Before the Storm — Painting Atmosphere
uwith
Rae Smith, PSA Master
October 21, 2012
March 2-3, 2013
Be inspired and informed by the use of photograph
references, landscape, still life, portrait or nature
study, while avoiding being dependent upon the
photographic image. The two class sessions will be
York City Nocturnes
uNew
with Janet A. Cook, PSA
This two day workshop will be a hands-on experience where artists can explore pastels using techniques Somers has learned through his career. “Dry
washes,” adding and removing color, using pastels
as a wet medium and using color fields as part of
composition are some of the things that will be
covered. Demonstrations will focus on both his
techniques and the thought process he follows as
he develops his paintings.

Spend a day painting atmosphere – all kinds of atmosphere! Whether it’s a stormy day, a misty day or
twilight, there are all sorts of techniques to consider. PSA president, Rae Smith will lead students
on an exploration of the air around us. A one day
workshop might not be enough, but it’s a good beginning! www.raesmithart.com

uInterpreting
with Barbara Courtney Jaenicke, PSA
March 15-16, 2013
Move past copying a scene to interpreting it. Students will work on several small exercises that address selecting a color palette, developing a strong
composition and simplifying busy subject matter in
order to create a mood rather than just a well rendered picture. Barbara will give plenty of demonstrations and provide lots of help at the easel.

March 23, 2013
Painting from live models, students will be guided
through the process of creating a portrait with an

Myriad of Color in Water
uThe
with Dick McEvoy, PSA
Portrait Painting with Ellen Eagle, PSA
uApril
28, 2013
PSA Master & Hall of Fame 2012
May 24-26, 2013
“Painting is first energy and then technique,” is the
philosophy of instructor Federico whose method is a
unique and exciting way to achieve a painterly pastel
April 14, 2013
When water is still, it often allows for light and reflection to bounce off its smooth surface, illuminating the colors around it, rather than in it. The
movement of water is captured by seeing the entire
myriad of colors on and below the surface, and by
communicating an understanding of light’s reflection and refraction. This work shop is aimed at
helping one see more than you have before when
painting water.

As students work from the model, Ellen helps her
students engage in intense color analysis of the
subtle gradations of flesh tones and translate the
complexities of tone and form into a beautifully harmonious construction. Digital images of the instructor’s works in progress will illustrate the
development of her perceptions from start to completion of her portraits and still life paintings.
Ellen’s book, Pastel Painting Atelier, will be published by Watson-Guptill on April 23, 2013.
