www.musto.com MUSTO TECHNICAL SAILING COLLECTION 2013 It’s going to be hard to top 2012 in terms of sport and sailing at its best; the Volvo Ocean Race certainly kept us enthralled as we watched the excitement unfold and the leaders get ahead. At Musto, we were privileged to partner the CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand entry And play our part in getting them onto the podium. We worked with the sailors to improve our kit and kept in close contact to note how the kit performed. This is how we created our toughest range, the HPX Pro Series – learn about it on page 10. Another proud moment for Musto was watching Team GB’s success in Weymouth; Musto began working with the British Sailing Team in the Olympic and Paralympic classes in 2008 with a strict brief; to create sportswear that would regulate their body temperature and allow an immense freedom of movement so the athlete’s performance is not hindered. A close development programme ensued with rigorous on the water testing. The 2012 result; 2 golds, 3 silvers & 1 bronze! PAGES TAMING THE OCEANS So, what’s next? The 2012/13 Vendée Globe Race, the ‘Everest of sailing’, is a pure test of individual endurance where solo sailors set off to become the fastest person to sail non-stop around the globe. This is where reliable kit is essential to the survival of the sailor whether it’s tackling extreme conditions in the Roaring Forties or sweltering in the doldrums. We are pleased to see that over two-thirds of the entries have chosen to take Musto gear. So who will keep it together and push their limits to beat the record of 84 days? 06 FABRIC TECHNOLOGY 08 HPX 12 MPX 18 LPX 22 SILVER STARS 24 BR2 26 BR1 30 34 BREATHABLE DINGHY 38 LAYERING SYSTEM 44 DEFENDERS AND CHALLENGERS 48 EVOLUTION 50 RED YACHT 60 FOOTWEAR 68 GLOVES ACCESSORIES 70 72 HPX PRO SERIES Working with the sailors from CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand has led to the launch of our toughest ever HPX - 12 LPX MUSTO IN THE OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC CLASSES Finally - a hi-fit salopette in out lightest GORE-TEX fabric - p22 ® Musto worked with athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic classes to create products that would not impede their performance - p24 BR1 On and off the water styling with the BR1 Contour Jacket - p30 TAMING THE OCEANS Former Vendée Globe winner Vincent Riou knows that the first step to winning is to finish, and to finish he, and his boat, need to be in tip top condition. Gael Pawson found out more… Vincent Riou isn’t just one of France’s seemingly endless supply of talented solo ocean racers, he’s one of the biggest names in the sport. Forty-year-old Vincent Riou was victorious in the 2004/5 Vendée Globe, having previously been technical coordinator for Michel Desjoyeaux’s PRB, which won in 2000/1. It was the closest finish in the history of the race as Riou crossed the line less than seven hours ahead of secondplaced Jean Le Cam. In 2008 he returned to defend his title, but it wasn’t to be. Just off Cape Horn he went to the rescue of his arch-rival in the previous race, Jean Le Cam, who had lost the bulb off his keel and capsized. Just a few hours later, disaster struck and his boat was dismasted – the dismasting was believed to be due to clipping one of the boat’s outriggers on Le Cam’s upturned keel. Riou was given redress and awarded joint third place in the race, but it wasn’t quite the result he had planned. Undeterred, he soon had a new boat. The fifth PRB was the first of the new generation IMOCA 60s to be launched after the 2008-9 Vendée Globe. Vincent and his new boat were soon busy putting an impressive number of miles under their belts ahead of the next Vendée, with some good results, including a win in the Europa Warm Up and third in the 2011 BtoB Transat. So as the only former winner on the start line of the 2012-13 race, we wondered what it feels like to finish first in this amazing race? ‘It’s fantastic!’ says Vincent. ‘It is a great moment in a sailor’s life. It is really unique.’ Preparing the boat How does Vincent prepare for a race like the Vendée? ‘I try to have the biggest technical preparation I can. I’m meticulous and I like to work on technical improvements. My way of thinking is: if the boat isn’t ready, it is hard to be efficient.’ Vincent’s was the first new boat to be launched, pretty much straight after the 2008-9 race. ‘I’ve sailed a lot with the boat.’ He laughs: ‘I think she has sailed once around the world already! And I’ve trained a lot in solo. PRB is at the height of her power,’ he adds, which bodes well for his chances of success in the 2012-13 race. Preparing the man It isn’t just his boat that’s important, Vincent’s wellbeing is also paramount: ‘For me a sailor’s equipment is critical to his success. It is impossible to be efficient if you don’t have the right clothes at the right time. During the Vendée Globe, we will meet with different climates so I need lots of clothes, from t-shirts to a drysuit!’ Vincent views his sailing kit as a knight heading into battle would see his armour: ‘Your clothes are your protection in this unfriendly environment. Musto is the best for that. I’ve chosen the best improvements.’ of the sailors that take on its immense challenge and, win or lose, they come back again and again. ‘All my preparation, all my training has been organised to reach my goal: the Vendée Globe,’ explains Vincent. What draws him back to the race? The answer is both the competition, and the race’s unique ability to deliver some amazing experiences: ‘The start and the arrival is incredible. The Cape Horn and the arrival in the Southern Seas are also different. There is something special in these moments.’ Most of us can only experience these amazing moments through sailors like Vincent Riou and with today’s technology, these solo sailors are able to share film footage, photos and stories with their followers. But we can experience many of the technological advances and developments that have come about as a result of the boundaries he and his fellow sailors continue to push. The results can be seen in the boats we all sail, and the clothing we all wear as the lessons learned in the most extreme environments and challenging of conditions help to develop better and better protection for those who battle with the elements. Thanks to sailors like Vincent Riou, not only do we get to share some amazing experiences, we are also warmer and drier than ever before. It isn’t just the boat designs that have seen huge technological leaps over the years. New materials and technologies have seen improvements year on year and today’s sailing clothing is very different from the clothing of 30, 20, or even 10 years ago. When Vincent started sailing things were very different: ‘The suits weren’t breathable…. we were dripping… we were wet and we didn’t know the reason, was it sea water or perspiration?’ Today, the equipment allows sailors to sail at their best in all conditions. ‘The fact that the suits are now breathable and waterproof, and the latex cuffs keep out the water, means we are always dry. The most important thing is to be warm and dry,’ says Vincent. Winning ingredients So, apart from a great boat and top-level clothing, what does it take to win the Vendée Globe Race? ‘You need to be brilliant in different fields. The winner is not the one who is the best in only one field. Our sport needs lots of qualities, you really need to be skilful.’ It seems that when it come to winning the Vendée Globe, once isn’t enough. This race gets into the blood 7 FABRIC TECHNOLOGY Keith Musto first started developing clothing for his own Olympic campaign in 1964. After winning a silver medal for Great Britain, he returned home to develop sailing clothing using his intimate understanding of the sport with his technical engineering skills. Musto have been equipping world class sailors ever since and have built a reputation on creating quality, innovative, performance-driven clothing to meet sailor’s needs, even in the most extreme conditions. Today, MUSTO offer a full range of technical sailing clothing designed specifically to meet the various requirements of your sailing, your type of boat and the conditions that you may encounter. Here’s a guide to what you might need… TECHNICAL CLOTHING CATEGORIES Engineered using 3-layer GORETEX® Pro product technology for maximum ruggedness to withstand extended use in extreme conditions. The Ocean Technology® membrane is 3x thicker than the standard GORE-TEX® membrane and all components have strict performance specifications to ensure optimum strength. GORE™ Micro Grid Backer technology improves garment comfort and performance using an innovative internal backer fabric. This technology improves internal abrasion and snag resistance, enhances garment breathability and decreases garment weight. It also allows the garment to slide easily over mid-layers. Constructed using 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro product technology for superior breathability, durability and waterproofness. The GORE-TEX® membrane is 2x thicker than the standard GORE-TEX® membrane and garments are designed to be the best protection for prolonged periods facing foul weather conditions. MPX Race Garments feature Stretch GORE-TEX® fabric panels to offer greater freedom of movement for high activity racing. GORE-TEX® Pro garments must pass Gore’s toughest test conditions and most aggressive rainstorm test. Fabricated from a lightweight 3-layer GORE-TEX® for high activity sailing in warmer conditions. LPX garments are stripped-out and lightweight, just like high performance sailing boats. This unique 3-layer GORE-TEX® fabric is exclusive to Musto in the marine market and offers extreme breathability, wind and waterproof protection. These lightweight garments are the ideal solution for day sailing, travel, hiking, golf or other activities where space and weight are critical. A protective layer on the inside of the GORE-TEX® membrane makes a separate lining unnecessary. The result: high performance, minimum weight and pack volume. Full Technical Specification Available Online: www.musto.com 9 WINDSTOPPER® The WINDSTOPPER® membrane is an