Linda and I were married on 10 February 1963 in Jacksonville, North Carolina. We were both enlisted members in the United States Marine Corps. Each night I shined our shoes while Linda ironed uniforms for the next duty day. We were a couple of sharp Marines, Linda worked in the 2nd Marine Division Communication Center and I was in the 10th Marine, Field Artillery Regiment. Our USMC enlistments ended in 1962 and we moved to Connecticut where our first child was born in 1963. My father and I operated an ESSO Gas Station for about eighteen months. I decided pumping gas and washing windshields was not my career field so I enlisted in the Army in early 1964. During the following seventeen years we moved from one military assignment to another, including Field Artillery Officer Candidate School, a yearlong tour in South Vietnam Nam with the 1/8th FA Bn., 25th Infantry Division Artillery two unaccompanied tours in 1/17th FA Bn, 2nd Inf. Division, South Korea and assignments In the 321st FA Bn, 101st Airborne Division, Ft. Campbell Kentucky and the 3/3rd FA Bn, 194th Brigade, Ft. Knox, Kentucky. We were also stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC for several years training SC National Guard and Reserve soldiers. This assignment required me to work most weekends. The thing that Linda loved most about Oakstead was sitting on our back porch watching the wildlife that was so plentiful in the Cypress Swamp directly behind it. She simply loved animals. Her little dog Brandi was the light of her life for the eleven years. On the evening of 6 August Linda went to bed and at some point during the night she was placed in our Lord’s arms. She was buried in The Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell with full military honors. We all loved Linda unconditionally and miss her every day. I will always cherish the 52 years we spent together, we were truly soul mates. As I said 2014 has profoundly changed my life and as 2015 starts I would encourage everyone to take time to recognize the things you love and how fragile life really is. Hug your loved ones and tell them you love them. Attempt to enjoy every day with positive happy feelings because anything else is a pure waste of time that will not be recognized until it is too late. May 2015 bring everyone the best of everything. Through all of the unaccompanied tours, schools, and normal eighteen hour workdays Linda handled the job of raising three children, mostly alone-without complaint, in a superb manner. She motivated me to attend college by constantly telling me that I was smart enough, at thirty five, to keep up with the younger students. I would procrastinate at completing the paperwork and she would chew me out until I turned it in. I graduated from Cameron University in 1973. All of the credit goes to Linda. After retiring from the military in 1981 Linda insisted that I use my GI Bill benefits to earn a Master’s Degree. I graduated with a Master’s Degree from USF in 1987. All of the credit goes to Linda. She used to say “that is what a wife is supposed to do”. I encouraged her to achieve her lifelong goal of being a nurse. She graduated from nursing school as the top student in the class in 1983. I have never seen anyone study as hard as Linda did in nursing school. When our children completed their college degree programs Linda and I were very proud of them. Linda instilled the work and study ethics in our kids while I was somewhere else in the world soldiering. She truly supported me in every way possible. She injured her back lifting a patient and had to stop nursing. From that day in 1989 she was in constant pain from. She bravely handled the pain as she tried to live a normal life. Andrew P. Mendenhall, PMP District Manager Article written by Chris Ayoub, HOA President I trust all members of our Oakstead community had a very enjoyable and relaxing Holiday season and that the New Year brings all of us much happiness, health, success and great memories. Your HOA Board, in partnership with the Design Review Board (DRB), Covenant Enforcement Committee (CEC), and our property manager, Associa Gulf Coast, had a very busy and productive 2014. Naturally, through prudent use of our resources, much of our efforts are focused upon ensuring and enhancing the livability, safety, quality and value of our neighborhoods. The overall financial condition of your HOA remains sound and well positioned, a situation that allowed the Board to keep the annual HOA fee unchanged at $55. The 