaps best known as the
aircraft whose missions over Japan helped bring about
the end of World War II. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, with longer range
and greater bomb loads. The B-29 was also used in the
Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the
BANDSPREAD July 2015
U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s.The year 2015 marks
FIFI’s 41st year of flight with the Commemorative Air
Force. The airplane, rescued and restored by the CAF in
the early 1970s, is a regular feature at airports and airshows all across the country. In fact, the B-29 Squadron
of the CAF was the first group to begin touring historic
war birds in 1974. Now, 41 years later, FIFI still barnstorms the country from coast to coast bringing the
sights, sounds and smells of World War II aviation history to audiences across the United States.Visitors pay
a nominal admission fee at the gate at most tour stops.
All of the airplanes will be on static display when they
are not flying. B-29 cockpit tours are included in the admission price and rides are available in most of the airplanes. Ride prices range from $75 to $1895. Ride reservations may be made at www.AirPowerTour.org where
additional information about each tour stop can also be
found. http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbirds-news/
