About This Manual
About This Manual
The intent of this Manual is to help you in two ways. One is to follow step-by-step in
the order of assembly of your Grain Bin. The other way is for easy reference if you
have questions in a particular area.
IMPORTANT:
Read this Base Construction Manual and ALL Supplemental Manuals
carefully before starting construction.
The Supplemental Roof Manual is MGB1496 for the 12' - 48' [3 658 - 14
630] Farm Roof, and MCB1484 for the 48' - 54' [14 630 - 16 459]
Commercial Roof.
IMPORTANT:
Pay particular attention to all SAFETY information on Pages 7-14.
• Metric measurements are shown in millimeters and in parentheses following the
English measurement, unless otherwise specified. " equals inches and ' equals feet
in English measurements.
Example:
15' [4 572]
24' [7 315]
• “Horizontal” (—) and “Vertical” (l), Bottom and Top, in the instructions refer to
the Grain Bin as it is standing.
• “Left” and “right” refer to the Grain Bin as you are looking at it from the outside.
• Optional equipment contains necessary instructions for assembly or operation.
• Major changes from the last printing will be listed on the back cover.
• This Planning Symbol is used in areas where planning needs to take place before
construction continues.

SAFETY
Electrical SAFETY
Important consideration should be given to some or all of the following devices and
to others which may be appropriate:
1. Overload protection devices such as shear pins, torque limiters, zero speed switches,
etc., to shut off and lock out power whenever operation of equipment is stopped as a
result of excessive material, foreign objects, excessively large lumps, etc.
2. Safety shut-off switch with power lockout provisions at auger drive
3. Emergency stop switches readily accessible wherever required
4. Electrical interlocking to shut down the feeding auger whenever a receiving
auger stops
5. Signal devices to warn personnel of possible startup of auger, especially if
started from another location
6. Special enclosures for motors and controls for hazardous atmospheric conditions.
In selecting electrical control
equipment to be used with any
installation, the purchaser
must use equipment
conforming to the National
Electrical Code, the National
Electrical Safety Code and

SAFETY
DANGER!
There are Suffocation Hazards in Flowing Grain!
Never enter a Grain Bin of flowing feed, grain, or other material. Failure
to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.
From the time the
auger starts, you
have 2-3 seconds to
react.
In 4-5 seconds, you
are trapped.
After 22 seconds,
you are completely
covered.

SAFETY
BROCK® 12'-54' Dia. Farm Grain Bin Construction Manual (Narrow 2.67” Corr.)
SAFETY
Safety Hazards and Recommendations
1. Never enter a Grain Bin of flowing grain.
2. Never enter a Grain Bin when unloading equipment is running, whether or not
grain is flowing.
3. Never enter a Grain Bin that has automatic unloading equipment without
locking out the control circuit.
4. Never enter a Grain Bin that you do not know the nature of previous grain
removal, especially if there is any crusting evident.
5. Always be cautious before walking on any surface crust.
6. It is always advisable to have three people involved, two on the outside and one
inside, when entering a questionable Grain Bin/storage circumstance. The
person in the Grain Bin should be secured or fastened to a safety rope with the
two persons outside capable of lifting that person out without entering the Grain
Bin. One person outside cannot do this, and cannot go for help and maintain
preliminary aid.
7. Never work in obviously dusty-moldy grain without a respirator. Never work in
such conditions, no matter what the protection, without a second person on safety
standby. Use a respirator capable of filtering fine dust.
8. Be aware that your tolerance to a given material may be limited, and that you
should not deliberately and knowingly expose yourself on the idea that “it won’t
hurt me.” Later in life, you may have used up all of your tolerance.
9. Always be cautious when you are working with grain that is not in good condition.
You can have molds, blocked flow, cavities, cave offs, crusting–it is time to be alert.
10. Never depend on a second person, either on the Grain Bin roof, on the ground,
or any other remote point to whom you shout instructions to start or stop
equipment.
a.Equipment noise can block out commands or cries for help.
b.The second person may fall or over-exert in the panic and haste of getting off
the Grain Bin or running to the control point.
Possible Corrective Measures
1. Install Ladders inside all Grain Bins.
2. If you must enter a Grain Bin with evident danger, use a rope and safety harness
to support and lift you in the event of trouble.
Before it is too late . . . Talk to your children, your co-workers, and your neighbors
about the above safety information. Their lives, your life, may depend on it.

