ITMA member profile Due Process: Creating Profit Centers, One Rug at a Time I t’s a simple concept—a no-brainer actually: Area rugs add incremental sales. But making it work successfully? Not so simple. For starters, there’s the substantial, up-front capital investment. Then there’s inventory exposure, plus the challenge of developing designs that sell through at retail. With these complexities, it’s easy to see why increasing numbers of retailers and manufacturers are flocking to Due Process Stable Trading Company. “Our customers have realized having Due Process as a partner simply makes good business sense,” explains David Grasse, Partner. “If you’re a Showtime attendee selling furniture, why not have a rug underneath? It doesn’t take up any additional room. And if you’re a jobber, there’s no investment required other than your samples.” In either case, Showtime buyers are creating instant profit centers by partnering with Due Process, which houses its area rug inventory at its new 92,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in Lumberton, NC. The brilliance of Due Process’ business model speaks for itself: Programmed and custom collections offering hundreds of patterns, sizes, and colors at multiple price points, all of which are backed by the financial strength and stability of its three partners. “Frankly, it requires a lot of capital to do this right, and we have that financial stability,” Grasse says. Add to this 24/7 online stock visibility, quickand-easy QR code replenishment, and direct drop shipments to the consumer’s doorstep, and it’s no surprise Due Process’ customers are repeatedly realizing success in the area rug category. “We’re different from many of our competitors because we approach rugs as a fashion industry,” Grasse states. “We build our collections around color, texture, and design.” The success of Due Process’ Wesley Mancini Rug Collection is proof of its prowess in this area. Grasse sums it up this way: “We really try to be the silent force behind our customers.” due process At A Glance Location: Edison, NJ Products: Hand-woven, tufted, and loomed rugs from India, Pakistan, Nepal, and China Collections: 600+ in multiple sizes and colorways Customers: Specialty & chain retailers, furniture manufacturers, jobbers Contact: dpstc.com, or 732.225.8380, x316 MS 211-216 For more information, visit dpstc.com, or 732.225.8380, x316. www.Showtime-Market.com 5 ITMA member profile Noveltex: A Labor of Linen F or Noveltex, Inc., business boils down to a few simple principles: Provide the finest quality linen, offer the broadest possible selection, and maintain an unwavering commitment to customer service and cooperation while being environmentally responsible. “Our main advantage is our complete control of quality at the time of production,” explains Benjamin Golshani, President of the Los Angeles-based firm. “We inspect and manage every aspect of the process, so that in the end we bring only the highest-quality linen back to the U.S. for dyeing and printing while meeting or exceeding environmental standards.” The end result of this principled approach is a line of high quality linen fabrics known for their incredible hand, which is called Refinaré, including 400+ patterns in multiple colorways and more than 200 solid fabrics— all available in different weights for residential and commercial applications. Golshani traveled throughout Europe visiting count- 6 ITMA Showtime June 2014 less suppliers before finding the right fit in Belgium-based and other European fiber suppliers that met his exacting standards. Today, Noveltex partners with various partner mills to weave the fiber into linen, which is then shipped to Noveltex’s Los Angeles headquarters, where it is dyed and finished. “Every season we develop new designs and colors, so our line is always fresh,” Golshani explains. “Of course we maintain classic colors and patterns we know our customers have success with, but we’re always reaching to provide something new.” Noveltex is well known for its responsive and timely service to customers. “The great thing about us is that we keep everything in stock, so we generally ship within a few days,” states Golshani, summing it up this way: “Our goal is to provide the broadest possible selection of the finest linens for our customers, and to provide the best service along the way.” For more information, visit Noveltex. org or call 213.745.9999. And as purveyors of fine decorative trimmings from around the globe, few do it better than Classical Elements. “We started