Here’s a quick run down of what’s new under the ever present Dunlop tent. Dunlop develops two tires that set new standards for motocross performance The Geomax MX51, successor to the immensely popular D756 series, excels beyond the D756’s legendary performance, and is destined to create a new legend of its own. The MX51 is designed to excel in intermediate terrain while also delivering excellent performance in both soft terrain as well as hard-pack conditions, plus added durability. The Geomax MX31 supplants the D773 and sets new performance benchmarks in soft terrain, especially in sandy and muddy conditions. Both tires are aimed squarely at riders who compete on the racetrack, as well as serious enthusiasts who want the ultimate performance from their tires. Dunlop engineers achieved a high level of performance across varied terrain through the adoption of carcass construction first unveiled in the D756RR racing tire. Additionally, engineers applied the compound and tread design technology developed through the extensive use of three-dimensional FEM (finite element modeling) and FEA (finite element analysis resulting in our new Geomax Reinforced Pattern™). This technology was then used to create a series of prototypes tested extensively throughout the 2008 AMA Supercross and Motocross series by Dunlop’s professional racers, including Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short and Davi Millsaps, and Geico Honda’s Kevin Windham and his 2008 Supercross Lites East champion teammate Trey Canard. Further fine-tuning of the formula took place at Dunlop’s Huntsville Proving Grounds. < 08 > 09 PARTS bin DUNLOP MX51/MX31 Both MX51 and MX31 tire carcasses are engineered to be much stiffer than previous designs. By incorporating a ply of high-density polyester cord engineered at angles derived from the factory-team racing tires, the reinforced carcass provides a very stable platform that can handle lower tire pressures—which yields a larger footprint for added traction— yet still retains its stability without rolling over in corners or deflecting excessively over obstacles. Dunlop test rider notes reveal that the new construction is more stable, tracks better, holds a line more easily through fast sweeping corners and rebounds less over bumps and whoops. Because the stiffer sidewall construction and new sidewall profile control the balance of flexibility and stability, front tire grip is much more consistent when entering corners at any speed, increasing rider confidence. Molded onto the state-of-the-art carcass designs are two distinct tread patterns specifically designed for the MX51 and MX31. Both benefit from Dunlop’s use of compounds that feature ultra-fine carbon black to yield consistently high grip throughout the life of the tire. Perfected in professional Supercross and Motocross competition, the compound formula produces high levels of traction right off the starting line and reduced wheelspin when accelerating. GEOMAX MX51 tread design The intermediate-terrain MX51 utilizes, our all-new and innovative Geomax Reinforced Pattern, a pattern that improves performance in every parameter—straight-line traction, cornering grip, handling, braking, bump absorption and durability—compared to the D756 series. A side-by-side comparison reveals a more open center-tread area for improved straight-line acceleration and more tread volume (greater land/sea ratio) in the shoulders for excellent cornering grip. Every tread block on the front tire features recessed biting edges, providing more traction and greater grip over a wide range of terrain conditions, especially in corners and ruts. The same recesses can be found on the shoulder blocks of the rear tire. The shoulder block knobs of both front and rear tires are placed in a unique pattern for better traction and grip in medium/medium-hard riding conditions. Each block base has a larger radius for increased strength and added durability, and performance is further enhanced by a “tie-bar” design that connects and reinforces the tread blocks to produce greater toughness and chunking resistance. Finally, the shallow recessed areas in the spaces between the tread blocks give the MX51 improved compliance for enhanced bump absorption and damping characteristics. < > GEOMAX MX31 tread design The soft-terrain MX31 incorporates innovative features that allow it to dig deeper than the previous-generation D773 for extra traction in loose and challenging terrain. Patented, “chiseled” shoulder blocks taper to a smaller point on top, allowing the knobs to penetrate through soft surface layers and grab the firmer ground beneath. To enhance this surface penetration through soft dirt and sand in search of harder ground for increased traction, Dunlop’s designers created a wider tread profile and a more open pattern in the center of the tread by limiting the overall block surface area. In the shoulder area, the land/sea ratio is similarly optimized and the shoulder blocks feature a chisel shape, which allows the knobs to cut through soft terrain rather than float on the surface, thereby improving side traction and making traversing ruts easier. Like the MX51, the MX31 also uses our Geomax Reinforced Pattern with: - Shoulder block distribution for enhanced traction and grip in soft to medium riding conditions. - Large-radius block bases for strength and increased durability. - A tie-bar design to connect and reinforce the tread blocks for greater tread stiffness, permitting improved performance in soft-to-medium terrain. - A distinctive recessed design in the area between tread blocks for better ride comfort. 10 11 OTHG NEWS OTHG CLUB MEETINGS Treasures Report GANG March Birthdays Board member InfoRMATION Patrick Tish 3-2 President Chuck Cook Mark Toguchi 3-2 818-831-5650 Ira Mineo 3-4 president@othgmx.org Mark Kreutzer 3-7 Kon Baur 3-9 Vice President John Lombardo Ray Valenzuela 3-9 909-322-5284 vice.president@othgmx.org At this point in time the club is doing ok.
