North American ticket revenue for 2011 is projected to be about $10.1 billion, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box-office data. That is only a 4.5 percent falloff from 2010. But studio executives are alarmed by the downturn nonetheless, in part because the real picture is worse than the raw revenue numbers suggest. Revenue, for instance, has been propped up by a glut of 3-D films, which cost $3 to $5 more per ticket. Studios made 40 pictures in 3-D in the last 12 months, up from 24 last year, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, a movie database. Theatres have also continued to increase prices for standard tickets; moviegoers now pay an average of $7.89 each, up 1 percent over last year. Attendance for 2011 is expected to drop 5.3 percent, to 1.27 billion, continuing a slide. Attendance declined 6 percent in 2010. Hopes that a group of major releases would supercharge the Christmas box office fizzled. Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was a solid number one, taking in $26.5 million in its second weekend for a total of about $60 million. But Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was a softerthan-expected second, with $17.8 million in ticket sales, lifting its two-week total to $76.6 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked continued to struggle in third place, taking in about $13 million for a twoweek total of $50.3 million. Three heavily promoted new entries had tepid results. What has gone wrong? Plenty, say studio distribution executives, who point to competition for leisure dollars, particularly among financially pressed young people (the movie industry’s most coveted demographic); too many family movies; and the continued erosion of star power. One more thing: “You have to go back and look at the content,” said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Brothers. “Good movies always rise to the occasion. Bad ones, not so much.” Young people, defined by studios as teenagers and people in their 20s, certainly helped power some of the biggest movies of 2011, including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the year’s number one release with $381 million in domestic ticket sales. Transformers: Dark of the Moon was second with more than $352 million, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 was third with more than $269 million. But a spate of smaller movies aimed at younger audiences bombed, including Prom, Glee: The 3-D Concert Movie, Sucker Punch, Conan the Barbarian and Your Highness. The horror genre struggled as an entire category, with lemons like Fright Night, The Thing and Priest. “As bad as the economy is for adults, it’s worse for teenagers,” said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com, by way of an explanation. “Because they have less disposable income and because they are more plugged in to audience reaction on Facebook and Twitter, the teenage audience is becoming picky,” he added. “That’s a nightmare for studios that are used to pushing lowest-common-denominator films.” Fellman said he had seen evidence that younger consumers were choosing other leisure activities over movies. “There may be a correlation to the recent strength of video game sales,” he said. “You look at a game like the new Call of Duty selling $400 million in its first 24 hours and say, ‘What? How is that even possible?”’ On the other hand, several movies aimed squarely at older audiences attracted stronger-than-expected revenue, The Help was the prime example. That period drama cost DreamWorks about $25 million to make and took in more than $169 million in North America. “We definitely benefited from coming out at the end of summer, when women are sick of going with their husbands and boyfriends to nothing but robot and superhero movies,” said Brunson Green, a producer of the film. The R-rated Bridesmaids also clicked with older moviegoers, who perhaps responded, distribution executives said, to a premise that seemed fresh: women behaving as badly as the guys of The Hangover Part II, which was a smash with $255 million. Bridesmaids cost about $33 million and took in $169 million, causing a race in Hollywood to develop copycat films. Too much of anything, however, can produce a hangover and studios started to feel one with family films, which have been among the most reliable moneymakers in recent years. Some new entries delivered solid results, Rio, The Smurfs, but a number of them stumbled in North America. Those include Sony’s Arthur Christmas, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Mars Needs Moms, which was by some measures the biggest flop of 2011, costing at least $150 million and taking in about $21 million. Even Pixar had trouble. The Disneyowned animation