what is backyard jam?
interactive resource fair
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser HiLife Backyard Jam culminates DrugFree Hawaii Awareness Month activities and events spearheaded by
the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii. For the past 25 years the
Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii, a nonprofit agency has been a leader
in providing “Prevention through Education” programs in the community. The 12th Annual Honolulu Star-Advertiser HiLife Backyard Jam is a
free-to-the public, family orientated event to raise community
awareness about substance abuse.
The resource fair provided 23 community
service agencies and organizations to
participate in Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness
Month. Each service agency and organization
highlighted their programs and offered
interactive activities for adults and keiki.
Participants received educational information on substance abuse and ongoing
community issues.
Families enjoying the festivities
exceptional support from volunteers
A large part of Backyard jam’s success is due to the
faithfulness and commitment of its volunteers.
Hawaii National Guard’s Counter Drug Support Unit
provided tents for the event. Youth support was
provided by the Explorers, Kapolei High School Social
Norms Project, TeenLink & Ewalution who staffed
activities including a photo booth, friendship bracelet
making, helping with entertainment hospitality tent
and passing out resources. Juvenile Drug Court
youth volunteers supervised bouncers, assisted the
resource booth, and helped with clean up.
The awesome event logo was created and designed
by HiLIfe and the event t-shirts were printed by
Butigroove. Radio stations as KRATER 96, KCCN FM
100, POWER 104.7 and Hawaiian 105 KINE ran event
PSA’s and provided our event DJ.
olo pono awards
As part of Backyard Jam the Ola Pono and Kendyl
Ko Hau Blossom Awards were presented to
those unsung heroes in our state who make a
meaningful contribution for the safety and well being for a drug-free community. This year’s
award recipients were Oceanic Time Warner
Cable and the Kapolei High School Social Norms
Media Project. Emceeing the award presentation
was Ms. Kim Gennaula, President of AUW. Award
presenters were Senator Mike Gabbard, House of
Representatives Sharon Har, Lt. Col. Tamah-Lani
Noh, Mrs. Kelcey Ko and Ms. Kendys Min.
