Newsletter Central New York - CNY Large
Visit us on our website at www.cnylsrs.com Central New York May ‘12 Edition Newsletter East Coast Large-Scale Train Show—York, PA Inside this edition: ECLSTS—York Article submitted by Paul Torrey 1 Garden Railway Tour Schedule 6-7 Marengo Picnic 3-4 Newsletter Articles 2 President’s Message 5 The weekend of March 23rd may as well have been Christmas for large scalers as a record number of club members attended the annual East Coast LargeScale Train Show (ECLSTS) held in York, PA. While some members went down on Thursday night for the LargeScale Online (LSOL) banquet held at a local eatery, others came down on Friday morning. There was a bit of sad news during the banquet with the announcement that St. Aubin’s would be closing their doors. After a good dinner and door prizes (none won by any of us Jim Higgins, Jim Exner, Bob Loran and Hank that attended), we retired to our Resseguie at the LSOL Banquet held at Hoss’s Steakhouse on 3/22 hotel to rest up for Friday. This is the newsletter of the Central New York Large-Scale Railway Society, Inc. 7697 Berkshire Pkwy Manlius, NY 13104 jmccube@twcny.rr.com editorial e-mail From talking with vendors and administrators of the show, they all agreed that it was well attended. It may have been the best spring show in the last three years. My own opinion was that there were dealers there looking to thin down their inventories….so deals were all around! St. Aubins gave an additional 20% off their There were a lot of great deals to be had and normal pricing to move stock. depending on your negotiating skills, you could walk away with a steal….just ask Dave Wierowski! That sort of set the pace with the rest of the dealers. While I can’t imagine what next year’s spring show will bring with St. Aubins absent, I’m hoping that the folks that run the show will look to fill that void as soon as possible. There won’t be a fall show this year leading to more anticipation for next year’s spring show. I know a lot of folks are already counting the days...just like a kid anticipating Christmas! See more pictures from the show on page 2….. More pictures from the ECLSTS Show in March NEEDED…. Articles and Pictures for the Newsletter We are looking to the club members for future articles or pictures for the club’s newsletter. Possible suggestions: Pictures of your garden layout. Improving your layout this spring? Provide us before and after pictures and we will feature them in a future newsletter. Do you have trains you want to sell? Provide a picture and a detailed write up and we will feature the sale in a future newsletter. Do you have an interesting topic that you would like to share with the club? We can add it in the newsletter. In future newsletters, we would like to feature a club member and their garden railway. If you are interested in participating, please contact Paul Torrey. It’s a great way to highlight your hard work on your garden railways! Please provide pictures and articles by the 15th of each month to Paul Torrey e-mail: paultorrey@verizon.net There were the usual manufacturers and dealers that we’ve seen in years past. Even in retirement, Lewis couldn’t stay away from talking with old friends and meeting new ones! There were some great modelers showing their talents in making motive stock look real. Sunday, June 10, 2012 Finger Lakes Live Steam Garden Railroader Picnic This is the announcement for this year’s Garden Railroader Picnic at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers Club at Marengo, New York. The club will be open from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM with a picnic lunch served around 2:00 PM on June 10th. The clubs will chip in to cover the costs of hot dogs, hamburgers, and rolls. We will also have condiments, plates, tableware, napkins, cups and ice. However, bring your own drinks and water. If you plan to come, please bring a dish to pass. There is an oven and a microwave available for anything that needs to be warmed up. There also are plenty of electrical outlets if you want to bring a crock pot. Although there is a refrigerator, space is limited so please bring an ice chest to insure your food stays cold. If you plan to attend, please contact your club president or Roger Caiazza rcaiazz1@twcny.rr.com or 315-622-3257. In order to make sure we have enough food for everyone, please let us know by Wednesday, June 6th if you are planning to attend. No rain date has been scheduled. The club house can probably fit 50 people for a brief shower and 20 people can comfortably eat there. If it is an all-day rain, then it would be a problem so if you want to come and the weather looks bad, bring wet weather gear or a canopy. We want you to bring trains to run and because this layout gives the opportunity to run long trains, we will have plenty of freight and passenger cars for you to run. Although the primary emphasis is live steam, all forms of motive power are welcome and all the tracks are electrically powered. There is a steam up bay and we will provide all the distilled water you can boil. We also expect that train rides will be available. The Gauge One layout has 3 ground-level separate loops all with electrical power and a small loop for Thomas. We have been refining the track plan, yard layout and operability of the layout in the past year. We have started construction of the elevated track for live steamers. Also in the works is a storage building primarily for Gauge One. It will be located on the eastern end of the layout and will include direct access from the building to the layout. In addition to running trains, we are going to have a trunk sale for any of your surplus Gauge One trains. Bring anything you want to sell and we will have a place where you can display for sale. I know of several people who are planning to bring trains to sell so if you are interested in getting any new equipment, plan to come out. See driving directions on the next page….. Sunday, June 10, 2012 Directions to Marengo….. The Finger Lakes Live Steamers are conveniently located halfway between Rochester and Syracuse, near the north end of Whiskey Hill Rd., approximately 5 miles north of Rt 318. The GPS location is 302 Clyde-Marengo Road, Clyde, NY 14433. Heading north on Whiskey Hill Road, the club is on the right or eastern side of the road. Please enter at the northern end of the property where there are railroad cross bucks and a sign for the club. More detailed directions to the layout, pictures of all three layouts and more information can be found at http://fingerlakeslivesteamers.org/. In addition you can see video from last year’s open houses at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQk018NC0PY. 2012 Club Meeting Dates A Message from the President…. (mark your calendars!) Now that May is here, I know all of us are anxious to start running trains outside on our backyard layouts. Some of us are looking to improve or expand our layouts. I am in the process of adding to mine with the bridges and trestles I have built this winter. I also have begun to make buildings. Some are modified bird houses, but I think they will look ok for a start. All meetings will be held at 9:30 AM at the layout at Driver’s Village. General meetings and Executive Committee meetings are open to members, spouses friends, etc. I hope anyone who volunteered to open their layouts has given Ed Feeley the date and time you will be running. If not, do so as soon as possible so we can update the schedule on the website for people to plan their visits (see pages 6-7 of this newsletter for tour schedule). If you need help preparing your layout for an open house, put out an e-mail or call one of the officers and we will help find volunteers. I am sure there are many who would be willing to help. Executive Committee Meetings Saturday, 5/19 Saturday, 7/21 Saturday, 9/15 Saturday, 11/17 General Membership Meetings Saturday, 6/16 Saturday, 8/18 Saturday, 10/20 Saturday, 12/15 All dates are tentative and may be changed with sufficient proper notice given to the membership. The Finger Lakes Live Steamers have again graciously invited us to join them for their picnic on June 10th (see pages 3-4 of this newsletter) and their open house June 23rd & 24th. More information will be sent to you by e-mail. I hope many of us will join them for a day of running trains and friendship. At the last meeting, Bruce Haney volunteered to spearhead a group that would again bring trains to run at the Golisano Children’s Hospital or Ronald McDonald House. This was something the club has done in the past and I know that those who participated in the past came away feeling they were the ones who were blessed more than the kids that came to see the trains. If you can join, please contact Bruce. If you have any articles or information to share with club members, send them to Paul Torrey and he will place them in the newsletter. I hope to see you at least at one of the events.
