Arrive in Casablanca and transfer to your hotel in Rabat where you have the rest of the

DAY 3 - Rabat Morning City Tour
This morning, enjoy a city tour of Rabat. Morocco's capital and second-largest city,
Rabat, which means “Fortified Place” displays all of the fine architecture one might
expect to see. View the Royal Palace and the ancient ruins of Chellah, a city that traces
its origins to the Carthaginians and Phoenicians. Also visit the Oudaya Kasbah, and the
Hassan Tower. Spend the afternoon at leisure

DAY 4 - Travel to Fez
Today, depart for Fez. En route, stop and visit the ancient ruins of the Roman city of
Volubilis where you will get a chance to see the wonderfully preserved original mosaics,
Roman Road, and city layout. As you travel through the Moroccan countryside, pass by
the Holy City of Moulay Idriss for a photo opportunity. Upon your arrival in Fez, enjoy a
breathtaking view of the ancient city of Fez from a hill overlooking the medina. Enjoy a
short bus tour of the imperial city conducted by your Tour Manager on the way to the
hotel. This evening, enjoy a special dinner hosted by a local family and learn about
Moroccan culture and traditions

DAY 5 - Full Day in Fez
Enjoy a full day at leisure to bravely wander the old medina yourself or choose to take to
guided optional tour where you will visit the many hidden treasures of the medina that
only a Moroccan guide can know. Fez served as the capital of Morocco for more than
400 years and is home to the University of Al Karaouine, the oldest operating university
in the world. It is particularly famous for its tanneries and the Fes el Bali Medina. A short
visit to the surrounding leather shops give you the best view of the tanneries. View the
Attarine Medersa, Moulay Idriss mausoleum, and visit the Nejjarine Fountains and
Museum. Opportunities for shopping for authentic Moroccan carpets will be provided.
Finally, view the exterior of the Royal Palace and walk through the famed Jewish quarter
of the medina where you will visit a Synagogue. Though the city has endured periods of
hardship, it has emerged more vibrant than ever, boasting its own distinctive culture, art,
and even cuisine

DAY 6 - Sightseeing en route to Erfoud
This will be a long and rewarding touring day. After breakfast, depart for Erfoud via the
montane cedar woods of the middle Atlas Mountains, passing by Ifrane, a charming ski
resort, and Azrou, an important handicraft center. Continue to Erfoud via Errachidia and
the lush Ziz Valley. Arrive to your Erfoud hotel in the early evening

DAY 7 - Rissani City Tour
This morning, depart Erfoud to explore the small city of Rissani, on the edge of the
Sahara. En route, we stop at a fossil factory to learn more about this unique activity
which is famous in the region. Then, we tour the lively souk and visit an 18th-century
ksar. Next, we discover the ancient ruins of Sijilmasa on the River Ziz, once a bustling
Berber city and medieval trade depot. Return to Erfoud for an afternoon at leisure or join
the optional tour of the Sahara, including a camel ride into the desert. Return after
sunset for overnight

DAY 8 - Sightseeing en route to Ouarzazate
This morning, continue your journey to Tinghir via the Tinjdad Road. Stop to visit the
magnificent Todgha canyons, which rise to a towering 800 feet. After a brief stop in the
Dades Canyons, continue to Ouarzazate via the road of the thousand Kasbahs, and the
Dades Valley, famous for its roses and the yearly Rose Festival. Arrive at the hotel in
Ouarzazate later this evening

DAY 9 - Ouarzazate City Tour, Travel to Marrakesh
Enjoy a city tour of Ouarzazate, a desert city at the gates of the Sahara. Its strange
name means "without noise" in the Berber language. Walk in the Taourirt village, which
was constructed in the 12th century and still inhabited today. It was an important village
located at the crossroads between the Sahara Desert and the north of Morocco. Your
tour also includes the Kasbah Taourirt, an impressive structure that was built to house
hundreds of people. You will have the opportunity to shop for special Moroccan
souvenirs, such as pottery, jewelry and ceramics. Finally, visit Ait Benhaddou, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. This afternoon travel to Marrakesh via the highest road
point in Morocco, the Tichka Pass, offering an impressive landscape in the heart of the
Atlas Mountain chain