ultra thin protective layer which is laminated to a lightweight textile layer, making it totally windproof. It is made of the versatile polymer PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) which is expanded to create a microporous structure. These micropores are 900 times larger than water vapor molecules, allowing perspiration to pass through unhindered. This means that the WINDSTOPPER® membrane adds total windproofness to any textile without perceivably restricting its initial breathability or weight. OUTDRY® An innovative technology to waterproof garments where the standard manufacturing techniques based on seam-sealed waterproof fabrics cannot be utilised. The OutDry® patented lamination process is such that the waterproof/breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of the garment, perfectly sealing any possible water entry point. ARCTEC FLEECE Arctec high loft fleece is a breakthrough in durable, personal insulation - trusted by our test team to preserve core body temperature and maintain optimum working muscle temperature, even in bitter Southern Ocean conditions. Arctec fleece is soft, lightweight, warm and comfortable. Tiny air pockets in the super high loft fabric structure retain body heat whilst the lightweight breathable properties ensure rapid moisture transfer - keeping you dry, comfortable and warm with minimum bulk. It is hydrophobic, holding less than 1% of it’s weight in water, it retains much of its insulating powers - even when wet - and highly breathable, allowing perspiration to readily pass through the fabric. These qualities make it ideal for making clothing intended to be used during extreme physical activity. D3O® IMPACT PROTECTION D3O® containing intelligent molecules is flexible and moves with the wearer yet locks together on impactabsorbing energy & providing superior protection. D3O® outperforms conventional soft foams of the same thickness on impact by up to six times. SCHOELLER® Hard wearing fabric using Kevlar®, an aramide fibre which is, gram for gram, five times stronger than steel. CORDURA® CORDURA® fabric provides rugged durable performance for a variety of end uses, including luggage, footwear and performance apparel. Products made with CORDURA® fabrics feature enhanced tear and abrasion resistance, and long -lasting durability which means a longer garment lifetime. CORDURA® fabric is constructed with qualifying yarns which are woven, dyed and finished in accordance with INVISTA’s approved fabric standards for the CORDUR® brand. NILIT® BODYFRESH Smooth, comfortable, high performance antibacterial yarn which provides increased, freshness through effective antibacterial action using silver ion technology. THERMOLITE® Hollow-core fibre technology provides the most warmth at the lightest weight. The larger the surface area allows for faster evaporation by speeding moisture away from the skin to the surface of the fabric where it can evaporate more quickly. COOLMAX® COOLMAX® fabric is the performance fabric that includes an effective fiber-based moisture management system. The system can move perspiration away from the body, and through the fabric, where it can evaporate quickly, allowing the wearer the feel cooler and more comfortable. SUN PROTECTION A novel weave structure and denier produces sun protective properties. Fabrics have also been treated with chemicals effective at absorbing UV light during the manufacturing process. INSULATION WIND RESITANT Musto insulation fabrics are engineered to create small air pockets which trap escaping body heat and retain warmth. Musto wind resistant fabrics will reduce wind chill and retain body heat. WINDJAMMER BREATHABLE EVOLUTION Musto windjammer fabrics feature a membrane or coating which provide a windproof and breathable barrier and prevent the loss of body heat. Breathable evolution fabrics offer waterproof and breathable protection against the elements. FAST DRY WATERPROOF Musto fast dry fabrics are designed to wick away moisture and quickly return to dry weight. Musto waterproof products are seam-taped and offer 100% waterproof protection. DWR THERMO REGULATION Musto durable water repellent treated fabrics are coated with a polymer which encourages surface water to bead and rub off, reducing both weight and drying time. From the first day of racing they were bubbling with enthusiasm, enjoying every second. Luke’s reaction to the first day was infectious: ‘Loved it! It was champagne yachting; it was windy it was wet and it was fast and we love that!’ Both Luke, who has the diminutive frame of a typical 470 helmsman, but with enough personality to fill a football pitch, and Stuart, the giant crew, who towers above his teammate, seemed to be wearing massive grins all week! ©Skandia Team GBR They might know how to have fun but this team is deadly serious about its racing. They showed they had the measure of Weymouth, pushing the older, experienced Australian duo, who were clear favourites for gold, all the way, and very nearly upsetting the form book. ‘Weymouth’s a tricky venue,’ explains Luke. ‘Sometimes you find your rhythm and it clunks and it clicks and it feels easy, but someone in the same race who’s not in their rhythm would say: “Wow that was a really difficult course today.” There’s no secrets and there’s no magic, it’s just about finding your rhythm, getting in a good place and letting that tick over for the hour-long race.’ They certainly ticked throughout the event, guaranteeing silver, and then pushing hard for gold in the medal race. The fact that they couldn’t beat the Australians didn’t dampen their joy. They had sailed brilliantly, and taken Olympic silver at their first Games. They were winners. Stuart explains their approach: ‘We worked really, really hard up until the Olympics. At the opening ceremony we thought: “Right we’ve done all we can do, let’s go and have fun… we’re not gonna to do any better or worse by not having fun!” So we took that approach and it was an absolute hoot all the way.’ He adds: ‘Myself and Luke are both very cheery characters and we get along really, really well - and it’s such a huge opportunity the Olympics, that you’d be mad not to enjoy the experience and have some fun. Don’t get me wrong, when we’re racing and we’re doing boatwork we’re serious, but we’re having fun on the way.’ Not only were they were on good form, but they were also confident in their preparation. ‘The main thing for me, and for Luke, was quietening the demons in his head… Knowing that ©Skandia Team GBR we’d done all the training and we were as best prepared as we could be,’ says Stuart. ‘We spend a lot of time getting sorted getting the boat ready for the Olympics. In 2010 we lost the world championship due to gear failure, so we were pretty adamant that wasn’t going to happen. The boat was in pristine condition.’ They also knew the venue inside out. It might have been their first Olympics, but they didn’t let it overwhelm them: ‘We thought it would be more nerve-wracking and it would feel different, but the only real difference is the sail says GBR all over it and there’s a massive clock on the committee boat counting down…’ says Luke. ‘Racing 470s round a course for an hour putting our hearts and souls into it… that feels normal.’ Sailing-addicted You might think Luke and Stuart would be ready for a holiday after the intensity of the Olympic regatta. Not Stuart, he was straight off to the Merlin Rocket National Championship, which he won, this time sitting at the back of the boat. ‘I absolutely love sailing and I love helming boats. As I’ve been crewing mostly in the 470 it was nice for me to do an event with a stick in my hand, which was really good fun.’ than me - potentially just a wetsuit and maybe a technical rash vest under that, but not really a drytop, unless it’s really cold!’ In his home waters of Scotland maybe! It’s a common theme, even the top professional sailors often can’t keep away from the water, why is that? ‘It’s a great sport, it’s forever changing, it’s always very different so it’s actually hard to get bored of it! If you get bored of Weymouth then go to Palma!’ says Stuart. Just as Musto’s story started with an Olympic silver medal, so it seems that Luke and Stuart are headed for more great things. They had barely reached the shore before announcing their desire to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. ‘We’ll maybe have a slightly more relaxed six months and build up from there onwards,’ says Stuart. Whatever they do, they are sure to be having fun. Gael Pawson That doesn’t mean there aren’t tough times: ‘It is sometimes tiring in the winter and you’ve got to get your wet wetsuit on for the sixth day in a row,’ Stuart acknowledges… which of course is when the right kit is key. ‘Skandia Team GBR is very fortunate to be sponsored by Musto and the technology and the equipment that as elite sailors we need to be training in the winter. Certainly for me training in winter, a drysuit keeps me dry and warm – it makes it a little bit more bearable.’ The future The kit changes when they are at an event: ‘I try to keep off the drysuits in racing purely because of the aerodynamics and flexibility. I’ll generally wear a wetsuit and spray top, or if it’s a bit colder, a MPX dry smock – the breathable one, which keeps the top half of your body dry. For me that’s an absolute lifesaver stood out on that wire, standing in the wind doing nothing! ‘Luke’s slightly different, he’s generally working a lot harder. There are some conditions in the 470 where I’ll stand on the wire and not do much really, so I’m a sitting duck for getting cold! But Luke’s a lot more manoeuvrable and he’s always working the boat, so he’s wearing less ©Skandia Team GBR The medalists join Musto for the launch of the AW12 lifestyle collection 25 BR2 BR2 Offshore offers exceptional levels of waterproof, breathable and hardwearing protection for offshore enthusiasts who spend a lot of time on the water. A close development programme ensued with great attention to detail and rigorous on the water testing. Modern technology aside, this brief was much the same as when Keith Musto first began to develop sailing clothing for his Olympic campaign in 1964. Surrounded by an aura of