Email us at foundation@greencroft.org Why Memorial Gifts Are Important By Jim Neff, Greencroft Communities Foundation Director We meet with a lot of residents who are so happy with the care and services they receive on our campuses. While a majority of these services are covered through resident fees, our communities would look quite different if no one ever made contributions to honor the memories of a beloved family member, friend or neighbor. While most of us cannot give a $1 million gift, all gifts matter and make a significant impact on the care and services residents receive. A simple way to make a gift and to honor the staff and the community where you live, is to list your campus Foundation as a recipient of your memorial gifts. Once the gifts are received, we send each donor a tax deductible receipt and provide a list of donors to your family’s contact person. As a way of saying thank you to you and your donors, all are listed in our Giving magazine (see page 10), which is published periodically throughout the year. Please consider naming your campus’ Foundation as a recipient of memorial gifts and make a lasting impact on the community where you live. If you have questions, please contact me at (574) 537-4708. How To Give To Your Foundation Greencroft Goshen Foundation Oak Grove Foundation Greencroft Middlebury Foundation Southfield Village Foundation Hamilton Grove Foundation Walnut Hills Foundation 1 Groves Couple Leaves $5 Million To Greencroft Largest Gift in Foundation History Elbert and Marion Groves, former residents at Greencroft Goshen (Ind.), left more than $5 million of their estate to the Greencroft Foundation with a significant portion of the estate undesignated for its use. Marion Groves died in 2010 and Elbert Groves died in late 2015. The Groves made Greencroft aware of their intentions in the early 2000s. The estate is currently being processed by Everence Financial Services and the attorney representing the Groves, with final distribution to be completed later this year. “Elbert and Marion were kind, gracious people.” – Mark King, Greencroft CEO & President Although approximately $3.5 million of the amount is undesignated, the Groves pledged $1.1 million in 2002 as part of the capital campaign at Greencroft Goshen at that time which funded endowments for the Homestead (adult day care), the Community Center and the Good Samaritan Fund (resident assistance). In addition, $600,000 of the estate was designated in 2012 as part of the most recent capital campaign at Greencroft Goshen for the newly opened Healthcare facility and remodeling. Both the Greencroft Goshen board and the Greencroft Communities Foundation board are in discussions about how best to use the remaining undesignated funds. No decisions are expected until later in 2016 (see box on page 4). “Elbert and Marion were kind, gracious people,” says Greencroft CEO and President Mark King. “They experienced the wonder of living free of worries in Greencroft Goshen. They desired to make sure we would be able to offer the same level of services to their neighbors, if they needed it. As a World War II veteran, Elbert reached the rank of corporal. 2 Groves Couple Leaves $5 Million To Greencroft (Cont.) Elbert and Marion truly followed the leading of the first century church by striving to care for their neighbors with this gift.” Elbert passed away on Oct. 6, 2015 at the age of 98 at Greencroft Goshen Healthcare where he had resided for several years due to health and memory issues. Elbert was born June 16, 1917 in Laurium, Mich., and married Marion in Evanston, Ill., in 1953. As a youngster, Elbert lived on South Main Street in Goshen. But he also attended schools in St. Petersburg, Fla., and in LaGrange County, Ind. He graduated from Elkhart (Ind.) High School in 1935. Elbert was Rector Scholar at DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind., from which he graduated in 1939. He was also a World War II veteran, reaching the rank of corporal. The last 26 years of Elbert’s working career were spent at Ford Motor Company, from which he retired in 1979. He and his wife moved to the family farm near Benton, Ind., following his retirement. They moved to Greencroft in 1996. Residents’ Council and on a variety of Greencroft committees. she was an active member of the church’s visitation team. At the age of 88, Marion Groves “Elbert and Marion were very passed away in the Greencroft generous people who loved Goshen Healthcare on October to help others,” says Jim Neff, 10, 2010 after an extended illness. As a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Goshen Council on Aging named Elbert Senior of the Year in 1998. According to extant records at Greencroft Foundation, the Groves gift is the largest ever to be received since the Foundation’s inception in the early 1970s. Thomas, Greencroft Communities Foundation Executive Director In the article about the record gift to Greencroft from the Groves couple (see page 2), CEO and President Mark King says, “Elbert and Marion truly followed the leading of the first century church by striving to care for their neighbors with this gift.” The example King suggests comes from a story in Acts 6. There was a dispute in the early Christian church because some widows were being cared for while other widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. But all were a part of the church. So the disciples chose seven men, including Stephen, to care for those in their fellowship who did not have enough to eat. This role of caring for those with needs eventually became known as the diaconate—the word from which deacon is derived. In this special role, trusted leaders distributed the resources of the group in a just and equitable way. In many ways, the work of the Foundation on your campus is a deaconate role. We receive contributions from generous residents and make them available through the Residents’ Benevolence Fund to other needy residents in a fair and equitable manner. Most campuses also have a similar fund—called Employee Assistance Fund--that employees contribute to so they can help other employees in need. There are other, very important ways, that sharing happens through the Foundation. When supporters contribute to a capital campaign, doing so enables the new facility to serve more residents than might have been the case without those contributions. Each of the seven retirement communities in the Greencroft system emerged from a specific faith tradition, and each fosters a similar Christian impulse for residents to help one another. Since ours is a church-related organization, it makes sense to understand the sharing that happens between residents as a deaconate kind of ministry. It is, after all, a New Testament thing!
