Indiana Chapter Q–2 “Wings Over the Dunes” Visit our web site at gwrrainq2.org Visit us on Facebook at GWRRA Indiana Chapter Q2 March 2016 Volume 18, Issue 3 Robert (Bobby) Louis Newman 1951-2016 Bobby was a faithful member of the La Porte Assembly of God where he was very involved, serving as an usher, greeter and always willing to lend a hand. Bobby was and avid bowler and cyclist, completing several century rides before falling in love with motorcycles. He was very active in the GWRRA and served as the chapter director and assistant director. He was also a member of ABATE, AMA and served as task force leader for the northern Indiana ride for Kids. However it was all a cover to protect his real identity, Santa Clause. As Santa he made many appearances locally over the years. We met some awesome people from the Region and District. We went to as many seminars as we could. We learned a lot of things to help our Chapter grow. We had fun talking and learning from other chapters the way they do things. The welcoming we received was overwhelming. They gave us a feeling of unity with the District and Region. We talked to other chapters to get together with for rides and events. The only the sad news about fellow chapter member Bobby Newman who made a big impact on me the first time I met him. I'll cherish the bell for my Goldwing he gave me for the rest of my life. I want to thank all the chapter members who made it to Bobby's showing, for their support of the great man. I know the ones that were there knew him better than me, and for that you are truly blessed. We also had a great turnout for the Valentine's Dinner. It looked like we all had fun and ate too much. At least I know I did! Keep checking the Web Page and Facebook Page for updates of things going on in our Chapter, District, and Region. Soon we will be riding! It's going to be a great year! MARK & LUCY LAING CHAPTER DIRECTOR While at this years winter rendezvous I had the opportunity to get together with several other MEC’s and talk about the 2016 season and how we were going to keep the current members on their toes and bring on new members. One topic caught my ear, that we as an organization throughout Indiana should take the opportunity to meet up and coordinate rides with other chapters and visit our Region D counterparts. Join in on their rides, which many of them actually go very close to each others chapter’s territories. With those ideas in mind we put together goals that we thought were easy enough to attain.. Meet up with other chapters and coordinate rides together. Expand our rides to include more of Region D. Saugatuck Keep in close contact with other Ride 2013 chapters not just in our region but around the country. Our goal as MEC’s is always a challenge to keep it simple, fun, and safe. To incorporate new ideas and blend the past experiences in to create a twist that keeps everyone coming back for more. So buckle up your boots, zip up your jackets, put on your helmet, and lets go for a ride. Ride on. KP. 2 Rider Education Dave & Beth Korwek Tire Talk I was privy to a couple of conversations on tires this year and thought that now that the weather looks to be getting warmer, it would be a good time to visit this topic. The first conversation was on tire wear. Now, most of us have watched some form of racing, whether it is NASCAR, Indycar, Formula 1 or one of the many other types of racing, and have heard the announcers talk about adding or subtracting a pound of air to the tires to improve handling and/or grip. Tire pressures are directly related to temperature. Usually the lower the pressure the hotter a tire will get and the higher the pressure, the cooler it will run. Lowering the pressure in the tire will raise the temperature because the body of the tire flexes more, generating heat. This causes the rubber to get stickier, but leads to uneven tire wear and make the tire wear out sooner. Raising the pressure in the tire might make the tire wear a little better, but the tire runs cooler making it less sticky which can lead the bike to lose traction and possibly go down in a corner. At the least, it will cause the tire to wear out prematurely in the center. Every motorcycle manufacturer has a recommended tire pressure for each bike based on testing before the bike is put out for sale and can be found somewhere on the bike and the manual. Tire manufacture’s websites can also have useful information on the tire for your bike. If you wish to try out different pressures and how they affect your tires, do so by one to two pounds at a time and check your tires often to make sure you aren’t doing harm to them. The second conversation was about worn out tires. The old saying, “If you ride all the time check your tires at least once a week. If you ride once a week, check them every time.” Checking the tires isn’t only about checking the pressure. You should also be checking the tread and valve stem. Each tire has wear bars in the tread in several spots. These need to be looked at as well. If you aren’t sure what to look for, ask and someone will be able to point them out. Unfortunately, we live in an area that doesn’t allow us to wear the outside of the tire as much as the middle. Just because the outer part of the tread looks good, the middle can be worn out. The last problem is cupping. Cupping is when the area between the center of the tire and the outside part gets dished and feathered. This is a common problem on a heavy bike like the Goldwing. This is caused by braking, not acceleration or a pressure issue. When you apply your brakes, the weight transfers to the tire’s center and causes it to compress. The friction then wears the rubber in between the center and outside. Severe cupping can cause a bad vibration and could make you lose control of the bike if bad enough. Take care of your tires. They are all there is between you and the road. 3 Community page Chapter Colors Show you belong to a great organization…wear them! QR Codes, ever wonder what this funny looking thing was or why is was on something. Quick Reference codes are becoming more popular as cell phones become more like your home computer. Just like a bar code, we can make it reference anything we want, in this case the one below is currently set up to send the person who scans it to our Q2 web page, and to the new member section. As we begin sending out flyers and other information about the chapter, we’ll be including these QR codes in the information so all you have to do is scan it and your there. You will need to have the QR reader on your phone in order to retrieve the information. There are numerous FREE QR code reader scanners available for every type of phone and operating system. The particular one I use us QR Code Pro. Just go to your APP store and download one (select a FREE one) and scan this to go to the web page. Take a look at the recruiting flyer on the last page of the newsletter for the QR code. If you need assistance in acquiring the QR code reader, let me know, I’d be able to assist. Help us, help them. Greetings, Claudette and I are raising funds for the 12th annual Ride for Kids event out of South Bend. We've registered to participate in the Northern Indiana ride event to support the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Ride for Kids is a national motorcycle event that raises money for childhood brain tumor research. We are riding to help these kids and their families beat the odds. Help us reach our fundraising goal and support us as we join hundreds of other motorcyclists on a ride to cure the kids. You can donate online -- it's safe, secure and easy. God has put us on this path to help others. Please help us on this journey to help find the cause and cure of brain tumors in kids. Faithfully yours, Bobby & Claudette The Bobby (Robert) Newman 2016 Memorial ride for the kids. Let’s help Claudette keep Bobby’s legacy alive by participating in the 2016 ride for Kids. Bobby touched our lives and our hearts with his kindness and love for the kids.
