February 7, 2015 - Gifted Music School
Welcome, Megan Megan Tandar (9) gave such an
incredible performance at her recent jury
Arthur Houle, Visiting
Professor of Piano:
Technique Tips for
Young & Old Next workshops: February 20
Teacher workshop: 10:30 amnoon
Student workshop: 46 pm
Salt Lake Recital Hall (200 S. 320 E.)
• What is technique?
• Pros and cons of "methods."
• Anatomically relaxed mechanics
in the Preparatory Division that the GMS
faculty unanimously concluded that she
should be immediately accepted into the
Conservatory, the full scholarship
division of GMS. She says:
"I like the piece Sonata K570 by Mozart.
Mozart is my favorite composer. I hate
Chopin etudes. They will be the end of
me. Some of my interests are
geography, history, classical music, and
books. My favourite book is The Giver. In
my spare time, when I am NOT
practicing, I like to play strategy games
on the computer and robotics."
• Technique in the abstract vs. applying
to music (surprising approaches in
standard repertory)
• The dreaded "Schmitt" exercises:
making them fun
• Pischna: Precious or Perilous?
• Alternative fingerings for scales &
arpeggios
• "Blocking" scales & arpeggios
• "Schematic" approach to cadences
• Dramatic chromatics
• Thrilling trilling
• Awesome octaves
• Scales: Why only legato? (Introducing
"spider" fingers!)
Adult Chess Class Our children's chess class has been
such a success that we have decided to
add a chess class for adults to our class
offerings. Taught by Dr. Koji Attwood,
this class will begin on February 23.
Cost: $80.