2015 operating budget, approved at the November meeting, will provide ample funding to continue important initiatives. During the final quarter of 2014, each homeowner received via mail, a notice of Annual Meeting along with HOA board candidate bios, proxy information and voting forms. It is important that each homeowner review this material and decides on an appropriate course of response. Without a quorum established, your HOA cannot conduct an annual meeting. This year, less than 10% of homeowners either voted their proxies or attended the meeting, which is well below the needed amount. As a result, no meeting was held and 2014 Board Members were retained. Your 2015 Board Members are as follows Chris Ayoub- President Jay Carter- Vice President Alan Stern- Treasurer Geri Cochran- Secretary Gary Goldstein- Member During 2014, Jay Carter assumed the Interim President position when Gary Goldstein found it necessary to step back from his role as President. Combined with his responsibility as Chair of the DRB, Jay’s service to the Oakstead community has been invaluable and his commitment impressive. With regard to Gary, he too Oakstead Times H JANUARY 2015 must be commended and thanked for the many years he has served as HOA President and Board Member. As fortune has it, Gary was willing to continue in his role as Board Member. As you have likely read in past Oakstead newsletters, the HOA has focused significant attention on making sure that homeowners are following and adhering to the rules and guidelines contained within the covenants handbook. When you made the decision to purchase a property in Oakstead, you did so with the knowledge that this is a deed-restricted community that is governed by an established set of rules and regulations. There is a direct correlation between property condition and property values so compliance with the covenants clearly benefits us all in the end. If you receive a letter from the HOA via Associa, please communicate with our property manager on a course of corrective action. If you disagree with the violation or have any issue, please reach out to Associa or plan to attend a monthly HOA meeting to address your concern directly to the Board. The CEC is meeting on a regular basis and is assessing fines to those homeowners unwilling to live by the rules. In the end, the most cost effective and optimal manner to resolve problems is to be proactive in the care of your property. If you are a tenant in an investor owned property, I would encourage you to immediately notify the owner of a developing problem so they can resolve the issue on a timely basis. Typical of past authors of this letter, I too would greatly encourage you to become more involved with the HOA. We meet monthly, most always on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the meeting room at the clubhouse. The HOA is always looking for members to serve on one of the committees. I want to thank the handful of neighbors who do make a point to be involved and attend meetings. Your thoughts, comments and ideas are very much appreciated. Page 5 DRB (Design Review Board) NOVEMBER HAPPENINGS By: Jay Carter, Oakstead Resident and DRB Committee Member November was a busy month with 27 applications. YTD there have been 197 vs. 119 for 2013. MOST applications are completed within a few days so time is no excuse! The covenants and some routine applications are on the Oakstead CDD website www.oaksteadcdd.org/hoa, Nextdoor, or at the clubhouse. Most EXTERIOR CHANGES need approval. Refer to your covenants and DRB supplement for further details! Some changes may require a Pasco County permit. Failure to submit an application will result in getting a covenant violation and if not addressed, possible fines and legal ac- tion. Please look around your house and yard and see if there is anything that might need attention; MAINTENANCE items such as trees trimmed, driveway/sidewalk washed, touch-up painting, mailbox spiffed up, etc. do not need approval. What requires DRB Approval? • EXTERIOR PAINTING • PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT • FENCING • TREE REMOVAL / REPLACEMENT • LANDSCAPING • ARCHITECTUAL REVISIONS/ ADDITIONS ADDRESS 3128 Ashmonte 3216 Ashmonte 3327 Ashmonte 3215 Ashmonte 3412 Russett 3820 Ivydale 19647 Bergenfeld 3304 Brenford 3921 Judson Dr 3704 Lockridge 3921 Judson Dr 19503 Ardwick 3828 Briley 19614 Bellehurst 19610 Bellehurst 19739 Bellehurst 4508 Havelocke 4520 Beaumaris 4615 Marchmont 4208 Marchmont 4212 Marchmont 