M The family lived on a rented 15-acre farm in Canby and only four of the children were old enough to help around the farm. Elsie's mother worked tirelessly and never complained. One of the chores she managed twice a week was laundry for all the children and the old wringer washer she had to use would crack the buttons off the clothes she had washed. There was no money, not even to purchase food, let alone buy new buttons for all the children's long underwear. So, twice a week while the children were taking baths, she cut the buttons off the dirty long underwear and sewed then onto clean pairs! She performed this tedious task every week and never once said a word to the children. One night when Elsie's mother had put the last of the food they had on the table, she got down on her knees and prayed for help. Little did she know that Frank Cutsforth Sr. had been asking the local business people for donations for the widow with all those children. That night there was a knock at the door and she answered the door to see four Boy Scouts running down the lane. They had CUTSFORTH S THRIFTWAY left a large box. Inside the box was much-needed food and one small box tied shut. She sat down and when she opened the box her eyes filled with tears. Inside she saw buttons of all sizes, shapes and colors. Little did the dry goods storeowner know that her donation of buttons would make such an impact on this mother. This year, near Christmas time, Cutsforth's Thriftway received a call from out of the area and a request to fill a very large order and deliver it to a family in town who had fallen on hard times. The money was sent to fill the order and Marguerite Baker, who does the shopping and delivery for the homebound customers of Cutsforth's, was asked to handle this as well. To say the order was a large one is truly an understatement and Marguerite knew she couldn't handle this along with the other orders, so she came in one day just to fill this order. Baker had a list that was long and wanted to make the dollars stretch as far as possible. She shopped for the items on the list and began filling the list with the sale items. ’ There were perishables like fruit and vegetables, meat and so on, but also many food items that would last a long time on their shelves. She followed the list carefully, shopping for the best buy for each and then she came to one thing on the list that seemed insignificant. The item was a package of razors. Baker thought to herself, "There must be a man or teenage boys in the home," Marguerite said, "I just grabbed a package of razors and added to the cart I was filling and didn't give it a lot more thought." With the order filled she tried to figure out the best way to pack all of the groceries up to make the delivery easier and decided to use large orange boxes with lids. Ten huge boxes were filled and she asked Frank Cutsforth if he would like to help her deliver all of this to the family. He was happy to do so and they loaded everything up and off they went. The two of them arrived at the home and they brought the boxes inside and watched as this family opened each box. For Marguerite and Frank, the expressions of joy and delight on the faces of this family was their greatest gift. The family hurried and put the food items away and then the mother picked up the package of razors and stood there with them in her hands and just stared at them. The mother, through teary eyes, looked at Frank and Marguerite and said, "You don' t know how long it has been." With little or no money for food or necessities, there hadn't been any for luxuries like razors. The secret Santa who had made the phone call to Cutsforth's knew sometimes it is just as important to feed the spirit as it is the body. All the food items delivered and so needed had no greater impact on this family than the package of razors. This delivery brought back memories of Frank's dear mother’s experience as a child and at the Cutsforth's home this Christmas day, Frank shared the "button story" once again. " It is about caring for others and sharing and remembering things that we take for granted are sometimes the things that others cherish and are in need of. It is a reminder that all of us in our community should keep your eyes open and help our neighbor if they need help,” he said. Food — most of us think of it as a necessity, but uncommonly good food can elevate the necessary to the inspiring. W That's Quiznos. Our menu is an amazing collection of chef-inspired recipes using high-quality ingredients to create hot toasted subs, signature soups and fresh salads. More than 26 years ago we pio- QUIZNO’S SUBS neered oven-toasting. And we continue to pioneer and lead as one of the top franchises available today. Our food, our oven-toasting, our brand. We're a cut above the rest of those other fast food franchises. Prepare to be inspired. Behind the sub Back in 1981, when we weren't filling pasta and stirring sauce, our group of culinary-trained chefs created subs in the kitchen of an old Italian restaurant in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood. We had the best Italian ingredients at our fingertips: winecured Genoa salami, capicola, honey-cured ham, fresh mozzarella. Using fresh baked artisan breads, flavorful sauces and those primo meats and cheeses, we carefully crafted every sub to create the most unique flavor combinations, including the original blockbuster Classic Italian sub. In fact, in the U.S. last year alone, our franchise owners sold 17.3 million classic Italians. Once you've tried our food, you'll get it. Stop by. We are located at the Canby Square 1001 SW First Ave. Our hours are Monday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday's 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. LOOSE DENTURES? Any natural stone tile project begins with stone tile selection. Understanding the qualities of each type of stone can help you make this decision. U Personal preference is a large part of this process but, when considering budgetary concerns, remember that price is determined more by availability and supply than a particular stone's quality or durability. Granite — Like nature itself, the patterns NAGL FLOOR COVERINGS and rich tones of granite never fail to inspire awe. Granite is probably the most popular stone tile because it combines good durability and bolder colors and textures at an affordable price. Few natural stones are able to offer this kind of quality and practicality. Marble — As great as granite is, marble is still the unparalleled champion of stone texture and appearance. Many forms of marble have contrasting vein and base