Opening Day 2013 - Balboa Yacht Club
BALBOA YACHT CLUB Opening Day 2013 Saturday, May 11 – O F F I C I A L P R O G R A M – To BYC Members and Guests, Welcome to Balboa Yacht Club’s 91st Opening Day. We are happy you can join us as we celebrate the beginning of our 2013 yachting season and we invite you to enjoy the ceremony and hospitality throughout the day. The 91st anniversary year theme is Our Heritage of Yachting. We all came to BYC with a passion for boating and to make friends and memories on or near the water. The connections we make here become part of our heritage and handing that love of yachting down to the next generation is what has kept BYC strong for the last 91 years. We are pleased to share that spirit with you today. After the ceremony, over 70 boats representing the best of the BYC fleet are open for your inspection and enjoyment. Our Junior Members at the Maritime Sciences and Seamanship Foundation booth will tell you about their accomplishments of the past year, made possible by the generosity of our members and friends. Please stop by and learn about this amazing group of young people and their activities. We encourage you to greet and introduce yourselves to new members who will be wearing a medallion with Our Heritage of Yachting logo. Please join us on the Flag Deck for a casual lunch or dinner served by our dedicated staff. Be sure to return to the Flag Deck for the Awards ceremony at 4pm when trophies are awarded to the best boats from the Yacht Inspection today. Thank you for joining us as we honor our heritage and celebrate BYC’s 91st anniversary. Enjoy the day. It was built in 1998 and continues to race both in offshore and buoy races from Santa Barbara to San Diego. There are at least 12 other active J120s racing in the Southern California area. There have been many recent upgrades including Satellite phone and internet service, new flooring, new racing sails, radar and interactive electronics that let the crew watch the boat’s performance on their iPhones or iPads while racing. Last year alone we logged over 2,700 miles. When not on a race, Adios is at home sitting at Whites with her tender Karismatic. Welcome aboard! ANDREYA Nathan and Andreya Shill Sportfisher 44 ANTARES Betty Andrews Ranger 33 Antares, a Ranger 33, hull #5, joined the Alan Andrews family in November 1971. She served as Flagship for BYC in 1986 when her skipper, S/C Alan Andrews, M.D. was Commodore and again in 1996 as Flagship for SCYA. Antares and crew enjoy her mooring at Whites and sailing in the local waters. Welcome Aboard BYC Opening Day 2013! BACCO Rob Chandler Ocean 52 Bacco is a 52 foot sport fishing boat. We have enjoyed fishing with many members in tournaments and weekends as well as loving Whites Cove for weekends with family and friends. Bacco is a take off on the Roman god Bacchus and hopefully we don’t take that to an extreme. Everyone is welcome. BETWEEN THE SHEETS Leslie Drozd and Ross Pearlman Jeanneau 50 BIEN ROULÉE V/C Glenn Highland Andrews 39 Designed by S/C Alan Andrews, Bien Roulée is a fast and comfortable racer for point to point ocean racing. Built of carbon/epoxy, she is light and has demonstrated her speed winning many races in the 5 years since she was launched, including the 2011 Ullman Offshore Championship. BOLERO Rich and Cristy Fischbeck Ericson 27 Bolero, a 1972 Ericson 27, has been in the Fischbeck family for many years. She most recently won first place in the 2012 Border Run Sprint Course! We are looking forward to the 2013 Beer Can season and many trips to Whites. Welcome Aboard! BOLT S/C Craig and Carson Reynolds Nelson Marek 55 Bolt was built by Carroll Marine in 1998, hull # 7. We purchased her last year. She’s 35’, weighs 6,000 pounds, and PRHF 42. She’s light, fast, and fun. BOUNTY Gordon Cowan and Dwight Spiers Eastbay SX 49 The Eastbay Series by Grand Banks is a modern interpretation of the classic Down East style lobster boat. The modified Deep-V hull was designed by Raymond Hunt & Associates and comes equipped with twin Caterpillar C12 700 HP diesel engines which produce