Peter Riedel, born in 1963, is an expert in the
field of winter sport technology. The German
has dedicated his career to construction planning, construction management and his work
as an engineer, although he has attracted the
most attention with his innovative concepts
in winter sport. He designed the feasibility
study for the cross-country ski tunnel in Oberhof, among other projects.
The following two books have emerged
thanks to Peter Riedel’s involvement: a picture book about ski jumps called ”Jump!“ and
the history of his family ”Spuren des Erfolgs“.

a échoué à quelques centimètres.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL JUMPS IN THE WORLD
sport
Victory and defeat in ski-jumping
meet in the symbol of the ski-jump –
the jump looks graciously on the winner standing jubilant on the runout;
it looks consolingly on the loser who
falls before the fall line. The ski-jump
is like the goddess Justitia: blind and
fair, it judges and punishes. The skijump knows neither who is jumping
nor who wins. The ski-jump does not
seek the athletes’ favour. In practice,
in fact, it is the opposite: Those who
do not befriend with the ski-jumping
facility will not experience its magic.

Sieg und Niederlage beim Skispringen
geschehen im Zeichen der Schanze
– sie blickt gnädig auf den Gewinner,
der jubelnd im Auslauf steht, und
tröstend auf den Verlierer, der vor
der Sturzlinie zu Fall gekommen ist.
Die Schanze ist wie Göttin Justitia,
blind, gerecht, richtend und strafend.
Es interessiert sie nicht, wer gerade
springt. Es interessiert sie nicht, wer
gewinnt. Sie muss nicht um die Gunst
der Athleten buhlen. Es ist nämlich
umgekehrt: Wer sich mit der Skisprunganlage nicht anfreunden kann,
wird keine Sternstunden erleben …
BUSINESS
Philosophy
Ski jumps are assembled
for all over the world at the
Peter Riedel GmbH factory
in Raschau in Erzgebirge,
Saxony.
His sense of action is both
banal and complex: Peter Riedel
works in ski jump construction
because he wants to make the
sport more attractive to
spectators and newcomers and
create good, constant conditions
for the athletes.
The skilled and competent workforce focuses on
the development and production of components for
inrun track systems for ski jumps. The Peter Riedel
GmbH relies on high-quality material and its inrun
track systems have become the world‘s No.1 solution on jumping hills in the last few years. Peter Riedel
GmbH laid its first inrun track on a World Cup ski
jump at the large jumping hill in Trondheim in 2007,
following numerous sports and technological development stages. This is only the first facility on which
you can jump on ice in the autumn on a year-afteryear basis.
The organisers of the New Year‘s jumping in Garmisch
Partenkirchen have also relied on the competence of
Peter Riedel GmbH since 2008.
To install a good, safe inrun tracks on a ski jump facility is very much a craft. To receive praise from the
scene – the coaches, officials and especially from the
athletes – makes the process emotional. Olympic and
World Champions such as Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT),
Eric Frenzel (GER), Jason Lamy Chappuis (FRA) or Bill
Demong (USA) are thrilled by the products and are very
communicative about this in public. This is the driving
force behind Peter Riedel on the search for even better
solutions for this high-performance sport.
Many other ski jump operators have since followed:
the expertise and commitment of Riedel is held very
highly in Russia and Japan. Thus, Riedel was not
only commissioned to participate in the building and
modernisation ski jumping facilities in Chaykovskij
in Nizhny Tagil, but also in Zao and Sapporo.
In Central Europe, he is meanwhile welcome as
an expert in Chaux-Neuve and Courchevel (FRA),
and Hinzenbach and Tschagguns (AUT). ”He
knows what is what“ is the appreciative, admiring tone, when people talk about Peter Riedel.
They also trust his expertise closest to home in
Oberwiesenthal,too.
Peter Riedel is a brand that is perceived: either
through his inrun tracks that can be found on two
continents, or through his friendly, professional attitude when giving a talk to the committees of the
International Ski Federation (FIS), when explaining
the possibilities and assistance that his company
and its products can offer to the jump operators,
when acting as sponsor of the International Children‘s Four Hills Tournament and other events,
and when just sitting with the big names of past
and present – such as Helmut Recknagel, Olympic
Champion in 1964, or with Thomas Morgenstern,
Olympic Champion in 2006.

MUCH MORE THAN INRUN TRACKS
The product portfolio at
Peter Riedel GmbH goes
far beyond inrun tracks.
The company sees itself as a systems provider
and, thus, also provides products and services
under the name Peter Riedel sports technology.
These include biometric jump force measurement technology for the entire inrun track portfolio, including analysis software and their optional
support; various products for ice preparation, including customization options for each ski jump
operator; and a range of mobile ski jumps called
”mobile track“, which are portable and can be
used in summer and winter, indoor and outdoor
ski jump. Peter Riedel sports technology - far
more than just inrun tracks.
Walter Hofer has been the Director
of Ski Jumping for the International
Ski Federation (FIS) since 1992 and
has observed and influenced the development of the sport for decades.
On Peter Riedel, Hofer says: ”Riedel
came to ski sports at a time when
improving the safety of the athletes
became an increasingly important
issue. And he stated he was willing
to help improve the inrun track at
jumping hills. Not everyone can do
this - because this requires understanding of construction and, as well
as incredible enthusiasm.“ Riedel
went to work immediately and with
great success.
That there are experts like Peter
Riedel working in ski jumping so
competently and innovatively, has
delighted Walter Hofer. ”In an environment such as ski jumping, it is
important that skilled enthusiasts
strive to provide quality technological solutions in certain areas of the
sporting discipline, even though this
is not a mass product“, says Hofer.
”The inrun tracks from Peter Riedel
are not for daily household use or at
just any site, or in an office. Despite
this, he keeps on innovating and
making progress.“
Hofer concludes: ”There is the
chance to transport ski jumping in
exotic regions, to inspire beginners,
to recruit athletes, to hold competitions in new locations using Riedel‘s
technologies. ... Looking ahead ....“
