T he sending of greeting cards at Christmas
began in the Victorian era. Although wood
engravers produced prints with religious
themes in the European Middle Ages, the first
commercial Christmas and New Year's card is
believed to have been designed and printed in
London, England in 1843.

Candy canes have been around for about 350 years.
They were straight, white pieces of candy until
the late seventeenth century when a choirmaster
in Germany shaped the sugar sticks to resemble
shepherd's staffs. He gave them to the children at
Christmas services to help keep them quiet.
The first record of candy canes in the United States
was of those hanging on a Christmas tree in 1847.
It wasn't until about 1900 that the red stripes and
mint flavors were added.

easily put them with a gingerbread house and/or a witch. We see interesting

The Salvation Army popularized the donut in the United States after
providing WWI soldiers with the treat of dough that they could fry in
their helmets in the front lines. The returning "dough boys" brought the
donut back from Europe with them.
Each year the first Friday in June commemorates the donut's story as the
Salvation Army partners with donut shops nationwide. Check your area
for a participating location and help the Salvation Army continue to serve
nearly 70 million meals each year.

Holiday Baking
So many families express to us that one of their favorite Christmas
traditions is not only baking but, more importantly, eating cookies
whose recipes have been handed down for generations. We had
to include grandma with this grouping because so often, she is
at the helm of this endeavor.

Soup and cupcakes are two of our favorite things to cook and eat. Byers' Choice employees
have Soup Days in winter when those who choose to make pots of their favorite recipe bring
in crocks of soup to share with each other. We will include some of these recipes on our
Facebook page and in an upcoming Traditions magazine.
As you know, cupcakes are becoming very popular. There are even bakeries that only sell
cupcakes. And there are also trucks, similar to ice cream trucks, driving through neighborhoods
selling their special treats. Our Chef with Cupcake figure would make a great birthday gift!

Clement C. Moore, 1823
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Another name for umbrella is bumbershoot. The first known use of the word
bumbershoot was circa 1896. Umbrellas, parasols, etc. have been used for about
4,000 years. Pictures and sculptures from ancient Egypt depict umbrellas which
were used for shade.
In 1830, James Smith and Sons opened the first umbrella shop in London.
This beautiful old shop is still operating today on New Oxford Street where
handsome, quality umbrellas are still handcrafted today.

How Sweet It Is
We've found no proof that a costermonger actually walked the streets crying, "Candy canes,
candy canes, please buy my beautiful delicious candy canes." But, why not? More likely, they
were sold at sweet shops and the Caroler® pictured below has just bought lots of them as part
of his Christmas celebration.

Yes, Virginia
"Is there a Santa Claus?" was
the title of an editorial appearing
in the September 21, 1897
edition of the New York Sun.
The editorial, which included
the famous reply "Yes, Virginia,
there is a Santa Claus," has
become an indelible part of
popular Christmas folklore in
the United States and Canada.
#429
In 1647, Cromwell and the Puritans came to power and
forbid the singing of Christmas carols. Many carols were
lost or forgotten until Victorian times when an effort
was made to restore this tradition. Official carol singers
could be hired and would charge to come stand outside
someone’s home and sing carols on Christmas Eve.
The carols were also printed and sold on street corners.
Fortunately, the Christmas tradition of caroling, which
dates back thousands of years, was saved.

In 1897 Dr. Philip OʼHanlon,
from Manhattan's Upper West
Side, was asked by his then
eight-year-old daughter, Virginia
(1889–1971), whether Santa
Claus really existed. Virginia
O'Hanlon had begun to doubt
there was a Santa Claus, because her friends had told her
that he did not exist.
Dr. OʼHanlon suggested she
write to the New York Sun,
a prominent New York City
newspaper at the time, assuring
her that "If you see it in The
Sun, it's so." While he may have
been passing the buck, he
unwittingly gave one of the
paper's editors, Francis Pharcellus Church, an opportunity to
rise above the simple question,
and address the philosophical
issues behind it.
Although the paper ran the
editorial in the seventh place on
the editorial page, its message
was very moving to many
people who read it. More than a
century later it remains the most
reprinted editorial ever to run in
any newspaper in the English
language.

Nutcrackers are believed to have originated in the Erzgebirge region of Germany about 300 years ago. An artisan
carved a wooden soldier with a movable
mouth to symbolically crack the "hard
nut" of the economic times. The figure
quickly became popular throughout the
region, Germany and the world.

Grandfather clocks and cuckoo clocks
have been around for centuries. The
mechanism to produce the cuckoo call
was installed in almost every kind of
cuckoo clock since the middle of the
eighteenth century and has remained almost without variation until the present.
