Welcome
Dear IAESTE Friends and Supporters,
Welcome to the 2004 IAESTE Annual Review
incorporating the General Secretary’s Report.
It is a great pleasure for me to present my first
Annual Review, not only as General Secretary of
IAESTE, but as the first woman ever to be
elected to this position. I was responsible for
the IAESTE programme in Northern Ireland
from 1989 and as a former teacher of modern
languages felt that IAESTE provided a
wonderful opportunity to develop our local
students, not only professionally, but also in
terms of improving their social and
communication skills and making them more
culturally aware.
The Aims of IAESTE, to exchange students and
to provide them with work experience relevant
to their degree courses, to bring young people,
employers and academics together from the
nations of the world are played out every year
in 85 countries. The results in the short term
are obvious. The students receive traineeships
pertinent to their studies, perceived cultural
barriers are broken down among the many
nationalities that live, work and play together
over a period of 6-12 weeks. Employers receive
bright, high calibre students who can provide
new ideas, or complete a specific project in the
given time and the young people return home
more confident and mature with a better
understanding of themselves, other cultures
and of their own career choices. In the long
term the investments employers have made are
real and far reaching – for these are the
professionals of the future, industrialists,
engineers, and decision makers in their own
countries.
IAESTE is a partnership with employers and
academics – it cannot survive without the
support which in 2003 was made up of 3561
employers and 1396 educational institutions.
Since 1948 when IAESTE was founded, just over
300,000 students have benefited from an
IAESTE placement and with that in mind the
Friends of IAESTE Network (FoIN) is dedicated
to tracing as many IAESTE alumni as possible.

ANNUAL
REVIEW
2004
This is an exciting project with real potential
but requires the support of all our members.
At times world events affect the performance of
our members and co-operating institutions and
2003 was just such a year but we congratulate
those who continued to work hard to ensure as
normal a service as possible in what were often
very difficult circumstances. In spite of a small
decrease in the number of employers offering
traineeships there was a significant increase in
the number of educational institutions who
supported IAESTE in 2003. We would like to
thank you all most sincerely for enabling 4633
students to participate and benefit from an
IAESTE placement in 2003.
IAESTE currently has 93 members and cooperating institutions in 85 countries and since
last year’s Review we welcomed 5 new cooperating institutions to the Association from
Georgia, Guinea, Iraq, Kenya and Macao. In
contrast, we wish to acknowledge the
tremendous achievement of IAESTE Portugal
and IAESTE Japan who this year celebrate 50
and 40 years respectively as members of the
Association.
This year the Annual Review includes not only
the General Secretary’s Annual Report which
summarises the performance of the members
and co-operating institutions during the past
exchange year but also lists the employers and
participating universities who supported
IAESTE during 2003.
In conclusion I would like to thank everyone
who has contributed to this Annual Review and
a very special thanks to all the National and
Local Committees who have worked so hard to
provide a quality service to both customers and
clients throughout the world.

Our Organisation
The International Association for the Exchange
of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is
a confederation of National Committees
representing academic, industrial and student
interests. Each National Committee is
responsible for the administration of the
exchange in its own country.
The Association was founded in January 1948
at Imperial College, London, on the initiative
of the Imperial College Vacation Work
Committee. National organisations of ten
European countries represented at this meeting
became members and Mr. James Newby was
elected General Secretary. The geographical
coverage was soon to spread to most of Europe
and beyond, as new countries were admitted to
membership.
The international body of IAESTE is a nonpolitical, independent, non-governmental
organisation, in operational relationship with
the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and maintains
consultative relationships with the UN
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the
United Nations Industrial Development
Organisation (UNIDO) and the International
Labour Office (ILO).
collects offers from employers willing to receive
students from abroad for a temporary training
and work experience period relevant to the
students’ areas of study, as a complement to
their university or college education. The
offering companies or organisations are
expected to pay students a wage sufficient to
cover their cost of living during the actual
training period.
The offers of training are exchanged with other
members and co-operating institutions on a
reciprocal basis. Through their affiliated
universities and colleges, members and cooperating institutions select qualified students
to meet employers’ requirements as outlined on
the training offer. Details of the selected
candidates are sent to the companies for
approval.
Participation in the IAESTE exchange is open to
bona fide students attending courses at
universities, institutes of technology and
similar institutions of higher education.
For further information about IAESTE please
visit our website www.iaeste.org.
IAESTE is also in contact with the United
Nations Economic Council for Africa (ECA), the
Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the
Organisation of American States (OAS) and the
European Union (EU), as well as with other
educational non-governmental organisations.
The aims of IAESTE
National Secretariats and Committees make up
the membership of the Association. Each year
the Annual Conference brings together the
representatives of these bodies to decide issues
of general policy and with the IAESTE cooperating institutions to carry out the exchange
of offers for training. Prior to the conference,
each member and co-operating institution
It shall promote international understanding and goodwill
amongst the students of all nations irrespective of race,
colour, sex or creed.
2
The Association is an organisation for the exchange of students
at institutions of higher education wishing to obtain technical
experience abroad relative to their studies in the broadest
sense.
The Association operates an exchange programme for the
benefit of students, academic institutions, industrial and other
organisations offering traineeships.

Report of the
General Secretary
This report is a summary of the exchange activities between IAESTE members and cooperating institutions during 2003. The details of these exchanges are presented in the
2003 IAESTE Activity Report published in November 2003. The exchange took place
between 78 members and co-operating institutions from 75 countries and 10 nonmember countries.
The 2003 IAESTE Activity Report contains the
detail on the bilateral exchanges, study fields of
trainees sent and received by each member and cooperating institution, the number of participating
employers and institutions, training periods, age,
nationality and gender of the trainees and other
useful comparative information. It includes detail
on the exchange with non-member countries. The
report also contains a summary of the
administrative procedures, reports from members
TABLE 1 : Total trainees sent and average trainee months
and co-operating institutions on activity as well as
the names of the staff handling the exchange and
the addresses of the National Secretariats. Readers
interested in this report may order a copy from the
IAESTE National Secretariat in their own country or
from the General Secretary.
Exchange Development in 2003
The total number of trainees exchanged in
2003 was 4633, 284 fewer than in 2002.
However 14 members and 11 co-operating
institutions managed to increase their number
of traineeships to incoming students and this
was very encouraging.
Table 1 shows the number of trainees
exchanged in 2003 and compares this with
placements for the previous four years and the
total average trainee months.
Table 2 shows the
training periods for 2003
with 46% of students on
placements of 6-8 weeks
while a further 26% of
students went for a
period of less than 3
months.
TABLE 2 : Training Periods
Table 3 The number of trainees to benefit
from long-term placements represents just over
25% of total placements in 2003. This aspect of
the exchange has been in decline since 1999
(the first year to collect these figures).