4311 Marchmont 3015 Sheehan 3042 Sheehan 3050 Sheehan 3317 Sheehan 19840 Strathmore January 1st closed January 2nd open at 9am DRB REQUESTS - NOVEMBER 2014 VILLAGE Ashmonte Ashmonte Ashmonte Ashmonte Ashmonte Ballastone Brenford Brenford Hillington Hillington Hillington Hillington Hillington Keswick Keswick Keswick Marchmont Marchmont Marchmont Marchmont Marchmont Marchmont Strathmore Strathmore Strathmore Strathmore Strathmore Holiday Clubhouse Hours ACTIVITYDATEVOTE Exterior Painting 4-Nov A Tree Removal resubmit AC Screen Enclosure resubmit A Exterior Painting 7-Nov A Pavers 18-Nov AC Exterior Painting 14-Nov A Tree Removal 4-Nov A Exterior Painting 7-Nov A Tree Removal 5-Nov A Exterior Painting 12-Nov A Exterior Painting 20-Nov A Exterior Painting 20-Nov A Driveway Pavers 26-Nov A Fencing 7-Nov A Exterior Painting 13-Nov A Replace sod 26-Nov A Exterior Painting, 3-Nov A Driveway Pavers 4-Nov A Landscape 11-Nov A Tree Removal 20-Nov NA Tree Removal 20-Nov NA Exterior Painting 24-Nov A Exterior Painting 1-Nov A 2 Tree Removal 7-Nov AC Tree Removal 7-Nov AC Tree Removal 18-Nov A Satellite dish 20-Nov X COMMENT Pasco permit JOIN ‘NEXTDOOR’ WEB SITE Join today for free! NEW CHALLENGES I find it hard to sit down and write articles for January’s newsletter in November because most of what I would like to write about I have not gotten the answers to the questions that I sent out to the county, engineer, landscaper, code enforcement, roofer and management company. Questions I have for residents are: Did you enjoy the holidays? What are your New Year’s resolutions going to be? Did you read the ARC covenants before you put in your ARC application? Did you put in your ARC application before doing your work? Did you clean your dryer vent pipe that goes through the roof? Lint builds up not only in the bottom of the dryer but in the vent pipe and can go on fire if not cleaned once a year. It also cuts down the efficiency of the dryer and costs more to dry your clothes! All I can do is hope that we don’t have too many surprises within the village this year but we will face them whatever they will be. Happy Tenth ANNIVERSARY! It is hard to imagine that in May Tan- NEWS Fred Krauer, Oakstead Resident and President of Tanglewylde HOA Board glewylde HOA is going to be ten years old! All I can say is that it has been very trying at times from lightning strikes to one villa burning up, blocking power lines from being run through Tanglewylde and Oakstead, tree removals and being over $100,000.00 in non-payment of fees to just a few hundred dollars. This is also the time to thank the residents who have been on our different committees and helping to create the ARC guidelines that our village operates under. Even though it was a thankless job of going from door to door to get proxies signed and getting yelled at to leave them alone and then you have others who would rather be part of the problem and not part of the solution (NO FUN DOING THAT JOB) but the volunteers charged on to get the needed proxies. For the residents who decorated the entrance and exit gates for the holidays it always looks nice and puts a smile on your face when driving up to Tanglewylde day or night. It gives you the feeling like this is my home and I am happy to live here. Thank you for taking pride in the Oakstead Community but most of all for making Tanglewylde a special place to live. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. n£ÎxÇÇn{Ó Ƥ̷ ů New Year’s Resolution Two New Year’s Resolutions Tanglewylde and Oakstead Residents can do to keep the community and Villages looking great. You could burn up twice as many calories doing some bending and stretching while you walk. Picking up after your dog also keeps Oakstead looking great! Thank- You Tanglewylde I would like to thank the residents who voted in the Tanglewylde HOA election. It was the first time since our first meeting ten years ago that we had a quorum of the membership who voted. We will continue to work hard to stay within our budget and fund our reserves but most of all to find ways not to do any special assessments. Thanks for the vote of confidence in Tanglewylde HOA. GOOD JOB!! YTD, we have done almost 100,000 pounds! We did about 93,500 pounds in all 2013 so ahead of that pace! The bins are emptied every Friday and Monday on Green Fiber’s normal route. Every effort is made to make space available for deposits but a “wild card” is if someone has moved in and deposits a lot of empty boxes. It is paramount that boxes be flattened! There are two green collection bins in the clubhouse parking lot by the tennis courts. If you turn onto Tuckerman (side street next to the clubhouse) and then turn into the parking lot, the bins will be to your left. Acceptable items are newspaper, cardboard (PLEASE FLATTEN!), office paper, magazines, phone books, junk mail, office and construction paper. These paper items CANNOT be included in the bi-weekly curbside pick-up. Please do not put curbside recycle materials into the paper bins! 1. