DON’T MISS THESE TWO PREMIERE GLEN HELEN RACE EVENTS! 2016 MAMMOTH MOTOCROSS JUNE 17-26TH, 2016 Back in 1968 Don Rake and some friends decided to put on a motocross in Mammoth Lakes, California. They built a world-class track 8,000 feet up in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Dave McCoy came along and offered the backing of his Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and the rest is history. 2016 ROAD TO MAMMOTH SCHEDULE Round #1 Feb 7th, Glen Helen Round #2 Feb 28th, LACR Round #3 March 6th, DT1 Tulare Round #4 March 20th, Oatfield Mx, Turlock Round #5 April 23rd, Hangtown OHV, Sacramento Round #6 April 30 and May 1st, 2 Day LCQ, Lake Elsinore Mx Classes and Schedule: www.2xpromotions.com THE TWMX RACE SERIES HAS QUICKLY EVOLVED INTO THE BEST-ATTENDED MOTOCROSS RACE SERIES ON THE WEST COAST. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2012, WE HAVE STREAMLINED OUR EVENTS BY INCORPORATING AN EXCLUSIVE TWO-TRACK FORMAT THAT ALLOWS LESSEXPERIENCED RACERS TO COMPETE ON THEIR OWN LESS-INTIMIDATING COURSE, AND THAT HAS BOTH GROWN PARTICIPATION IN ALL CLASSES AND PROVIDED SHORTGER OVERALL DAYS AT THE TRACK WITH LESS WAITING BETWEEN MOTOS. When we set out to create a better experience for the amateur motocross racer, our ultimate goal was to grow the sport and get more riders out there, racing. It’s been a thrilling adventure for all of us at TransWorld Motocross, as we have seen the average attendance more than double in four short years. Throw in our two new stand-alone events that were successfully launched in 2015 – the TWMX TransAm National and the TWMX Mini Major – and we are “super pumped” to give back to the sport that we all love. For 2016, we are conducting three separate TWMX series! Glen Helen will be the venue for five events; for the full schedules and details of all five events, visit TWMXRS.com. For more information and series’ schedules, visit: 22 TWMXRS.com Experience MX Racing At Its Best with REM! For the 19th consecutive year of its 25-year history, REM returns to “The Glen.” REM provides racers with a safe, challenging track while maintaining relaxed, fun events. Most events take place on the back track (known as the REM track), and often that track is modified to make for a variety of terrain from week to week. REM is known for long motos and short days with professionally run events. REM is also the proving grounds for many of the industry riders and machines. REM is famous for the participation of current pro riders as well as legends of the sport--you never know who may be in the gate next to you on the start line! 2016 Event Dates January 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 February 6, 13, 20, 27 March 12, 19 April 2, 9, 23, 30 (Front track) May 7, 21 June 4, 12, 25 July 2, 9, 16, 30 August 6, 13, 20, 27 September 3, 24 October 1, 8, 22, 29 (Front track) November 12, 19 December 3, 10, 17 Other dates may be added; check the RACING ENTERPRISES HOTLINE: (951) 200-0699 www.REMSatMX.com 23 Kyle Yarnell Remembered A True Story by Owin Wright Motocross people. We are a tight-knit group. The actual number of people who participate in this dangerous and intoxicating pastime is relatively small. There are not many places we can do this thing. So it happens through the days and years, the many races and ridding sessions, we get to know each other. We see the same faces in the pits and on the track, weekend after weekend. We become very much like an extended family, each one a member of the clan. Some of our brothers and sisters we know personally and well. Others less so, but they are family still. We feel this, without speaking much about it. So it happens that when we loose a member of our family, it effects us all greatly. These were my thoughts one day in May, and this is my story of the loss of a young motocross brother. The story takes place at a CMC event in November, 2013. We were racing a Glen Helen, a place many racers call home. It was a beautiful Autumn day, warm with perfect weather. We were going to race on the National track. I was relaxing in the pits after practice. My racing buddies walked over after visiting the tower to get the order of classes and gates. They were all smiles and chuckles as they ambled up and gave me one of those looks... Clearly, they knew something I didn’t, and it was the source of some great amusement. Now, these guys are all a bunch of 50-something experts, and a couple of them were big time pros back in the day. Finally, my good friend Dan, a multi-time CMC champion back in the 80s and one of the fastest 50 yr-olds in So Cal, gave me the news. The age 50 turn-out was unusually small, and I was the only 50 novice to sign up. They thoughtfully suggested to the race director that I be salted in with their classes to make one gate, and yes, they were sure it would be ok with me. It was no fun watching the entire pack ride off and leave me. But it was a fine day, my bike was running full-song and I felt great. I put my head down and road as hard as I could. Maybe I could keep a couple of the amateurs in sight. As I came around the end of the first lap firmly in last place, I noticed this young guy, a flagman. He was looking right at me, clapping his hands and shouting support. He gave me the classic “gas it” sign and yelled for me