This donation was made possible by the concern and generosity of many people, to who we owe many thanks. Presently, there are 38 Union County children being treated at the Greenville hospital. Presenting the award to Union County Shrine Club President R. V. Theo, is Illustrious Sir, George Thompson, Chairman of the Hospital Board, and Tracy McReynolds, Director of Donor Development. Union County Shrine Club presents Shriners Hospital with large check Article from uniondailytimes.com UNION COUNTY — The children being treated at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville got a very special gift shortly before Christmas from the Union County Shrine Club. Club Trustee Julian Ivey announced Friday that during its Christmas party on Dec. 14, the Union County Shrine Club made a donation of $20,000 to the Greenville Shriners Hospital for Children. Ivey said the club was able to raise and donate these funds after winning a contest sponsored by Upper South Carolina Shrine Temple in Mauldin. The prize was a 2000 Mustang convertible which Ivey said the club then placed for sale on eBay. He said the car was purchased for $23,000. The funds raised from the sale of the car were then divided with $20,000 being donated by the club to the Shriners Hospital for Children; $2,000 going to the Shrine Bowl Game; and $1,000 to the Mauldin Temple. “We are real, real happy, we are thrilled, really thrilled with this,” Ivey said. “That’s the largest donation ever made by the Union County Shrine Club to the hospital. This donation was made possible by the concern and generosity of many people to whom we owe many thanks.” According to its website, the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, is “a 50-bed pediatric orthopaedic hospital. Our familycentered approach to care is designed to support the whole family during the acute and reconstructive phases of a child’s injury. Located in Greenville, S.C., our hospital treats children from all over the country and around the world, and has unique relationships with some of the top hospitals and universities in the world.” It also states that the mission of the hospital is to: •Provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other special healthcare needs within a compassionate, family-centered and collaborative care environment. •Provide for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals. •Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families. It further states that the hospital carries out its mission “without regard to race, color, creed, sex or sect, disability, national origin or ability of a patient or family to pay.” The vision of the hospital is to “become the best at transforming children’s lives by providing exceptional healthcare through innovative research, in a patient and family centered environment.” Ivey pointed out that the children receiving this treatment includes children from Union County. He added that it is the goal of the Shriners of the Union County Shrine Club — and their fellow Shriners throughout Upper South Carolina — to support the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville and its mission. “There are 38 children from Union County being treated at the hospital,” Ivey said. “There are 53 members in the Union County Shrine Club and all that we do as a club we do for the Shriners Hospital in Greenville.” JANUARY 2014 HEJAZ COMMENTATOR PAGE THREE The POTENTATE'S MESSAGE Greetings Nobles, Please join me in praising God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Koon Potentate The Ladies Auxiliary held their Annual Christmas party for the outpatients of Shriners Hospitals for Children on December 8th. The turnout was just wonderful! The Ladies had the Club looking a lot like Christmas, along with Santa, Mrs. Claus, Santa’s helper and a lot of presents for the kids. Santa made sure each child received a present and lots of time with him. The food served by the Ladies was just wonderful. As you can see from the pictures, the Club was beautiful and a very good crowd was on hand, we always would like to have more, but Thanks to all who came out and made this a great day for all the kids! What would we do without our faithful ones who are always there helping out!! A group picture of our Ladies Auxiliary along with a picture of our outpatient children are shown, wishing all a Happy New Year! Thanks to Chaplain Buck Beckham for always being so faithful. Joseph L. Huntley was a soft-spoken man of few words but when he did speak, people listened. During his amazing 96 years, Mr. Huntley, a long-time Hejaz Shriner, accomplished many things, but the legacy that he left to benefit the children of the Greenville Shriner’s Hospital is one that will live on for generations beyond his life. On November 22, 2013, the Estate of Joseph L. Huntley represented by great-niece Sherri Drake McCoy and her husband, Ron McCoy, along with Mr. Huntley’s attorney Steve Yon, proudly presented a magnificent gift to hospital administrator, Randy Romberger and Chairman of the Board of Governors, George Thompson. (Pictured top left photo) Mr. Huntley’s wish was that his legacy gift have a profound impact on the life-changing care the children at Shriners Hospitals for Children –Greenville receive and indeed it will. His thoughtful and selfless gesture was borne of a man with exemplary character and devoted service to others. Born and raised in Western N.C. Mr. Huntley served in the Army in World War II. After returning from the war he moved to Pelzer, SC. He started his own business and in the early 1960’s was able to build a home on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, SC. He joined the Greenville chapter of the Hejaz Temple of Greenville, SC in 1958. He was a member of the Motorcycle Escort Unit for many years and was Captain of the Escort Unit in 1967. Uncle Joe, as he was known to his family, realized the many hours and days the brotherhood spent away from their families to support the cause for burned and crippled children. In the late 1960’s he built an addition to their home for the soul purpose to entertain his Shrine brothers and their families to a relaxing day at the lake. It is the hope of Mr. Huntley’s family, that his gift will inspire others to remember the Shriners Hospitals in their estate planning. To learn more about how you can leave a legacy to help the children, please contact Tracy McReynolds, Director of Development at (864) 255-7850. JANUARY 2014 HEJAZ COMMENTATOR PAGE SEVEN The Toy Run for 2013 appears lean, more than usual. Because the hospital requests electrical computerized toys instead of the usual type, which are more expensive and in some cases, harder to come by, i-pods, you-pods, we-pods, they-pods, handheld games, etc. So...if anyone sends toys next year, try to send the computerized type. I ask the next time you are at the hospital, take a look behind the statue in the front. There is a plaque, which lists the various Temples and Units that helped to build the new unit. And when you look at it, you can’t help but feel humble. You know why the Shriners and all the various Units work so hard to keep the doors open. Congratulations to Barry Koon, our new Potentate, Jason Turner, our new Oriental Guide and to Champ Champion our new Recorder. First off, I want to thank Ike Ferguson for the BIG shoes that he left for me to fill. Ike, you did a great job as President in 2013. With the help of our new Nobles that were created in 2013 and our seasoned Nobles (us older guys) I hope to have an equally good year in 2014. Oconee County created over 40 new Nobles in 2013 and many went on to become Hillbillies. You should be proud! Welcome to all of you! I look forward to seeing you all in 2014. As most of you know, I have tried to keep our membership up to date with emails regarding Temple and Club activities. If you want me to add you to my list, please email me at aperk@bellsouth.net or call me 864-303-9434. As a reminder, we meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00. Our Board Meetings are the following Tuesday at 6:30 and are open to all Nobles. As I stated at our January meeting, we have made a number of improvements to our club over the years and there are a few that I want to accomplish in the coming year. With your help we can accomplish great things in 2014. We will have a Daytona 500 party at the club on February 23 to welcome in the beginning of the NASCAR season. Bring finger food. A big thank you goes out to Ricky Watkins and James Lyle for restoring our float to one that our Club can be proud of. It sure looked great in the Shrine Bowl parade! On another note, we are having a Spring $10,000 Dance, hopefully Check Out Hejaz Website Webmasters Luke and Anne Thompson are doing a fantastic job with the Hejaz Website. Check it out! PAGE SIXTEEN HEJAZ COMMENTATOR JANUARY 2014 Hillbilly Clan #2 Outhouse #1 Illustrious Sir Gary Parsons was on hand at the regular meeting on December 5th at Crescent Shrine Club and presented the Club President, John Black the 1st Place Award plaque for the top Club Onion Sales for 2013 and to thank everyone who participated in any way to help with the onions. The Club was able to sell over 7,000 lbs this year. Special Thanks also to the Chester Shrine Club for helping with the onions. By: Randall Roof To all of you that have supported the