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE THE COVERS TO KEEP RAIN OUT. Rain causes weights to be overstated, the material unusable, and ineligible for payment. 2. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING ON THE GROUND - IF BINS ARE FULL, USE THE BIN AT SUNLAKE OR OAKSTEAD SCHOOL OR PREFERRABLY HOLD MATERIAL UNTIL BINS HAVE SPACE! 3. PLEASE ENCLOSE ANY SHREDDED PAPER IT IN A BAG VS. PUTTING INTO THE BIN LOOSE AS IT CAN BLOW AWAY WHEN BIN IS EMPTIED. 4. Please make sure empty cardboard boxes are FLATTENED as whole boxes take up valuable volume in the small bins!! If a box is full of newspaper or paper, that is fine! The CDD encourages all Oakstead residents to be green and recycle both with this and the curbside pick-up programs! THINK GLOBALLY AND ACT LOCALLY! The developer made a poor selection of this tree to plant in the narrow strip between the sidewalks and roadways. They were cheap, take little maintenance, and grow rapidly. Regrettably as they have matured there have been numerous instances of sidewalk and driveway damage caused by the extensive root system these trees have. As all the utilities to our homes are underground, it is possible the root systems could also damage water, sprinkler, sewer, electric, or cable lines – costly repairs!! Another negative of these trees is the leaves - they fall non-stop and blow everywhere! I have yet to see a landscape contractor rake or vacuum them up; they usually BLOW them into the resident’s yard OR a neighbor’s yard. The leaves take a long time to mulch and are a poor nutrient source for the grass. There is a growing problem of heavy accumulations of leaves on sidewalks and streets – these need to be removed by the owner of the tree!! One other issue these trees are presenting is the huge limb canopy which hangs over the roadway in many villages. Large trucks are hitting the branches and the Pasco County fire department has complained the limbs are damaging the VERY expensive paint jobs on their fire trucks. The trees between the sidewalk and roadways are the responsibility of the homeowner. There have been numerous DRB applications to remove and replace them. If a tree is greater than 10” diameter at chest height (or 31” circumference) removing it also requires a Pasco County permit – cost is $50. Over time these tress can grow to 70-80 feet tall and 30-36” diameter. Obviously the bigger they are, the more expensive they will be to remove. The March 2013 issue of this magazine (can be accessed on the Oakstead CDD website) has an article regarding installing a root barrier which might buy time in lieu of removing the tree. Does a tree have to be replaced? Pasco County has requirements for residential lots. Per their website, a lot < 3500 ft2 must have 1 tree somewhere on the lot. 3500-6000ft2 - 2 trees, 6001-7500 ft2 - 3 trees, 7501-9500 ft2 – 4 trees, 9501-16000 ft2 – 6 trees. Here is a list and some photos of approved replacement trees from the Pasco County list. A homeowner can choose from the following tree species: Ash, Bay, Black Haw, Cabbage Palm, Cypress, Dogwood, Elm, Fringe Tree, Hawthorn, Hickory, Holly, Hophornbeam, Hornbeam, Loblolly Bay, Magnolia, Mangrove, Maple, Oak , Pine, Plum, Redbud, Red Cedar, River Birch, Sourwood, Sugarberry, Hackberry, Sweet Bay, Sweet Gum, Sweet Osmanthus, Sycamore, Tulip Tree, Walter Virburnum, and Wax Myrtle. Youth also use electronics recreationally through activities such as downloading music and playing video games (the latter being popular among children of all ages—especially boys). Although children today are more media literate than their parents, this increased electronic-media consumption may not always be positive. For example, not all video games are appropriate for youth, and some may contain violence, obscene language, and/or sexual content. You can take an active role in youth-video-game consumption with the following suggestions: Learn more about a game’s content by checking its Entertainment