an efficient cruising speed of 24 knots. Welcome Aboard! CARINA S/C Burt and Bonnie Zillgitt Grand Banks 36 Carina has provided us with many years of great pleasure and adventure. In addition to the years of local cruising, she has taken us safely from the Sea of Cortez to Alaska on the West Coast and from Galveston, Texas to Maine, including the Bahamas and Great Lakes on the other one. The distance traveled is equal to more than twice around the world, all in perfect safety and with very little adversity. Welcome aboard. CHAMELEON Marc Acosta Sabot Sabot #8393, Chameleon, was purchased in San Diego in 2010. Having been raced hard for many years since being built in 1976, there were significant issues needing attention including a cracked rail at the leeboard fitting, extensive spider cracking and dry rotting of the mast can support. Marc addressed each issue over the course of the next 2-1/2 years. All gelcoat was removed from the hull and spider cracked areas were ground out (sometimes until there were holes) and re-glassed. The hull was faired with a long board and then gelcoated by Crystalliner. All interior wood and outside rails were replaced by Marc. The mast can support was completely rebuilt. The interior was LP’d and web sprayed to match original styling. The boat is currently being sailed by Lynn Acosta in the BYC adult Sabot regattas. Coincidently, a picture posted on Facebook lead to the discovery that the boat was previously owned by past BYC member, Carolyn Ulander in the early 1980s. CHOWDERHEAD Ed and Karen Kliem Eastbay 38 We acquired Chowderhead in 2006 in Connecticut and had it shipped to California in 2007. Compared to our previous sailboats, we are now able to get to Catalina in 1½ hours. Chowderhead, an Eastbay 38 was manufactured in 2000 by Grand Banks in Malaysia. Welcome Aboard! CONTINUUM R/C Gary Davidson & Mel & Priscilla Redmond Catalina 25 CORGI Martha Thomas Tartan 37 Corgi, a Tartan 37, was designed by Sparkman and Stevens and built for the Thomas family in 1982. She has been a family member ever since! The most recent update to her equipment is a Solar Stik, which incorporates both a wind generator and two solar panels mounted on her stern. CRESCENDO Everett and Anne Fenton Celestial 50 CROWN ME Dave and Laurie March Marquis 59 DEFIANT BYC Race Committee Boat Grand Banks 38 Commissioned on March 31, 2012 as BYC’s Committee Boat, Defiant was christened on Opening Day 2012. She is a 1991 Grand Banks Sedan with a fiberglass hull and single-screw Cummins diesel. Her previous owner was a space shuttle astronaut who berthed her at the San Francisco Yacht Club, Tiburon, California. Primarily used as BYC’s Race Committee boat, Defiant also serves as a platform for on the water classrooms and training and represents BYC in the Christmas Boat Parade. DeMINIMIS DOUBLETIME Christine and Murray Robertson S/C Alan Andrews and Molly Lynch Hunter 35 Andrews 38 EDDY Marc Acosta Sabot Marc and his father, Edward, built Eddy over the span of 3+ years working mostly on Sundays. The initial design was completed in 2009 and construction commenced in August of that year in Marc’s father’s garage. Along the way, Marc got design, construction and rigging advice from fellow BYC members Denis Allison, S/C Alan Andrews, Rowell Greene and Bob Riley. Construction was completed in the fall of 2012 and the final coat of varnish was applied in the spring of this year. Marc plans to race Eddy in the BYC Twilight series this summer. EL CONEJO Harvey and Patty Wills Mainship Pilot 30 A few years ago (by chance) we were lucky enough to come across this boat, then known as Miss Fritz. At the time she was in very sad shape, but with lots of persistence and patience, she grew into the current El Conejo. She is a very enjoyable boat and quite a lot of fun, spending many hours cruising Newport Harbor and weekends at Whites Cove. ESCAPADE James Collings Regal Express 42 A 42’ Regal Express Cruiser, Escapade is powered by twin 480 HP Volvos, cruises at 25 knots, and tops out at 32 knots. Weighing 25,000 pounds, she carries 320 