They are immersed in the history of the building through interactive study. Study Trips are an effective way for students to learn about the history of the community. Last year the Embassy hosted 13 Study Trips. Education Advisory Council: The council created this year and consists of teachers, volunteers and others who care about education and the Embassy. This group is instrumental in providing feedback and advice on how to reach teachers and students and what to offer them. Learn it Live: More than 1,600 schoolchildren filled the Embassy for Black Journey. This live stage show featured 200 years of African-American music, heritage and tradition. SCORE!: This past summer, the Embassy offered a new three- week summer day-camp to 22 middle-school students called SCORE! The students created, from scratch, their own musical —words, the music, the dancing, all of it—and they performed it on the Embassy stage. The fiscal year which ended, August 31, 2013, resulted in total revenue of $3,438,893 and marked the eighth consecutive year in the black. The Embassy maintains strong cash reserves as well as an additional $1,374,594 in investments. Total Revenue $ 400,823 147,472 $ 216,095 $ 77,621 $ 82,724 $ $ 3,438,893 3,664,135 $ Expenses Programs General and administrative Fundraising Special events $ 1,273,952 360,488 $ 138,430 $ 75,209 $ $ $ 1,178,797 392,517 $ 113,752 $ 77,148 Total Expenses $ 1,848,079 $ 1,762,214 For the second year in a row, total revenue was more than $3.4mm. Although total revenue decreased $225,242 from last year, unrestricted contributions increased by $39,884, an increase of more than 25 percent. Gifts restricted for future facility projects and programs (Vision for the Embassy, terra cotta repairs and the Embassy’s expanded youth-focused programming) remained strong. Even though the total number of events decreased, rental revenue remained steady and special events revenue increased by $6,064. Perhaps the most encouraging numbers are reflected in concession and merchandise where the Embassy recorded an increase of $75,866. The majority of this increase corresponds to obtaining a liquor license and resulting in our ability to offer an expanded selection of products for both stage and catered events. Total number of patrons were down just slightly, causing $6,117 less in theatre restoration fee per ticket and $14,933 less in box office-related revenue. Embassy-originated programming — the Black and White film series featuring the Grande Page Organ and the Down the Line series —continued to perform well. Expenses increased this year by a total of $85,865 due mostly to the expansion of our educational programming – the Embassy launched a three-week intensive musical theater program for middle school students – and the expanded liquor license which added paid bartenders and increased liquor inventory. The Embassy continued to be proactive in upkeep of the hisoric building and completed the third and final phase of the building’s terra cotta repairs. The Embassy also purchased a new cash register system for the front of house to better track inventory and offer more points of sale. Approximately $43,000 of fundraising expense is related to the Vision for the Embassy capital project. The Embassy continued to maintain a diversified portfolio for investment accounts. During the fiscal year, a net realized gain on investments of $107,937 and a net unrealized loss of investments of $24,955 were recorded. Interest and dividend income increased by $5,055. It was another good year for the Embassy.
