And, it has been a very successful year! Since we launched CUEED last October, we have accomplished quite a bit. This, our first newsletter, highlights our successes, accomplishments, and future initiatives. Walking down Halsey Street in Newark, you can see the impact CUEED has had on the revitalization of Newark. Through our partners, we were able to obtain funding for several businesses on Halsey Street. As a result of our efforts, the City of Newark has named Halsey Street a demonstration project, set aside funds for façade and streetscape improvements, and added parking. CUEED’s vision is to be recognized locally and throughout the world as the leading Center for innovative thinking and research and stimulation of entrepreneurial activity in urban environments. This year we launched the Entrepreneurship Pioneers Initiative (EPI), providing training and counseling to first-generation entrepreneurs. In conjunction with our partners, we held various seminars that engaged and educated the community. CUEED’s vision is that it is recognized locally and throughout the world as the leading Center for innovative thinking and research and stimulation of entrepreneurial activity in urban environments. We work across constituencies to create new knowledge and tools that build thriving urban communities. EPI is a comprehensive program developing entrepreneurs in the North Jersey region that invests in the human and social capital of first generation entrepreneurs. Selected participants receive intensive training to help them grow their business, group and 1-on-1 counseling, networking opportunities, and mentoring. EPI gained a great deal of attention in Northern New Jersey, receiving hundreds of applications of which 50 were chosen. The 50 entrepreneurs gathered at the Paul Robeson Center at the Rutgers Newark campus and were excited to get started. “The goal is for these entrepreneurs to take their businesses to the next level,” said Instructor LaTanya Junior lectures emerging entrepreneurs taking part in CUEED’s Entrepreneurship Pioneers Initiative which seeks to grow businesses and create jobs. Past Events In conjunction with various partners, CUEED hosted several conferences and seminars throughout the year. Below is a highlight of those events. CUEED Research Assembly The purpose of this event was to bring together researchers from various universities with a common interest in Urban Entrepreneurship to exchange research perspectives and ideas. This event focused on the future of CUEED and its role in the urban renaissance of Newark, New Jersey. This initiative was funded by the President of Rutgers University. In August 2009, Peter Learmont received funding from the Profeta Fund to purchase equipment that would allow him to expand his business, Porta Print Publishing, by bringing in-house jobs that had been outsourced. Street In addition, small businesses on Halsey Street have received consulting services from students enrolled in the Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development course. Students have provided marketing advice, accounting assistance, review and development of business plans, and other support to The Coffee Cave; Newark Art Supply; Cravings, A Caterer; and Porta Print Publishing. Keep your eyes open to a new business coming to Halsey Street, that will provide more food options. Cravings is a small gourmet restaurant with catering services. It is scheduled to open in Spring 2010. Along with Rutgers School of Law, Greater Newark Business Development Consortium, and New Jersey Public Policy Research Institute, CUEED hosted a panel discussion that explored the current state of affairs for minority- and women-owned businesses in New Jersey, the public policy challenges these firms face in contracting with New Jersey state, county, and local government agencies, and what can be done to improve the overall landscape. Essex County Green Business VIP Breakfast Launch In partnership with the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District and ecooventions, CUEED hosted the Essex County Green Business VIP Breakfast Launch. Attendees heard from local industry leaders on the state of the Green Economy, Minority & Women Owned Businesses, and Local Green Businesses, and had a preview of what to expect at the Essex County Green Business Summit in 2010. The Conference will engage business and organization scholars in a discussion of social entrepreneurship theory and practice. The aim of this conference is to bring together various international perspectives on social entrepreneurship from scholars and practitioners for discussion and collaboration. Elevating Women in the 21st Century: A Panel and Workshop for Social Entrepreneurs In March, academic, community, and cultural leaders focused on empowering women through education and economic development. Panelists and participants spoke candidly about their mission, challenges, struggles, and about opportunities that existed to support social entrepreneurship. The event provided women with insight into some of the problems women face as entrepreneurs, as well as solutions to those problems. The panelists included Toni Blackman (Founder, Lyrical Ambassador/ Echoing Green Fellow), Jamilah B Creekmur (VP of Marketing, Allhiphop.com), Dr. Roxanne Shante (Pioneer MC and Founder, Hip-Hop Ices), and Dawn Lewis, (Founder, Pooka Pure and Simple). This event was in partnership with the Hip Hop Association and NJPAC-Alternate Hip Hop Festival. The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development 5 New CUEED Professors and Visiting Scholars STEP program increasing likelihood of student graduation CUEED has added to its think tank of knowledge. We would like to welcome our new professors, Arturo Osorio, Quintus Jett, and Ian Williamson and our visiting scholars Jiao Hao, Cui Yu, Abha Rishi, and Vincent Ogutu. We also have our first Ph.D. student, James Mason, working with the Center. Our faculty and visiting scholars bring with them a wealth of experience and rich backgrounds that will help us fulfill our mission.