prestige, magic and glamour, it has inspired the rich, the famous and the very top sailors throughout its 160year history. Fortunes have been lost trying to win it, legends made losing it. Heroes and villains, secrecy and intrigue and the cutting edge of technology are the ingredients that have given it a status that is second to none. Where it all started When the yacht America won a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851 it was the start of the oldest international sporting trophy in the world – predating even the modern Olympics and the Ashes. ‘There is no second,’ Queen Victoria was told as her aides strained to see which boat followed the yacht ‘America’ as she crossed the finish. The ‘100 Guinea Cup’, as it was then known, which had been put up by Britain’s Royal Yacht Squadron, travelled back to America with its winner, and there it was set to stay for over 100 years. The trophy was donated to the New York Yacht Club as ‘a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations’… and so the America’s Cup was born. The forefront of technology The America’s Cup is perhaps the most difficult sporting trophy to win. In the more than 160 years since that first race, only three other nations have won it – Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland. It truly is a Holy Grail. Since its origins lie in a match designed for Britain to show off its superior yacht technology, the boats have pushed the technological boundaries of their day. Budgets are huge, and no expense is spared to harness the fastest designs and the best crew. The America’s Cup is a demanding and expensive challenge, breaking new ground in yacht design, materials and construction. But it’s not just the boats themselves that are at the forefront of technology; the same applies to every element of each challenge, from weather to nutrition and clothing. Modern history Australia was the first nation to take the trophy away from American waters, when Australia II, featuring a revolutionary keel design, won in 1983. America won the Cup straight back in 1987, but then in 1995, New Zealand won and became the first non-American team to successfully defend the Cup in Auckland in 2000. In 2003, Switzerland’s Alinghi challenged and won, so the Cup finally returned to Europe. The Swiss, lacking suitable waters of their own, took the competition to Valencia in Spain, where they again won. Then a host of legal challenges kept the competition in the law courts and until the judges ordered a ‘Deed of Gift’ race, which was run in Valencia in 2010 between just one Challenger and the Defender. That’s when BMW Oracle won – returning the Cup to America once again… this time San Francisco. The format The America’s Cup The format for each edition of the America’s Cup (San Francisco 2013 will be the 34th) is agreed between the Cup holder, and the Challengers. In recent times (apart from the 2010 match) the Cup format has involved a Challenger Series – the Louis Vuitton Cup – where all the teams hoping to win the Cup from its holder race sail one another, first in one-on-one ‘round-robin’ matches to decide a seeding, then a knock-out series. The cards are stacked in favour of the Cup holder, known as the Defender, as it simply goes straight into the final, where they face the winner of the Challenger Series. For the 2013 America’s Cup the Defender will be Oracle Team USA, with four Challengers: Artemis Racing (Sweden), Team Korea (Korea), Luna Rossa (Italy) and Emirates Team New Zealand. For the 2013 Challenger Series and America’s Cup proper, the teams step up to larger craft; 72-foot catamarans with solid ‘wing sails’ that tower some 130 feet off the water. It is the first time a fleet of multihulls, designed to the same rule has raced in the event. The windy and waves of San Francisco Bay promise to add plenty of drama, on a much larger scale than with the smaller 45’s. The boats will be fast, very fast, and many if not all seem to feature hydrofoils. These are special foils that enable the boats to lift up and skim along, with their hulls above the water. The New Zealand boat has already been spotted ‘flying’, and the American’s first boat showed foils on the daggerboard and rudder during its maiden sail. With the boats approaching 40 knots, the chase boats will struggle to keep up. This is the fastest, the most technologically advanced racing in the world. Gael Pawson The America’s Cup World Series As a warm up to the 2013 America’s Cup proper, a series in smaller boats with additional, lower-funded teams, has been running - with the final events early in 2013. Competing on this circuit are all the Challengers, the Defender, as well as Ben Ainslie Racing (Great Britain), Energy Team (France) and China Team. The World Series is run on small courses close to shore in 45ft multihulls. The boats are identical and the racing is fast, furious full of drama. Capsizing is all part of the game. For the sailors, their kit needs to be light, flexible and yet warm. These are physical boats, and the athleticism they demand has led to the development of lighter and more flexible garments.
