REWEEL – PUNE
IWS in collaboration with Welding Research Institute (WRI) and
IWS Pune Centre organised a two day workshop on “Emerging
Learning in thin sheet joining - Resistance welding and MIG
brazing” (REWEEL) at Pune during October 5-6, 2015
REWEEL at Pune, an automotive sector hub was held at the
Fronius Technology Centre at
Chakan, Pune, during 5-6 October
2015.
Pune programme was
sponsored by Fronius India, Pune. In all about 124 delegates (industry,
academia, sponsor, organiser / free delegates, etc.) attended the event at
Pune. The inauguration of the event was done with the leading speakers
lighting Kuthuvilakku. Sri V B Tamboli welcomed the gathering and Sri R. Easwaran gave a brief about
the making of REWEEL. Mr. Schreiber, Mr. Johann, Mr.
Koide spoke on what they proposed to cover. Mr. R. D.
Mate felicitated and Prof. Rupa Bindu proposed a vote of
thanks. Dr Asokkumar conducted the proceedings. The
technical content was quite rich, with Mr. Stefan Schreiber
(German Welding Institute, Duisburg) provided an
excellent insight with practical tips on resistance welding
(spot, seam, projection) as applied by the multinational
automotive giants in Europe, with good videos. He
covered practically all aspects of Resistance Welding - process, equipment,
power sources, process monitoring, testing, multi-sheet joining, variants in
resistance welding, welding of ultra-high strength steels with 1500 MPa
strength, coated steel welding and so on.
Mr. Johann (Fronius International, Austria) delivered the
talk on various advancements in MIG Brazing for the
automotive sector including various upgrades in the Cold
Metal Transfer system of Fronius. Mr. Koide, MD,
Amada Miyachi India Pvt. Ltd, presented a Japanese
insight into the developments in Resistance Welding
equipment. There was also a presentation by Obara
India, another Japanese equipment supplier. Finearc
Systems made a presentation on automation and robotics being used by the
automotive industry, from an Integrators perspective.
WRI made two presentations covering its capabilities
and also case studies on the consultancy carried out by
WRI by Dr. K. Asokkumar and Mrs. A. Santhakumari. The
venue being at the Fronius Demo Centre, all the facilities for demo of the
various advanced CMT process was readily available for actual demonstration. Amada Miyachi had
brought their Resistance Welding equipment, which was also used for demonstration. The feedback
from the automotive sector has been overwhelming about the content of the programme. There were
many discussions continued during lunch and tea time. Mr. Raghavan of Fronius India supported the
REWEEL team at Pune.
REWEEL- CHENNAI
Sequel to Pune, REWEEL was organised at Chennai also in association

Chennai. All the arrangements have
been nicely tied up by the Tiruchy team with support from Fronius and IWS, Chennai Centre and IIT
Madras at the venue, and things went smoothly. The demo was
arranged at Metallurgy lab of IIT, Chennai. M/s MIPALLOY joined with
the demo team to showcase the latest developments in resistance
welding electrodes. The demo team was willing to show as many live
welding trials as was requested by the participants. On observing the
enthusiasm of the delegates, opportunities have been given to the
participants to visit the demo hall in the early morning and also in the
late evening. Many queries were clarified by the eminent speakers even during lunch time. Since there
were many queries the participants were asked to send their queries
through mail to IWS and arrangements have been made to get the
answers from the speakers and send the same to the participants as
post activity of REWEEL. The feedback of the REWEEL has been
encouraging. It was Mr. Sasianand from Fronius India who played a