studio had a hit in Cars 2, with more than $191 million in domestic ticket sales, but that total was Pixar’s worst single result, after adjusting for inflation. Star power, or a lack thereof, was again a negative factor at the box office in 2011. There were bright spots, of course: Tom Cruise appears to be regaining momentum with the latest Mission: Impossible film; Johnny Depp charmed audiences once more with The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which took in $241 million for Disney (and exceeded $1 billion globally); Cameron Diaz earned her keep in Bad Teacher, which took in more than $100 million for Sony. But it was wreckage for most marquee names: Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig disappointed in Cowboys & Aliens; Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller landed with a thud in Tower Heist, Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks bombed in the independently financed Larry Crowne. New Year’s Eve, essentially a string of star cameos, has been essentially ignored. More troubling, studio executives say, were failed efforts by some younger stars to become bigger box-office draws. Ryan Reynolds never took off as Green Lantern, and Jonah Hill, praised for a supporting role in Moneyball, flopped as the main attraction in The Sitter. Russell Brand missed in a remake of Arthur, as did Taylor Lautner in Abduction. Amanda Seyfried struggled in Red Riding Hood. Two exceptions were Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Chris Evans as Captain America: The First Avenger. Both of those newcomers, helped by their superhero tights, found substantial audiences. 30 Sunday, January 1, 2012 PLAYHOUSE www.qatar-tribune.com Beetle Bailey Blondie YESTERDAY’S ANSWER Popeye Spiderman LEARN ARABIC Yasrokh Scream Yahlam Dream Yureed Want Zits Yashrab Drink Yaboud Worship Yuhmil Neglect Dennis the Menace The Lockhorns Phone: 44666810 FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTACT US AT: Fax: 44654975 Post Box No: 23493 Email: admin@qatar-tribune.com By King Features Syndicate, Inc. TECHNOLOGY Sunday, January 1, 2012 www.qatar-tribune.com 31 Passwords may be passe before long SOMINI SENGUPTA NYT SYNDICATE P ASSWORDS are a pain to remember. What if a quick wiggle of five fingers on a screen could log you in instead? Or speaking a simple phrase? Neither idea is far-fetched. Computer scientists in New York are training their iPads to recognise their owners by the touch of their fingers as they make a caressing gesture. Banks are already using a software that recognises your voice, supplementing the standard PIN. And after years of predicting its demise, security researchers are renewing their efforts to supplement and perhaps one day obliterate the old-fashioned password. “If you ask me what is the biggest nuisance today, I would say it’s the 40 different passwords I have to create and change,” said Nasir Memon, a computer science professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University in Brooklyn who is leading the iPad project. Many people would agree. The password has become a monkey on Computer scientists in New York are training their iPads to recognise their owners by the touch of their fingers as they make a caressing gesture our digital backs – an essential key to our many devices and accounts, but increasingly a source of exasperation and insecurity. The research arm of the Defense Department is looking for ways to use cues like a person’s typing quirks to continuously verify identity – in case, say, a soldier’s laptop ends up in enemy hands on the battlefield. In a more ordinary example, Google recently began nudging users to consider a two-step log-in system, combining a password with a code sent to their phones. Google’s latest Android software can unlock a phone when it recognises the owner’s face or – not so safe – when it is tricked by someone holding up a photograph of the owner’s face. Still, despite these recent advances, it may be premature to announce the end of passwords, as Bill Gates famously did in 2004, when he said “the password is dead.” “The spectacularly incorrect assumption ‘passwords are dead’ has been harmful, discouraging research on how to improve the lot of close to 2 billion people who use them,” Cormac Herley, a researcher at Microsoft, the company that Gates founded, wrote in a recent paper. Herley suggested instead that developers try “to better support the use of passwords” – for example, by helping people protect their wireless connections from eavesdroppers. “Passwords,” Herley continued, “have proved themselves a worthy opponent: All those who have attempted to replace them have failed.” The touch-screen approach of Memon works because, as it happens, each person makes