Software Rat- ing Board (ESRB) rating. • Test games before allowing your child to play them to ensure the games are appropriate. • Play games with your child to experience the games firsthand, witness children’s reactions, and stay informed about the latest changes and trends in popular games. • Set limits and rules regarding playing time and content that apply in and outside of the home. • If your child plays games online, be sure to warn them about forming relationships with strangers on the Internet. • Encourage your child to participate in other activities such as sports and outdoor hobbies. Some video games can be educational and age-appropriate, but many have content not suitable for youth. By being informed about different types of video games, you can guide your children to make better decisions. Shedding Light on Veggies Yvonne Swanson, Times Correspondent Garden must-haves Do you have the right tools to get the job done? According to the National Gardening Association, every gardener should have a spade or shovel, a long-handled cultivator, a rake and hand tools such as pruners, trowel and cultivator. Depending on the job, you may need hedge shears, loppers, a saw and wheelbarrow or garden cart to move heavy objects or soil. Quality tools aren’t cheap, so compare prices at local retailers, catalogs and Internet suppliers. Yard sales and classified ads are good sources as well. xnƂȡʔɭȄ Even if your yard is sunlightchallenged, you can still grow vegetables. Some vegetables need as little as three hours of sun each day or even all-day dappled shade, organic gardening expert Colleen Vanderlinden says. That includes salad greens, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, beets, Brussels sprouts, radishes, Swiss chard, leafy greens and beans. Plants that produce fruit (like tomatoes) or edible roots (carrots) need full sun. If your yard is deep shade, you’re out of luck. Stick with store-bought produce or join a community garden or co-op for your veggie fix. reprinted with permission of the Tampa Bay Times It is against the Pasco County Law to park on the grass or sidewalk! While there hasn’t been a formal announcement, this is the first major retailer linked to the site, which is located at Interstate 75 - State Road 56 interchange. Outlet mall developer Simon Properties is currently building a 1.1-millionsquare-foot Premium Outlet mall and plans to open in October 2015. Simon officials had previously announced that luxury retailer Saks Inc. would anchor the mall with a Saks “Off 5th” store, but they have been tight-lipped about other tenants since closing on the property two months ago. Simon spokesman Les Morris said an announcement regarding the outlet mall could come as early as next week. Company officials have scheduled a pre-application meeting with county planners for Dec. 16. A representative of the Richard E. Jacobs Group will also be present at the meeting. The 153,041-square-foot Costco store is slated for 18 acres on the south side of S.R. 56, leaving the Jacobs Group, with 32 acres that are zoned for restaurants, retail stores and a movie theater. Costco Wholesale Corp., based near Seattle, operates an international chain of membership warehouses. The chain credits itself with carrying name brand merchandise at prices lower than traditional wholesale or retail stores. Costco has about 460 locations nationwide, including two in the Tampa area, in Brandon and Clearwater, and a proposed store near the Westchase community in northwest Hillsborough. Company officials could not be reached for comment. Tampa-based Sierra Properties, still owns the 40-acre parcel closest to the interstate, which is approved for up to two hotels. Sierra Properties also owns 204 acres on the north side of S.R. 56 and is in lease negotiations with several restaurants, a sporting goods retailer and a department store. Oakstead Times H JANUARY 2015 Oakstead Tree Removal Guideline Revision Pasco County has become alarmed at the large quantity of trees being removed and in response has tightened up their scrutiny and enforcement of tree removals. Also the cost of the Pasco permit has risen from $30 to $50 plus another $30 if they send an inspector to take a look. In light of this, the Oakstead DRB and HOA has revised its’ tree removal procedures and the tree removal application It is strongly encouraged to REPLACE any tree that is removed even if your lot meets the Pasco County required number of trees for your lot size. The newsletter