“Saving Rotary Storyland/Playland: A Fairy Tale with a Happy Ending ”
Bruce Batti is the President of the Jeffery Scott Agency and Vice Chair of the
Rotary Storyland/Playland Board. For generations, Storyland/Playland, via the
magic of make believe, has inspired children’s love of learning. For the first time in
60 years, The Parks did not open this spring. Bruce Batti will provide information on
new additions, sustainability and the planned re-opening of The Parks on Labor
Day Weekend, 2015.

What should I write? How do I find the words to express my appreciation for your support? So many memories that will stay with me forever. The following are a few of many:
The Fresno State vs. Nebraska football game—hottest day of the year; Emotion in the
room when we honored our public servants—day after Captain Dern’s tragic accident;
The joy of piano music—tip-jar fun; The plus and minus of technology—“can you hear
me back there?”; Somber beginnings of meetings—lost too many good people; COGS—past presidents
sharing why they are Rotarians; Oklin Bloodworth at the holiday party—teenage granddaughters dance
the jazzy jaguar; The clock—my eyes never strayed far from it; Greeters—confirming we are the friendliest club in town; Sitting next to outstanding speakers—Gary Schlossberg is actually better looking up
close; Dick and Anna—couldn’t have made it without them; Sergeants of Arms—will miss the teasing;
And, the numerous ways our club has exhibited Service Above Self, which led to our club being awarded
the Outstanding Rotary Club of the Year.

Fresno— This Month at a Glance
The Rotary
May 4
President Shirley Bruegman kicked off the meeting with a warm welcome to all those in attendance. Duane Oswald
stepped to the mic for the day’s invocation focused on thanks to all Rotarians around the world who offer their time
and talents to serve others. Christy Nottingham helped usher in the spirit of Spring when she sang “Daisy Bell” before Barry Falke introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. President Shirley then announced that the Rotary Club of
Fresno received awards at the District Conference in Monterey. The awards are: Club Service, International Service,
Outstanding District Leader, Outstanding President and Outstanding Club. This is a great achievement for the whole
club to share. Don Eskes had the privilege of presenting a check for $2,000 to Joni & Friends for a computer and two
monitors. These items will help them serve the 700 people affected by disabilities and their families. Karin ChaoBushoven kept Don up front for another presentation of $1,497 to the Fresno Rescue Mission. This contribution will
help outfit a presentation room where young people can experience the challenges of the homeless and the underserved in the Fresno community. Todd Sheller stepped forward for a check presentation of $8,000 to Fresno Pacific
University for the AIMS Center for Math and Science Camp. These funds go toward a week-long enrichment camp for
low-income and minority youth across Fresno and surrounding communities. And finally, Lorna Milligan gave $500 to
Science Fair Award Winner, Cameron Robertson. His A Crab for All Seasons project examined what affects the distribution and abundance of Pacific Mole Crab in the Monterey Swash Zone. Congratulations, Cameron.

SPORTS DAY FUN FOR ALL!!!

President Shirley Bruegman began the meeting on a quiet note when she announced the passing of Rotarian Debra
Kazanjian’s father Jack Kazanjian on May 2 at the age of 92. Jack was a Fresno Rotarian from 1972 to 1988. Please
keep the family in your thoughts. Next up was Ron Stumpf with a thoughtful invocation before Dave Gilmore stepped to
the mic to lead the singing of “Happy Birthday” to those Rotarians celebrating another year in May. After that President
Shirley took a few minutes to thank everyone who was a part of Sports Day and Dinner. She recognized a few people
whose efforts stood out. They included Dick Herrinton and the Sports Day & Dinner Committee. Barbara Henkel and
Pete Pierre, III for organizing the dinner. Ed O’Neill & Tom Licouris for leading the Target Shooting. Mark Townsend for
leading the motorcycle ride. Mel Yow and Dick Herrinton for teeing off the golfers. Servers and setup for the dinner: Jennifer Armey, Shirley Grace, John Salmonson, Steve Forker, Kathy Dennen, Andy Navaroff, Katie Rigby, Tom
Licouris, Larry Pickens. Thank you to all the sponsors of the event and everyone else who made it a great Rotary event.