DAY 10 - Marrakesh City Tour
After breakfast, enjoy a morning tour of the city. Visit the Saadian Tombs, dating back to
the 16th century, where Saadian royalty found their final resting place. Your tour also
includes the Koutoubia Minaret, the beautiful Bahia Palace, as well as the opportunity to
shop for Moroccan spices and herbs. Finally, end the tour by walking through the
medina, getting a chance to admire all of the different artisans performing their craft
before arriving at the Jaama El Fna Square. Spend the afternoon at leisure or choose to
take the optional tour where you will have a chance to watch couscous being made as
well while enjoying a traditioal lunch as well as visiting the Majorelle Gardens and the
Marrakesh Museum. Tonight attend the optional dinner with horse-drawn carriage ride.

residential areas of Casablanca to the city center to visit the Mohamed V Square, the

Join a day-long tour devoted to Fez, the oldest of the imperial
cities, which is best known for its spiritual and educational
contribution to the Moroccan culture. Your tour includes visits to
the medieval Fez el Bali Medina (a UNESCO World Heritage
Site), the Attarine Medersas, Nejjarine Fountains and Museum,
and the exteriors of the Al Karaouine mosque and Moulay Idriss

how the traditional Berber dish, couscous, is made. In a beautiful

Marrakesh Museum. Housed in a beautiful 19th century building

In the morning, travel to Essaouira, a seaside resort city on
Morocco's Atlantic Coast. Along the way, stop at the Marjana CoOperative to view traditional methods of extracting Argan Oil. The
demand for the oil has grown drastically due to its heavy use in
cosmetics and cuisine in the West. Continue on to Essaouira,
whose medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an
excellent example of a fortified North African town. Spanish
cannons still line the battlements while parasols dot the harbor's
beaches, creating a remarkably picturesque setting. You will walk
along the city's ramparts just north of Moulay Hassan Square

DAY 2, Monday - Arrive in Casablanca, Transfer to Rabat
Arrive in Casablanca this morning. We will return to see more of this legendary city at
tour's end. For now, we transfer to Rabat, a heady swirl of color, culture, and history.
Arrive at your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure. Tonight, join your fellow travelers
for a welcome briefing. Following the orientation, we enjoy a Welcome Dinner at the

DAY 3, Tuesday - Rabat City Tour
After breakfast, we tour the capital. Begin with a drive past the beautifully tiled entrance
to the Royal Palace, followed by a stop at Bab Rouah, or the city's “Gate of the Winds,”
so called because it's been battered by Atlantic winds since its construction in 1197. We
visit Hassan Tower, part of an unfinished mosque started by a 12th-century caliph. At
the incredibly preserved Kasbah of the Udayas, we explore the fortress and take a
shady stroll in the French-colonial Andalusian gardens. End our day at Chellah, the

DAY 4, Wednesday - Explore Volubilis & Meknes, Overland to Fez
After breakfast, we drive inland to Fez. Along the way, we stop to explore the UNESCO
World Heritage Site of Volubilis, the once-bustling city and African administrative center
of the Roman Empire. The site also has vestiges of the Berber civilization that took the
city from Rome in AD 270. We continue to Meknes and view the Bab Mansour gate,
beautifully patterned with zellij mosaics. We continue to Fez and enjoy dinner at the
hotel later this evening

DAY 5, Thursday - Tour Fez, Enjoy Home Hosted Dinner
We explore the sprawling medina of Fez by foot this morning. It's said that this is the
world's largest car-free urban area; undistracted by traffic, you're sure to agree that
strolling here is a feast for the senses. We'll enter via the Bab Boujloud, or "Blue Gate"
and visit the famed Al-Bou Inania madrasa. Afterward, you will have an opportunity to
shop for authentic Moroccan carpets. Then, stop at the Chouwara Tannery to see how
leather is cut and dyed using traditional techniques. At the Nejjarine Museum, browse
the collection of wooden arts and crafts, then view copper craftsmen at work in Seffarine
Square. Our tour ends outside the Karaouine Mosque and University, the oldest
continuously functioning university in the world, founded in the year 859. After lunch in
the medina, our guide leads us through the Jewish Quarter, or mellah, built in 1438. By
the end of our walk, we'll be at the King's Palace. This evening, we're the guests of a
local Fez family for dinner. Over typical Moroccan, home-prepared food, we'll connect
with our hosts