colors that make this stone synonymous with high-end, chic décor. Enhancing the traditional white, marble also comes in nature's most marvelous hues: emerald, smoke, chocolate, vanilla and more. Its stately look harkens back to the world's great empires and monuments, providing an air of dignity to your home. Travertine — A true design dichotomy, travertine is both sophisticated and causal, making it the failure-proof option for any style direction. Randy Schultze You may love the look and texture of natural stone, but this doesn't always mean you want your stone tile to jump out at you. Travertine is dominated by beige, neutral colors. Travertine is part of the limestone family, making it durable but also more susceptible to staining than granite or marble. Slate — Slate is a good durable natural stone, it is also extremely versatile. You can find almost any color or texturing from slate. This also makes it a great choice for accent installations. Swirling tones of copper, blue, gray, brown and other earthen hues to create an ocean of metallic shades that transcend the functional attributes of slate to create a stunning artistic statement. In your kitchen, for example, you might have a granite countertop and a slate wall tile. Come visit Nagl Floor Covering today and see all the many natural stone options. A Thomas Beck, Michelle and Kate Moore. or David Strubhar, owner of the local Padgett Business Services office, that is what attracted him to Padgett and prompted him to open his practice. F David has an extensive background in accounting, and a deep knowledge of Quickbooks financial software. After over a dozen years with the same company, he felt it was time for a change. In 2009 he began researching the opportunity to open a Padgett franchise. As a member of the National Society of Accountants and a small business owner himself, it was easy to see that with his experience and knowledge, Padgett was a perfect fit. "We work with small business owners, primarily businesses that employ less than 20 people and don't have a full time financial officer employed," said Strubhar. "We generate and analyze financial reports, offer tax consultation and preparation, payroll services, and business advice. With our comprehensive data comparison of David other businesses in the same industry we can help the business owner improve performance and profitability. Whether the business uses Quickbooks or simply keeps paper or spreadsheet records, we are able to help them analyze their financials to make good business and tax decisions throughout the year." While all of the services Padgett offers help small business owners, there is one in particular that makes the biggest difference. "We come to the business owner to pick up all data and deliver all reports. Twice a month, we are at the business location and make ourselves available to the small business owner to review financial reports and Beck made the decision to become an independent insurance agent and represents a multitude of different insurance companies. "Representing one company was, for the most part, okay, but I feel now I can better serve my clients and have more flexibility," Beck said. Once the decision was made to become independent, TJ felt he wanted to offer even more. So, he asked Michelle Moore and Kate Moore, THOMAS BECK INSURANCE partners in Columbia City Benefits Group, to join forces with him. The timing for Beck to make the move to independent status was a perfect fit for Michelle and Kate. The two corporations are housed at the same location on First Avenue here in Canby. Soon, you will find both signs hanging above the door. This joint venture gives the trio the ability to offer all lines of insurance representing several hundred companies. The two companies are licensed in both Oregon and Washington and offer all general lines of insurance and group and individual health and life insurance. If you are looking for home, auto, health, life, individual or business insurance these professionals can help and find you the best fit. The friendship between TJ, Kate and Michelle was the foundation for this venture. TJ and Kate went to high school together right here in Canby. TJ went on to college and after graduation became a licensed insurance agent and opened his business 11 years ago. Kate grew up exposed to the insurance business watching her mother Michelle build her insurance business. Michelle had long been trying to persuade her daughter to join her as a partner and Kate finally decided it was what she really wanted to do. Kate became a licensed agent and soon after joined her mother as a partner. The official ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce will be held Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. and you are invited to join in for some refreshments and tour their facilities. The Thomas Beck Agency and Columbia City Benefits Group are located at 334 NW First Ave. in Canby and can be reached by phone at 503-266-3566. PADGETT BUSINESS SERVICES answer any concerns or questions they may have. Our organization of small business finances offers peace of mind, allowing the business owner to concentrate on what they really do well-running their business," said Strubhar. Beyond financial and accounting services, Strubhar is also in a position to offer sound business advice to his clients. He is running his own business, and through keeping up with his client's monthly financials, he is in a unique position to become a trusted business consultant. For a business that needs professional accounting services but is not in a position to hire a full time employee to handle them, Padgett Business Services is the perfect solution. David is happy to be associated with a company that has a track record of more than 40 years and that has built a teamwork relationship with companies across the country. He has a simple and straight forward mission statement: "To provide premier Accounting, Payroll and Tax Services to owner operated service and retail Strubhar business with less than twenty employees in the South Metro/North Willamette Valley area." Canby and nearby communities are at the heart of that territory, but he is also happy to meet with business owners in the surrounding area, as well. Studies have identified about a dozen common organic pollutants that are two to five times higher inside your home than outside. And with prolonged exposure, these pollutants can affect your family's health. What does volatile organic compounds, or VOC's as they are commonly called, actually mean? Volatile is a substance that evaporates into the air under normal conditions. Organic