Classical Elements because we wanted to bring a higher level of design, creativity, and service to the industry,” explains Leyla Gans, who co-founded the company with Stuart Gans in 2004. “We founded Classical Elements on principles such as listen and learn from your customers and never stop innovating and brining new ideas to the table.” Since that time, the duo have surrounded themselves with a team comprised of some of the most talented and customerfocused designers, salespeople, suppliers, and customer service reps in the industry. New for June Showtime is an expansion of its highly popular Coastal Living collection, which marries the earthy texture of jute with cotton and nautical navy blue. “We’ve had a lot of requests for this—it’s been very successful,” Leyla states. “It presents a refined, beachy look reminiscent of The Hamptons, yet it’s still quite casual.” Classical Elements is also launching a volume in fresh, new colors for its well-received Lux collection. “Think yummy, fuzzy brushed fringe made with chenilles and other soft yarns,” says Leyla. Finally, an expanded collection of frogs in distinct and different casual, metallic, and solid designs will be on display. “We’ll have so much more that’s new and fabulous in June, but what’s just as important is the service and quality behind our product,” Leyla says in summary. “We take pride in the impeccable workmanship of our supplier partners, our commitment to responsive customer service, and our promise of the efficient delivery times.” Classical Elements At A Glance Location: Morrisville, NC Products: Trimmings, tassels, and decorative drapery hardware Customers: Furniture manufacturers, retailers, jobbers Contact: Classicalelements.com, or 919.234.8025 SMS 1-536 For more information, visit Classicalelements.com, or 919.234.8025. www.Showtime-Market.com 9 SuburbanHome Fabrics ® A Duralee Company ® Market Square Tower, 317 West High Street, 6th Floor, High Point, NC 27260 Toll Free: 877-782-7479 - www.Duralee.com T to B-Deira in Marine, Kensho in Aqua, Taku in Aqua-Green, Soto in Aqua & Market in Marine 10 ITMA Showtime June 2014 ITMA member profile Suburban Home: Telling the Story of Home I t’s a story we’re all close to—the story of home. And it’s a story that the fabric line of Suburban Home imparts exquisitely and deliciously each season. “Our proprietary line of coordinated wovens and prints give retailers and manufacturers a clean, fresh, fun aesthetic at an attainable price point,” explains Thomas Siblo, Vice President of Suburban Home Sales. “We also have a proud family-owned company history—one that from the beginning was built on core values such as value-driven ingenuity, cutting-edge products, and personalized customer service.” All of Suburban Home’s fabrics are designed by its in-house team of talented designers, and have included highly successful collaborations. Besides its warehouse and factory locations in New York, Suburban Home reaches out to customers through a robust network of 123 corporate, agent, and international showrooms. The company boasts one of the highest in-stock rates for cut yardage at 90%, which means it typically ships orders within 24 hours. New for June Showtime is the Cultured Home collection, an exciting package of prints and wovens that work harmoniously together for a well-coordinated look. “The two themes in this collection are Zen and Spice Market,” states Denise Gutierrez, Designer. “Our working motto throughout the creation of this line was, ‘Let the destination be inspired by the journey,’ where the destination was home and the journey was our collection of fabrics along the way.” Cultured Home offers two books totaling 89 SKUs in 100% cotton as well as cotton/linen blends. Zen consists of four prints and four wovens in multiple colorways, and includes show stoppers such as Sanbo, a woven shibori medallion, and Kensho, a fine-lined chrysanthemum matelassé. This competitive distinction has been especially true with respect to Fabricut’s growing list of licensed collections, which it unveils exclusively at Showtime. Launched in December, and with new designs in June, is the Isabelle de Borchgrave Collection, inspired by the world-renowned Belgian artist and sculptor. “We’ve taken her breathtaking paper costumes and art and reinterpreted them to create a line with a colorful, ethnic feel,” explains Hammond. “But where many ethnic-inspired textiles are more rustic, Isabelle’s have an elegant, sophisticated feel.” Also debuting in June is the George Washington Mount Vernon