transform the lives of local families, including veterans and those actively serving in
the armed forces. Your commitment has helped create stable, safe and affordable homes,
resulting in stronger families today and greater opportunities for future generations.

Working closely with families in Orange County, we have seen first-hand how lives are transformed.
Children are earning better grades in school; families are becoming financially self-sufficient because
of our Affordable Home Ownership Program. Homes are being refurbished and retrofitted for people
with disabilities, through our Hand-Up Home Repair Program. This program enables families to
remain in their homes and individuals to live independently despite fixed incomes or physical
limitations. Economically distressed neighborhoods are being tangibly renewed and
entire communities are coming together to make their neighborhoods safer through
our Neighborhood Revitalization Program.
We also serve families in other parts of the world through the Habitat for Humanity
Global Village Program by building alongside families who never imagined the
joy of having a dwelling with a concrete floor, four solid walls and a roof.
You are the catalyst for achieving our vision of creating a world where everyone has
a decent place to live. It is through your support and passion that we are able to build
a better future for families and veterans in Orange County and around the world.

Building hope and brighter futures for limited-income hardworking families in Orange County
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County (Habitat OC) addresses the housing need of limited-income
families through three programs:

What Habitat OC Accomplished in 2013-2014
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County continues to serve limited-income hardworking families
and veterans in Orange County:
Affordable Home Ownership
Building Globally
Habitat OC has now completed 5 of 17 homes slated for Santa Ana
neighborhoods, serving a range of limited to moderate-income
families. Construction also began in La Habra with 7 more homes
and we are building a 15-home development in Cypress. In addition,
we continue to serve the veteran community with affordable home
opportunities and veteran home repair.
For the third year, we collaborated with Habitat for Humanity
Nicaragua by leading two teams from Orange County to build
homes. Future builds include returning to Nicaragua and
expanding our global experience by traveling to Macedonia.
Hand-up Home Repair
Habitat OC continues to repair and renovate homes for limitedincome homeowners including veterans with financial and/or
physical limitations. Thanks to the sponsorship of The Home Depot
Foundation and Thrivent Financial, we served 24 veteran families
in this year alone. Additional Hand-up Home Repairs for limitedincome homeowners were completed in the City of Fullerton.
Neighborhood Revitalization
In partnership with Fullerton residents, the Fullerton Collaborative,
City of Fullerton and local businesses, we completed 9 program/
events in the Woodcrest neighborhood, including developing a
community-wide emergency preparedness center at the local
elementary school.
Habitat ReStore –
The Home Improvement Store that Builds Homes
The new Anaheim ReStore was launched, replacing the Garden Grove
location. Approximately 2,200 people attended the grand opening
and the store achieved record revenues that day. Habitat ReStores
exemplify renewal and reuse by offering new and gently used home
goods and building materials at discounted prices, a free electronic
recycling program, community events and Do-it-Yourself workshops.
Successful Events
The sold-out sixth annual Leaders Build Day brought together
Orange County business leaders to spend a day building at the
Cypress home development construction site and raised $73,000.
The annual Building Dreams fundraising breakfast raised nearly
$350,000 in one hour and the 14th annual TCA Charity Golf
Tournament was another sold-out event.

Affordable Home Ownership Program
Habitat OC’s Affordable
Home Ownership Program
serves families in Orange
County and is making
a difference in families
like Bryan and Sara’s.
Giving a hand-up, not a hand-out
to families in Orange County
Habitat OC helps give a hand-up to hardworking limited-income families
in Orange County. Homes are built from the ground up with volunteers
and “sweat equity” from the families who purchase the homes. Families who
qualify to purchase a home through Habitat OC are hardworking people
who struggle to make ends meet.
When a family is selected for a home in Habitat OC’s Affordable Home
Ownership Program, they work in partnership with Habitat OC by:
Committing 500 sweat equity hours in building their own home
Paying a small down payment plus closing costs
Assuming a long-term no-profit affordable mortgage
Attending classes to guide them into successful homeownership

