EDUCATION SERVICES TO LAUNCH A REVIEW OF THE
2012 POST SECONDARY EDUCATION PROGRAM
In 2012, Chief and Council approved a revised Program Policy. Through two surveys, students have identified a
number of issues. As well, administrators and parents have voiced concerns about the Policy and how it is administered.
On June 7, 2016, the Board of Education approved a policy review action plan to update the 2012 Program Policy
and how it is managed. Line Paré, Executive Advisor to the Director General, will lead the project in collaboration with Kateri Martin, Student Services Coordinator.
The purpose is not to look at the level of funding provided; it is to make sure that the policy is clear, comprehensive and administered effectively and transparently.
Through a number of activities, including consultations with Gesgapegiag post-secondary students, Line Paré
will propose changes to update the 2012 Gesgapegiag Post-Secondary Education Assistance Program Policy and
enhance the management of the program.
The following are areas of management that will be looked at:
o
roles and responsibilities;
o
application process;
o
decision making process;
o
financial management;
ocommunication;
o
student support services;
o
reporting; and,
o
record keeping.
It is expected that all the work will be completed and approved by the Board of Education by December 2016
with implementation starting in January 2017 for School Year 2017-2018.
We will update you on the review through Gesgapegiag Newsletter and Facebook. In the meantime, if you have
questions please do not hesitate to contact Line at Line.Pare@gesgapegiag.ca.

“Best of England”
On June 27th, five students and two monitors participated in an eight-day educational tour in England. On this
trip we had the pleasure of flying across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom to experience the "Best of England."
We had the chance to see the city of London, museums, London eye, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, Oxford
University, Shakespeare’s birthplace, Windsor Castle and the Roman baths. England's vast lands are exceptionally beautiful. The city of London itself displayed ancient structures combined with 21st century state of art. One
thing that really stood out to us all was the tremendous mix of cultures. We all are aware of England colonizing
most parts of the world. In doing so, the English brought those cultures back to their land and now with a population of 53 million people, all shades of colour, share those traditions amongst each other.
The educational tour taught us the wonders of England and its history. We got to witness a world that many may
not see in their lifetime and we are extremely grateful for the opportunity. We would like to thank Jimmy Martin,
because it is he who had this vision and initiated the project a couple years back. We would also like to thank
the parents, individuals and organizations that stepped up and contributed. Most importantly we would love to
thank the community of Gesgapegiag, because without you this trip doesn't happen.

ARE YOU A LEADER???
Have you ever thought about coaching in sport you are passionate about?
Do you want to learn about coaching?
Do you want to help develop young athletes?
Does your child’s team need a coach?
Do you want to coach at the community level?
What about coaching for competition?
Interested in being an assistant coach?
Gesgapegiag Health and Community Services is currently looking to host coaches training opportunities for our
community members. At this time we are looking for interested members who are already coaching, and
members who are interested in getting involved in coaching at any level and sport. G.H.C.S. will be working
with coach.ca and the National Coaching Certification Program to provide the best coaching training the
country has to offer. Before we select a date to hold these training courses we would like to have a good idea on
who is interested. These coaching courses are for the ages 16 and up. We would like to see between 10-12
participants but not limited to, before confirming a date and location.
Training programs like this are on-going and ever changing. When you take on the Coach’s role there are
responsibilities that must be carried out. Practice planning, staying up to date with new training methods,
nutrition, and more importantly, assisting and encouraging personal development for all athletes at all ages,
physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Being a coach is much more than telling your athletes what and
what not to do. It involves assisting individuals to improve themselves consistently and hope they will take these
lessons and use them in their own personal lives. Sport has countless benefits and teachings which can be used
in our day-to-day lives.
Here is an idea of some things we would like to offer to you:
•
Aboriginal Coaching Modules
•
Women in Coaching
•
Multi-sport Training
•
Community Sport Coach, and more…
If you have any questions or would like to register in person, you can reach Walter Jerome at G.H.C.S. at
418-759-3431. Deadline to register is July 31, 2016.