Collection, an embroidery-inspired line based on the historical archives of Mount Vernon. “We scoured through archives and walked the grounds, taking our inspiration from historic belongings, clothing, architecture, and nature, and re-envisioned them with today’s aesthetic,” Hammond remarks. Adding to these middle-market collections is a new license with interior designer Vern Yip, well known for his roles on TLC’s Trading Spaces and HGTV’s Design Star. The Vern Yip Collection will be marketed under Fabricut’s value brand Trend, which has already witnessed tremendous success with the Jaclyn Smith Home Collection. “We’ll be showing a small preview from the new Vern Yip Collection, and will unveil the full line in the fall,” states Hammond. Durable. Sustainable. Anti-microbial. UV resistant. Bleach cleanable. And 100% American made. Bella-Dura® has been delivering on its tagline “Performance by Design” since 2005 with its revolutionary fabric, which offers inherent attributes that make it a leader in indoor and outdoor applications. “Our fiber technology sets us apart,” explains Susan Lobel, Vice President of Marketing & Brand Development. “There is nothing applied to the fabric to make it perform well—it’s inherent in the proprietary yarns.” Bella-Dura is solution dyed, meaning the color is integrated into the fiber, making it highly resistant to fading. Beyond this, Bella-Dura offers abrasion resistance exceeding 50,000 double rubs, and UV resistance of 1,500 lightfast hours. Bella-Dura has also received numerous industry acknowledgements, including C2C Silver certification, and the C2C Products Innovation Institute’s Legacy Leader honor. But toughness doesn’t come at the expense of beauty—and Bella-Dura is uncommonly beautiful. “Customers always tell us they love 14 ITMA Showtime June 2014 our color stories,” remarks Sarah Keelen, Senior Stylist. “Because we are a design studio, we’re continually sourcing for inspiration, whether it’s visiting museums, or touring showrooms and markets. We develop collections that are fully merchandised, so patterns, stripes, and solids coordinate effortlessly. For customers looking to put together a collection, the legwork is already done. This is especially helpful for customers that don’t have a large design team.” Launching in June is the By the Yard Collection—the latest offering in an existing program that provides shipping within 24 hours for orders less than 50 yards, and delivery within four weeks for larger orders. Bella-Dura By the Yard is comprised of three categories: Naturally By the Yard, earthy neutrals with patterns and textures inspired by menswear looks; Colorfully By the Yard, a grouping of bright, saturated patterns; and Solids and Textures By the Yard, the all-important anchor of abounding color choice in multiple textures. We always turn to Mae West for a delicious quote. Our current favorite, “I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.” Favorite resources for design ideas? Vintage and contemporary design books. We cannot get enough of a fantastic coffee table book on the likes of Nancy Lancaster or Nicky Haslam. Dream project or collaboration? We are launching a bedding and window treatment collection on HSN, and that is pretty much a dream come true. Terrific product at a great price point, and then we get to teach the consumer how to use the product to create magical moments in their home. Good design should be a dialogue, and HSN gives us a mass platform. Currently reading? Or last book read? John is reading a biography of the Duchess of Windsor, and Jason is working his way through various books by the Mitford sisters. Jason also keeps a copy of The World of Interiors magazine by his bedside for inspiration by osmosis. Words that describe you and your approach to design? Fun. Frisky. Fabulous. Most proud of? Remaining humble and always thankful. Lunch with anyone...who would it be? Elsie de Wolfe. Or Pippi Longstocking. Or both. That would be simply heaven. We would discuss trellis, Versailles, and Mr. Nilsson, the monkey, over gin and dover sole. We’ve always wanted to... Visit Morocco. Have a fabric line that is sold at Calico Corners or Jo-Ann Fabrics. If you were a type of fabric? John would be a Colefax & Fowler chintz with a Chinoiserie pattern paired with trellis and fretwork. Jason would be a vaguely Beverly Hills Hotel-inspired palm pattern that just might have monkeys throwing bananas at each other in the background. style makers Jennifer McConnell Industry people you admire? I adore the people in this