the same gesture uniquely. Their fingers are different, they move at different speeds, they have what he calls a different “flair.” He wants logging in to be easy; besides, he said, some people find biometric measures like an iris scan to be “creepy.” In his research, the most popular gestures turned out to be the ones that feel most intuitive. One was to turn the image of a combination lock 90 degrees in one direction. Another was to sign one’s name on the screen. In principle, the gesture can be used to unlock a device, or an app on the device that safely holds a variety of passwords. Despite their resilience, passwords are weak, notably because their users have limited memories and a weakness for blurting out secrets. Most people need dozens of them, and they tend to pick ones that are so complex they need to be written down, or so simple they can be easily guessed. Recently, criminals have become adept at stealing passwords by sneaking malicious software onto computers or tricking users into typing them into an illegitimate site. Companies like Facebook and Twitter have sought to address the frustration with passwords by allowing their usernames and passwords to open the door to millions of websites, a convenience that brings obvious risks. A thief with access to a master username and password can have access to a host of accounts. Rachna Dhamija, a California computer scientist turned entrepreneur, sought to combat those weaknesses by breaking up the password. The user first logs in to the service that Dhamija built, UsableLogin, and signs in with her own partial password. Behind the scenes, the service verifies that the user is on an authorised device, and pulls the third piece from the cloud, generating a unique password for any website that the user wants to log in to – Facebook, for instance. In other words, one piece of the password rests with the user, another is stored in her device, and a third piece is kept online. “You take a secret and you spread it across,” said Dhamija, whose service was recently acquired by Webroot Software, based in Broomfield. “You’re spreading the risk. The password is not stored in its whole form anywhere.” But even if a user has been authorised at the start of a session, what if someone else gains access to her computer an hour later? Darpa, the Defense Department’s technology research arm, has invited security researchers to develop ways to verify a user every instant, based on the way the individual uses the machine – “for example, how the user handles the mouse and how the user crafts written language in an email or document,” it explains on its website. Each of these techniques is driven by the notion that a password alone is an insufficient means to verify online identity. Think of them as a fortification: a password plus. Many companies use a smart card or a security “dongle” – a small piece of hardware that plugs into the computer and functions as a key – as that second step of verification to allow access to internal networks. Today, biometrics – an individual’s unique physical traits – are emerging as an alternative. At least a half-dozen banks in the United States ask their customers to verify who they are by reciting a twosecond phrase to a computer over the phone, in addition to punching in their PINs. It could be as simple as “at my bank,” and a million customers could recite the very same phrase and still sound unique, according to Nuance Communications, a company based in Burlington, that makes the technology. As mobile phones become bodily appendages for people worldwide, they too are emerging as instruments to verify identity. Google introduced its two-step process earlier this year. It sends a six-digit code to an application on a Google user’s cellphone to be entered, along with a password, when signing onto a Google account on a computer or tablet. The code can also be sent as a text message for those who don’t have smartphones, or it can be conveyed through a phone call. The extra step is not mandatory, and the company will not say how widely it has been adopted. But as vulnerable as passwords are to theft and compromise, Google says, it is increasingly important for a user’s identity to be verified through another channel – a cell phone, in this case. “I think we’ll start to see people using their mobile devices as their pervasive identifiers,” said Brendon Wilson, a security researcher at Symantec. “The password will no longer be the final arbiter that you are you. You will see layers on top.” 32 Sunday, January 1, 2012 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 7:00 pm CNN International: GLOBAL EXCHANGE 7:15 pm Disney Junior: HANDY MANNY 7:30 pm Fox Sports: NFL GAME DAY 10:00 pm Crime & Investigation: RAW: GIRLS, GANGS