FOUR FACES OF CANCUN
Cancun’s Hotel Zone is an island nestled on 14 miles of white powdery sand beaches
shaped like a number “7” and two bodies of water - the turquoise blue crystal waters
of the Caribbean Sea and the salt-water Nichupte Lagoon. The island is joined to the
mainland by bridges on the north and south ends. Kukulcan (“coo-cool- KAHN”)
Boulevard is the main thoroughfare on the island. Addresses are often given by kilometer number on Kukulcan Boulevard.
Cancun City, usually referred to as downtown, is on the mainland and is concentrated
in an area of about twenty square blocks. Its main thoroughfare is Avenida Tulum.
The Hotel Zone is about 12-15 miles from downtown Cancun. Addresses in Cancun
City are listed by referring to the “manzana” (block) represented by the letters MZ.,
or “super manzana” (group of blocks represented by the letters SM). Heading south,
Tulum Avenue becomes the highway to the airport, to Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Following Tulum Avenue to the north it becomes the road to Puerto
Juárez, where ferries depart for Isla Mujeres, one of several options.
Other areas that round out the Cancun region include Playa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres.
Playa Mujeres is an emerging region just to the north of downtown Cancun, and facing
Isla Mujeres. The Playa Mujeres Golf Club is here, in addition to several major resort
developments (Villa Group, Excellence, among others). Isla Mujeres maintains its old
Caribbean charm, fun day outings and some spectacular beaches, like Playa Norte.