industry. So many friends for life have been created through what I do. You would think there would be many big egos and attitudes, but that’s not the case. Most are here because they truly love what they do. Trends you love? I try not to follow trends—I would rather create something with personality that doesn’t look like everything else! Trends you could have done without? The white Mongolian lamb-covered chair and ottoman phase that has been popular! How do you clean that? Why would you want your furniture to shed? If you crave one of those get a big white dog like mine! Do-over dream career? I always told everyone growing up I would be a zookeeper. If I had to pick a new career and do it all over I would be a vet at a wildlife preserve in Africa. Or a shoe designer. Life has taught me... Be humble, be grateful, be thankful. Jennifer McConnell is the Vice President of Design at Pearson Furniture, where she serves as the visionary lead in all things creative—from products, to merchandising, to showroom design. She literally scours the globe for her inspiration, finding some of the most unique textiles to pair with Pearson’s handcrafted frames, in the end transforming the everyday into something exceptional. As an admired master of her craft, Jennifer’s work recently graced the pages of Traditional Home, which showcased her guest suite design in the Hamptons Designer Showhouse. What our industry needs most? Interest from the younger generation. Upholsterers, woodworkers, and seamstresses in our industry are truly artists and should be recognized as such. We need to seek out younger artisans, and help mentor them so these skills are not lost. A feature film is being produced about your life. Who plays you? A cross between Doris Day in “Pillow Talk” and Cameron Diaz from “Something about Mary.” If you were a type of fabric? I would be an over-the-top brightly colored coral/ cachepot/chinoiserie print from Clarence House. They don’t fit into every interior, but when they do they make a statement and are the star of the room! www.Showtime-Market.com 23 24 ITMA Showtime June 2014 ALGEMENE BELGIUM World-renowned workmanship in multi-colored warp jacquard tapestries and chenilles, mohair and other magnificent velvets. PENELOPE TURKEY Over half a century of weaving expertise that produces gorgeous colorations and unique finishes, as well as providing outstanding dedication and service. TRAPO PORTUGAL A totally vertical mill, 100% cotton, spinning, dyeing, designing, and weaving all under one roof. Specialized finishing techniques impart our ”silky hand.” VILBER SPAIN Unlimited print works for home furnishings. Special out-door collection with100% acrylic fibers. And a full range of sheers. www.Showtime-Market.com 25 style makers Sarah Keelen Favorite resources for design ideas? Good old-fashioned magazines. I love flipping through magazines, tearing out pages, and pinning them up until they inspire a new idea. Industry people you admire? My former coworker and friend Heidi Blackwood-Batteau and Christian Batteau left the hectic lifestyle of NYC a few years ago, bought a farm in Arkansas, and moved their hand-painted wallpaper studio there—Callidus Guild. It’s inspiring. And you’d never expect the wallpaper hanging in Tiffany & Co. was made in rural Arkansas. Favorite city? My home, Brooklyn! As much as I love to travel, coming home to Brooklyn is the best. Nobody gets “stuck” in Brooklyn. People want to be here because it is vibrant, beautiful, and interesting. Words that describe you? Calm, practical, creative, and (I hope) funny. Do-over dream career? I love nature, so I’d be a park ranger or do environmental studies. Lunch with anyone? Mindy Kaling—she is an intelligent, hilarious, and stylish woman who stays true to herself. Sarah Keelen is the Senior Stylist for Bella-Dura®. She joined the parent company, Wearbest Sil-Tex Mills, in 2005 when Bella-Dura was introduced and has since designed dozens of collections with Life has taught me… When one door closes another one opens. Also in the jar are faded, disintegrated pieces of traditional upholstery fabric, a striking visual illustrating of one of the key differences between Sunbrella and traditional, non-performance textiles. “We doubt there is any other fabric on a furniture retailer’s floor that is as fade resistant and comfortable as Sunbrella,” Rosendale suggests. In fact, the amazingly soft hand of Sunbrella remains a feature customers are still surprised by. “It’s as luxuriously soft as any non-performance cotton, linen, silk, or