gallons of diesel and burns about 1.5 gallons/statute mile at cruise. The equipment list includes 48 mile radar, integrated GPS plotter/ auto pilot, bow thruster, water maker, and satellite television throughout. Her main deck features a 5 person dinette, wet bar, and built in barbecue. Her accommodations include a spacious main salon with galley and dining area, two cabins with ensuite heads. She offers a fast passage to Catalina, with ample room for entertaining upon arrival. Escapade is a Mexico veteran, having made two three month trips to the Sea of Cortez, cruising the islands from San Carlos to Cabo San Lucas. FULL CIRCLE S/C Richard and Marrene Pacelli Catalina 42 Full Circle is a prime example of Catalina 42 Mark I series. She is a cruiser that thinks she is a racer. She is a veteran of the 2006 CDM to Cabo race, multiple Newport to Ensenada races, Long Point Race week and countless other sailing regattas and events. She has cruised the Channel Islands and elsewhere. She loves her visits to Whites and is looking forward to this year’s season. GALATEA Allen Stewart Matthews 38 This entry in the Vintage category was built in Port Clinton, Ohio in 1941 for William M. Passano, a wealthy publisher and owner of Waverly Press in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Passano and his family took delivery in Ohio and sailed Galatea 1100 miles through the inland waterway to their home on Gibson Island in the Chesapeake Bay. The trip was chronicled in the February, 1942 issue of The Rudder. Passano owned her, and cared for her, for the next 47 years of his life. In 1988, Tom Skahill, and his wife Patricia (wooden boat historian and NHYC members) acquired the boat and had substantial work done on her on the East Coast. After multiple trips throughout the Chesapeake, Galatea was shipped to the West Coast, renamed Patrician, and became a fixture at NHYC for the next 14 years. After much love and attention from the Skahills, they donated her to OCC in 2002, from which she was adopted by Allen Stewart of BYC who restored her original name, Galatea. For the past 10 years a complete renovation of the boat has been underway to return her to her original state and seaworthiness. Hopefully she will deliver a step back in time, providing memories of the early 1940s before WWII began. I hope you will enjoy your visit aboard Galatea. GEMINI Bruce and Elyse Miller & Jill and David Willke Tiara Express 35 S/C Chuck and Diane Buchanan Grand Banks 32 GETAWAY GOLDEN RIVET Chuck and Amy Simmons Sea Ray 33 We bought our 1975 Sea Ray 330 at the OCC Maritime Auction. We then worked on Golden Rivet for about a year before her launch: new Big Blocks, fresh water tank, holding tank, pumps and more pumps, and electrical panel. Then, fresh upholstery and carpeting rounded it off. We’ve had a lot of fun with her so far, going to Whites and watching Carley sail her Sabot. GOODBYE, COLUMBUS II Ernie and Judy Johanson Duffy 22 GOVNA GRAND ISLE GRATEFUL HEARTS P/C Randy and Lynne Taylor Pursuit CC 23 Doug and Nancy Teulie Randy and Michele Waier Grand Banks 36 Little Harbor Whisper Jet 34 GREEN GO Carley Simmons HALFTIME Schroeder and Wetton families HASTA MAÑANA Rob & Cindy Tyler Sabot Tiara 35 CHB 45 THE HIPPOCAMPUS Emily Volger and Dan Flynn Mandarin 52 We commissioned this Blaine Seeley-designed blue water cruiser, built by Seahorse Marine of Zhuhai, China, to take us on an extended long-range cruise to ports yet to be determined. The plan is to head south to Panama, and then (depending on weather and whim) we’ll decide to turn left through the Canal, or to turn right for Galapagos. The Hippocampus features many redundant systems, such as two independent steering systems and duplicate electronics, along with solar and wind electricity generating systems. She is a “hybrid” vessel equipped with sail and power options to meet whatever energy sources are most readily available. While being prepared to leave town, the yacht has participated in local events, such as the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, winning several