Temple B'nai Israel
From the desk of Rabbi Mann:
On the right side of the Bima in the
Piellet Sanctuary there is a beautiful
bronze piece of art which was donated in
the honor of Blanche and Peter Morris. It
reads: Hinay ma tov u’ma na’im shehvet
achim gam yachad.
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers (and sisters) to dwell together
in unity.
Whom do we include in the reference
“brothers and sisters”? When the Torah
commands us: “Love thy neighbor as thyself”, who is the neighbor whom one shall
love? Is it only a co-religionist? Is it only
my next-door neighbor but not one three
blocks away? Or does it even include a
neighbor on the far side of town (perhaps
even in the ‘so-called’ inner-city?) Is my
neighbor any and every human being,
irrespective of distance, since we all inhabit this world as neighbors?
Obviously, there are many levels of
relating to the Other. Some of us love
(some of) our friends more than siblings.
Some find it easier to love long-distance
neighbors more than next-door neighbors.
Or as the saying goes: “High fences make

In Aurora, during the last several
years, I (and others) have sought to develop ways of joining our neighbors of
other Faith communities in a variety of
activities in order to foster closer ties.

One of those events is an annual InterFaith Thanksgiving Service which rotates
annually among the sponsoring synagogues, mosques and churches. Last year
Wesley United Methodist Church hosted
it. This year Temple B’nai Israel will host
it. You are all urged to participate in a
wonderful show of unity among faith communities on a day devoted to Thanksgiving to G-d for our manifold blessings (as
they say in Yiddish: “It could always be
worse !”) At the conclusion of the service
a collection of voluntary “gifts” will be
taken which will be forwarded to the
Aurora United Way. Please note the

by many of his family and friends at
Temple B’nai Israel.

The Scribe
Temple B’nai Israel’s Message from the President
Dear Temple Family,
September and October are
chocked full of Jewish holidays.
Can’t say that for November. The
only holiday I know about in November is Thanksgiving. I remember a coworker once asking if I (a
Jew) celebrated Thanksgiving. Yes,
Jewish people enjoy the holiday of
turkey and stuffing—it’s a national
holiday like 4th of July. If there’s a
time to get friends and family together to eat—we Jews are all
about it!
We may be low on holidays—but
November is full of Temple events
that include field trips, speakers
and movies—and of course Shabbat
services.
The month begins with the fall
Rummage Sale. Sisterhood supports the Temple with womenpower and financial donations. So—
the more items we have to sell at
the Rummage Sale—the more
money we bring in—the more the
Temple receives. A Win-win for all.
On the following Sunday, a
group of us will be touring the new
Illinois Holocaust Museum. That
should be quite an experience. On
Tuesday, the 10th, Sisterhood will
be meeting at Mutual Ground. I am
very pleased to be able to show my
workplace to my Temple family.
Mutual Ground provides services
for victims of domestic violence and
sexual assault. It’s a place of safety.
It’s a place of strength.
raises funds to support needy
causes in our community and in the
Jewish world at large. Please attend and consider support for this
important organization.
The first movie night of the season will be Sunday, Nov. 22nd at our
home. This group likes to talk, eat
and enjoy good films. This film is
Waltz With Bashir. All are welcome—just bring a dish to pass.
Only a few days later, Rabbi is
planning a special interfaith service
on ‘Erev’ Thanksgiving. Last year
the service was held at Wesley
Methodist, this year it’s at B’nai
Israel. Hope you will all join us.
And then—finally—Thanksgiving.
Saturday evening, Nov. 14 is our
annual New Member Social. This is
an evening designed so that the
newbies can meet the rest of us and
we can get to know all the newbies.
Sarene has graciously donated her
home—all we have to do bring a
dish to pass. Those who are relatively new to TBI—please join us.
And those who say they don’t know
everyone—this is your chance to
change that.
And when you think about donations—and there are so many good
causes out there—please remember—no one else is going to support
the Temple. Your Fair Share gift
will make a difference.
The next morning (Sunday, Nov.
15th) is the Aurora Jewish Welfare
Fund annual presentation. AJWF
Thank you!
Judy
From the Mail
Dear Temple Family and Friends,
We want to thank everyone who helped to make my Bar-Mitzvah celebration such a wonderful day to remember.
We also want to thank everyone who stepped up to help when Katie was transferred to the University of Chicago Hospital. From cooking to shopping, we could not have done this alone.
Thank you for all the support, well wishes and phone calls of concern for Katie!
We love our extended Family.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Special Gift Fund
The Aurora Jewish Community traditionally presents a gift to each of our Bar & Bat Mitzvah celebrants. It is a lovely custom, dating back at least to the 1930s. The gift is a collection of donations from our congregants.
Many congregants ask to be included in all of the presentation. Some prefer to pick and choose. If
you want to be included on any of the upcoming B’nai Mitzvah, please call or send a check at least
one week in advance for $5.00 each. This will allow time for the preparation of the congratulatory
card listing all of the contributors.
Please make checks payable to: Temple B’nai Israel Special Gifts and mail it to:
Rhoda Melnicoff,
for any questions.

The Aurora Jewish Welfare Fund is celebrating both its and Israel’s 61st anniversary with a presentation by Lucy Marshal of South Elgin. Lucy will recount her experiences last semester as a student at the NFTY‐EIE (Eisendrath International Exchange) High School in Israel. For over 40 years, the Reform Movement has been sending youth to Israel with this four‐month accredited high school nestled in the Judean mountains. The students live, learn, and grow together on a kibbutz as a community as they explore four thousand years of Jewish memory, learn Hebrew, and come to know Israel as their second home. Come and see the slides and listen to Lucy bring the stories to life! Sunday, November 15 When: Where: Temple B’nai Israel 400 N. The Addams Family Musical
Sunday, December 6, 2009
Ford Theater for Performing Arts,
Chicago
They're creepy and they're kooky, and they're headed to Chicago before
they open on Broadway. "The Addams Family," a new large-scale tuner
based on the cartoons of Charles Addams, aims to be the hit of the season.
We can enjoy this show and raise a little money for the Temple at the same
time.
Two-time Tony Award® winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth star in this
magnificently macabre new show created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall
Brickman & Rick Elice. The Addams Family Musical is a completely new twist
on the age-old saga; to their horror, Morticia and Gomez are forced to be
parents to daughter Wednesday when she hits that certain age and decides
that being nice is the way to be.
Word is, The Addams Family musical is set to be so amazingly popular that,
though the run on Broadway doesn’t begin until spring 2010, all tickets will
be gone by then. But, we can see it here in Chicago—before it ever gets to
Broadway.
We have reserved a small block of 1st Balcony tickets for
Sunday, 12/6 at 2:00pm, cost $100/person. Your check made
payable to Temple B’nai Israel must accompany your
reservation.