is any chemical that contains carbon. Formaldehyde is a recognized carcinogen and in some instances, it can also make people more sensitive to other chemicals. Formaldehyde will also outgas for the entire life of the product, so even if your particle board cabinets are 30 years old, formaldehyde is still polluting your inside air. THELMA’S PLACE Researchers are frantically working to find a cure for age related memory loss, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. The exact cause of Alzheimer's isn't known but the hope is to find better treatment options and ways to prevent the disease entirely. Until that cure is found we can do something to either prevent or minimize the effect that memory loss has on our lives. Research indicates that by adopting a healthy lifestyle it will not only help us have a healthy brain, but it may also help lower our risk of heart disease and diabetes as well. t all began in 1974 when Gary Linton replaced longtime State Farm Insurance agent Wyman Freeby. Doing different things than you are accustomed to doing is important to generate new brain cells and keep your mind sharp. "People who choose activities that stimulate their minds throughout their lives are less likely to develop dementia, or memory loss", says Robert Wilson, a neuropsychologist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. "There's little evidence that one type of cerebral exercise is better than another. "If I was going to bet on anything, I would bet on reading," says Wilson. "The key is to pick something you enjoy doing and can sustain over a long period of time." Here are some tips: Eat wisely — Experts suggest that high cholesterol may contribute to strokes and brain cell damage. A low fat, low-cholesterol diet is advisable. There is growing evidence that a diet rich in dark vegetables and fruits such as berries, spinach, and broccoli, which contain antioxidants, may help protect brain cells. Adding salmon and tuna that are high in omega-3 fatty acids is important. Other things that are good for your heart and your brain are green tea, dark chocolate and red wine (in small amounts). Drinking plenty of water is actually food for the brain and is important so that toxins can be eliminated from your body. Stay physically active — Physical exercise helps maintain good blood flow to the brain and alters chemicals that actually help protect it. Just 30 minutes a day of aerobic exercise can help slow down memory loss and improve mental function. Researchers from Sweden found those in middle age who began exercising at least twice a week, were 60 percent less likely to develop dementia. C With the start of any new year, fitness facilities see an increase in member usage as new resolutions and desires are prioritized to reach fitness goals or just make a start to a new beginning. Seasoned veterans of Club Fit, as well as new members know that staying on track can be a difficult task as CLUB FIT daily activities can alter even the most dedicated individual. One way to help participants is to provide different options to help motivate and keep members interested and achieving fitness goals. "Keeping members motivated and entertained is our primary mission for 2010,” said Ron Raines, owner of Club Fit. “We have hired new group exercise instructors, developed new programming, and increased our athletic training to help youths achieve sports specific training. Looking at data that is consistent throughout the fitness industry, training in small or large groups will help members achieve set goals and stay consistent and form accountability." Club Fit, through partnerships with Community Education and Clackamas Community College, has started three new classes with early morning Sunrise Bootcamp, TRX suspension training, and evening Bootcamp where participants perform cardio workouts while working total body strength conditioning. The combination has increased class participation numbers and set a buzz throughout the facility. Canby School District Superintendent Jeff Rose loves the new TRX suspension training format. “I really enjoy the new TRX training where your body weight is the primary tool used against gravity to accomplish a total body workout without using heavy weight,” said Rose. “The different variety of equipment that Club Fit has to offer increases my workout options and gets my day off to a productive start." Club Fit is already planning two new classes starting this Spring with new conditioning and sports performance training for the weekend warrior. With the addition of new group exercise equipment, Club Fit programming looks to improve fitness within the Canby market. For additional information, call Club Fit for details at 503-266-6166. This is an excellent product and benefit for those individuals that qualify. Rural housing offers 100% financing opportunities to those that qualify. Rural housing loans are now easier to qualify and are financially secure options for home financing regardless of your situation. Financing advantages to using USDA'S Home Loan Programs are: 100 percent financing; no monthly mortgage insurance; low interest rates; low closing costs; zero down payment; easy credit qualifying; and never a pre-payment penalty. These loans are only offered in rural areas and serviced by direct lenders that meet federal guide lines. These are government insured 100 percent purchase loans. When the federal government agrees to guarantee a loan, lending institutions can help buyers while incurring less risk. Through the program, low and moderate income people can qualify for mortgages even without a down payment. There are other requirements as far as purchase price limitations that vary by state and county, but most of the time buyers will find these limitations to be ample. This program is available to eligible applicants in rural areas, typically defined as open country or rural towns with no more than 20,000 in population. Of course, there are other qualifications as far as income, credit history and loan-to-income ratios. The first and most important step you can take is to find a reputable lender and see if they handle USDA loans and then get pre qualified. So many of the old fluorescent lights were HOTROD DREAMWORKS in bad shape and broken and Jack found out that in about five years they would be obsolete and not even available anymore. Then he and Ruth found out there are many tax credits available to both business and residential customers if they replaced their lights with energy conservative fixtures and lights. Once they had the facts, it no longer made any sense to even try and repair their old fixtures.
