Vesterdalen Lodge No. 2-131 • Sons of Norway • Auburn/Kent, WA • Chartered October 23, 1983
Hilsen Fra Presidenten
What a busy month is May! We began with planning on May 2 and finished in a grand manner with our Nordic
Fest on May 28. Our general meeting on
the 16th was highlighted with a beautiful Memorial Program and saying “Takk
for alt” (thanks for everything). We
gain so much from our fellowship here
at Vesterdalen and are saddened by the
loss of 15 members since last May. We
thank Dianne Snell for planning our
Memorial Service and her reading of the
poem As We Remember Them. Thanks
also to John Fatland for his part in the
arrangements, Nils Ladderud for his solo Nidelven, and Rev.
Eric Woolridge for his prayer. The hors d’oeurves potluck was
wonderful and we appreciated the attendance of so many family
members for the Memorial Service.
Syttente Mai in Ballard was fantastic and renting the van to
share was a wonderful idea. Vesterdalen members wish to thank
John Fatland and John Nyseth for researching and arranging
for the van and extra thanks to John Fatland for his superb
driving. Mr. Fatland has a future waiting for him as a chauffeur!
We also thank my cousin Magne Erga for parking arrangements
for the van just a block off the parade route. The convenience
of the van enabled us to travel together to the Nordic Heritage
Museum for lunch and tour the exhibits, as well as Leif Erikson Lodge for coffee and cake, and we enjoyed music at Bergen
Place. Sharing the ride, the experiences in Ballard, and the parade are so much more fun and interesting when done together!
What a crowd! Everyone was so friendly. We visited with many
people about their bunads and costumes. I learned that the
white piping on the back of my costume distinguishes it as a
Rogaland costume. We met many Norwegians who were visiting
and enjoying Norway’s National Holiday in Ballard. The weather
was just about perfect! I hope you have a chance to visit the
Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard. They have added so many
displays since I was last there! We are a nation of immigrants
that are blessed to live in a country where we can celebrate our
heritage freely!
I thank Vesterdalen for the opportunity to attend the District Convention in Coeur d’ Alene June 1-4 and will be reporting back to you.
I hope you have fun in the summer months ahead enjoying
a campfire (just like in Norway on June 21) with friends and
family, or walking in the woods, fields of wildflowers, or along
the seashore. Be sure to check the calendar about the parade in
Enumclaw and other future events like the picnic in July.

Local Author’s Books
for Sale
Astrid Karlsen Scott is an author who
lived in Olympia and worked with Vesterdalen
Lodge for many years past at different festivals up and down the west coast. She wrote
many wonderful books--children’s, cookbooks,
and historical. One of her books, Defiant Courage, is a true story of Norway’s longest WWII
escape and is now being filmed in Norway - planning to be out
in the fall of 2017. She has now “retired” to Utah and is offering
her books at a reduced price. You can find info and pricing at
www.nordicadventures.com. Some inventory is in Olympia. Contact Joanne Gray at joanne@moholtusa.com or 360-923-1242
to see what inventory she has available. If she does not have
what you are looking for, then ordering them on the web is very
easy. Happy reading!!

Edvard
Munch
and the Sea
We in the Pacific
Northwest have a wonderful opportunity. TAM
(Tacoma Art Museum) has
organized a very special
exhibition featuring Edvard Munch, Norway’s most
famous artist. “Edvard
Munch and the Sea” will
be on view through July
17. This is a rare chance
for us to see so many of
Munch’s works in our area.
TAM is the only museum to
feature this unique exhibition. Their curator, Margaret Bullock will be making a special
presentation about the exhibit at our June 20 meeting. TAM is
located at 1701 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma. Their phone # is 253272-4258.
Here is your chance to hear some beautiful Norwegian music on Thursday, October 6 at the Kent Senior Center. Tell your
friends to save the date for some great Norwegian fun!

Social Directors’ Report
At the Last Meeting
The May meeting was well attended with 58 members and 29
guests present. The program consisted of a very special memorial service arranged by Dianne Snell that honored the fifteen
Vesterdalen Lodge members that died in 2015. During the social
hour preceding the service, members and guests enjoyed a vast
assortment of hors d’oeuvres. Many thanks to everyone who
brought appetizer treats to help make this potluck a success.
The $10.00 cash awards went to Sally Nesheim and Margaret Evenson. The raffle prizes were won by Don Jensen, Florence Amundsen and Karl Klevjer.
Upcoming Meetings
June and strawberries are a great match. So, look forward
to a strawberry dessert served during the 6:00 social hour at the
next meeting.
On July 18, the annual picnic will be held at the Auburn
Game Farm Park pavilion located at 3030 R Street SE. There
will be no regular meetings in July and August. The lodge will
furnish beverages, fried chicken and baked beans. Lodge members are asked to bring salads, sides, desserts and rolls to share.
Also, please bring your own table service. Dinner will be served
at 6:00. Any help is welcome for set-up, serving and clean-up.
We are hoping for a good turnout of adults and children for this
fun event.