Regional Exchange
The number of traineeships filled
by students from non-European
countries accounted for 32.5% of
the number of students sent,
almost unchanged from 2002.
Europe continues to dominate the
exchange. Some 67.5% of all
trainees were sent from EU and
other European countries, and 72%
of all trainees were received in
Europe.
TABLE 4 : Trainees sent and received by continent 2003
Sending and receiving Continent
The EU provides 24.9% of its places to students
from EU member states. The internal exchange
between the Rest of Europe is 25.7%. Within
North and Central America the figure is 16.2%,
while the internal exchange within the other
regions is less than 9%. The smallest number
of participating students comes from Africa and
97% of African students received their
placement in Europe.
The open international exchange is clearly
illustrated by the number of members and cooperating institutions that exchange with each
other. In 2003 each member and co-operating
institution exchanged on average with 17 other
members and co-operating institutions.
Figure 1 shows that 57.5% of IAESTE members
and co-operating institutions exchanged with
more than 11 countries in 2003. Seven
members and co-operating institutions sent
students to 41 or more countries.

Growth of IAESTE
There is great interest in IAESTE throughout the
world and on average 2 new countries per
month contact the General Secretary asking for
information on how to join the Association.
Universities or organisations committed to the
aims of the Association can apply for cooperating institution status and each year the
Advisory Committee review their progress at
their summer meeting. New co-operating
institutions take 3-5 years to become
established and the benefits of this expansion,
reflected in the exchange, become clear after
this period. They are then able to apply for
associate membership and after a minimum of
another 3 years can apply to be full members
with voting rights. Since last year Armenia and
Kazakhstan were accepted as full members
while Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ecuador,

Mongolia and Oman became associate
members. The University of Conakry, Guinea,
NGO “Prometheus-Amirani” Georgia, The
Danish Chamber of Commerce in Iraq, Jomo
Kenyatta University of Agriculture and
Technology, Kenya and the University of
Macao, SAR China were welcomed into the
Association as new co-operating institutions.
Ninety-three members and co-operating
institutions in 85 countries constituted the
membership of IAESTE in January 2004.
The Association continues to grow outside
Europe with increased interest from countries
in South America and Africa and we would be
very keen to expand our membership in these
areas.
5
Reciprocity of the Exchange
The IAESTE exchange programme is based on a
bilateral balanced exchange between members.
Most member countries attempt to maintain a
balance between outgoing and incoming
students but an exact bilateral balance is rarely
possible within any given year. Only long-term
balance is sought. This flexibility is needed to
support the proper allocation of places and the
selection of the appropriate students.
In 2003, 28 members and co-operating
institutions received more students than they
sent abroad and this benefited the rest. In total,
606 work experience places were involved or
13.1% of the total exchange.
It is traditional within IAESTE for members
with a higher Gross National Income per capita
(GNI) to receive more trainees than they send.
Strict reciprocity is not implemented with new
members in the early years which allow those
in developing countries and those from smaller
countries to gather support within their
country in order to develop the exchange.
Countries with a GNI per capita >12,000 US$
provided 87% of these places in 2003.
Profile of the student trainee
Age and gender balance of trainees varies little
from year to year but differs appreciably from
country to country.
Participation by male and female students
compared with previous years (%) is shown in
Table 5
The age of trainees in 2003 ranged from 20 to
28 years with the majority (87%) being 20 to 24
years old. The average age is just under 23 years
old.
Study fields: In 2003 65% of trainees were
students of engineering and technology. The
remaining 35% were divided between the
sciences, 18%; architecture and applied arts,
8%; agriculture, 3% and other fields of study,
6%. These figures are quite stable and change
only by a few percentage points from one year
to the next. (Table 6 and Figure 2)

The first and largest group of engineering
students was itself composed of students from
the major faculties and sub groups. The largest
component was mechanical engineering 21%,
followed by computer science 16%, electrical
engineering 12%, electronic engineering and
telecommunications 9%. The remaining 21%
was distributed over miscellaneous engineering
specialities. For the first time in several years
the number of electronic engineering and
telecommunication placements has increased
and this is a very encouraging sign. There was
also a discernible rise in the number of physics
and biology traineeships on offer during 2003.

Nationality: The majority of students
participating in the IAESTE exchange are
citizens of IAESTE member countries. Some are
from non-member countries and are studying
abroad at educational institutions co-operating
with IAESTE.
In 2003, 230 students with different
nationalities to the sending country received
places on the programme. Of these 42 were
from the following non-member countries:
Bolivia, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Guatemala, Iraq,
Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Korea, Libya, Malaysia,
Mauritania, Moldova, Morocco, Palestine,
Panama, Senegal, Singapore and Vietnam.
Five IAESTE countries exchanged 86 students
directly with non-members countries that
included Algeria, India, Kuwait, Morocco,
Niger, Peru, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

Participating Employers and Educational
Institutions:
In 2003 there was a decrease in the number of
employers who offered traineeships but there
was a significant increase in the number of
participating educational institutions which
reflects the increase in the number of cooperating institutions participating in the
exchange in recent years.
IAESTE is pleased to acknowledge the
continued support of employers and
educational institutions in 2003.

Work experience positions on offer in
2003
The duration of the available positions can be
seen in Tables 1 and 2.
Most of the training takes place in the period
May to September and coincides with the
Northern Hemisphere vacation period. In the
Southern Hemisphere, opportunities are
available between October and April. More
than 47 of the member countries are now in a
position to offer long term training
opportunities and 17 members and cooperating institutions offer training throughout
the year.
The majority of work placements are
exchanged during the Annual Conference in
January on a bilateral basis but thanks to the
development of the IAESTE IntraWeb the
exchange can continue after this meeting. New
and unused offers can be put on the IntraWeb
at any time by members and co-operating
institutions and this ensures that IAESTE can
accommodate student placements and
employer offers as they arise.
Categories of Offers: IAESTE classify
placements as Research and Development (D)
indicating work of a laboratory nature;
Professional (P) is used for professional
activities, practical design work and similar;
Working environment offers (W) indicate work
in the industrial area relevant to the student’s
background and category (X) covers nonspecific offers.
The non-specific (X) offers can be general office
jobs, language offers and similar. In all cases it
is the responsibility of the receiving national
office making the (X) category offers to ensure
that the working conditions are acceptable,
beneficial to the student and in line with the
standards expected of all IAESTE offers.

