Supporting BREAST CANCER Research & Care Professor Barrett Lee receives a donation from Kingsley Jones on behalf of In the Pink More than 2,500 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Wales each year, and the incidence is rising. More than half of these women will be treated, supported and cared for at Velindre Cancer Centre. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer. The total number of cancer cases are projected to increase by 55% by the year 2030 due to our growing and ageing population. More people in Wales survive cancer now than ever before thanks to early detection and better treatments. Velindre Cancer Centre is well known for being the largest non-surgical Hospital in Wales and providing Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy and other specialised treatments. It is not so well known that Velindre Cancer Centre also manages an active, extensive and award winning programme of research into a wide variety of cancers. The Pink Appeal at Velindre Cancer Centre is led by Professor Peter Barrett-Lee and Dr Jacinta Abraham. Prof Barrett-Lee is a Chair of breast cancer studies at Cardiff University and Dr Abraham is also a recipient of a prestigious research grant from the Academic Health Science Fellowship from National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR). They lead a team of clinical and scientific researchers who are well known for their work on discovering why some breast cancers become resistant to some forms of antioestrogen therapy (such as tamoxifen) and identifying the molecular pathways in the cell that enable this to happen. This research has recently been cited at the prestigious San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in Texas USA. One of our consultants, Dr Annabel Borley, was supported by the Pink Appeal and published important work on how the cell surface molecules E-cadherin and ß-catenin may play a role in resistance to anti-oestrogen therapy and also allow cancer cells to spread around the body. Breast Cancer Laboratory Research Projects The team are now embarking on an exciting new phase of research in collaboration with colleagues at Cardiff University, which will involve growing breast cancer cells from patients in the laboratory as so-called “Mammospheres” and testing these tissues at various stages of disease to better understand the effect of new treatments and how the cells may change over time. The project has ethical approval and needs your support! A cornerstone of breast cancer research is the concept of “Bench to Bedside … and back”. This means discoveries in the laboratory (bench) are translated into treatments for patients (bedside). However, not all treatments work perfectly first time, so we to go back to our scientists in the laboratories and investigate further to overcome these difficulties. This means very close co-operation between Breast Cancer Doctors and Scientists if we are to be successful. Funding is therefore essential to allow us to “Breed these Clinical Researchers of the Future” – as they provide the vital link between laboratory (bench) and patients (bedside). Our scientists have had tremendous success in investigating why some breast cancers spread around the body and how we might prevent this problem. We have also recently identified a cell surface protein that may play a vital role in explaining why some breast cancers come back several years later. This work has been presented at major international conferences and published in major learned journals. However, we need continued support to bring this work to fruition for the benefits of our patients. Clinical Research Fellowships believe that in the future, and with “yourWesupport, more and more patients will be successfully treated for breast cancer. It will happen! We are committed to making it happen, and the money you raise will be crucial! Professor Peter Barrett-Lee Materials and Equipment This research is not possible without high tech equipment and laboratory materials and reagents. Funding here will enable our clinical and laboratory scientists to achieve our aims of taking research from our Laboratories into real treatments for patients in our clinics at Velindre Cancer Centre. ” The very finest specialists, physicians, “scientists and caring professionals at Working together to deliver excellence Together, with the money you raise, “which is being spent directly on research, local development projects and training, we will improve the care and outcomes for patients with early and secondary breast cancer in Wales. Dr Jacinta Abraham ” Please cut here Supporting BREAST CANCER Research & Care Velindre changed my breast cancer horror story into a heartfelt healing experience. What’s more, safe hands and kind smiles saved me from dispair. Life is now filled with laughter and a lovely new breast, thanks to Velindre. Heulwen Haf ”