DAY 6, Friday - Cross Middle Atlas Mountains, Drive to Erfoud
Today is a thrilling adventure into Morocco's Middle Atlas Mountains. We begin with a
stop in Ifran, a Moroccan ski resort. Then ascend scenic roads past pine groves and
giant cedar trees. Midmorning, we cross the 6,000-foot pass and continue west toward
the great Sahara. Next, we stop for lunch in the village of Midelt. Then as we approach
Erfoud, we enjoy views of the remarkable Ziz Gorges and vast valleys

DAY 7, Saturday - Experience Rissani, Sahara Camp
This morning, we explore the small city of Rissani on the edge of the Sahara. En route,
we stop at a fossil factory to learn more about this unique activity which is famous in the
region. Then, wander its lively souk, and visit a 17th-century ksar. Then, stop to discover
the ancient ruins of Sijilmasa on the River Ziz, once a bustling Berber city and medieval
trade depot. We'll pause to visit a local bread shop, where we'll witness and sample an
ancient culinary art. After lunch at our hotel, we journey into the Sahara Desert, stopping
en route to share tea with some welcoming locals in a Berber tent. Later, settle in to our
Sahara camp, where dunes rise and fall around us and we feel the adventuresome spirit
of explorers of old. You'll even have the opportunity to enjoy a short camel ride. Later,
we witness an incredible sunset here and enjoy traditional music under a canopy of stars

DAY 8, Sunday - Explore Desert & Todra Gorge, Overland to Ait Ben Haddou
Awake amidst the silence of the desert this morning as Morocco's natural beauty
continues to astound you. After breakfast, we leave our camp and make our way to the
lovely oasis of Tinghir for lunch. But the real attraction here is the spectacular Todra
Gorge, a deep ravine carved by the Todra River over millennia. There'll be time to
marvel at this sight before we continue to the Dades Valley, where roses bloom in
profusion in springtime. The locals make good use of the prolific flower by producing
rose water here. Dinner tonight is at our Ait Ben Haddou hotel

DAY 9, Monday - Visit Ait Ben Haddou, Travel to Marrakesh
After breakfast at the hotel , we take time to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait

Morocco: a village that seems to rise from the sands. Its desert-dusted Kasbahs and
maze-like warrens are sure to enthrall you. Next, we make our way to the magical city of
Marrakesh. This evening, get the details about henna painting during a talk and
demonstration. Dinner tonight at our Marrakesh hotel

DAY 10, Tuesday - City Tour of Marrakesh, Bahia Palace
Discover historic and exotic Marrakesh today, the "City of Ochre." We begin at the 12thcentury Koutoubia Mosque, its minaret still topped with four copper globes. Then we
explore Bahia Palace, where 360 rooms were once adorned with Italian marble and
Sudanese gold. For a more recent archaeological find, we'll see the richly decorated
tombs of the Saadi Dynasty. You will also have the opportunity to shop for authentic
Moroccan jewelry. Enjoy lunch on your own in the medina. Afternoon at leisure to
explore this fascinating city independently. This evening, an optional horse-drawn
carriage ride takes you through the lively streets of Marrakesh followed by a lavish

Transfer to Casablanca today, stopping en route for a light lunch in a local restaurant.
Upon arrival, we see the fabled city's important sights, including the Mohammed V
Square, the city's administrative seat. Next, marvel at the massive Hassan II Mosque,
dramatically perched on a promontory on the Atlantic. Its indoor and outdoor space can
accommodate 105,000 worshippers. In the Habous district, we peruse the market and
admire the exterior of the Royal Palace. Tonight, we've selected a special venue for our

Day 1
Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Morocco. An airport arrival transfer is included, although this
transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation
through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking or at least 15 days
prior to travel (we may not be able confirm requests made any closer). Once you have
provided your details a representative will be booked to meet you at the airport and transfer
you to the hotel. Your adventure begins today with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. Please look
for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where it will take place. If you can't arrange a
flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll
be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to
be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next
of kin information at this meeting, so ensure you have all these details to provide to your