categories in the past two years. The Hippocampus is also an excellent platform for whale watching, with several sightings of blue and gray whales surfacing within a few feet of the boat to the delight of those aboard. Her expansive galley and salon have served to entertain numerous gatherings of friends and family. Though hard-core blue water sailing is not common in the Southern California Bight, The Hippocampus has had the opportunity to romp in substantial seas outside Catalina and ships water easily over the enclosed wheelhouse, leaving the crew cozy and dry. We spent several years shopping for the ultimate blue water cruiser, and after test-driving and following the adventures of sister-ships as they crisscrossed the Pacific, we decided this vessel more than adequately meets our needs. HOOK ME UP John and Cynthia Rogers HOOLIGAN Kevin and Meredith Kliem ISLA SOL John and Lindsey Pomer Sportfisher 48 Ericson 41 True North 38 ISLANDER Doug West and Irene Ziebarth Tiara 36 Open Purchased new in 2006, Islander spent her first two seasons on the East Coast, cruising throughout New England and the Chesapeake Bay. In 2007 we shipped her home to Newport Beach. From here she takes us everywhere from Santa Barbara to San Diego and, of course, on countless trips to the Island. Islander is named after the old Cape Cod ferry to Martha’s Vineyard where Doug, as a boy, first fell in love with boats. JINANDA S/C Howard and Sharon Neff Nova Trawler 42 LAGNIAPPE III Mike Michel and Karen Rhyne Jeanneau 50 A Jeanneau Sun Odyssey built in France in 2005, Lagniappe III is the third boat Mike and Karen have owned (third time’s a charm). MADNESS Ralph and Penny Rodheim Rhodes 33 Madness was the last Rhodes 33 to be built. She was completed in 1948 at Newport’s own South Coast Ship Yard. She was raced and owned by Gavin Herbert of NHYC for many years, then sold and went to Long Beach where she sat for three years and deteriorated. I was alerted to her whereabouts and along with Bill Jacoby and Bob King obtained Madness. She went through an extensive renovation and today is actively sailed and raced in many of Newport’s evening series along with several wooden hull yacht club races. MADRUGADA Claude and Laurie Jones Grand Banks 42 We have owned Madrugada, a 2003 Grand Banks 42 Europa (hull #1514) since 2005, logging over 11,000 miles, including trips to Mexico in 2006 and 2008 (La Paz and Cabo). She was in San Francisco, where we cruised the Bay and spent time in the California Delta, in 2010/11, but is now back on Southern California waters at least until next year. Madrugada is equipped for coastal cruising, with active fin stabilizers, washer/dryer, watermaker and VHF/SSB radio. She is powered with electronically injected twin Caterpillar diesels (420 HP), giving the option of speed (17 knots) or an economical 10 knots for extended range. We welcome you aboard! MERLIN Art and Juge Smith Roughwater 41 Merlin is a 41 foot Roughwater trawler. It was built in 1975 and designed by Ed Monk. Since it was purchased by Art Smith in 1999 it has had significant upgrades including a new engine, generator, electronics, refrigeration and fuel tanks. Merlin is a family boat. NEHUSHTAN Dan and Anne Prigmore N2 NARCOSIS Denise and Forrest Petersen NO WEINERS Weiner Family Andrews 44 Mediterranean 38 Jersey 40 ODYSSEY Skip and Susan Kenney Viking 48 Built in 1986, Odyssey is a 48’Viking sportfisher featuring a 2 stateroom 2 head layout with dinette, and she is fully equipped for long range cruising. Expect to see Odyssey at Whites Cove, trolling for billfish, or just anchored for the day at Emerald Bay. As you all know, Odyssey never leaves port without the “Captain” aboard. OFF CALL Bret and Megan Powers OLE MISS Lawson and Helga McClung Hatteras 46 Californian 35 ON THE OTHER LINE Baker and Angelovic Families ChrisCraft 35 On The Other Line, formerly known as HoHum, hailing from Avalon, was purchased in Long Beach in November, 2012 by the Angelovic and Baker families. This vessel is a classic 1973 Chris Craft Sportfisher. She was re-powered in 2008 with