“We wanted to give our children a place they can call home.”
Bryan, a veteran, and his wife, Sara, are an example of successful Habitat OC
homeowners. They were living in a 50+ year-old mobile home that was falling
apart. This situation was both unhealthy and unsafe. Habitat OC gave Bryan
and his family the opportunity to realize their dream of homeownership in
a vibrant and healthy neighborhood. After four years in a Habitat OC home,
Bryan shared the impact of owning a home, “The kids are getting straight A’s,
hiking and enjoying the beach. They know everyone in the neighborhood,
so Sara and I feel safe letting them play outside. Most importantly, there is
a sense of community and a pride of homeownership we never experienced
in our mobile home.”

Claudia and Pablo couldn’t afford a home
without a hand-up from Habitat OC
Before Claudia and Pablo purchased their
Habitat OC home, the couple, along with
their two children lived in a one-bedroom,
substandard apartment, where the children
suffered several bouts of pneumonia caused
by mold and mildew.
Mom and Dad were determined to find
better shelter and had been carefully saving
for a down payment, but could not find a
home they could afford. Then, they found
the Habitat for Humanity of Orange County
Affordable Home Ownership Program.
Their new three-bedroom home was built
with a lot of love and hard work.
“I love my room!” says Brianna, age 8.
Today, Brianna’s room is filled with stuffed
animals. Brianna and her brother, Pablo Jr.,
are healthy as a result of living in a safe,
healthy home.

Hand-up Home Repair Program
While new home construction continues to play a vital role, another program in our toolbox includes repairs and renovations and
other services that allows Habitat OC to serve more families. Through its Hand-up Home Repair Program, Habitat OC renovates
homes for limited-income homeowners, including veterans, with financial and/or physical limitations who are unable to keep up
with repairs of their own homes. In the United States, 1.4 million veterans are at risk of homelessness due to unemployment or
underemployment, poverty, lack of financial and community support, and poor living conditions.
Veterans Benefit from Habitat OC’s Hand-Up Home Repair Program
Rolando is a nuclear engineer who served as a
lieutenant in the United States Navy for five years.
He and his wife, Bernice, purchased a 50-year-old
home, where they lived with their two young
children and Bernice’s grandmother. After moving
in, they began extensive repairs to make the house
safe for the family.
However, due to various life-changing events
involving job losses and serious health issues,
they were prematurely forced to end the work
they had planned to complete on their home.
While their family’s safety was their top priority,
the work was too much for this family to take
on alone.

much-needed repairs, as well as, landscaping,
installing fencing and exterior painting.

Serving Those Who Served
A hand-up home repair for a veteran comes full circle
Army and Navy Vietnam veteran Michael and his wife Pat, also a Navy veteran,
know all about giving. With over 20 years of combined service, they are used to
doing more for others than for themselves. They raised their children and their
grandchildren in their Fullerton home and when they discovered their home
had become almost impossible to maintain, they didn’t know where to turn.
Michael and Pat learned about Habitat OC’s Hand-up Home Repair Program,
which also serves veterans, through their American Legion post. This program is
dedicated to providing veterans with safe and decent living conditions. Michael
and Pat’s home was in need of interior and exterior repairs, so they decided to
take a leap of faith and apply for the program. Soon after, Habitat OC and Home
Depot volunteers showed up at their home to help with the much-needed repairs.
While volunteers were working on the repairs, Michael and Pat stood watching
in amazement. “For me this is kind of the end of a journey,” Michael said. “To see
the turnaround in this country in how we’re treating our veterans, for this to
finally come in my life, it kind of ties a knot.”

Neighborhood Revitalization Program
When combined with its Affordable Home Ownership Program, Habitat OC’s Neighborhood Revitalization Program creates
a community-wide ‘multiplier effect’ that has a greater impact on neighborhoods than what could be accomplished separately.
When Habitat OC constructed 11 affordable homes in Fullerton,
we also committed to creating a strong community multiplier effect
across entire nearby neighborhoods. The adjacent Woodcrest community
has been in transition, experiencing a diminished sense of community
and neighborhood cohesion caused by the shifting ratio of homeowners
to renters, lack of home upkeep, fewer areas safe for play and increased
drug activity. Families have expressed a strong desire to improve their
neighborhood, but lacked the organizational skills and resources to
make real and permanent improvements.