Outhouse this year and the years passed, thank you so much. Because of your support we donated $9,413 this year. Since the Outhouse was formed back in March of 1997, we have donated $191,238. We are looking for that $200,000 mark. With God’s help and yours, we will make it this year! We have set Friday & Saturday, August 1&2 as Hillbilly Day in Flop-Eye. I hope that you will mark your calendar to be with us that day. On that day we will be giving away a Baikal, 410 Over & Under Shotgun or $500. The tickets are $2 each, 3 for $5, 7 for $10, 40 for $50 and 90 for $100. A lot of you already know the story, but for the ones that don’t, here we go again. If you guy $50 or $100 worth, you will have a chance to win another $50 or $100 worth of tickets. This drawing will be Friday, August 1, 2014. For the ones that buy $50 or $100 worth you will have your name and town put on the Board of Honor at the Club plus in the Hejaz Commentator, and also the Hillbilly News. If you like, you can be anonymous. Last year we had 18 to buy $100 worth and 15 to buy $50 worth. I hope we can top that this year, with your support we can! This is a Shrine Hospital Project. Make your check out to: Outhouse #1 and mail to: Outhouse #1, PO Box 367, Great Falls, SC 29055. I was talking with Cuzzin’ John Myers at Clan #82, Omar Temple and he told me that they are planning to buy Omar Temple another van to take the kids to the Shrine Hospitals. This makes 7 they have bought. Clan #82 will be having their annual St. Patrick Day dance and give away on March 15th at Omar Temple. If you want to have a good time, great food, and help out the kids, you don’t want to miss this. For more information, you can write: Brother John Myers, 434 Commonwealth Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466. What did you think about the new Shrine magazine? I like it. It’s a way to let Nobles that are traveling know what’s going on. But the only way it will work is if someone lets them know. The only way right now is the Hillbilly news, it goes nationwide and to Canada. “Only one life, twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” If we invest wisely, it will pay dividends throughout eternity. Bless each one of you! Our Tuesday night Ladies Auxiliary Dinner starts at 6:30 and at $7.00 per meal you cannot afford to pass this up and as you get your meal please take the time to say thank you. Ladies we do appreciate you. Let us never forget the reason we are here and we should feel privileged to be able to be in a position to help the very young individuals that will be the leaders of our future. Not one of our children requested to have the abnormalities that were presented to them. Our goal should be to give as much of ourselves that is possible. I am not talking of materialistic items! If they can’t or don’t know how we should teach them how to smile because Laughter is Timeless. We should provide instruction for them to learn because Imagination has no age. Lastly we should tutor them, talk with them, answer their questions, and provide positive thoughts and allow them to think because Dreams are Forever. May God Bless You All, Don Crescent Shrine Club Nobles Benny Patterson (left) and Billy Workman were at the 77th Annual Shrine Bowl Parade. They brought with them a few of their best friends to ride along. The kids always enjoy the big green frog, hearing him “croak”. Thanks Nobles for what you do for the kids! Randall On behalf of the members of the Golden Strip Shrine Club, President Ray Shafer and Roy Whitmire presented a donation to SHC-G on January 10th in the amount of $8,600. This brings their total fundraising for 2013 to $10,000! Five Hillbillies Make Four! The number of parades listed for this day were 11. That means 11 towns had their Christmas parades scheduled on the same day. The time of the parades were scheduled for 11am, 2pm, 4pm and the last at 6pm. So, five Hillbillies decided to make 4 parades in 3 counties in one day, which has not been done before. The most were 3 parades in one day. Calling the parade officials and letting the Hillbillies near the front allowed them to finish first, load their AModels and travel to the next parade, unload, line up at or near the front of the parade, finish in time to load up and tow their veehickles to the next parade, etc... The weather was damp and overcast with rain. The Fast Five were; Barry Kraft from Hillbilly Clan #82, Omar Shrine; Tony Pace, Body Thomas, Don and Donnie Ruff, from Hillbilly Clan #2, Hejaz Shrine. While the Fast Five were in these parades, the rest of Hillbillies were in other parades, cover as many as they could. WHEEEEW!!! This is our busiest time of the year!