AND THE HOOD TV PRIME TIME GUIDE CNN INTERNATIONAL CARTOON NETWORK DISNEY JUNIOR 7:00 PM BEN 10: ULTIMATE ALIEN JAKE & THE NEVERLAND PIRATES 7:30 PM THE MARVELOUS MISADVENTURES OF FLAPJACK HANDY MANNY GLOBAL EXCHANGE 8:00 PM 8:30 PM INTERNATIONAL DESK CNN MARKETPLACE AFRICA AFRICAN VOICES 9:00 PM GLOBAL EXCHANGE INTERNATIONAL DESK 9:30 PM CNN MARKETPLACE MIDDLE EAST ROAD TO DURBAN 10:00 PM WORLD SPORT FAREED ZAKARIA GPS 10:30 PM MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE ANIMATED STORIES ADVENTURE TIME HANDY MANNY JAKE & THE GRIM ADVENTURES OF THE NEVERLAND PIRATES BILLY & MANDY THE HIVE MINI ADVENTURES CHOWDER OF WINNIE THE POOH A POEM IS... lessons! It’s time for a break: Farhan Akhtar AN actor learns a lot of new things every day — and age is no bar for 69-year-old megastar Amitabh Bachchan who is taking piano lessons and is loving it too. “There is so much to gather and imbibe in this world... need time and concentration... But by far the most enlightening hour spent was with Aadesh Shrivastav, friend, music director, creator of many important works! He gave me some basics on the piano to practice... ahhh!! The best feeling in the world... a connect to the Almighty,” Amitabh posted on Twitter. AFTER a heavy year with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Don 2: The King Is Back, Farhan Akhtar is more than glad to take a sabbatical from work. “Good morning. Finally taking a break from work. Time for family, friends, pets, reading a book, watch films, do nothing if the heart desires,” Farhan posted on micro-blogging site Twitter. He not only won praise for his acting in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, but his slick directorial skills in Don 2: The King Is Back also brought him a lot of appreciation recently. In 2012, Farhan will be seen in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. AMITABH BACHCHAN Iconic punch-lines back with a bang TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK zarooratein kam hai, isliye mere iman me dum hai - Ajay was surely dumdaar enough to carry the movie to the next level - the opening collections created a new Box Office record. Even baddie Prakash Raj got his share of one-liners, Ata mazhi satakli, to which Devgn replied, Ata tujhi satkel. O NCE upon a time in Bollywood films, crying moms in their crumpled cotton saris would believe that Mere Karan Arjun aayenge long after they had been killed; bad guys would sit on golden thrones, sporting hideous blond wigs, and say Mogambo khush hua; a golden hearted drunken lover would say Pushpa, I hate tears; a bandit king would ask his sidekick, Ab tera kya hoga Kaalia and 11 mulkon ki police would look for an underworld hero. Just when we thought those iconic and sometimes genuinely funny one-liners were going to be relegated to history books, the return of the B-Town potboiler gave new hope and life to those punch-lines that had almost gone missing. Thank God for Hindi masala films that helped revive the art of punchlines. Now you have new age commercial filmmakers rediscovering the relevance of smart one-liners in helping create blockbusters. Everytime superstars like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Amitabh Bachchan voiced their thoughts on screen, you could hear the thunderous round of applause and the almost unheard, ceetees. The year 2011 went down in cinematic history as one that redefined the way our stars speak. On screen, of course! DON 2 The year ended with SRK’s dhamakedaar dialoguebaazi. From well-versed one liners that included that cult Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin... namumkin hai to new tongueteasers like, ‘Sir’ bahut shareef lagta hai, call me ‘Don and Mr Mallik, aap meri maa ko nahin jaante the. The dialogues of the film also started an entire series of ‘Donisms’ that’s on everyone’s lips now. BODYGUARD Salman Khan had already played his pivotal part in kick-starting the trend of powerful punch-lines with Wanted and Dabangg; but he’s not THE DIRTY PICTURE Salman Khan in the film Ready. had enough of them. Sample this, Bodyguard hoon, dhoondh nikalunga to the almost memorable, Mujh par ek ehsaan karna, ke mujhpe koi ehsaan mat karna. There are more Salman-isms after every 15 minutes with one random line in Sallu-ishtyle. Who wants story-lines and plots? After directing the same film in three other languages, Siddique got his punch power right in his Bollywood directorial debut. READY Main kutta hun, yeh meri kutiya hai; aaya mausam kat ne ka... Bow Wow is an almost spoof of a song from Maine Pyaar Kiya and now a film dialogue too! Salman Khan reestablished the old Bollywood saying, ‘dialogues alone can bring audience to cinema halls, was re-established in this Anees Bazmee flick that saw Salman