Dear Rider,
The NICA Invitational Camp is quickly approaching. We are very glad you will be coming, as it will be a week
to remember. In order to be fully prepared for camp you should think about the following:
1. If you’ve been taking a break from riding since the State Champs, we recommend you start riding more
before camp. Rest is important after a long race series, however everyone needs to be mentally and physically
fit to train and race all week at camp.
2. Please make sure your bike is all tuned up, clean, and ready to ride when you get to camp. If something isn’t
quite right, get it to your local bike shop now.
3. Top riders at the camp will earn the opportunity to represent NICA and join the Subaru-Trek Mountain Bike
Team at Nationals in Ketchum, Idaho June 13-16th. Rider selections will be made Thursday, June 24th at camp
and are based on cumulative times from the camps five timed events. Two or three riders from each category
will be selected. More details on Nationals Trip will be announced at Camp.
4. Three to five of the following timed events will be included in the overall times used for Nationals team
selection: ten minutes + hill climb, flat time trial, short hill climb, circuit time trial, tire change, and chain
repair. (Riders will have their choice of tire to change)
5. Registration will be held on Monday, June 20th from 9:00 – 10:30 AM (unless you have made arrangements
to come on Sunday night). The following forms are attached to get you there ready to ride:

2011 NICA Invitational Camp Packing List:
The following is a guideline for what to bring to camp:
 Mountain bike in working condition – TUNED and Ready to go!
 Any prescriptions- please discuss with your coaches upon check-in
 4 tubes, patch kit, pump or inflator (extra tires will be provided in the event of an
emergency.
 water bottles (2) or hydration pack, energy bars
 extra handlebar grips
 tools for unpacking and packing your bike and a small pocket knife
 7 pairs underwear, 8 pairs socks
 6 t-shirts
 3 pair riding shorts
 4 riding jerseys, SS
 2 riding jerseys, LS
 1 riding jacket
 1 wind or rain jacket
 tights or leg warmers and arm warmers
 short and long finger gloves
 helmet, riding glasses
 1 pair jeans, 2 pair shorts
 1 pair gym shorts
 2 polo shirts
 1 button down dress shirt
 sweatshirt
 light jacket
 baseball cap
 toiletry kit including simple first aid items
 bedding and a towel (beds are size twin extra long; queen size sheets will fit)

The weather can range from 55 degrees and raining to 105 and sunny, so be prepared
for anything!

INVITATIONAL CAMP RULES
General Rules:
• Know the agenda, be where you are suppose to be when you are suppose to be there.
• If you leave the goup at any time, tell a staff member first.
• Say please and thank you.
• Wear a helmet at all times. If you put a leg over the bike, the helmet must be strapped
to your head.
• Shower up and dress before you hang out in the common area.
• Keep your room clean and organized.
• Practice good sportsmanship.
• Communicate any problems to the staff.
10 Second Penalty Rules:
• Inappropriate language.
• MIA. We don't know where you are and have to find you.
• You are late to a meeting or ride.
• Unsportsmanlike conduct or commentary.
1 minute Penalty Rules
• MIA. We don't know where you are and can't find you.
•Free-riding on campus.
You may earn an early departure
•If you are found in the possession of or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
•If you are involved with vandalism or abuse of facilities.
•If you are involved with late night escapades.
•If you are the source of a complaint from the other camps or the NorCal staff.

RIDE RULES
1. Never take risks. This is the number one rule, athletes that have a risk-taking attitude or are witnessed
taking risks will not be tolerated. A risk is defined as willingly attempting anything which is beyond one’s
ability to control in a safe manner.
2. Wear a helmet at all times. Under no circumstances should a student be on their bike with out a helmet
fastened to their head. While other racers may be seen cruising around before and after races with out a
helmet, BHS Team members will be suspended from racing with the team for violating this rule.
3. Always Yield. Even if at times it seems inconvenient. Being sensitive to how others perceive you will
assure a positive image for your sport and minimize the restrictions that follow confrontations and negative
encounters. Remember that bicycles in the backcountry can be an unwelcome experience for horses and
hikers.
4. Pass with Care. Let others know of your presence well in advance. Use a chime or audible greeting to
avoid startling others. Be especially careful when passing a horse, as each will react differently; stop and
ask the rider for instructions. By asking if the horse is easily spooked, you show an awareness of the rider’s
needs. Sometimes it may be necessary to dismount and remove your bike from the trail to allow others to
pass.
5. Stay on Trails. Riding off-trail damages meadows and other fragile ecosystems. Never cut switchbacks as
this accelerates erosion. Beware the types of soil you are riding on. Never ride on muddy trails and carry
your bicycle around muddy spots.
6. Control your speed. Safe speeds are relative to terrain and your experience as a rider. Be able to stop
safely without skidding in the distance that you can see ahead. Approach switchbacks and turns in
anticipation of someone coming around the bend.
7. Respect Wildlife and live stock. Do not frighten animals. Close gates as you pass through, unless it
appears obvious that they have been intentionally left open.
8. Ride predictably. Ride in a straight line, don't suddenly swerve and use hand signals to communicate your
intentions or to point out obstacles.
9. No “Sharking.” Don’t ride in circles around the ride leaders.
10. Do Not Litter. Pack out what you pack in, and if possible, carry out more than you share.
11. Ride Only on Authorized Trails. Check with local authorities regarding open trails and conditions, and
with landowners regarding private land access. Stay off trails that are closed to bicycles.
12. Plan Ahead. The off-road bicycle will open new horizons to you. Some of these should be approached
with respect. If distances are involved, do not travel solo. Expect weather changes. Leave word where you
plan to go and when you plan to return.
13. Minimize Impacts. The practice of minimum impact wilderness use is the philosophy of responsible offroad cyclists. Take only pictures.

Directions to Santa Cruz
From Southern and Central California:
Take Route 101 north to Route 156 west to Route 1 north. Then follow Route 1 north to Santa Cruz.
From Northern California:
Take Route 5 south to Route 80 west to Route 680 south to Route 280 north. Then take Highway 17 south to
Route 1 north to Santa Cruz.
From San Francisco Airport:
Take Route 101 south to Route 85 south to Highway 17 south to Route 1 north to Santa Cruz.
From San Jose Airport:
Take Route 880 south to Highway 17 south to Route 1 north to Santa Cruz.
From Monterey Airport:
Take Route 1 north to Santa Cruz.
Directions to Campus
Once you're in Santa Cruz on Route 1 north, follow the highway as it becomes Mission Street through town.
Then turn right on Bay Street and follow it to the campus entrance. From Main Campus Entrance head up
Coolidge Drive which will turn into McLaughlin Drive. After crossing turn right after Chinquapin Drive into
College 9 (See College 9 Map on back of this paper).
Once at Invitational Camp, please follow
