Schlössli Area Development Project in Burgdorf
The Schmid Mansion (built in 1869/70) is a witness of a historical period. Along with the pleasure
grounds it was one of the first edifices north of the railway.
The area
As early as during construction of the mansion named
for the industrialist Schmid, high priority was accorded to
groundbreaking, to the quality of residential use and to the
gardens. Time has greatly changed the surroundings, and
the lush greenery has made the mansion, protected as a
historical monument, almost invisible. Nevertheless, the
characteristics of the property have been preserved and the
landowners have decided to develop the area and to implement new projects.
commercial uses on the ground floor.
The Schmid Mansion is being refurbished and put to residential use compatible with an old building, thus permitting
generation-spanning living styles. The qualitative features of
the original garden layout are being restored and will permit

Location and use
Directly next to the railway station, within walking distance

the railway station underpass provides a passage to Kirchbergstrasse for pedestrians and thus gives an advantage to
The next steps
The expert committee for building and exterior design of
Burgdorf as well as the cantonal office for the preservation of
monuments have accepted the building plan of architect Walter
Hunziker and the Marti Generalunternehmung AG. Now, the
building rules developed for the Schlössli project are passed to
the right of participation. If everything goes as planned, the building plans will be legally binding by summer, 2017 and the town
will be able to examin and grant a general planning application.