mouthing lines like, Teen cheezo ko kabhi underestimate mat karna; I, me and myself. SINGHAM Years after he thought standing on two speeding bikes was the coolest thing ever, Ajay Devgn did something cooler (and we are not talking of his tattoos). Clad in khaki hues, he said, Abhi ke abhi to Meri Director Milan Luthria and producer Ekta Kapoor clearly understood how badly the audience wanted to wolf-whistle and throwing chillars everytime the hero/heroine spoke her/his lines. Here was a heroine who delivered one liners that could give her male counterparts (in the film and the industry) a run for their money. Vidya Balan topped the year with her impeccable performance and flawlessly dished out an entire series of witty punch lines that might have been also instrumental in the film’s A-certification. Vidya’s main entertainment hoon and Mera naam badnaam hokar hua hain were simply teasers that sent the audience drooling in collective fantasy in the dark confines of a movie theatre. Ooooh la la anyone? FARHAN AKHTAR Just when we thought those iconic and sometimes genuinely funny one-liners were going to be relegated to history books, the return of the B-Town potboiler gave new hope and life to those punch-lines that had almost gone missing here for working hard to live up to the trend of ‘dialogues are back’. With upcoming remakes like Agneepath and Chasme Baddoor (remembered for their witty one-liners), looks like there will be plenty of bindaas bol moment for us in store. In upcoming films like Rowdy Rathod (Ilaka tera, dhamaka mera and Faulad ki aulaad) the dialoguebaazi continues unabated. Shah Rukh Khan in Don 2. BUDDAH HOGA TERRA BAAP The original angry young man and the principal packs some more power-packed lines in his new, revamped macho avatar. In Puri Jagannath’s Hindi directorial debut Big B is the angry not so young man whose dialogues are ‘beeped’ into silence (this one is to save the Censor Board some time and hassle, and leave the room open for imagination). His epic one-liner Hum jahan khade hote hai, line wahin se shuru ho jati hai shared space with many brand new ones like Yeh aaj-kal ke bachche hamen copy karne lage hai in the film. The five-minute long frustrated lover’s rant and rave in Pyaar Ka Punchnama by the character of Rajat (Kartik Tiwari), the giggling trio of Delhi Belly and many other movies like Yeh Saali Zindagi and Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster also deserve mention 2011: Debut directors’ cut TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK T HE year 2011 saw many Bollywood directors making their debut on the silver screen. We take a look at them. 1. KIRAN RAO: DHOBI GHAT The film was marketed and promoted well (thanks to hubby Aamir Khan). The cinematography and the treatment of the sub- 7. AMOL GUPTE: STANLEY KA DABBA His foray into direction was a painful one after actor-producer and good friend Aamir Khan took over the reins of Taare Zameen Par. But Amol Gupte did show his magic with his debut directorial venture Stanley Ka Dabba. His own son Partho’s acting earned much appreciation. A moderate hit, it received good reviews. ject was also appreciated. Made with a budget of Rs 10 crore, the film did recover its money. 2. PARVIN DABAS: SAHI DHANDHE GALAT BANDE Produced and directed by actor and photographer Pravin Dabas. The movie failed to create a buzz. This resulted in a major flop. 3. ABHINAY DEO: GAME, DELHI BELLY An advertising professional, Deo had two films in his kitty in 2011. And he directed films titled Game for Farhan Akhtar’s production house and Delhi Belly for Aamir Khan’s productions. Game failed miserably but Delhi Belly was a hit and hugged the limelight for different reasons including the cuss words used in the film. 4. DEEPA SAHI : TERE MERE PHERE Actress Deepa Sahi turned a director with Tere Mere Phere. The film turned out to be a disaster. 5. REMO D’SOUZA: F A L T U This choreographer turned director’s film did not have much to offer. But the movie was marketed well. And the song Char baj gaye became popular. A surprise hit, as they say. 6. PANKAJ KAPUR: MAUSAM Pankaj Kapur is considered as one of the finest actors so people’s expectations were riding high on this film. The film which starred his son Shahid Kapur and actor Sonam Kapoor was a big disappointment. 8. ROHIT DHAWAN : DESI BOYZ His father David Dhawan is considered as a ‘hit’ magician. Following his father’s footsteps, Rohit directed this comedy starring Akshay Kumar and John Abraham. Another movie centred on bromance, this one failed to rake in the moolah. 9. NILA MADHAB PANDA: I AM KALAM I Am Kalam, a children’s film, earned international acclaim even before its release in India. The child star of the film, Harsh Mayyar, won a National Award for the film. The movie received critical appreciation. 