and clubhouse has a list of Pasco County approved trees. If replacing a STREET tree in the narrow strip between the sidewalk and street, give consideration to how big the tree and root system will get so as to not damage the sidewalk or other infrastructure in the future. Removal of trees in the main yard will not be approved just because they are dropping leaves or such. DRB / HOA procedures for tree removal: If a tree of ANY species is > 3” diameter at chest height, DRB approval is required. If a tree is > 10” diameter at chest height, the DRB will do a PRE-APPROVAL if the tree is dead, diseased, or causing a problem to infrastructure such as house foundation, street, or sidewalk. This includes relocating the tree or removing it and replacing it with a different species. The owner must THEN obtain the Pasco County permit and send a copy of it to Associa then FINAL DRB approval will be issued. The only exception to the Pasco rule is a Pasco permit is NOT required for longleaf pine trees. Failure to get DRB approval BEFORE removing a tree will result in a violation and possible fine. SUBMIITING a tree removal application does not mean you can remove a tree – the application must be APPROVED. Pasco County may also issue a fine for unapproved tree removal. Special consideration will be given to trees between the sidewalk and street (STREET tree) or on the yard side close to the sidewalk. It is important to remember that STREET trees and sidewalks on a lot are owned by the lot owner. Damage caused by the tree or tree roots to the sidewalk or other infrastructure is the lot owner’s responsibility. Pasco County requirements for number of tress on various size residential lots are: < 3500 sq. ft - 1 tree. 3500-6000 sq. ft. – 2 trees. 6001-7500 sq. ft – 3 trees. 7501-9500 sq. ft– 4 trees. 9501-16000 sq. ft – 6 trees. Oakstead Times H JANUARY 2015 Page 20 Traditions and History of Celebrating the New Year New Year’s Day is the first day of the calendar year in this country. It is celebrated as a holiday in almost every country in the world but at different times of the year. It is a time of gaiety, sharing with friends, remembering the past, and hoping for good things in the future. In the United States, thousands of people jam Times Square in New York City to welcome the New Year at midnight. The transition be- tween New Year's Eve and New Year Day is an exciting one. In Times Square, people count down the seconds to welcome the new day as the New Year ball slowly descends and lights up the area. Not all countries or cultures celebrate New Year on January 1st. The Chinese, Egyptian, Jewish, Roman, and Mohammedan years all have different start dates. Chinese New Year starts on a different day each year. Thousands of years ago, the Egyptians celebrated their New Year about the middle of June. That was the time when the Nile River usually overflowed. January 1was recognized as New Year Day in the 1500's with the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar. The Julian Calendar places the New Year on January 14. The Jewish New Year, a feast day, is celebrated about the time of the fall equinox, in late September. In ancient Rome, the first day of the New Year honored Janus, the god of gates, doors, beginnings and endings - the month of January, named after Janus, was originally called 'Januarius'. Janus had two faces - one which looked ahead to see what the new year would bring, and the other looked backward to see what happened during the past year. Ancient Romans celebrated New Year by giving gifts to friends and family members - some even gave gifts to Senators in exchange for favors! In England, Druid priests celebrated their New Year on March 10. They gave branches of mistletoe to people for charms. Later, English people followed the custom of cleaning their chimneys on New Year Day. The English believed this brought good luck to the household for the coming year. The expression "cleaning the slate" came from this custom. It means making resolutions to correct faults and bad habits. People resolve to make themselves better in the New Year. It is still customary even today to make a list of New Year resolutions for the coming year. If already installed, test them! Tip: Replace the batteries every daylight-saving time change. • Avoid Overload: Check for overloaded extension cords – usage should not exceed the recommended wattage. • Don’t Get Tippy: If young children are in the home, bookshelves and other furniture should be firmly