What to do with all these paintings? Alas, I do not know! They are upstairs, downstairs And in my studio. Still I know I shouldn’t I really need to stop But something just compels me I’m like a spinning top. I really cannot help it There is truly no more space There is a canvas on the easel And I paint another face. The colors are so pretty They stir me to the core I love the shapes and rhythm So, there’s room for just one more! The League has a long record of constructive help, such as setting standards of quality for pigments and promoting competent, understandable art. Categories of membership in the AAPL are as follows: Elected Artist, Fellow, Fellow Maxim Cum Laude, Signature, Associate Artist, Student Artist, Life Member, Patron, Benefactor and Advisor to the Board. Elected Artist Members ($60) are those who have been approved by the Membership Committee of the National Board of Directors. Benefits in this most prestigious art club include exhibition opportunities in Member Shows and Member Online Theme Shows, receiving all Prospectuses, a Member Card, the Grand National Exhibition Catalog, Bi-Annual Newsletters, participation in the online Member Gallery, AAPL Grape Vine e-mails and invitations to the annual reception and all art demonstrations. Fellows receive the same benefits as an Elected Artist Member, however, the artist must be accepted in the Grand National Exhibition for three years, not necessarily consecutively. The Fellow is awarded a Fellow Certificate and a Fellow membership card and letter from the AAPL President. Fellow Maxima Cum Laude (Lat. very great honor) receive the same benefits as an Elected Artist Member, however, must be accepted in the Grand National Exhibition for five years and win two AAPL awards. They will be awarded the Fellow Maxima Certificate and a Fellow Maxima membership card. Also, the FMCL will be eligible to advance to an AAPL Signature Membership. Signature Member receive the same benefits as an Elected Artist Member and will have the honor to place AAPL after their name on all their works. This honor is available only to Fellow Maxima Cum Laude members. Criterion: Winner of an AAPL Grand National award, two Frank C. Wright Memorial Grand National awards, and Board selected award of distinction. The Signature Membership will be voted on by FMCL, and the National Board unanimously. Associate Artist Members ($40) are those who support representational and traditional realism. Associate Members are entitled to: Complimentary Grand National Exhibition catalog, Newsletters, AAPL Grape Vine, Membership Card, Annual National meeting and Member Gallery. Artists may join and enter as a member in the Grand National open juried exhibition for one year. The Artist must, in the following year, submit an application for Elected Artist Membership or remain a Patron supporter of American Artists Professional League. Artists who have applied for Elected Membership status and are rejected will be given a one year Associated Artists Membership and may reapply at a later time. Student Membership ($35) receive a Studiosum Membrum Card, single entry fee for Future Art Masters Exhibition (FAME), Listing in Grand National Catalog, Newsletters, Grape Vine e-mails, eligibility for a scholarship if attending an accredited school, and the Presidents letter if accepted to “FAME”. LIFE Member ($1000) allows Lifetime membership as an Artist or Art Supporter. Advisor to Board is a non-voting member, required to attend three Board meetings annually and hold skills deemed vital to American Artists Professional League. Patrons and Benefactors are those who consider our high objectives worthy of backing and would like to make a donation to our efforts through the American Artists Fund, the charitable, educational adjunct of the AAPL. THE AMERICAN ARTISTS PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE In January 1928, F. Ballard Williams, Assistant Treasurer of the National Academy of Design in New York, called a meeting of fifteen members of the Salmagundi Club. The purpose: to discuss the need for a national organization to meet the increasing interests in traditional realism in American art. Most attending were prominent academicians of their day. The attendees all agreed that an organization designed to protect artists’ interests and promote traditional American art was necessary and The American Artists Professional League (AAPL) was born. In its ongoing effort to promote and encourage artists specializing in realistic art forms, the AAPL has staged a Grand National Exhibition for over 70 years. Each year, hundreds of applicants from all 50 states in all media submit their work for review by a selection committee consisting of professional artists in the fields of oil, watermedia, pastel and graphics and sculpture. By Board resolution in 1958, the AAPL created the American Artists Fund, an arm of the organization specifically designed for educational and charitable purposes. Through private and corporate donations and contributions to the Fund, the AAPL sponsors its Grand National Exhibition and awards scholarships to college level students studying American art. This year, the AAPL will award over $16,000 in prizes to exhibitors and has marked $2,000 for college scholarships. The AAPL first focused on the issue of obtaining commissions of official portraits for American Artists. By using its national stature, the AAPL influenced a rider to a Congressional Bill stipulating that all official portraits paid for with taxpayers’ dollars were to be painted by American artists, a fact that remains in effect to this day. The AAPL was also instrumental PETER ROSSI in establishing and securing the U.S. Bureau of President, AAPL Standards original set of government-sponsored standards for artists’ colors, updated in 1962. 76 American Artists Fund This year, the American Artists Professional League has presented more than $16,000 in awards and six gold medals through contributions made to its American Artists Fund. The AAPL also conducts a Scholarship Program through the Fund, and this year has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to deserving American Art students. If you would like to assist the American Artists Professional League in its continuing efforts to recognize, encourage and support traditional American art and Artists, please consider making a contribution to the Scholarship Fund, establishing a Memorial Fund in honor of a loved one, or making a testamentary bequest to the American Artists Fund.