10. ALI ABBAS ZAFAR: MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN Yash Raj Films gave a dream platform for Ali Abbas Zafar, with stars like Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif as the lead. Katrina Kaif again showed her mettle as a leading star. A feel good movie. 11. ROSHAN ABBAS: ALWAYS KABHI KABHI His directorial debut film Always Kabhi Kabhi which he shot in his alma mater, The La Martiniere Boys’ College in Lucknow, failed to click. 12. BIJOY NAMBIAR: SHAITAN He broke new grounds in film making by directing a crisp, stylish film. His effort to think out of the box was much-appreciated even though the film didn’t particularly break box office records. Richards has designed a pair of light pink and gold embellished peep-toe shoes, with a gold metallic pin heel, in honour of her mother, who passed away from kidney cancer in 2007. “Fashion has always been a passion of mine and I love shoes. Who doesn’t love a feminine, yet sexy pump in her collection? I am teaming up with ShoeDazzle to help a charity. The cause is particularly dear to me because of my mother. It provided an amazing opportunity to combine my passions,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Richards as saying. The proceeds will all go to the Kidney Cancer Association (KCA). POP star Lady Gaga has gone public with her new boyfriend Taylor Kinney in California. The 25-year-old was first linked to The Vampire Diaries actor in July last year after he played her love interest in her music video You And I. Now the couple were photographed with their arms wrapped affectionately around each other in California recently. According to the sun.co.uk, the couple celebrated the holidays at a beach house. LADY GAGA (RIGHT) AND TAYLOR KINNEY DENISE RICHARDS Bradley Cooper romancing Zoe Saldana A source has claimed the pair have started to tell their friends and family that they are in a relationship, and were planning to spend the holidays together on a skiing break in the Rockies TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK S HE became the envy of millions of women worldwide when photographs emerged of her locking lips with Bradley Cooper for upcoming movie The Words earlier last year. Zoe Saldana better get used to being the focus of the actor’s jealous female fans, as it has now been claimed the pair have become more than just friends following their celluloid hook-up in June last year. A source has claimed the pair have started to tell their friends and family that they are in a relationship, and were planning to spend the holidays together on a skiing break in the Rockies. The source told E! News, “They are totally dating.” The claims come just months after the pair first sparked rumours they had taken their friendship to the next level following a picture of the couple together at a New York nightclub. At the time, a representative for the Avatar actress Saldana denied the claims. The rumoured relationship comes just a month after Saldana and fiancee Keith Britton announced they had amicably split after 11 years together. The pair had revealed their engagement in June 2010 when Saldana said she felt entrepreneur Britton was the only person who knew ‘the real Zoe.’ She had previously said of Britton, “I feel that the partners who stay at home have their own lives, but they’re the ones that are living with the real you. I think that they need to be recognised, every now and then, every 10 years, just come out in public - put him on the spot and just say thank you. He’s a very independent soul. He understands what I do, but this is not what he fell in love with and that’s what I love.” Meanwhile, Cooper, who was voted People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive earlier this year, has recently been linked to French actress Melanie Laurent following a rumoured dalliance with Jennifer Lopez. The New Year’s Eve actress thinks strong feelings grow over time but she accepts the fact that you can tell if you like someone as soon as you meet. “I don’t believe in love at first sight. I think loves grows as you get to know the person. But definitely I believe in chemistry. You can be attracted to somebody and instantly feel something you’ve never felt before,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying. “I swear it’s a pheromones thing. There is something about Josh that is so uniquely attractive and sexy to me. And he wasn’t my usual type at all. I went for moody and mysterious guys, usually actors. Josh is so different from any man I know,” she added. Katherine Heigl Rose McGowan splurges $1.39million on new house TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK R OSE McGowan no doubt felt like