secured with wall brackets to prevent tipping. • Paint Safe: Check walls for loose paint. If re-painting, do so in a well-ventilated area and consider VOC-free paint. • Childproof, Childproof, Childproof: Check your local library or online for complete lists of childproofing suggestions and see our Virtual Home Safety Tour for more ideas. Areas of particular danger include outlets, appliances, electronics, stairs and windows. • Cover Outlets: Cover all unused outlets to prevent children from sticking a finger in the socket. • Watch Cord Placement: Extension cords should not be placed under rugs or heavy furniture, tacked up or coiled while in use. • Get Grounded: All major appliances should be grounded. Be sure to check your ground fault circuit interrupters regularly. • Plan Your Escape: Practice a fire escape plan with your family where you identify two exits for every room and what to do with young children. • Give Your Air Heater Some Space: All air heaters should be placed at least three feet from beds, curtains or anything flammable. • Keep Extinguishers Handy: Place all-purpose fire extinguishers in key locations in your home – the kitchen, bedroom and basement. Be sure to check expiration dates regularly and know how to use them safely. • Create a Safe Exit: In addition to alarms and extinguishers, consider an escape ladder if your home has two floors. Make sure to look for it to keep your holidays safe and bright. Page 21 Gasparilla – January 31, 2015 Recycling www.earth911.com Recycling is the process of taking a product at the end of its useful life and using all or part of it to make another product. The internationally recognized symbol for recycling includes three arrows moving in a triangle. Each arrow represents a different part of the recycling process, from collection to re-manufacture to resale. Recycling reduces our waste sent to landfills, and making new products out of recycled ones reduces the amount of energy needed in production. The U.S. EPA estimates that 75 percent of our waste is recyclable, which goes well beyond what you toss in your recycling bin at home or at school. Recycling serves two key purposes: • It keeps valuable material such as aluminum and paper out of landfills, so this material can be reused in other forms and not wasted. • It prevents hazardous materials and chemicals such as lead and mercury from ending up in landfills, which can contaminate soil and leach into our drinking water • Because of the second purpose, it’s important to recycle lots of products, including those that you might not initially think of recycling. This includes batteries, electronics, motor oil, paint and any product that has “Caution” or “Warning” on the label. Captain, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla Ahoy mateys! Are ye up for adventure? Flushing Wipes Can Clog Your Pipes Pasco County Sanitary Sewer Collection System is a network of sewer lines, manholes, pumping stations and other structures used to collect wastewater and transport it to a treatment plant. With aging infrastructure, Pasco County is battling the problem of “ragging” — when baby wipes, diapers, dental floss, paper towels and other items not designed for flushing entangle sewer pumps. While tree roots and fats, oils, and grease (FOG) have always been the leading causes of sewer backups, in recent years sewer agencies around the country are dealing with the problem of flushable wipes. Toilet paper manufacturing companies have been marketing these wipe products as “flushable” over the last few years, but wastewater professionals are finding out these products are not safe for sewage systems Flushable wipes are supposed to be Oakstead Times H JANUARY 2015 biodegradable and break up like normal toilet paper, but they do not. These wipes stay firmly intact and do not disintegrate. As a result, they will cling to the interior walls of pipeline and/or get hung up on snags inside the pipes. They also clog pumps from transporting sewage to treatment plants and eventually they will destroy the pumps. De-ragging pumps and unclogging pipes is labor intensive and increases the cost of maintaining your sewer system. Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement (vinyasa-style yoga) or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose. Yoga with Janna Wednesdays 11:00am Page 24 Looking for something to do??? Join us on Monday nights at 7pm to play cards. Senior Coffee 50 cents gets you in the game. A SPECIAL INVITATION ...