COMMUNITY SERVICE:
It the following projects that Community Projects Committee has researched and
recommends were approved for funding:
1. $1,200 to Bach Children’s Choir for a computer and printer for operation purposes.
The Bach Children’s Choir has 160 students in diverse cultural and socioeconomic levels.
Students learn music theory, rhythm and matching pitch. Studies find that children involved in music programs show increased academic improvement, confidence, leadership skills and concentration. The choir sings in a multiple of languages and take time to
discuss the cultural aspects of the songs. The students perform a music performance at
the end of the semester.
2. $1,229 to CASA of Fresno and Madera Counties for purchasing ten office chairs to
complete training room upgrade. CASA has over 150 advocates and ten employees that
use this space for training sessions, volunteer meetings, and advocate support groups to
better support the over 2,500 children currently in the foster youth system. The room
currently honors the Fresno Rotary with a plaque for its previous donation.
3. $2,390 to Central Valley Honor Flight for ten wheelchairs. The Central Valley Honor
Flight currently takes 70 veterans at a time on its Honor flights to Washington D.C. Most
of these veterans (between the ages of 86-100) require wheelchairs for the flight and
visit. Currently, the Central Valley Honor Flight owns 45 wheelchairs and most trips
require wheelchairs are needed to be rented. The Fresno Rotary Logo will be on the back
of each wheelchair.
4. $2,500 to the Fresno Fire Chiefs Foundation for the “Helmets are Cool” program to
purchase bike helmets, posters and trading cards to be dispersed to elementary school
aged children and their schools. Head injury is the leading cause of death in bicycle
crashes and it is the most important determinant of death and permanent disability. The
single most effect way to reduce head injury from bicycle crashes is to wear a helmet.
Wearing a bicycle helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent.
Fresno Rotary will be listed on the FFCF website and a Fresno Rotary sticker will be
added to the approximately 2,000 red helmets.
5. $2,500 to Light-House Recovery Program, Inc. for playground equipment for afterschool program and computers on site for adult G.E.D. study program. Approximately 1030 child participate each day in the afterschool program in South East Fresno at First &
Grant. Fresno Rotary grant to Light-House will be shared on their webpage and in the
newsletter.
6. $2,500 to Stone Soup Fresno for converting the parking lot to a playground for the
Early Childhood Development Center. These funds will be used for a circular concrete
“Tricycle road” around the playground structure and the engineered wood fiber fil/mulch
will fill in around the round walkway to help protect a child’s fall. Approximately 200 children between 0-5 years old and their families will benefit from the Early Childhood Development Center and this playground each year. The target demographic is the families in
El Dorado Park neighborhood and SE Asian families throughout Fresno. Fresno Rotary
will be displayed on a sign in the new playground and possibly a concrete stamp in the
concrete path.
7. $4,030.95 to Valley Center for the Blind for office equipment: a love seat, two guest
chairs, center table, with three seats, a coffee table, a 48” television and DVD player with
a wall mount. In 2014, Valley Center for the Blind served nearly 250 blind and visually
impaired individuals ranging from young adults to senior citizens. Valley Center for the
Blind has a new facility and Fresno Rotary will be recognized by a plaque in the reception
area.
PRESIDENT
The annual new-member dinner is set for June 25. Invitations will be mailed today.
PRESIDENT-ELECT:
President-Elect Hal H. Bolen II thanked those that attend the planning retreat in May.
He reminded Directors that committee chairs goals, budget, and committee meetings for
the 2015-16 year are due May 31, 2015.
Hal will be having a past presidents advisory meeting in May. Hal is also attending the
monthly meetings of the presidents and president-elects.
YOUTH SERVICE:
The inbound Youth Exchange student will arrive in August from Denmark. Lisa Woolf will
be the first host family. Families in the Bullard High School district are needed. If you are
interested in getting involved with dinners or weekend outings, a certification is required.
Please contact Susan Anderson, Emil Milevoj, or Patti Thornton if interested in getting
involved during the 2015-16 school year.
VOCATIONAL SERVICE:
The Miss California Contestants will join us at the luncheon on Monday, June 22. Members are invited to come early at 11:45 to greet the contestants. The scholarship luncheon and presentation is June 1.