Day 2
After breakfast today, Casablanca beckons. Take a 45-minute guided tour of the Hassan II
Mosque. Completed in 1993, this extraordinary monument was the late king's most
ambitious project and his legacy to the city. Its 200 metre-high minaret is the tallest in the
world. Next, it's about a one-hour drive to the capital of Rabat. Rabat's history is long and
colourful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates and more recently the Moroccan
parliament. It contains numerous fine Arab monuments, some dating to the Almohad and
Merenid dynasties and others that are far older. The earliest known settlement is Sala,
occupying an area now known as the Chellah, where you'll visit the remains of the citadel.
You'll also see the vast minaret of the Hassan Mosque and explore the walled quarter of the
Kasbah des Oudaias. In the afternoon continue on for two-and-a-half hours to Meknes,
where you'll spend the night.
Day 3
Today enjoy a morning tour of Meknes. Discover the charming streets of the old medina.
From the northern gate of Bab Berdaine walk to the shrine of Moulay Ismail, who turned
Meknes from a provincial town to an imperial city in the 17th century. Visit the Bou Inania
Medresse (religious school) and the old souq, before driving to the nearby archeological site
of Volubilis. World Heritage-listed Volubilis was one of the Roman empire's most remote
bases. When it was damaged by an earthquake in the 18th century, much of the marble was
taken for construction in Meknes. Enjoy a tour of the ancient hilltop ruins with a local guide.
Afterwards, make the two-hour drive to Fes, where you'll spend a free afternoon.
Day 4
Fes is the most complete medieval city in the Arab world. Today take a guided group walking
tour of the old city, known locally as Fes el Bali. Step back into the Middle Ages in the
labyrinth of the Medina, which is alive with craftsmen, markets, tanneries and mosques. Look
out for the Medersa Bou Inania, one of the city's most beautiful buildings, which has recently
been restored and is now open to tourists. Visit the Belghazi Museum, Medresse el Attarine
and the splendid Funduk Nejjarine, a beautifully restored 18th century inn. You'll also see the
famous tannery, known for the iconic view overlooking its dye pits, and a ceramic factory
where you can see potters working in the traditional way. In the evening enjoy a delicious
group dinner of Moroccan specialities like harira (chickpea soup) and chicken-stuffed pastilla
with couscous. The group may also head to the Palais Jamai for a drink. Watching the
sunset over the Medina while a dozen prayer calls vie for attention is an experience you'll
likely remember for a long time.
Day 5
Today you are free to discover more of Fes in your own time. The 'New City' of Fes el Jedid
(not to be confused with the Nouvelle Ville) is well worth a visit. Constructed by the Merenids
in the 13th and 14th centuries, Fes el Jedid was an entirely planned city. Later, escape the
big city and head off the beaten track to the Berber town of Sefrou, where you can stroll the
streets, visit the market and soak up the atmosphere.
Day 6
Today head south in a private minivan towards the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains. The fourhour drive takes you through cedar forests that are home to Barbary apes, North Africa's
only monkey. Midelt is a smallish market town surrounded by farmland and orchards, and the
perfect spot to break the journey to the Sahara. The area is populated with Berber people
and nomadic shepherds attending to their flocks. After checking in to the hotel, stretch your
legs for a few hours on an easy hike in the nearby hills, with a chance to meet some locals.
Day 7
This morning there's time to take another walk around Midelt, haggle for carpets (mainly
Kilims) or visit the nearby Franciscan convent where local girls and women learn weaving,
tapestry and embroidery. Continue on to the small Saharan village of Merzouga, set to the
backdrop of the orange Erg Chebbi sand dunes. You'll be able to leave your gear at a simple
auberge before riding out into the Sahara Desert on a camel, hopefully enjoying a
spectacular sunset along the way. The dunes are stunning, especially at this time of the day.
Tonight the group will camp under the stars and enjoy some traditional desert hospitality.
Day 8
Make an early start this morning with a sunrise ride back to the auberge. Head to Todra
Gorge, a massive trench with 250 metre-high walls. A short walk in the area may take in the
gorge, local farmland and a ruined village. Continue to the beautiful Dades Valley for a break
and to take some photos of the stunning scenery and mud-brick villages. Arrive in the
M'Goun Valley, where you'll spend the next two nights in a Berber house.
Day 9
You have a full day to explore this beautiful area, and the best way to do it is on foot. There
are a couple of circuits to choose from, but the most popular choice, and the one we
recommend, is a 10 kilometre circuit that will take about four hours. The trail undulates
slightly here and there, but isn't too challenging if you have a basic level of fitness. On the
walk you'll pass Berber villages, meeting local Berbers along the way. The surrounding
mountains and the famous Rose Valley make a sensational setting.
Day 10
Leaving the Dades Valley today, set off on the fabled 'Road of 1,000 Kasbahs'. The first stop
is at Skoura Oasis, where you'll visit the Kasbah Ameridhl with its extravagant decorations
and mud-brick fortifications. Continue on your journey to Ait Benhaddou. Perched on a hilltop
and almost unchanged since the 11th century, Ait Benhaddou is one of Morocco's most
iconic sites. Its grant kasbah is one of the most beautiful in Morocco and the fortified village
is a fine example of clay architecture. The town is also famous for its role on the silver
screen, featuring in numerous films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Jewel of the Nile and
Gladiator. Enjoy a walk through the old town before heading to your nearby hotel for the
night.
Day 11
Drive for several hours through the winding roads of the Atlas Mountains, bound for
Marrakech. We can take our time today, as we enjoy the magnificent scenery and make
photo stops along the way. On arrival into Marrakech, check in to your beautiful riad hotel
and relax. In the evening, perhaps head to Jemaa el Fna, one of the largest public spaces in
the world and synonymous with the city of Marrakech. Every night the square comes alive
with snake-charmers, musicians, story-tellers, fire-eaters and hundreds of small outdoor
restaurants.
Day 12
After breakfast today, meet your local guide and set off on a morning tour of the old medina.
Explore the tranquil courtyards, salons and chambers of Bahia Palace, a splendid mansion
built in 1866 for a former slave who had risen to power within the government. Continue to
the Marrakech Museum, itself a former palace, which houses a fine collection of Moroccan
art and sculpture. Stop by the Koutoubia Mosque; its famous minaret is the prototype for
others of its kind around the world, including La Giralda in Seville. Walk back through the
streets of the old medina to the Jemaa el Fna. The rest of the day is free to explore further or
shop in the bazaar. Perhaps visit the tropical gardens of the French painter Jacques
Majorelle or check out the ruins of the Palais Badi, once one of the most beautiful palaces in
the world. In the evening, why not enjoy one last dinner with your group in one of the many
restaurants lining the main square?
Day 13
Your trip ends today after breakfast. Check-out time is usually around midday and you are
free to leave at any time. If you have arranged a private airport transfer you will be advised of
the pick-up time. Additional accommodation can be pre-booked if you wish to spend more
time exploring Marrakech.

