Fitness Over 50 finds a partner in OSU Federal
Fitness Over 50 finds a partner in OSU Federal Fitness Over 50, a locally owned fitness club in Corvallis, has become the “go to” favorite for hundreds of adults looking for a different take on overall wellness. That’s because founder and president Jason Wallis designed it to feel like a social venue. “When people walk in, we want them to feel welcome,” Jason says, describing the atmosphere at Fitness Over 50. “I want people to feel like I’m their fitness partner, not just the owner. I’m on their side. I want them to stay fit.” An OSU Federal member since 1992 Jason became a member at OSU Federal while attending Oregon State University. After completing his master’s degree in exercise physiology and nutrition, he went to work for Secure Horizons (now UnitedHealthcare) in 1994. He designed and implemented their wellness program for adults entering retirement. When that program ended in 1998, he founded Fitness Over 50. From day one, Jason wanted to provide a comprehensive wellness program, combining physical fitness with social fitness, through person-to-person interaction and intellectual stimulation. From yoga to art workshops to seminars on Social Security, members stay mentally and physically engaged. This dedication to overall wellness paid off with growing demand and the need for more space. So when the time came to build a larger facility, Jason didn’t think twice about where to go for financing. “There are certain things I spend time analyzing and researching,” he recalls, “but some things are just common sense. OSU Federal was an easy decision.” A perfect partnership “OSU Federal works like I do,” Jason says. “They’re always on my side looking out for me, just like I look out for my Fitness Over 50 members.” Jason Wallis, founder and president of Fitness Over 50. “Jason has been a great business member,” says Karen Schulz, OSU Federal Business Services Loan Officer. “We helped him set up automatic payments and credit card transactions for Fitness Over 50 a few years ago. So when he came to us looking for financing to expand his business, we helped him navigate the SBA (U.S. Small Business Administration) loan process.” continued on page 2 osufederal.com spring edition 2012 Fitness Over 50 finds a partner in OSU Federal continued from page 1 “I was very impressed with OSU Federal’s ability to work with every entity throughout the process,” Jason says. “The contractor, the SBA, the accountant and more. I came to rely on OSU Federal, especially when there were permitting setbacks and additional costs. I just talked to the Business Services team and we worked it out.” Ready for anything With a brand new facility, nearly 700 members, and so many baby boomers retiring, Fitness Over 50 is poised for continued growth. “We’re ready for the future,” Jason says happily. “And I know that OSU Federal is by my side.” Get more details about OSU Federal for yourself or your business at www.osufederal.com/business. “I want people to feel like I’m their fitness partner, not just the owner,” says Jason of Fitness Over 50, an OSU Federal Business Services member. “I’m on their side. Wow – estatements create forests, jobs, habitat Do estatements help you, your credit union and your community? You bet! Here are the results of OSU Federal members who gave up paper statements, signed up for estatements and helped create two “member forests.” revenue to the county. All through its lifetime, this growing forest will provide habitat for native plants, fish and wildlife, as well as recreational opportunities such as hunting, hiking and firewood cutting. So, reforestation is a very good investment. Thank you to OSU Federal for helping the Oregon Department of Forestry meet these reforestation needs. With continuing funding cutbacks, this donation really helped to stretch my budget to get a few more trees in the ground this year.” 2,500 trees, 7 acres, Lincoln County (2012 planting) 11,000 trees, 38 acres, Benton County (2010 planting) Let’s not forget the great cooperative results when members signed up for estatements in 2009. OSU Federal donated a dollar to a tree fund for every member who signed up. The drive eliminated the printing of thousands of statements, and OSU Federal’s donation purchased more than 11,000 trees to reforest 38 acres near Hoskins in the Kings Valley area. Above, a Forestry Department team plants seedlings in 2012, paid for by an OSU Federal estatement donation, creating a seven-acre plot with 2,500 trees in Lincoln County. OSU Federal’s 2011 estatement signups led to the Oregon Department of Forestry’s West Oregon District receiving $1,646 for tree planting. The donation paid for labor and seedlings to plant seven acres of state forest land, part of the “Buck-N-Bull” timber sale in Lincoln County. 360 trees per acre were planted (about 2,500 trees) of Douglas fir, western hemlock and western red cedar, all trees native to the Oregon coast range. Before – seedling After – 24” grand fir Left, Ranelle Crosby, OSU Federal Philomath branch manager, holds a seedling during a ceremony to kick off the 2010 planting. At right, mid-way through its second growing season (July 2011), a grand fir around 24 inches tall is roughly double its original height, and is one of the original trees planted in 2010. Sign up for estatements by May 31 – plant another forest! “With quick reforestation, using good quality seedlings and routine maintenance of the site, this ground will be fully occupied with trees within 15 years,” says Evelyn Hukari, District Silviculturist with the Oregon Department of Forestry’s West Oregon District. “By age 30, these trees will be ready to be thinned and the trees taken out at that time will provide revenue back to Lincoln County. The remaining trees will continue to grow and over time will be harvested to again provide Estatements are secure, identical to paper statements and available 24/7 through online account access. Plus, for each estatement signup now through May 31, OSU Federal will donate a dollar to help plant trees in a local forest.