to go get ‘em! Now I didn’t know this kid, maybe 20 years old, and I was clearly running dead-last. But he shouted encouragement every lap as I came around, and I’m here to tell you it had a great effect on me. Those who race know what I mean. I rode as hard and fast as I ever have. I had a great moto and really felt good about my performance. The second moto was more of the same. I got smoked off the start again, but rode as fast as I could. That same young man kept pumping his fist, clapping, and yelling “gas it” every time I came around. At one point near the end of the moto I lost the bike coming out of a turn. I went down pretty hard. It took a moment to get back up and going again. This kid had seen the whole thing. When I raced up to his corner position he yelled clearly, so I could hear every word. “You got back up. You’re a racer. Keep going!” Those words filled me with such strength and purpose that I still feel them to this very day. When the race ended I rode over and thanked the young man for his support. I told him it really made this race a great day for me, and thanked him again. 24 When I got back to the pits and my buddies, we all laughed and went through the ritual post race stories. I told the guys about the flagman over by Talladega. Then I realized I hadn’t gotten his name. I asked if anyone knew him. Dan answered immediately, “That’s Kyle Yarnell, Lori’s son.” Lori Wilson is the track manager at Glen Helen and we all know and love her dearly. But I’d never met her son, Kyle. I was going to get back to him one day, now that I knew who he was. I was never able to do that. We lost Kyle tragically in early May of 2015. On the 16th of that month, there was a memorial service and ride-day in his honor. I was present, along with hundreds of others in our motocross family. At the service those who knew him spoke of this wonderful young man. As I listened, sitting off to one side in the big Glen Helen museum hall, I remembered my race in November. The hall was packed with family and well-wishers. We were all part of the motocross clan. And we remembered the young man we lost. I rode the first memorial lap of the same track Kyle had been cheering me on. I was just some 50 class novice whom he’d never met. I stopped at the place where I thanked him for his support on that wonderful day. I looked up at a cold, cloudy sky. I thanked him again, and promised I would never forget him. And we, his racing family, never will. Godspeed young Kyle Yarnell 25 es! s r u P ad u Q o r es! With these events added to Glen Helen Raceway it had made a climb to that of one of the most seen and raced on tracks in the world.Today Glen Helen Raceway has added more racetracks and has put thousands of dollars into its facility. Glen Helen Raceway has the National MX track, Rem/Vintage track, PeeWee track and a brand new registration tower. Always upbeat and interesting, Bud gave me his take on a number of topics relating to his love of Glen Helen, his favorite events, his vintage Baja-style racing, and coming Glen Helen events. Here is what he had to say: On the 2015 Glen Helen Museum: “The museum was completed, and extensively used by the motocross community for a variety of functions. It has been an unqualified success in bringing a variety of new events and opportunities to Glen Helen Raceway Park. “ On 2016 and 2017 events: “Both the AMA Pro Motocross Nationals and the FIM United States Grand Prix will return to Glen Helen in 2016. With both events being highly successful in 2015, we are looking forward to even bigger and better National and GP events for 2016! This brings us closer to the 2017 Motocross of Nations at Glen Helen--the event we have all been so eagerly waiting for!” On the Holeshot Club: “The Holeshot Club was conceived to personify VIP tickets for premiere Glen Helen events. I termed the VIP tickets the Holeshot Club because everyone knows that getting the “holeshot” is great. . . it makes the experience, whether racing or viewing a great event, easier and better. Our VIP experience has been expanded and improved upon each year; it is more than just opening up your wallet! It is a personal experience, hosted by the Feldkamp family, with my wife, Pam, and daughter Maggie, personally tending to the VIP ticket holders. We have noticed that once a patron experiences the Holeshot Club, they come back event after event! We also have hosted a number of celebrities in the Holeshot Club, including Chief Charley Beck, Malcolm Smith, Preston Petty, Brad Lackey, and many others!” On personal favorite Glen Helen Events: “I enjoy anything and everything in the dirt! Glen Helen is a haven for off-road racing of all types. . . quad/utv, trucks and buggies, and motorcycles, and all types of racing. . . motocross, track racing, hillclimbs, enduros, even mud runs! Glen Helen is the premiere location to enjoy all dirt events in the LA Basin. I must say that the 24 Hours of Glen Helen is perhaps my favorite event because it is the toughest race of all. Twenty-four hours of intense racing over a mostly single-track course. . . even the Baja is only an 18-hour race! 38 The 24 Hours of Glen Helen is an incredible event for both participants and their supporters!” On his ongoing racing endeavors: “I still enjoy driving and racing the Bel Ray Bullet! Each