Habitat OC and NeighborWorks OC share a vision that in order
to accomplish Neighborhood Revitalization, the focus must be on
empowering residents through leadership training and intensive
long-term support/resources. Both organizations team up to train
resident leaders and support them in selecting, prioritizing and
implementing solutions to the challenges they have identified in their
own community. This community-building approach differs greatly
from employing a “top-down” approach where outside organizations
impose changes on a community.
Improving Neighborhoods
by Empowering Residents
Building on the support of their elementary school
principal, residents of the Woodcrest community in
Fullerton created alliances with the City of Fullerton
including the police, fire and community services
departments, and the Fullerton Collaborative – a vibrant
organization comprised of non-profit executive directors,
educators, community service leaders and volunteers.
Residents started their work by engaging neighborhood
families through community and graffiti-cleanup projects,
Neighborhood Watch, and creation of a community garden.
This year the residents have undertaken more complex
projects such as community-wide Emergency Preparedness.
They have established an Emergency Center at the
elementary school by bringing together various city
departments, plus local organizations including American
Red Cross, St. Jude Medical Center, The Home Depot,
and local elected officials to achieve their goal.
Through Habitat OC’s Neighborhood Revitalization
Program, the residents are now empowered to tackle
more challenging issues such as poor maintenance
of homes, traffic/pedestrian safety issues, lack of safe
recreational/play areas, and reducing drug activity.
Residents now also have the skills needed to create
sustainable solutions in their neighborhood.

Team Build Days
Thank you to the corporations who swapped their smartphones for hammers and
volunteered at a home build site or home repair for a Habitat OC Team Build Day.
This past year, 90 team builds were sponsored by Orange County businesses and
corporations. Corporate Team Build Days offer employees the opportunity to give
back to their community.

Build Days are an excellent way to create team spirit. Contact

Leaders Build Day
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County’s Leaders Build Day is an annual event where top
executives and business leaders work together to build affordable homes for limited-income
families. On April 3, 2014, almost 60 Orange County-based business leaders left their suits
and phones behind to spend a day on a Habitat OC construction site where they helped

The Dunn Family
Creating a Tradition of Giving Back for Generations to Come
Joe and Ellie Dunn encourage each of their six children and 15 grandchildren to practice financial
responsibility while giving back to their community.
I
n 2000, Joe and Ellie set up Napa Holdings LLC,
a fund to support their grandchildren’s college
and other vocational education. The grandchildren call
Ellie “Nano” and Joe “Papa,” hence the name “Napa”
was born.
With most of their grandchildren either recently graduated
from college or currently enrolled in college, the couple
initiated a new tradition. They decided to use Napa LLC as
a vehicle to teach their grandchildren about the importance
of philanthropy.
In 2014, Joe and Ellie asked each of their grandchildren
to choose a non-profit organization to support via
Napa LLC. The couple agreed to match, dollar for dollar,
each contribution made through the fund. Two of the
grandchildren, Claire and Sam, chose Habitat for
Humanity – one of six non-profits chosen for support.
Claire and Sam loved the idea of seeing improvements
in their community, and because they had previous
hands-on experience with a local team build, they knew
Habitat would be their choice.
The Dunn family has been supporting Habitat for
Humanity of Orange County for more than 20 years.

The Dunn Family offers a remarkable example of instilling a
tradition of giving back that will pay dividends in the Orange

The Habitat ReStores in Anaheim and Santa Ana are non-profit home
improvement stores and donation centers that sell quality new and gently
used furniture, appliances, home décor and building materials to the public
at discounted prices. Proceeds help fund the building of affordable Habitat
for Humanity of Orange County homes.
What We Accomplished in 2013-2014:
