ome returning and several new
competitors will take to the fields
at Chestnut Hill College for the
fourth annual Philadelphia Brotherly
Love Cup Saturday, October 19.
The action starts at 10 a.m., and the
teams compete in two simultaneous
matches on adjacent fields in a roundrobin format until a 12:30 lunch break
and “halftime show.” Then the action
picks up again at 2 p.m. with the seeded
teams competing in a tournament format
until the championship match at 4:45.
Hundreds of fans are expected to watch
the action and cheer on their favorites.
Inspired by the Quidditch game in the
J.K. Rowling Harry Potter book series,
in 2005 students at Middlebury College
in Vermont devised a land-based version
for mortals, known as muggles.
Quidditch has been compared to rugby, polo, flag football and dodgeball and
the coed sport is both competitive and
congenial.
In the fall of 2008 Chestnut Hill College formed a team and hosted its first
Quidditch on the Hill tournament –
Pennsylvania’s first – in the fall of
2008. Chestnut Hill College’s team
grew in ability and fame. They were featured on “Good Morning America” and
ESPN and traveled the East Coast to
compete. The tournament grew and
became the Brotherly Love Cup and

Northwestern Stables and characters
from the Harry Potter books. Later,
starting at 7 p.m., adult wizards and muggles will sample the Hill’s best versions of
butter beers at the Harry Potter pub
crawl.
Saturday’s excitement begins at 10:00
a.m. at the 4th Annual Philadelphia
Brotherly Love Cup on Chestnut Hill
College’s softball field. Free and open to

Chestnut Hill will be Hogsmeade for a day
Paula M. Riley
F
or a magical two days, Chestnut Hill is transformed into
Hogsmeade Village.
Germantown Avenue becomes High
Street and the shops and restaurants along the cobblestoned business corridor are changed into
Harry’s favorite spots. Whether
you know nothing about Harry
Potter or if you sleep every night
with your cloak, you won’t want to
miss a stroll through Chestnut Hill
on Saturday, October 19.
There will be no shortage of
treats at Madame Puddifoot's Tea
Shoppe (Night Kitchen Bakery),
Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor (Bredenbeck’s) and Professor
Sprout's Sweetshoppe (Cake) offer
a huge selection of delicious treats
and interesting concoctions.
Madame Puddifoot’s is selling
pumpkin pastries, chocolate frog
cupcakes, and lightning bolt cookies. The popular Snitches return to
Florean Fortescue’s – these bright
yellow balls with handheld winged
tasty truffles were a huge hit last
year.
Professor Sprout’s Sweetshoppe
and Florean Fortescue’s are both
selling treacle tart (Harry’s
favorite) made with crisp tart shells
and chewy, googey molasses filling.
Chocolate lovers can enjoy cockroach clusters (dark chocolate
loaded with caramel crunch) at
Fortescue’s for ones that are even
more delicious than those at Honey Dukes!
If Harry truly is your favorite
character, visit the Big Bean Shop
(Top of the Hill Market) where
everyone gets to decorate (and take
home) a small pumpkin. There
will be eyeballs to put on the
pumpkin and plenty of sharpies to
draw his infamous lightning bolt
scar. Quality Quidditch Supplies
Chestnut Hill is transformed into Hogsmeade. See next page for locations. (Photo by Carol Bates)
(Chestnut Hill Sports) is selling
Harry Potter trading cards, glasses
and tee shirts!
You can accessorize your costume
at The Phoenix Feather (El Quetzal) where everyone gets a glittery
tattoo and feathers are available for
purchase. The talented muggles at
The Phoenix Feather are happy to
braid the feathers into your hair to
complete that magical look.
Stop at The Quill Shop (Musehouse) and test your skills – write a
magical spell in The Big Black
Book of Magic Spells straight from
the Library of Hogwarts. Witches
and their Muggle moms won’t want
to miss Madame Monika’s Magical
Emporium (Bohemian Pink) where
witches go when they just wanna
have fun! Mad-Eye Moody will be
there as well!
Parents of wizards and witches
will have an array of fun drinks
available at the local pubs including butterbeer at The Leaky Cauldran (McNally’s) and specialty
beer made just for Harry Potter fans
at The Great Hall (Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant. Try out Dumbledore’s Dubbel, and other
delicious beers. Newt’s Potion
(Kitchen Kapers) is giving out free
espresso, cappuccino & coffee as
well.
Many other restaurants and
shops are offering Harry Potter
themed specials and activities. You
can purchase wizard supplies at
Dumbledore's Villages (Ten Thousand Villages) and enjoy pretzel
wands, Sorting Hat cookies, and
Hogwart's stew at Hogwart's
Kitchen (Drake’s Catering.)
After you’ll filled your belly and
replenished all your wizardly supplies, take the Hogwarts Express
Shuttle to visit Dumbledore’s Powers Maze at Woodmere Art Museum. This thrilling haymaze offers
many surprises and there are other
exciting events for families on the
grounds of this museum at Germantown and Bethlehem Pike.
Don your cloak, grab your wands
and jump on your broomstick for
an incredible day of magic and
mystery in Chestnut Hill.