- On Day 4 of the trip, you'll embark on a full-day tour around the Medina of Fes. While you'll
be on your feet for at least five to six hours, this is one of the highlights of Morocco and well
worth any weariness at the end of the long day.
- On Day 7, the group will take a camel trek through the Sahara. This is a great way to
experience the desert, but if you'd prefer, it's possible to walk alongside the caravan on the
sand for about an hour. You'll need to walk back the same distance the next morning, but
don't worry, as it’s a gentle, relaxing walk.
- On Day 9 you'll visit M’Goun Valley and Todra Gorge. This remote area of Morocco is an
amazing place to discover on foot, but to do so you'll need a moderate level of fitness and
have the relevant footwear and clothing with you. If trekking isn’t really your thing, have no
fear, as there are plenty of other activities to do in the valley.
- The weather in Morocco can be extreme. Summer temperatures can be uncomfortably hot,
especially for those who aren't accustomed to the heat, so please consider what time of year
you travel carefully. If you do travel in the warmer months, pack layers to cover you from the
sun, bring the necessary sun protection and drink plenty of water.
- In 2016, Ramadan will take place from 7 June to 6 July. This is the holiest month of the
year for Muslims around the world. Many festivals are marked as Islamic Holidays, which
may cause some disturbance to your travels around this time. Some regular services may
not be available or open during the daytime, such as restaurants or coffee bars. Please
consider your travel arrangements carefully.
- As Morocco has a tipping culture, travellers are expected to tip small amounts for most
services, so please be prepared. Your trip leader and the tipping section of our Essential Trip
Notes will help to provide you with some suggestions as to what amounts are appropriate.
- Although you shouldn’t expect any aggressive selling techniques in Morocco, please be