twin Turbo Cummins Diesel engines and had been pampered by both of her previous owners. She has classic lines, a fiberglass hull, beautiful teak throughout and a large teak and holly salon. On The Other Line is a perfect combination of family cruiser and fishing machine. She has fished the waters from Mexico to Santa Barbara and is recognized by seasoned boaters in many local yacht clubs. She cruises smoothly at 20 knots and is capable of 30 knots when necessary. Buddy Wilson, her original owner, spared no expense in restoring her. Her brand new genset and inverter make her a great family weekend boat or fishing vessel which can be operated at either of her helm stations and even has a remote steering mechanism so the skipper can pull up to a mooring and secure the lines when alone on the vessel. She is a sturdy seaworthy vessel that will be a permanent fixture at BYC. If you see On The Other Line at the docks, please feel free to come aboard for a cold beer and a few stories. POSH Frank and Pat Vranicar Grand Banks 32 This 1974 Grand Banks 32’ fiberglass classic sedan has been a member of the Vranicar family since 1993. Posh was purchased new by Gordon Atkinson Sr., a Pasadena and Newport Beach traditional haberdasher, and christened Posh. She was resold and renamed by two subsequent owners before we acquired her from Stan Miller Yachts where she had been traded in for a new Grand Banks Eastbay. We renamed her Posh and have had many great days aboard, bay and coastal cruising, including numerous trips to Catalina Island. PROCRASTINATOR PROSPECTOR Jim and Nancy Gurney Bob Hoose Mediterranean 38 Baja 28 PROUD BIRD Steve and Deidre Bird Buddy Davis 38 Proud Bird owners, Captain Steve and First Mate Deidre purchased their 38’ Buddy Davis 1995 Convertible Sportfisher in Vero Beach, Florida. On April 1, 2011 she was loaded on Yacht Path and traversed on her 24 day journey through the Panama Canal and up the Gulf for arrival into Ensenada Mexico on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011 . Proud Bird owners, Steve and Deidre, with licensed Captain Costa Haramas, self-powered her journey up the coast through customs in San Diego Harbor followed by an early morning departure Wednesday, April 27, sailing her into Newport Beach Harbor where she resides. Story goes she was originally ordered by Manual Noriega before he was extradited. As the third proud owner of this “Beautiful Ride On the Ocean” she’s got the Carolina flare 14’3” beam and is only represented with three sister ships. She’s outfitted with twin Detroit Diesels 6-71 TIB, weighs 35,000 pounds and holds 460 gallons of fuel with a fiberglass hull and she cruises at 23 knots. PURA VIDA Michael Toerge and Suzanne Harris Jeanneau 40 A Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40, Pura Vida was built in Les Herbiers, a French town approximately 80 kilometers from the Biscay coastline. She was designed by renowned Naval architect Daniel Andrieu for comfort and performance. She is responsive, balanced and easily sailed shorthanded. “Pura Vida” is a Costa Rican greeting meaning pure life. REEL NOYES Eric and Wendy Noyes Mikelson Sportfisher 50 Reel Noyes is actually the “third” Reel Noyes we have owned. She is a 50’ Mikelson Sportfisher that we purchased this year. We are very excited to continue on our family tradition of cruising to Catalina and offshore fishing throughout Southern California and Northern Baja. She was built in 2001 and is powered with twin Cummins Diesel engines. There are two staterooms forward and a very large flybridge that can accommodate a large group and was one of the things that we found so attractive about this layout. Our children Grace and Jack have grown up on boats and are very excited to get over to Catalina and go fishing! We hope to see you on the water this summer… RELUCTANT RHODES TO NOWHERE Pete and Nancy Tamny Trenton Rhodes J42 Tiara 31 RILEY B David and Barbara Beek Tiara Flybridge 33 Originally named Double Limits, the Riley B started out as a 6 pack charter vessel in Ensenada, Mexico, based at the Coral