President’s Message
For more than 125 years, Muskoka’s natural
beauty has attracted artists, first as a destination
for landscape painters who sketched the rugged
wilderness of the region, and later as a place
where artists of all kinds could live, work and
play. Today, Muskoka is home to hundreds
and hundreds of talented artists whose small
businesses are part of the creative rural economy.
Whether in towns and villages or down
picturesque winding country roads, artists’
studios abound in Muskoka. This, our 8th annual
guidebook, will help you to discover a wealth of
talent and a creative variety of outstanding art
that’s made in Muskoka.
Muskoka Arts & Crafts thanks the businesses,
studio tours, art events and organizations who
help to make this guidebook possible with their
advertisements.
We hope you enjoy meeting our artists, seeing
their art and taking pleasure in experiencing their
inspiration – Muskoka.

Muskoka Arts & Crafts
Who We Are
Muskoka Arts & Crafts Inc. is the true heart of the visual arts in Ontario’s Cottage Country. For fifty-four
years, our not-for-profit organization has brought people together with artists and their art.
The seeds for Muskoka Arts & Crafts were sown in 1963 when Betty Reid, the librarian for the Bracebridge
Public Library, asked a question in her newspaper column: “What would you think of having an arts and
crafts sale during the summer when visitors are looking for something to take home to remind them of their
holiday?” Fifty-four years later, more than 20,000 people visit the Summer Show on the third weekend in
July to meet 200 artists from Muskoka and across the country.
In the mid 1960s, Muskoka Arts & Crafts began organizing workshops in a variety of subjects, and on a cold
February evening in 1968, it held the community’s first life drawing workshop at the high school. When the
heating went out, the artists bundled up in coats, hats and gloves and drew a shivering model.
Other shows were added to the organization’s repertoire. The Spring Members’ Show was launched in 1977,
and the first Christmas Show & Sale was held three years later. In the fall of 1989, Muskoka Arts & Crafts
established the award-winning Chapel Gallery, Muskoka’s first not-for-profit art gallery that displays work by
local and Canadian artists. The gallery also serves as the organization’s headquarters and a place to hold
meetings, lectures and workshops as well as to display its permanent collection of art from Muskoka. Muskoka Arts & Crafts supports the next generation of artists by sponsoring the Elene J. Freer Art Scholarship that
provides up to four years of financial support for a graduating high school student from Muskoka who is pursuing a
post-secondary education in the visual arts. Since 1988, thirty-two students have benefited from this support.
Other plaudits include establishing Muskoka as a designated arts community, participating in shows as
far away as Toronto and helping new and returning artists to the area discover their true talent through
workshops, shows and promotional opportunities.
Muskoka Arts & Crafts is an innovative and creative organization. Membership is open to anyone who
lives, works or owns property in Muskoka. Memberships are available at the Chapel Gallery, by download
at www.muskokaartsandcrafts.com or by calling 705-645-5501.
The office for Muskoka Arts & Crafts is housed at the Chapel Gallery, located next to Woodchester Villa,
15 King Street in Bracebridge. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm.

FIBRE ARTS
Diane Ayles, Hooked Wool Fibre Art
“With an inherent base in art, I’ve been enchanted by the complexity and potential of rug hooking
and its place as a fine art,” says Diane Ayles, an international award-winning artist. Her appreciation
for nature and its colours is the result of an intricate hooking process blending colours and woollen
fibres in a variety of textures on linen. Her compositions expressed in ways that make a contemporary
statement and captivating form of visual expression, showcase a new fine art medium from an ancient
home spun craft. Diane has been recognized for her contributions to the advancement of rug hooking
through her work. This spring, her pieces were featured at the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild 50th
Annual Hooked Rug Show held at Deerhurst in Huntsville.

The Algonquin Art Centre ~ A New
Vision of Art in Algonquin Park
Algonquin Park is well known for its outdoor recreation
and its research initiatives, but few realize how
important the Park has been for the Canadian arts. Its
beautiful landscapes have inspired some of the nation’s
most famous paintings, such as Tom Thomson’s “The
Jack Pine” or A.Y. Jackson’s “Red Maple”, and the
Park continues to attract painters, writers, filmmakers,
and performance artists who travel to Algonquin to
experience its inspiring qualities for themselves.
The Algonquin Art Centre was established to celebrate
and foster the ongoing tradition of art in Algonquin Park.
Located in the heart of the Park, the Centre showcases
the newest artworks and creative projects from
Algonquin-inspired artists. Its gallery space features
original paintings and sculpture from Canada’s top
landscape and wildlife artists, including Robert Bateman,
Michael Dumas, Patricia Pepin and many more.
In July and August, the Centre also offers daily art
activities and classes for participants of all ages and
skill levels. Please call us or check our website for
information.
In addition to these onsite activities, there’s a lot more
going on Park-wide, as Manager Joel Irwin explains,
“It’s a very exciting time for art in the Park, building on
the success of last year’s projects, including artist in
residence programs, theatre in the Park, and wildernessthemed film, we’re announcing a new slate of exciting
art initiatives for 2016. We hope you can swing by the
Centre to see the beautiful works and learn more about
our vision for art in the Park.”

Over the years, I have studied at Sheridan College, the Dundas School of Art, Loyalist College and
The Haliburton School of the Arts. I strive for drama and movement in my paintings, with a huge
dose of colour. I prefer the “up close and personal” approach with the palette knife for acrylics and
oils to create an energetic, raw and more organic feel. In addition, I love the transparent nature of
watercolour for its more ethereal nature.

Susan Irons Ware ~ Damselfly Studio
Susan’s work is inspired by nature. While some of her work remains true to the subject matter in a
realistic way, other work uses nature as a point of divergence to create more abstracted views of natural
subjects. The invitation is to look more closely at what is often assumed, or otherwise missed. Susan
works in watercolour, acrylic, oil and mixed media. A degree in Fine Arts and 25 years teaching art with
the Toronto District School Board have laid a strong foundation for her art.

Wendie Donabie
Working in her studio near Bracebridge Falls, Wendie produces paintings in acrylic, oil, watercolour
and Chinese ink. The natural beauty of Muskoka inspires her while her emotional response to a place
or subject motivates her. She describes her creative process as magical, as if the paint draws forth
images hidden in the fibres of the canvas or paper. Her realistic-impressions entice the viewer to
enter in and experience the subject in his or her own unique way. Wendie sees her paintings as a way
to tell a story and bring awareness of our interdependence on the fragile, natural world around us.

Located in a beautiful setting overlooking the Muskoka River and downtown
Bracebridge, the Chapel Gallery has been the venue for exhibitions by a variety of local
talent and noteworthy Canadian artists such as Denis Geden, Mendelson Joe, as well as
the late Doris McCarthy, John Gould and Michael Robinson.
The Chapel Gallery is also the setting for an array of lectures and workshops offered to
the organization’s members and the public alike.
Housed at the Chapel Gallery is Muskoka Arts & Crafts’ Permanent Collection. Established
in 1985, the collection represents those works of art which document and represent the
artistic excellence of Muskoka Arts & Crafts and the diversity of its members.
Welcoming visitors to the Chapel Gallery is a magnificent life-size sculpture of a muskox
created by Gravenhurst artist, Hilary Clark Cole, AOCAD.
Muskoka Arts & Crafts acknowledges the
support of the Town of Bracebridge through
the rental of the building that houses the
Chapel Gallery.
The Chapel Gallery has received multiple awards as the best gallery in Muskoka by the
readers of the The Muskokan, the Bracebridge Examiner and the Gravenhurst Banner. It
is a must-see for visitors interested in the arts in Muskoka.