year, I race the NORRA Mexican 1000 Vintage Race, which takes me back to my Baja 1000 days co-driving with Malcolm Smith! Now it is a family affair, with my son, Buddy, sharing the driving with me, still in the Bel-Ray Bullet! We will be competing once again in the Mexican 1000 Vintage Race in April!” Bud at the wheel of the #29 Bel-Ray Bullet! Buddy, Bud’s son and co-driver in the annual NORRA Mexican 1000 Vintage Race! For entries and info go to: 42 WWW.mudfactor.com Why We Race A Treatise by Tom White First Ride It was probably your dad, a friend, or an uncle that first introduced you to motorcycling. Pretty easy to fall in love with the sport and it can be as simple as just taking your first trip to the desert for a trail ride on a mini bike. The speed, ability to concur challenging terrain, and overcome your fears gets you interested. For most of us, this is just the start of a very fun activity; but for a few – life changing. Play Racer As motorcycling becomes more important to you and your family, you start developing some pretty good skills on a bike. Soon you decide to go to one of the many practice tracks to see what it is like to ride a real motocross track. For many, that track is Glen Helen. On any given Thursday, you can ride the same track that MX and GP stars compete on, and often witness first hand the incredible speed of the top stars as they lap you. As your skills develop you take the next step and that is to enter a race. REM at Glen Helen is a great platform for this as they have classes for all age and skill levels. Hobbie Racer You’ve now made the commitment to own your own motorcycle (or your parents have) and purchase all of the necessary protective gear. Most of you have had some support from your parents, friends, and even “reluctant” support from a spouse. Motocross is an individual sport and competing against riders you own age and skill level soon separates riders with natural talent and extraordinary skills from the herd. As you become more successful, you decide to focus on motocross. Motocross is becoming the most important activity in your life and possibly for your parents also. On an MX bike you are unique, special, and have reached a level of skill that supersedes anything that you would want to attain in “stick-n-ball” sports. Motocross has become your focus and with your parents support, you have pursued being the best you can be at this activity. Some parent’s even make the decision to home school you, build a practice track, and/or put you in one of the motocross training programs to nurture your skills and still provide a basic education. Hey, let’s go for the dream and be as good as you can be. Amateur Star The only way to get sponsor support and industry recognition is to compete in the biggest races. Hey, you know – the biggest local races, Mammoth, Texas, Florida, and Loretta Lynn’s. Nearly 20,000 try and qualify ever year for LL and only the best get the ticket to join the August fun in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The best have usually made a 100% commitment. But, and end to the dream of being a professional rider comes about the time you graduate from high school (hopefully) and have moved to the “A” class. Unless you are the “Best of the Best” or, we’ve heard the expression, “The Next Big Thing,” support from top tear sponsors wanes. Hey, you can still turn pro, but without support, sometimes the expense of the dream and the risks don’t match the reward. 44 Professional Racer I don’t need to tell any of you how big a step it is race Profession SX or Motocross. Only the best need apply and you can count on one hand the number of amateur prospects that will get “A” level support. You have spent most of your life to get this opportunity and your parents have invested a fortune. Some would ask if it is worth it – HELL YES!! Competing at the top level of any sport requires undying commitment and total focus. Even if you struggle as a pro, you have succeeded at something that few people could ever aspire too. Congratulations!! Veteran Racer You are one of the ones that realized that racing at the top level wasn’t going to pay the bills once mom and dad stopped. You got a job, possibly married, but you still love the thrill of lining up and racing your dirt bike. This group starts as early as 25 years of age and for some of us, all the way to 80 years of age. MX racing is always important in your life, but more important is going to work on Monday and taking care of other responsibilities such as family, home, etc. Hey, I started an event 31 years ago just for all of you. It’s called the Dubya USA World Veteran Motocross Championship and it is always held the first weekend of November at Glen Helen. Veterans can test their skill against the best older riders in the world and retired pros have a place to still compete at a top level. Tom’s Full Disclosure I am a veteran racer and have never stopped riding and racing. Back in the day, I lived the dream and was one of the top - ranked AMA Flat-Track Pros. My AMA National number was 80, and I still run that number today racing the 65-year-old Expert class. Looking back, I have some regrets, as I didn’t follow the professional racing path long enough to achieve what could have been my best results. Injuries changed my path