Hotel and Marina. She was later moved to San Diego where she sat unloved for about a year. We brought her to Newport Harbor in 2006 and gave her much love. She has shown her appreciation ever since by giving us hundreds of wonderful hours around Catalina, Whites Cove and cruising Southern California waters proudly flying the BYC Burgee. She is named after my beautiful daughter, Riley. RIPTIDE Megan Delaney and Mike Bigelow Riviera 36 This 1999 Riviera Pro Tournament Sportfisher, built in Australia, was designed by Aussie marlin fisherman Bob Jones. Based on the original Riviera 36, Riptide features a stretched cockpit, upgraded Cummins 370B diesels, an extra fuel tank, dual bait tanks, cockpit freezer with 160 lb. ice capacity, and other fishing equipment. Riptide cruises at 20 knots and tops out at 28 knots. We bought her in 2008 and enjoy taking her fishing or cruising to Catalina. RISA S/C Bill and Debi Seals Bertram Center Console ROAM Rick Ingold Custom 46 A custom-built 46’ Down East style sedan, Roam features 2 staterooms together with a great salon, galley and dinette areas. Powered by twin 370 HP Cummins, she cruises at 18 knots and tops out at 22 knots. She carries 600 gallons of fuel and provides convenience with capacities for 200 gallons of fresh water and 60 gallons each for grey and black water. Come aboard and see her very nice mahogany interior. SAOIRSE Michele and Patrick McCormack Tiara Express 33 Saoirse (Seer-sha) is a Tiara 3300 Open Express built by S2 Yachts in Holland, MI in 1989. She has given us many hours of pleasure both in the harbor and in Catalina. She is powered by twin 454 Crusaders and comes equipped with a 4.5 kW Westerbeke generator. She has a stateroom forward, the dinette converts to a double berth and the sofa converts to a bunk so she can sleep a lot of folks for her size! With her all-electric galley and head and shower she is the perfect Catalina or bay boat and we can’t wait to spend more time aboard Saoirse this coming summer! Welcome aboard and “Bímis ag imeacht ar rothaí an tsaoil!!” (Let the good times roll!!) $EA-NOTE Scott Schubert SHARMEL Bob and Arleen Stevens SIMPLY GRAND SONCY SONRISA Buz and Pat Lowe John and Dixie Clark S/C Bill and Debi Seals Carver 38 Sea Ray 36 Grand Banks 36 Rhodes Bounty 41 Tollycraft 57 SUNDANCE Commodore Ray and Elizabeth Lewis Ocean Alexander 42 This begins our 10th season with Sundance as the family boat and we all still love her. She is powered by twin Caterpillar 3208’s and cruises at 15 knots. Her Monk design hull can take just about any seas with ease but her favorite routes are between BYC and Catalina or cruising Newport Harbor – all year long! SURLY MERMAID Ali Johnson Tiara Convertible 39 Surly Mermaid is a 2007 Tiara 3900 Convertible powered by twin Cummins QSC 540hp diesel engines; her cruise speed is 22 knots with a top end of 30 knots. Purchased new, SURLY MERMAID has been customized extensively in order to transform her into the ultimate West Coast sportfishing platform. Each year, she competes in numerous fishing tournaments such as the Catalina Classic, Amateur Billfish Classic, Los Pescadores Marlin Derby, Churchmouse Marlin Tourney, Balboa Angling Club events, and BYC events. Surly Mermaid can often be found fishing Catalina and San Clemente Islands for big white sea bass and yellowtail, as well as far offshore for tuna, dorado, swordfish and marlin. The boat’s name, Surly Mermaid, was suggested by the owner’s twin boys after watching the Disney animated movie, Finding Nemo. In the movie, Nemo swims past a boat in Sydney harbor called The Surly Mermaid. The twins thought that was a great name for a boat, and, after much deliberation…the Tiara sportfisher had her moniker. These days, some people mistakenly assume the boat’s name is a reflection of the owner’s disposition. Well, maybe when the fish aren’t biting….Happy Fishing! SWEET THING Tony and Tricia Sanchez Cabo Sportfisher 35 TAKE ME OUT II David and Maryjean Harper Ocean Alexander 52 Take Me Out II is a 2007 Ocean Alexander commissioned by David and Maryjean in 2006.