pulling out a tissue after selling her last house. The Charmed star sold her Las Feliz property earlier this year at a loss after believing it was the cause of her allergies. But she is surely feeling a lot better after buying a new dream home in the Hollywood Hills for an eye-watering $1.39 million. The new property has four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a two-car garage and an outdoor fireplace, as well as plenty of space to entertain, including a large living room, a dining area and a luxury kitchen. There is also plenty of outdoor space with an expansive decking area to the rear of the property, which provides the perfect place to soak up some rays. Most importantly, it was advertised as ‘ready to move in,’ which is a boon for the busy model.’ However it is doubtful she will enjoy living there as much as she did in her beloved previous home, which she only let go of because of her troubles with allergies. She decided to sell her old Spanish villa style home in February after becoming tired of her constant suffering. She reluctantly made the final decision after spending thousands of dollars in an attempt to fix the air ducts. Rose said, “My eyes kept swelling. I spent about $17,000 overhauling the duct system. Everyday I was staying at hotels because my eyes were swollen. It felt like I got stung by a bee.” And it was not until after she had sold the house to top music manager Scott Rodger for $1,775,000 that she realised it was actually her pillows that were causing her troubles. She said, “I went to the new house, which I loathe, and it happened again. It turns out I’m allergic to the pillows.” By the time she realised the real cause of the problem it was too late. She said she returned to her old home upon learning what the root of her health problems was - and sobbed in the driveway. She added, “I tried to see if the current owner would sell me my house back, but he didn’t.” And while Rodger, who has represented the likes of Paul McCartney and Arcade Fire, did eventually quote her a price, it was far too high for her. No doubt she will be pleased with her new house though. While it is not as classy as her previous address, it is still good enough for any starlet. It is a more modern looking mid-century modern style house with 2,927 square feet of living space. RICHA GANGOPADHYAY Sportive Deeksha, serious Karthika RAJESH PILLAI Will Nayantara play ball with Ram Gopal Verma? TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK N Deeksha Seth Karthika TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK T HE headline has nothing to do with the real life characteristics of Deeksha Seth, the Rajapattai heroine and Karthika, the ‘Ko’ girl. But about the characters they are portraying in their forthcoming projects in the neighbouring Tollywood. While Karthika, who is sharing the screen space with NTR Junior and Trisha in Dammu, is playing the heir of a royal family, Deeksha is doing the role of a soccer player in her upcoming Telugu film Nippu, which has Ravi Teja in the lead role. Though Karthika is not the heroine of Dammu, her role has got enough importance and it comes at a crucial juncture. As far as Nippu is concerned, it is a commercial entertainer with a difference and Deeksha is happy romancing Ravi Teja, a source from the Telugu Desam say. Meanwhile, both the actresses are keen on taking their careers to the next level in Kollywood. Karthika is already part of Bharathiraja’s magnum opus Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum. Deeksha plays Simbu’s love interest in Vettai Mannan. AYANTARA has a way of catching headlines even if she maintains a stoic silence, be it her films or her life. The actress bid a teary farewell to films, albeit a short one, during the last day shooting of her historical Telugu film Sri Rama Rajyam. The actress is now making waves in the Tamil and Telugu film industry, because of some reports suggesting that she might get back to acting soon. There is news doing the rounds in the entertainment circles in Kollywood and Tollywood that Nayantara might be the heroine in Ram Gopal Verma’s upcoming film. This film too is believed to be on the historical lines and according to sources the heroine (Nayantara, if she agrees to do the role) gets to play Mandodhari, the wife of demon king Ravana. Some sources in the industry also reveal that Nagarjuna might play the role of Ravana. Nayantara’s previous attempt at doing a mythological role, as Sita, had proved a huge success for the actress in Sri Rama Rajyam. Now if she nods in the affirmative then this film too m i g h t repeat history, say media specialists. But there are some insiders in t h e Tollywood circles who feel otherwise about Nayantara’s role in this proposed film.