In 2003 a total of 6684 training places were
reported to be available as follows: Research
and Development (D) 2629, 42%; Professional
(P) 3016, 48.3%; Working Environment (W)
276, 4.4% and Non-Specific (X) 323, 5.2%. The
percentage of offers used as reported by the
members and co-operating institutions by
category of the available offers were (D) 76%,
(P) 74%, (W) 68.4% and (X) 50.56%. (Figure
6)
The bulk of offers are in the Research and
Development and Professional areas and
students favour these training places that are
more in line with academic requirements. In
many instances such training is a required part
of the curriculum. The Working Environment
(W) offers are valued for higher pay and the
opportunities they provide to experience
working conditions in industry in other
countries.
FIGURE 6 : Categories of Offer
Returned offers and cancellations
Based on the figures reported, the number of
lost and unused training offers in 2003
amounted to 2111, just over 31.6% of the offers
received. Employer withdrawals accounted for
49% and student withdrawals were 24%. The
balance unused was 27%.
In 2003 individual figures show that 13
members and co-operating institutions
managed to maintain their total losses below
20% but this needs to improve and a concerted
effort needs to be made by all members and cooperating institutions to improve on this
performance.
IAESTE members must continue to make every
effort to minimise these losses, particularly the
offers that remain unused. Improvements here
would result in the release of additional
available places. This should encourage
members to seek improvements to their
existing practices and to examine their
communication arrangements. Accurate and
timely communications should help reduce
student and employer withdrawals and accurate
matching of the student skills with those
required by the employer would further
contribute to minimising the withdrawal of
offers by employers.
The year round exchange facilitated by the
IAESTE IntraWeb now provides the platform for
the quick and accurate exchange of jobs
between members for new and unused offers
and also nominations for these places. This
must contribute to the effective use of all offers
both new and unused, as they become available
throughout the year.
This continues to be one of our major problem
areas. Despite the efforts made to date to
minimise losses, the number of training places
lost or unused remains unacceptably high.

Conference Report
The 56th IAESTE Annual Conference took place in Vienna, Austria from 17-24 January 2004.
223 delegates, observers and accompanying persons from 72 countries attended the Conference
which was held in the Penta Vienna Renaissance Hotel.
At the opening ceremony the National
Secretary of IAESTE Austria, Ms Monika
Kümmel, invited the Conference Honorary
President, Mr Rolf Kratochvil to address
the delegates. As a former IAESTE General
Secretary from 1968-1974, he was known
to many of the members present and he
had also served in every official role in the
Association. He was Conference
Chairperson in Vienna in 1955, in Haifa in 1965
and in Budapest in 1987. He was also a member
of the Advisory Committee in 1951-52 and
1962-63. He spoke to the delegates about his
times in IAESTE, the growth of the Association
and his hopes for the future of IAESTE.
The guest speaker was Sergio Gardelliano from
the Vienna International Centre of UNIDO. He
spoke of the work of UNIDO and the possible
areas of contact between UNIDO and IAESTE.
The General Secretary then gave his report and
welcomed invited guests from FISITA,
Norsk Hydro, SACE, IAPS and the
Technische Universität Wien.
The delegates and guests were entertained
during the opening ceremony by three
pieces of music played by a quintet from
the Vienna School of Music. Ms Monika
Kümmel then concluded the proceedings
by welcoming everyone to Vienna and wishing
them a successful Conference.
A total of 6290 offers were made available during
the exchange sessions and mentors were
assigned to new member countries and new
delegates to help them throughout the
Conference when necessary. A successful Meet
and Greet session organised by SID ( Seminar on
IAESTE Development) prior to the official
opening ceremony enabled newcomers to
IAESTE to feel welcome and to meet
experienced IAESTE members before the
Conference started in earnest.
During the Conference the IDT (Internet
Development Team) successfully launched
Phase 3 of the IAESTE IntraWeb and were
very pleased to report that nearly 90% of the
Conference participants attended their training
sessions. Mr Nicholas Leonard, the IAESTE
Ombudsman presented his second report to the
members, while Mr Tobias Wittmann, a great

servant over the years to IAESTE, informed the
General Conference that he was standing down
from his position as FoIN (Friends of IAESTE
network) co-ordinator. The General Conference
approved the appointment of Peter Merrild as
the new FoIN co-ordinator and Kim Jensen
continues as the IDT co-ordinator.
The SID co-ordinator, Mrs Pauline Ferguson,
presented her report on the work which
followed the 18th SID which was held in Skopje,
Macedonia, in May 2003. Mr Jeff Lange,
National Secretary, IAESTE United States, was
elected as the SID co-ordinator for 2004.
As required under the IAESTE statutes, Dr Adam
Rylski, National Secretary, IAESTE Poland, retired
as a member of the Advisory Committee, having
completed his term of office. The General
Conference elected Professor Chikaosa
Tanimoto, National Secretary, IAESTE Japan to
the vacant position for the period 2004-2007. Ms
Gabriella Rácz, IAESTE Hungary, was elected to
the Advisory Committee for 2004.
Professor Goran Radnovic, National Secretary,
Serbia & Montenegro was elected as Chairperson
of the 57th Annual Conference to be held in
Cartagena, Colombia from 22-28 January 2005
while Mr Jean-Michel Alaverdov, National
Secretary, IAESTE France was elected as Reserve
Chairperson.
The members then elected Malta as the host
venue for the 58th Annual Conference to be
held from 21-27 January 2006.
IAESTE Austria provided a range of social events
during the conference. Special events included a
dinner at Heurigen “Fuhrgassl-Huber” and a
memorable evening at the Leopoldsberg Castle.
The farewell dinner was sponsored by Mobilkom
Austria and was a celebration of a very well
organised conference and an acknowledgement
of the completion of the third and final term of
office for the General Secretary Jim Reid and a
welcome to the incoming General Secretary
Pauline Ferguson.
The National Secretary of IAESTE Germany and
AC member, Günter Muller-Graetschel, made a
presentation to Jim Reid on behalf of all the
members. He spoke of the contribution which
the outgoing General Secretary had made to
9
IAESTE and thanked him for his dedication to
the Association and for his care and attention to
all its members and co-operating institutions
over the last six years. As the outgoing General
Secretary is somewhat of a thespian in his leisure
time he appreciated the Japanese masks
presented to him by the incoming AC member,
Professor Tanimoto. Jim also
received a number of individual
gifts from delegates. Mr Jeff
Lange, former AC member and
current SID Co-ordinator paid
tribute to Ms Susan Mollon for
her excellent contribution as
meeting secretary and assistant
to Jim Reid and the former GS Professor
Abdallah Sfeir. The General Secretary, Pauline
Ferguson, then thanked IAESTE Austria for their
excellent organisation, hospitality and
friendship during the Conference with special
thanks to Ms Monika Kümmel, National
secretary and Thomas Faltner, the Conference
organiser.
At the final Conference session Ms
Christina Vakomies, National Secretary,
IAESTE UK informed the members of the
sudden death of Professor Henry Cohen,
former Chair of IAESTE UK’s Advisory
Committee. Professor Cohen had been
responsible for IAESTE in the early years of
its development in Imperial College
London and was a true friend to IAESTE.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Professor Dr Mohamed Harajli, National
Secretary, IAESTE Lebanon and Chairperson,
received a presentation from former AC member
Henning Huuse, to acknowledge the excellent
manner in which he had conducted the
Conference sessions.
Professor Pulat Pulatov
NS Tajikistan presented
the former General
Secretary with a