and I had a good backup plan. You see, during my pro career and with help from others, I built my own race bikes from the ground up. I worked as a mechanic to support my racing and attended some college. In 1975 I started my own business, Tom White Cycle Specialties that became White Brothers Performance Products. In the beginning, the plan was to continue racing as a pro for several more years. Fate stepped in and I had a second serious injury, so I focused on the business for the next 25 years. We sponsored/supported many top racers in every motorcycle discipline. WB had the best; most committed people and grew to 40 million dollar International Company employing 165 associates on the west and east coast. Last year I was inducted in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame under the category Ambassadors and Industry for whatever they think I accomplished in motorcycling. It was a major honor and one of the coolest things that has happened in my 66 years. Hey, like all of you – I just love motorcycles and racing. 45 Why We Race Tom’s Message As a top level Professional racer, you will have an expiration date! You need a BACK-UP PLAN! Best case you will succeed until your 30. Many soon forget retired pro athletes. If you are fortunate to live a full life, you could live to be 90. Any professional athlete will tell you how difficult the transition from top star to regular working stiff is and how hard it is to find something as gratifying. Profession motocross, but for a few, doesn’t pay very well, you’ll need to work, and hopefully find a job that you enjoy. So here is my message. Make the last 60 years count by living the first 30 to the max while also planning for the next sixty. And, “Share your love for motocross!” Note: We’ll always have a spot on the gate for you at the Dubya World Vet! KTM Horsepower Here! Handle Bars & Paint Brushes The juxtaposition between art and motocross, by Jon Ortner Words, photographs, and art Finding balance in communicating with both the spoken and written word is the most challenging daily obstacle I face. Words are misconstrued, misspoken, not heard, and left for interpretation. Photographs are an instant of time captured in color, with no words attached. Not necessarily sharing the entire story, photos are fantastic for freezing and imbedding a moment in time our actions and events. Art is completely interpretive. With the artist sharing their very best sense of a chosen topic with the art’s viewer using their own language and aesthetic preference to enjoy, judge, ignore or embrace the artist craft. Racing motorcycles and the artist’s canvas Every bit of knowledge I have gained in effectively riding motocycles comes directly through my hands and my relationship with the handlebars. Acceleration, throttle control, gripping, clutching, steering, braking... all comes through the handlebars. The same holds true for my paint brushes. Every exposure, interpretation, conversation, book, museum and art gallery I visit leaves a trail of evidence of what I think works. I begin each project with a blank canvas, and a blank palette. It is up to me to represent myself, in color, with a compelling enough performance so that the work is accepted. No different than when I go to the starting line of a race. The outcome is unknown at the beginning, yet desire, passion, heart and skill determine the final result. Here is a piece that was written for an art show I had at Roy. It is a bit of an esoteric art speak, with a short bio: 48 “Canvas & panel art pieces painted in acrylic and oils, by Jon Ortner. Bringing Jon’s own amplified style that is so impressionistic, the subject in his painted forms morph to the point of being nearly abstract. For Jon, the subject he chooses to paint is his catalyst for sharing motion, actually sharing emotion that is deeply influenced by his adventurer’s lifestyle. A life filled with a sublime exposure to the elements and colors of nature. The ocean, sky and mountains the perennial backdrop for his global experience in motocross, surf and snowboarding. Jon’s work is displayed in private and public collections throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Europe. Please enjoy the very latest Jon Ortner Art, in the marvelous dining experience of Roy, where renowned chef Roy Gandy prepares excellence in American Cuisine nightly, 6pm till Midnight.” I feel like I have a lot of room to grow and improve riding motocross. Fitness and technical excellence combined with a powerful, great handling motorcycle is key to finding improvement, reducing lap times, and keeping motocross fun. I also feel like I have a lot of room to grow as an artist. Racing 49 globally has not only been an amazing adventure, but the exposure to art galleries, museums and churches around the world has exposed me to the fantastic colors and techniques of the masters. My interpretation continues to develop with my medium of choice... handle bars & paint brushes. I hope you enjoy following my art form. 50 Editor’s Note: Be sure to check out more of Jon’s amazing work at: JonOrtnerArt.com, and watch Jon ride every Saturday at REM Motocross at Glen Helen Raceway! In the article, the painting images were captured by Jon Ortner; Jon’s race shot by MotoPhoto, Jon’s portrait shot by Joanne A. Calitri!
