The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship &
Economic Development (CUEED)
celebrates 1st year
The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) is
celebrating its 1st year. And, it has been a very successful year! Since we launched CUEED
last October, we have accomplished quite a bit. This, our first newsletter, highlights
our successes, accomplishments, and future initiatives. Walking down Halsey Street in
Newark, you can see the impact CUEED has had on the revitalization of Newark. Through
our partners, we were able to obtain funding for several businesses on Halsey Street. As a
result of our efforts, the City of Newark has named Halsey Street a demonstration project,
set aside funds for façade and streetscape improvements, and added parking.
CUEED’s vision is to be recognized locally and throughout the
world as the leading Center for innovative thinking and research
and stimulation of entrepreneurial activity in urban environments.
This year we launched the Entrepreneurship Pioneers Initiative (EPI), providing training
and counseling to first-generation entrepreneurs. In conjunction with our partners, we
held various seminars that engaged and educated the community.

Entrepreneurship Pioneers Initiative (EPI) helps entrepreneurs grow, create jobs
On May 15th, the Entrepreneurs Pioneers
Initiative kicked off its first session. EPI
is a comprehensive program developing
entrepreneurs in the North Jersey region
that invests in the human and social
capital of first generation entrepreneurs.
Selected participants receive intensive
training to help them grow their business,
group and 1-on-1 counseling, networking
opportunities, and mentoring.
EPI gained a great deal of attention in
Northern New Jersey, receiving hundreds
of applications of which 50 were chosen.
The 50 entrepreneurs gathered at the Paul
Robeson Center at the Rutgers Newark
campus and were excited to get started.
“The goal is for these entrepreneurs to take
their businesses to the next level,” said