GC 2004: My New Experience
BY MARYAM FARAHANI SECRETARY OF THE IAESTE COMMITTEE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEHRAN
In 2002 the University of Tehran joined the
International Association for the Exchange of
Students for Technical Experience as a new cooperating institution. Simultaneously, I started
to work as the Secretary of the Committee.
Although the work seemed to be timeconsuming and required a person with too
much energy and concentration, I found it
really interesting to be involved in an
international organisation. Besides increasing
my knowledge, I could learn many new aspects
of life through this worldwide activity. I
became familiar with different nations by
reading about various countries. In summer
2003 we received three trainees from Europe
whose presence in our first year of membership
provided us with lifelong memories.
In January 2004 I had the great opportunity of
participating in the 56th IAESTE Annual
Conference, which was held in Vienna. It could
be mentioned as one of my life’s best
experiences. The Conference was much more
than an ordinary seminar. I took part in the
Meet and Greet session the very first night where
I met new members of IAESTE, and the new
General Secretary Ms. Pauline Ferguson, then the
opening ceremony, the exchange sessions, the
conference sessions, the international party, and
the social programme which were all full of nice
incidents. Through the exchange sessions I had
the chance to meet those people with whom I
had been acquainted through e mails during the
two years of my work in IAESTE.
Thanks to the efforts and co-operation of all
our committee members; executive and
10
scientific, the support of the University of
Tehran, other universities and companies, we
were able to increase our offers from 20 in 2003
to 100 in 2004. During the seven days of our
stay in Vienna, we exchanged 43 offers with
different countries including among others
Greece, Germany, Brazil, China, UK, Oman,
Switzerland, Finland and Sweden.
As well as attending the very well organised
Conference, I had the chance to visit Vienna’s
Albertina, Stadtsoper, Stephansdom,
Karlskirche, and lots of other beautiful places. I
made many new friends from different IAESTE
committees, and learned new methods of
working during the conference sessions. The
important thing for me was that this
conference was an exchange of knowledge and
viewpoints as well as information sharing on
culture and experience.
I hope that IAESTE Iran at the University of
Tehran continues to be a successful cooperating institution of IAESTE for many
years, and I hope that we can form a
National Committee in the near future.
Maryam Farahani and
Dr Shekarchizadeh,

Session at the Vienna
General Conference
I would like to thank Mr. James E. Reid;
previous GS, Dr. Gheitanchi; one of my
university professors, Dr. Shekarchizadeh;
person responsible for IAESTE in the
University of Tehran, Dr. Jabbehdar; the Head
of our scientific committee, and Mr. Alizadeh,
our committee advisor, and all those who made
this journey to GC 2004 a memory that I will

FEI and IAESTE
10 Years Broadening Horizons
PROF RIVANA BASSO MARINO
FEI University Centre is devoted to the
education of administrators, computer
scientists, and engineers in different areas such
as construction, electronics, computing,
telecommunications, mechanics, automotive
engineering, materials, production, chemistry

work market.
FEI was established under the vision and
enterprising spirit of the Jesuit priest Father
Roberto Saboia de Medeiros, who foresaw the
great technological development yet to come in
Brazil in the 40’s and beyond. So in 1941 he
founded Brazil’s first

level and quality of its courses. Hence, there is
a concern to establish partnerships and bonds
besides developing research and studies in
different areas.
For that reason, FEI has taken part in the
IAESTE programme for ten years, resulting in a
rich and valuable exchange of experiences.
Besides broadening the academic and cultural
views of more than 60 students that went
abroad through IAESTE, the students brought
back with them and to our schools the
outcome of this experience in different
countries. On the other hand, there is the
valuable contribution provided by the foreign
students that are received in our laboratories
among our students, sharing technical
knowledge and promoting cultural exchange.
In the globalised world in which we live, this
exchange of experiences, added to the practice
of the use of other languages is central to the
integration of our students in the work market.
In recognition of the importance of this
partnership, a new work post is being opened
in our campus from 2004 onwards for foreign
interns, allowing for greater opportunities of
interaction among students of different
cultures.
We are grateful to IAESTE and Central de
Intercâmbio for the IAESTE International Award
which we received on April 12, and for the
priceless contribution to the development of
our students.

IAESTE at work
in Northern Ireland
Seagoe Technologies Limited is a manufacturing
company based in Northern Ireland, selling
products to many countries around the world.
Its most important export markets are in Spain
and Portugal.
Our involvement with IAESTE began in 2002
and we now host a student every summer. To
date we have had the pleasure of welcoming
two engineering students from Spain to spend
time at our main facility in Portadown.
During their time with us they have been given
tasks and projects which have added real value
to our organisation. They themselves gained
first hand experience of a fast-moving
production engineering environment and were
able to learn about modern manufacturing
techniques. In addition, the exchange of
language and culture was of great benefit to
both the students and Seagoe’s staff.
On a number of occasions the students were
able to get actively involved in customer
liaison, helping to organise group visits to
Ireland and dealing with technical and
commercial issues which arise from time to
time.
Seagoe Technologies is committed to the
IAESTE programme. It has provided real
benefits to the company and helps to provide
greater understanding between nations,
cultures, companies and individuals.

The Economics Institute (formerly the Institute
for Industrial Economics) is the leading
national institution specialising in
macroeconomic research in the economy and
some of its branches (such as: machinery and
equipment, metal and steel, chemicals, plastics
and rubber, pharmaceutical industry, trading,
construction materials, paper products, textiles,
utilities, electrical manufacturing industry,
transportation, building industry, mining and
power industry), as well as research in
enterprise development and organisation. It
was established almost sixty years ago, pursuant
to the decision of the then republican
government. Today, it is in private ownership.
The Economics Institute employs (on a full or
part-time basis) about a hundred consultants experts in various fields: economists, lawyers,
engineers, mathematicians, etc. We have been
co-operating with IAESTE for twenty five years,
receiving foreign students - mostly engineering
students who specialise in industrial
engineering - for practical training, thus
enabling them to take part in the preparation
of our projects relating to portfolio
development and organisational changes in
Serbian enterprises of a different size and
activity.
By coincidence, our guest students have so far
been from various countries, mostly from
Europe (Germany, Portugal, Sweden, Malta,
Tajikistan, etc.). We, from the Economics
12
Institute, have always regarded this
student exchange as a chance to meet
brilliant young people and, through
them, get acquainted with the specific
features of their countries. Apart from
including them in the preparation of our
projects, we have also tried to acquaint
our guests with Serbia’s national and
cultural riches and its people (mostly people of
the same age) and customs, in addition to all
the other things that help us to strengthen
bonds among people and nations. We have
especially encouraged their contacts after
working hours (see picture) and on weekends.
Their short stay at the Economics Institute has
been regarded as refreshment in our and their
daily lives and work. Therefore, it is no wonder
that almost one-third of our “trainees” contact
us later on, to inform us of important events
in their lives. We consider this to be an
especially valuable aspect of the IAESTE student
exchange and therefore we cherish it
persistently. We did not interrupt it even
during the most difficult times for our country,
in the last decade of the 20th century. We
sincerely hope that our co-operation with
IAESTE Serbia and Montenegro will continue
and that we shall have an opportunity to host
ambitious and capable foreign students like
before.

