For the past 25 years the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii, a nonprofit agency has been a leader in providing “Prevention through Education” programs in the community. The 12th Annual Honolulu Star-Advertiser HiLife Backyard Jam is a free-to-the public, family orientated event to raise community awareness about substance abuse. The resource fair provided 23 community service agencies and organizations to participate in Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month. Each service agency and organization highlighted their programs and offered interactive activities for adults and keiki. Participants received educational information on substance abuse and ongoing community issues. Families enjoying the festivities exceptional support from volunteers A large part of Backyard jam’s success is due to the faithfulness and commitment of its volunteers. Hawaii National Guard’s Counter Drug Support Unit provided tents for the event. Youth support was provided by the Explorers, Kapolei High School Social Norms Project, TeenLink & Ewalution who staffed activities including a photo booth, friendship bracelet making, helping with entertainment hospitality tent and passing out resources. Juvenile Drug Court youth volunteers supervised bouncers, assisted the resource booth, and helped with clean up. The awesome event logo was created and designed by HiLIfe and the event t-shirts were printed by Butigroove. Radio stations as KRATER 96, KCCN FM 100, POWER 104.7 and Hawaiian 105 KINE ran event PSA’s and provided our event DJ. olo pono awards As part of Backyard Jam the Ola Pono and Kendyl Ko Hau Blossom Awards were presented to those unsung heroes in our state who make a meaningful contribution for the safety and well being for a drug-free community. This year’s award recipients were Oceanic Time Warner Cable and the Kapolei High School Social Norms Media Project. Emceeing the award presentation was Ms. Kim Gennaula, President of AUW. Award presenters were Senator Mike Gabbard, House of Representatives Sharon Har, Lt. Col. Tamah-Lani Noh, Mrs. Kelcey Ko and Ms. Kendys Min. amazing entertainment Big mahalo to all of the amazing performers! Kapolei High School Social Norms Media Project Our entertainment committee provided a wonderful lineup of local entertainers powered by Precision Sound. Local bands Kapena, Vaihi, Pohaku, Lehua Kalima and Shawn Pimental entertained the crowd with their music. Thank you also to our community performers Ewalani Hula Maidens and Na Kane Hula, Studio 808 Danceproject and latin inspired dance-fitness party led by Zumba with Joanie. Special guest speakers included U.S. Attorney Florence Nakakuni, State Attorney General David Louie and Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle.