chenille—and every bit as beautiful.” “Sunbrella is the perfect fabric for home furnishings, because it addresses so many consumer concerns,” Rosendale says. “Drinks spilled on Sunbrella clean up easily with soap and water, and bleach can be used if 28 ITMA Showtime June 2014 necessary without damaging the fabric. Plus, upholstered furniture can sit in direct sunlight, because fading is a non-issue.” Sunbrella offers high colorfastness because every fiber is saturated with highly UV-stable pigments. And Sunbrella fabrics are GreenGuard® certified for indoor air quality. SUNBRELLA At A Glance Beyond this, Rosendale is quick to point out that it’s not simply the fabric that’s important. “We’re selling our people, technology, and history,” he says, adding that parent company Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, LLC brings a rich heritage in technical standards. And so as he canoed through stretches of the mighty Amazon, Apodaca drew with pastels, ink, and charcoal, artistically documenting the essence of the region. These works were then transformed into Modra’s first fabric collection, aptly named, Amazon. “Our creative process and aesthetic is all about bringing the majestic elements of nature into the home,” says Apodaca. “As artists we really want to bring art into interior spaces in a multi-dimensional way,” adds Co-Founder and Creative Director Tamalyn Shea. “Fabrics create a mood and impression within the first couple of seconds, and intricacies and details really matter in order to tell a larger story.” Both Apodaca and Shea bring to Modra extensive and diverse artistic backgrounds. Apodaca, who studied printmaking and figure painting at Florence, Italy’s Studio Art Centers International, is a sculptor, film director, and composer whose work has been created and exhibited internationally. Shea earned a bachelor’s degree in design from UCLA, and, after a successful career in advertising print production, set her sights on merging textiles with her creative studio. “Even though our patterns are complex, they are very diverse in application,” Shea remarks. “They can breath freshness and life in traditional room settings, and conversely they can add warmth and depth to clean, contemporary designs.” Apodaca echoes her sentiments about divergence and variety, summing it up this way: “Things can be both simple and complex simultaneously, and it’s these layers that tell stories, add emotion, and create a sense of curiosity. That’s what we want to do with Modra’s fabrics.” MODRA At A Glance Location: San Diego Products: Velvet, linen, cotton satin, wool twill Founded: 2012 Designs: 16 patterns in multiple colorways Contact: Modradesign.com, or 619.316.2067 SMS 1-819 For more information, visit Modradesign.com, or 619.316.2067. www.Showtime-Market.com 33 BOOTH: #SMS 1-832 Visit to view our entire collection of new designer home dec fabrics, including fun juvenile and classic prints! Veterans typically have shopping plans made in advance, but if you’re new to Showtime consider these tips: • Schedule appointments whenever possible, especially for companies at the Market Square Textile Tower, Resource Center, and Fabric Center, where schedules fill up quickly. • If you don’t have appointments, the Suites at Market Square is a good starting point. • Shop one venue at a time—wandering is tempting but it’s a selfindulgence you can’t afford. • Schedule your time logically to avoid making multiple trips between buildings. SHOWTIME’S MAIN VENUES Suites at Market Square “SMS” or “the suites” The suites house well-established, smaller, and international suppliers. It’s also the location for educational seminars, special exhibits, food, and social events. Things are less formal in the Suites, so look at your leisure. Appointments aren’t required. 46 ITMA Showtime June 2014 Market Square Textile Tower “MSTT” or “the tower” An easy walk from the Suites through Market Square takes you to the elevators for the tower, home to many of the larger mills and suppliers of leather and trim. Showtime appointments are common in the tower, but walk-ins sometimes can be accommodated. Be flexible if you don’t have an appointment. Resource Center and Fabric Center “Wrenn” and “Hamilton” These outlying buildings are located just a few blocks away on Wrenn and Hamilton Streets, and house a range of suppliers. Many of them encourage appointments but welcome drop-in visitors, too. Once you’ve taken the free shuttle ride to the buildings, it’s easy to walk between the Resource Center and Fabric Center.