From Sweden to Tajikistan
BY BJÖRN PAULSSON
When I applied for the IAESTE exchange in
Tajikistan, this part of the world was a white
spot for me. The reasons for applying for this
offer were: the possibility to improve my
Russian, a chance to practice computer science
and most importantly - to visit a region I
hardly knew anything about.
First lecture at IREX
After a one-day stop in Dushanbe, the capital of
Tajikistan, I finally landed in Khujand in the
north of the country. Representatives from the
local committee met me at the airport. My
host buddy Nosirkhon took me to his family in
Chkalovsk where I was going to stay while in
Tajikistan. I felt very comfortable at once
and I was immediately counted as one of
the family.
The first few days I got acquainted with
the local IAESTE office and IREX, where I
was going to work, teaching Internet
Technology. The local committee was
really friendly and everyone I met tried to help
me as best they could.
My work at IREX was flexible and it was pretty
much up to me to plan everything. I had
classes in HTML, dynamic web pages and data
communication. I also held a lecture about
Sweden. This was very interesting since I got
the chance to see that we are quite similar
despite the big differences in background and
cultural traditions. The group I taught consisted
mostly of students but also some other people
attended. Many of them came there even
though they had summer holidays or a long
journey to get there.
The local IAESTE committee had a lot of
cultural and social arrangements for us trainees.
This was also the best chance to ask all the
questions I had about how young people live in
Tajikistan. While I was
there we visited the
Kairrakum Sea, the biggest
lake in Tajikistan, and
Shakhristan, which was a
beautiful place in the
mountains. We played
soccer at the same altitude A lake in Shakhristan, Northern
as the highest mountain
Tajikistan
in Sweden!
The family I lived in was a big source of
information about Tajik traditions and living.
Many families live in a mixture of old and new
traditions. Since no special arrangements were
made for me, I ate the same food as the family
and had the chance to taste many specialties,
like the national dish plov. Tea is essential as a
part of daily life and
there are different teas for
different occasions.
Tajikistan itself is a
mixture of Muslim, Tajik
and Russian culture and
tradition. People can be
seen in the streets dressed
The grandmother’s birthday party
in traditional Tajik
dresses walking next to people in modern
western clothes. Since Tajikistan was a part of
the Soviet Union, Russian influence is still very
strong. Most people speak two languages
fluently: Russian and Tajik. The Tajik language
is related to Farsi, which is spoken in Iran.
People in Tajikistan are very friendly and when
I left my traineeship I also left good friends
whom I would like to meet again, hopefully in
Tajikistan.
From Finland to Uruguay
While thinking about my options about
what to do in the spring-term 2004, I
stumbled across the opportunity to go to
Montevideo, Uruguay, through IAESTE.
I did not hesitate even for a second before
sending in the application and you can
imagine the excitement I felt when I
finally got a positive answer.
It did not only mean an opportunity to work in
a field closely related to my studies, but also an
opportunity to familiarise myself with a totally
new continent and language.
As a student of mechanical engineering, I
worked in the technical department of the
company, Ing. Ulises Puig & Cia, S.A and this
was a great experience. I participated in many
projects and my assignments included thermal
balances-calculation, air ducts calculation and
design and pipe design. During my first weeks I
familiarised myself with the Carrier Technical
Development Program, which gave me a good
basis for the work. The work itself was not the
only good thing at the office though. The
people were great and I never went to work
reluctantly.
When I first found out that I was the only
IAESTE trainee in Uruguay at that time, I was
slightly worried, but I soon realized that I was
really lucky. I was actually forced to interact
only with local people and that gave me so
much more than being just with other fellowEuropeans.
I will always be grateful for the opportunity
given to me by IAESTE, which not only
contributed to my work experience, but also
opened up my eyes to a new culture.

Anniversary
Congratulations
IAESTE Portugal Celebrating its Golden Jubilee
In 1954 Portugal was elected as an Associate
member of IAESTE at the General Conference
in Vienna, where the founding National
Committee was represented by the late
Professor Correia de Barros. Since that date it
has been possible for Portugal to exchange
every year, without any interruption, students
of higher education for training abroad through
IAESTE. Professor Bernardo Herold was National
Secretary from 1965 to 2003. For the first 30
years from 1954, IAESTE was, together with
AIESEC, the only international exchange
programme open to university students from
Portugal. Before Portugal joined the European
Community, and before becoming a democratic
state, this was a unique opportunity for
Portuguese students to spend a period of
training in a foreign country during their
undergraduate studies. In spite of having
involved only a small number of students
(between 20 and 60) every year, the
consequences of the existence of this
programme were enormous. Many of the
students, who had been selected among many
candidates based solely on academic merit and
language skills, became in their later life key
figures in industry and public service. They all
agree that training abroad with IAESTE
dramatically changed their outlook on science,
engineering and culture at large, and thus
helped them to contribute successfully towards
the modernisation of the country. A more
detailed history of IAESTE Portugal can be
found in the IAESTE Annual Review 2003,
pages 17 to 18.
“Bernardo’s dedication to IAESTE will be
unsurpassable. I doubt that I will be able to
dedicate as many years as he did. I can only
promise to do the best I can, as National
Secretary.
IAESTE Portugal still has a long way to go.
There are many things that need to be done,
but with willingness, our objectives will be met.

IAESTE Japan : 40th Anniversary Year
It was in the Spring of 1963 that the
Engineering Student Friendship Association of
the University of Tokyo received an official letter
of invitation to the IAESTE organisation from
the Headquarters of IAESTE International in
Bonn. Through consultation with the Ministry
of Education, four leading universities, namely
the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of
Technology, the Waseda and Keio Universities in
the Tokyo Area formed the core of IAESTE Japan,
and Japan was accepted as an Associate member
at the Lucerne GC in January 1964. Three more
universities in the Osaka Area also joined - the
Osaka, Kyoto, and Doshisha Universities. Since
1965 these seven universities have played an
important role as core institutions.
Japan reached its 40th Anniversary in 2004. By
January 2004 we had successfully exchanged
5,500 students with the help of 18 local
universities and more than 400 companies.
14
IAESTE Japan was registered as a legal body in
the Ministry of Education in 1982. In the
beginning the management of IAESTE activities
was through students’ efforts, which were
supported by distinguished executives such as
Masaru Ibuka, Soichiro Honda and Konosuke
Matushita to name but a few. They were the
driving force of Japanese industries as founders
of SONY, HONDA, and PANASONIC companies
respectively.
Based on the energetic contribution of
consecutive National Secretaries IAESTE Japan
has been kept in good shape up to today. The
National Committee is very thankful to Messrs.
K.Ozawa, H.Ishiwatari, Y.Yasoshima, K.Ohta,
D.Takahashi, H.Fujimura, H.Ikeda, M.Hirano,

Since 2002 we have organized the IAESTE
Global Environment Forum every summer.
The objective of this forum is as follows: Since
the foundation of IAESTE in 1948 IAESTE has
exchanged more than 300,000 students from
over 80 countries worldwide. The main aim of
IAESTE activities is to provide opportunities to
students from a scientific/technical background
to better understand foreign countries through
a practical training/internship.
Every summer IAESTE Japan receives 70 - 90
international students as IAESTE trainees who
work at Japanese industries in various
engineering/scientific fields. This summer Japan
will organize the third Forum to be held at
Kiyosato Resort Area (1600m) which faces
Mount Fuji and the beautiful South Japan Alps
from 13-18 August. Several professors and
experts in economics are invited as well as
those in engineering, and they will provide
brief comments so as to stimulate discussion.
The Forum is really an informal and casual
meeting. Music, movies, sports, and campfire
are available. Instructors are active Directors of
IAESTE Japan. Prof. Shinohara serves as a
consultant for the Cabinet of Japan, Mr.Hirano
is an executive director of Nishimatsu
Construction Company as well as the National
Representative to the World Road Federation,
and Prof.Tanimoto is the President of the
International Commission on the Preservation
of World Stone Heritages for ISRM
(International Society for Rock Mechanics) and
well known through his contributions to the
Great Sphinx in Egypt and Dunhuang Caves in
China. Their observations in both social and
natural sciences are very much related with
global environmental issues.
Hopefully in the near future, IAESTE friends
will join the World Economy Forum and help
strive for real and steady peace in the world.

IAESTE Malta : 20 Years Later
IAESTE Malta became a full member in 1984,
and this is therefore our 20th anniversary.
IAESTE Malta is a student-run committee, and
has been so ever since it was born locally. Our
commitment to be a student-run service for the
students has been unwavering ever since.
Throughout these twenty years IAESTE Malta
has strived to give the best possible opportunity
for students to work abroad, and gain
invaluable work experience. This is especially
important in today’s world where experience is
very highly valued by prospective employers
when selecting candidates for a job. In Malta
the student population is always on the
increase and so students who have gained
experience through a traineeship abroad are
given that extra edge when joining the
workforce.
During these past years Malta has consistently
been at the top of the exchange list in relation
to population size and number of students sent,
a fact of which we are proud. IAESTE Malta
exchanges an average of 35 jobs per year, which
is high compared to our population of only
400,000. Being a small island however, makes

us a very close community, a fact which is
always noted by the students who come to
Malta for their traineeships.
IAESTE Malta has always made every effort to
try and make the students’ stay as enjoyable
and fruitful as possible. During our Summer
Reception programme a number of events are
always organised. Barbecues on the beach are
always a must, as is a weekend trip to the
smaller sister island of Gozo. Trips to nearby
Sicily, which is only 3 hours away by
catamaran, have also been organised. Cultural
visits to museums and the Neolithic temples,
the world’s oldest free-standing buildings in the
world, are also a regular feature.
Since IAESTE Malta became a full member, the
committee members have tried to integrate
themselves into the international IAESTE scene
as much as possible too. IAESTE Malta has
attended every GC since it became a member,
except for one. In 1999, IAESTE Malta was host
to a very successful JUMP seminar, (a training
and motivation seminar), and the students who
attended still speak of it with fond memories.
15
IAESTE Malta has also been involved in a
number of twinnings, the latest one being with
the local committee of Bergen, Norway in
February 2002.
2004 has also been a very important year for
IAESTE Malta, with our country being chosen
as the venue for the General Conference in
2006. This of course will be a great honour for
our committee, and we will do our utmost to
make the GC 2006 as memorable as possible.
In conclusion I would like to thank all the
member countries and co-operating institutions
who have helped in any way during these past
twenty years. I would also like to thank all the
past committee members of our National
Committee, without whom obviously IAESTE
Malta would not have
survived. And finally
I would like to thank
all those countries
who have exchanged
with us over these
years, so that IAESTE
Malta can continue to
be the most successful

IAESTE Ukraine : A Decade of Exchange
Like many other countries which were
embodied in the former USSR, Ukraine became
independent in 1991. So much has changed in
our country since then. And one of the logical
consequences of that historical turning point
for our country was the creation of IAESTE
Ukraine. It became possible just three years
after the proclamation of independence, in
1994.
So we are already 10 years old.
What has changed during the years of our
activity?
First of all the subject matter of practice has
changed. Practice connected with physical
labour has turned into one filled with
intellectual power. A traineeship nowadays
comprises an exchange of the latest knowledge
and achievements.
On the other hand modern civilization
attributes, such as television, satellite means of
communication, and the global internet
network make this kind of exchange in a
matter of seconds. But a human being is a
social creature and that is IAESTE, which meets
the essential demand of Homo Sapiens for
communication!
Meetings, exchange of opinions, having
disputes, setting and solving problems together,
presentation of the trainee’s country in order to
create a better relationship and understanding
are some of the numerous tasks of IAESTE
Ukraine. By owning an idea you seem to be
well-off. And it is true. But after you exchange
ideas you become twice as rich as before.
During our 10-year experience we have
understood the truth that knowledge through
exchange becomes even more effective if it is
backed up with cultural exchange.
Coming into the country, meeting its people,
traditions, and cultural heritage you open a
16
new world, broaden your outlook, and make
new friends.
IAESTE Ukraine has some rich experiences in
both technical-scientific and cultural kinds of
exchange.

our country find a variety of landscapes from
the Crimean Steppes and semi-tropics, to the
picturesque and original world of the
Carpathian mountains, while impressed by the
hospitality and good nature of the Ukrainians
and finally the delicious healthy Ukrainian
cuisine.
Ukraine has a lot to offer everybody who comes
to our country. We are open for the exchange.
We are ready to make your stay here
unforgettable and fruitful. IAESTE Ukraine has
got potential!
During the years of our existence we have
accepted more than 600 trainees from almost
all countries of the world. We are proud that
their memories, which you can read in our
magazine IAESTE Ukraine Student, prove all
that is mentioned above.
We are a worthy part of the global IAESTE
team. We are looking back with pride yet we
are optimistic and hopeful about the future.
We are only 10 years old!
We would like to express our most sincere
gratitude to Professor Abdallah Sfeir (IAESTE GS

IAESTE F.Y.R. Macedonia :
10th Anniversary Celebrations
IAESTE Macedonia was accepted as a full
member at the IAESTE General Conference held
in Mexico City in 1994.
In 1996 on the initiative of the University of
Bitola a new local committee was formed in
Bitola.
Today IAESTE Macedonia is comprised of two
local committees one in Skopje, at the
University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” and one
in Bitola, at the University of “Ss. Kliment
Ohridski”.
IAESTE Macedonia is a student-run committee
with over 80 active members and more in the
KIP - Club of IAESTE Friends, alumni network.
The National Committee is made up of the
National Secretary and people responsible for
finance, marketing and outgoing and incoming
students. This structure is also followed in the
local committee boards.
Throughout these years IAESTE Macedonia has
organised a lot of international events that
animate the international spirit and have
resulted in successful co-operation. We’ll
mention the TWIN meeting with LC Zurich, LC
Tampere, IAESTE Austria, and LC Trondheim...
Members of
IAESTE Macedonia
In 1998 an International seminar for training
and motivation JUMP ’98 was held in
September in Ohrid. At the time it was
definitely the biggest event ever organised by
IAESTE Macedonia, with around 40
participants from all corners of the world.
In 2003 IAESTE Macedonia was the host of
the 18th Seminar on IAESTE Development
held in Skopje. 57 representatives
participated in the seminar from 17 IAESTE
committees. This was a great honour for
IAESTE Macedonia.
As well as its activities in the International
Association, IAESTE Macedonia aims to bring
news and quality of international education
close to the Macedonian students, aware that
IAESTE as an idea is the bridge that connects
education with the world of work.
Learning from the international experience
about the usefulness of seminars, in May
1997 IAESTE Macedonia held its first seminar
for the training, motivation and education of
new members, a wonderful tradition that is
being kept by our National Committee.
IAESTE Macedonia is also active in debates
and programmes regarding the education
system in Macedonia and its youth policy.
Above all the exchange process is the main
concern of our committee. Starting with only
5 traineeships, our numbers have multiplied
in the past few years. The average number of
traineeships per year is 60 with a duration of
6 - 8 weeks. Most of our placements come
from companies and a few from universities.
As we realise that we remain an unknown
country for the rest of the world we focus our
activities in organising an unforgettable
Summer Reception. Our members take full
care of the exchange students - reception on
their arrival, introducing them to their
employers, planning weekend tours, all in all
presenting the life of their Macedonian
colleagues, our country and tradition.
Investing in the quality of traineeships, well
organised fun during the Summer Reception
programme and educational seminars remain
our goals since we all carry a suitcase with
unforgettable memories of a traineeship,
seminar and conference that enriched our
lives, from an experience called IAESTE.

Welcome to IAESTE
IAESTE Netherlands moves to Nuffic
Since the foundation of IAESTE in 1948 until
last year, the National Secretariat of its Dutch
branch had been located within the university
in Delft. But in the spring of 2003 Nuffic and
the Delft University of Technology agreed that
in light of the purpose and activities of the two
organisations, the National Secretariat of
IAESTE would be more at home within Nuffic,
in The Hague. Nuffic’s full name is Netherlands

Higher Education. IAESTE Secretariats are
situated within National organisations of this
type in many countries. In the UK the IAESTE
office is part of the British Council, for
example. In Germany the host organisation is
DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer

for International Mobility), and in Sweden it is
IPO (International Programme Office).

1994, was succeeded by Olga Marschal.
Olga Marschal and Heleen Ravenhorst are
together responsible for the IAESTE office in
the Netherlands. Both work part-time;
nevertheless, the office is open five days a
week. Both are already enjoying their
interaction with IAESTE colleagues.
The IAESTE reins were officially handed over to

system. However after the trauma of moving
the office three times within four months, they
are all pleased that things are now settling
down and we hope to provide an even better
service than before.
Jacki O’Connor
National Secretary IAESTE Australia
Also, because of our gradual growth, we are
now able to employ someone for 2 half days
per week. From over 50 applicants we have
selected Juliet Eardley to help us and we are
delighted to welcome her too.
As well as this IAESTE Australia now has a new
address within Swinburne and we are now
housed on the 9th floor of the Business Arts
building which has just been completely
refurbished. So Karen, Juliet and Jacki are
getting used to a new and cheerful colour
scheme which includes grey, magenta and
yellow and are doing a special course to learn
how to drive the new computerised telephone

IAESTE South Africa
IAESTE South Africa moved at the
end of 2003 to its new home: The
University of Pretoria. The transfer
process brought about some
interesting and challenging prospects,
and at last we are starting to settle in.
All of us were new to the IAESTE
world and had to learn all about this
interesting Association in very little
Photo taken in sunny South Africa early in
March 2004 at the University of Pretoria.
Front from left: Kathrin Kohler (student from
Switzerland), Sytze Harkema (student from

Back from left: Jari Roivainen (student from

and Computer Engineering Department Representative),

time. I’d say we are only now starting to
become familiar with all the ways and
procedures. Personally I view this transfer as
one of the best things that could happen to
IAESTE SA as the University of Pretoria will be
able to provide stability and continuity, two
properties that IAESTE SA have not experienced
for a very long time. Furthermore the
international interest in South Africa is on the
rise and tertiary institutions in South Africa are
aiming for international recognition. This
relationship can drastically open opportunities
for IAESTE SA. After these few months we are
doing well and are very optimistic to see what
the future of IAESTE SA will bring in terms of
increased exchanges, involvement of local
students and employers.
Jacqueline Morkel

A Placement in South Africa
Alistair McKendrick : WSP Consulting Engineers, Johannesburg, RSA
On arrival at Johannesburg airport, I was waved
straight though Immigration without so much
of a glance at my hard fought permit, and then
picked up my baggage and strode into the
arrivals hall to search for my name on one of
the placards that were dotted amongst the
crowd. With a sinking feeling developing in my
stomach, I soon realised that my welcoming
committee wasn’t in attendance, so after a
coffee and piece of cake to celebrate the fact
that the day was my 21st birthday, I began to
assess my position.
Alistair on top of Table
Mountain, Cape Town
IAESTE
A quick re-read of the trainee’s guidance from
IAESTE suggested that although rare, my
situation was far from being a reason to book a
flight back! I took out my carefully prepared list
of emergency numbers and then searched for a
payphone. The sinking feeling that had just
begun to subside began to deepen once more
when I slowly realised the
numbers I had for IAESTE South
Africa and WSP were office
numbers so not likely to be of
much use on a Sunday. On
reflection I supposed that this
could mean that I might not be
expected to work weekends! It was
then that I found out that Doug
Kennaugh, my contact at WSP,
had included his mobile number
as part of his digital signature on
one e-mail. I made the call and
after a brief but welcoming conversation with
Doug, I knew my placement was turning a
corner and I once more began to really look
forward to the next 8 weeks.
ANNUAL
REVIEW
2004
The first week was with WSP was with IT
(Information Technology) services and I spent
the time work shadowing one of the
consultants on site visits all over Johannesburg.
One aspect I was very pleased about was that
she (unprompted) always took the time to
explain every part of the job, and this actually
became a feature of all my contact with my
colleagues at WSP.
The next 3 weeks were with the Mechanical
Services Department, where the work was
obviously much more closely related to my
degree subjects. The specific area I spent time
in was Air Conditioning and after a few more
site-visits I was offered the chance to complete
a significant part of a contract that the
company had won. The project was to design
the air-conditioning system for a planned
domestic terminal at a major African airport.
Although daunting, it was the perfect
opportunity to complete a major piece of work
for the company.
The last two weeks were spent in the Electrical
and Industrial Services Departments, and
although the work was different, it was just as
interesting. The chance to accompany a project
team to a platinum mine a few hours north of
Johannesburg, was an incredible opportunity to
see how industry can survive and prosper in
the most remote surroundings.
As I had a company car throughout the
placement, I was keen to take advantage of the
opportunity to travel around and see the area.
My first contact with IAESTE South Africa came
in week one, and I was given the opportunity
19
very early on to meet the other placement
students at a party in Pretoria. We all became
friends quickly and we spent almost every
weekend exploring the Gauteng region around
Johannesburg and beyond. Since we had
enjoyed travelling around at the weekends so
much, myself and another IAESTE student
(from Ireland) decided to postpone our return
flights and spend 2 weeks exploring Cape Town
and the famous Garden Route up towards
Durban. This was an amazing fortnight, and
looking back, it is hard to see how we managed
to fit everything in during 14 days, including a
range of new experiences, not least of which
were scuba diving and bungee-jumping!
My time in South Africa not only provided a
perfect opportunity to apply some of my
technical knowledge but also really encouraged
me to seek a possible career in consultancy. I
also enjoyed the amazing chance to explore a
country and culture that in some ways is so
similar to ours, yet is also remarkably different.
Finding this aspect so rewarding, I now feel
confident travelling or working abroad for any
length of time and have demonstrated that
initial set-backs can be overcome. It is the
combination of all the above that explains why
I consider myself so fortunate to have been part
of IAESTE and taken advantage of the unique
opportunities it affords to all its participants.
19th Seminar on IAESTE Development : April 22-25, 2004
Tunis, Tunisia - SID Report
IAESTE International convened its 19th
Seminar on IAESTE Development on April 2225, 2004 in Tunis, Tunisia. This marked the
first SID conference to be held in Africa and in
an Arab country.
SID serves as a means to bring together IAESTE
members and co-operating institutions to
discuss issues of best practices, administration,
organisational advancement and development.
Unlike the Annual Conference, which focuses
on the exchange of internships, SID allows
delegates to come together and focus on the
development and improvement of IAESTE as an
international organisation. Work groups work
on specific tasks requested by the previous
General Conference. The resulting work from
the work groups is refined over the year into
recommendations that go back to the General
Conference for official voting and
implementation.
The conference was held at the El Mouradi
Hotel Africa, Tunis and at the opening
reception participants were welcomed by Mehdi
Lamloum, the Organizing Committee President
of IAESTE Tunisia. Further remarks were made
by Mr. Jalel Ezzine, Vice President for the
National School of Engineering and by the
National Secretary of IAESTE Tunisia Mr Tahar
Friaa. Mr. Ezzine expressed his sincere welcome
and appreciation for the hard work of the
organising committee. Pauline Ferguson,
General Secretary of IAESTE joined SID Coordinator, Jeff Lange, IAESTE United States in
welcoming participants from around the world.
This year, 58 delegates were in attendance from
25 countries including 11 National Secretaries.
The work at SID is broken down into four
working groups led by work group co-ordinators.
The pace of the SID is extremely fast. The
20
meeting takes place over four days and is results
oriented. The conference convenes an opening
plenary to discuss work done since the last SID
and the work to be tackled by this year’s SID.
Work groups present their results at a group fair
held on Saturday. The group fair is a poster
session that allows work groups to post their
results and gather feedback from those
participants outside the work group. Groups
then present their findings and results to the
closing plenary. The venue for the next SID and
the SID Co-ordinator are then nominated.
However, SID is not only work. Conference
attendees spend time learning about the culture
of their host country and get to see some sights
too. On Friday evening, delegates were invited
to a Tunisian cultural evening held at a
restaurant in the ancient Medina in Tunis. On
Saturday, participants were treated to a tour of
historical Carthage and the seaside suburb of
Sidi Bou Said just north of Tunis. SID also gives
everyone the chance to share their own culture
at the National Evening when delegates share
food and drink from their own country along
with cultural dress and dances.
The 19th SID was an overwhelming success. A
special thank you to IAESTE Tunisia for their
hard work in putting together this year’s SID.
Mr Jeff Lange SID Co-ordinator

SUPPORT SERVICES TO IAESTE
Seminar on IAESTE Development (SID)
SID serves as a means to bring together IAESTE members and co- operating
institutions to discuss issues of best practices, administration, organizational
advancement and development. Unlike the Annual Conference, which
focuses on the exchange of internships, SID provides an opportunity for
delegates from countries to come together and focus on the development
and improvement of IAESTE as an international organization. Work groups
on specific tasks requested by the General Conference sessions from the
previous January provide a forum for debate. The resulting work from the Jeff Lange
work groups are refined over the year into recommendations that go back SID Co-ordinator
to the General Conference for official voting and implementation.
Internet Development Team (IDT)
The IDT, Internet Development Team, was founded in Copenhagen in
1998 by volunteers from five different countries, with the goal to deliver
IT services to IAESTE.
The services include anything which the organization requests, such as
web services and e-mail services. The web services include a public website,
www.iaeste.org and a private website. The IDT maintains the public Internet
pages which provide information on IAESTE and links to all members Kim Jenson
countries’ home pages and contact details.

Friends of IAESTE Network (FoIN)
More than 300.000 students have been exchanged for technical experience
since the foundation of the Association in 1948. Where are all these
people now, what are they doing and how has IAESTE influenced their
career and personal life? This is the kind of information that the international
IAESTE alumni organization Friends of IAESTE Network is collecting and
sharing with the members.

Germany in 1963
Members of the Friends of IAESTE Network receive newsletters about
IAESTE activities, news from other members and reports from students Peter Merrild
who have been on IAESTE traineeships. A search function also helps FoIN Co-ordinator
members to locate the friends they have made through
IAESTE.
The network has now more than 7000 members and the
number is increasing by several hundreds every year.
For IAESTE it is important to keep in touch with our
alumni to develop the organization and generate more
placements.

The IAESTE Ombudsman
The post of Ombudsman was created by a decision of the 2001 General
Conference of IAESTE held in Durban, South Africa. The Ombudsman is
an independent person, to whom students can report complaints about
unfair treatment, with the aim of arriving at a fair settlement. The Ombudsman
reports to the General Conference each year about all incidents reported
to him from students. He also proposes measures to prevent similar
incidents in future.
Nicholas Leonard, the retired National Secretary of IAESTE Ireland, is the
first IAESTE Ombudsman.
For further information on the Ombudsman