SAFETY
BROCK® 12'-54' Dia. Farm Grain Bin Construction Manual (Narrow 2.67” Corr.)
SAFETY
Considerations that may result in a hazard, damage
your Grain Bin and/or void your Warranty
BROCK® Grain Bins are offered in several models for specific uses. In order to maintain
your Grain Bin and its Warranty, the appropriate type Grain Bin must be used. Consult
BROCK Grain Systems/CTB Grain Systems or your BROCK® Dealer.
Read and understand the Owner/Operators Manual and all SAFETY Decals.
Grain Bin damage can occur due to improper construction of the Grain Bin:
1. Use all hardware specified in the instructions and make no substitutions.
2. Refer to the Foundation Manual for proper Foundation specifications.
Radial cracks in the Foundation are a danger signal. The Foundation is growing
outwardly, and is also pulling the Grain Bin with it. These forces can be large enough
to cause Bolt damage in the vertical seams of the bin wall. It is suggested that if
cracks are present they be monitored for any changes, and remedial action taken.
3. Stiffened Grain Bins must be leveled so a vertical dimension between adjacent
Stiffeners does not exceed 1/8" [3.2]. If Stiffeners are not level, Bolts attaching
the Stiffener to the Body Sheet—as well as the vertical and horizontal seam
Bolts—may become overstressed and shear, causing total failure.
4. If the Grain Bin has a perforated Floor on columns/Floor Supports, and those
columns fail due to improper installation, the Grain Bin can shift sideways,
causing both sidewall and roof damage.
CAUTION!
Cables to support conveying equipment such as bucket elevators or
conveyor legs must not be attached to the Grain Bin roof or sidewalls.
To do so would cause damage to the Grain Bin. Refer to your Roof
Manual for construction of proper supports for such equipment.
WARNING!
Additional loads on Grain Bin sidewalls, roofs and floors can be created
by improper drying methods.
Grain Bin damage can also occur due to improper ventilation, loading and
unloading of the Grain Bin:
1. When the Grain Bin is filled off-center;
2. When unloading is done from the Door or an off-center floor port, uneven wall
pressures may occur, allowing the wall to flatten directly nearest the unloading
point; damage can be seen above and several feet to either side of this area. In
stiffened Grain Bins this failure may be seen in wall sheets nearest the unloading
point. Severe Sheet seam and Stiffener damage can occur, causing complete
Grain Bin damage. Internal grain pressures change when only a few bushels of
grain have been removed. Grain Bin damage can be caused by incorrectly
unloading even small amounts of grain.

Planning Before Your Grain Bin Arrives
Planning Before Your Grain Bin Arrives
Choose the Grain Bin Site
For soil and foundation specifications, refer to Pages 18-21 in this Manual.
Select the site of your Grain Bin with care. Planning for future expansion is of prime
consideration.
The soil area for your Grain Bin(s) should be firm and well drained with a uniform
bearing capacity of at least 3000 pounds per square foot [14 647 kg/m ].
2
Foundations shall be appropriately designed for local soil and frost depth conditions.
Check Delivery
Your Grain Bin is made up of many parts and checked carefully at the time of
shipment. However, use the packing slip and check your shipment on arrival to be
sure it is complete.
IMPORTANT!
How to control “Wet Storage Stain” (RUST!) on galvanized Body Sheets:
Do not permit moisture from weather, condensation, or other sources to
remain between Body Sheets. If moisture is present, separate the Sheets
IMMEDIATELY for good air circulation. Where possible, store all Bin
components in a warm, dry place away from contaminants such as fertilizer,
chemicals and road salt. If this is not done, white/red rust will appear.
The paper cover on the BROCK® Decal helps prevent damage to the Decal during
Grain Bin construction. However, it may be difficult to remove if left in direct
sunlight for several hours.
The BROCK® Decal is to be applied in the center of a Body Sheet in the first Ring
down from the top.
Body Sheet Identification
Each Body Sheet is identified by Part Number, gauge and diameter.
For further information, see the BODY SHEET PART NUMBER Listing and Layout
Diagrams in this Manual, Pages 36-39.

Adequate Roof Support
The Approximate Working Height* Chart in your Roof Construction Manual will
be essential in planning the support of the Roof and/or Sub-Structure either by crane
or center support. Be sure your lifting equipment is adequate for the height and
weight of your particular Roof.
Adequate Tank Support During Construction
Read and follow the information on Jacking on Pages 30-34 of this Manual.
IMPORTANT!
The number of lifting jacks and brackets required is determined by
factors such as Grain Bin size, soil compaction, wind velocity, design
of jacks, etc. Read and follow the information on Jacks on Pages 28-29.
A 5/16'' Grade 8.2 Bin Seal Bolt has an approximate safe load of 1,840 pounds [835 kg].
keep this in mind for the number of Bolts you use to lift Grain Bins during assembly.
A 3/8'' Grade 8.2 Bin Seal Bolt has an approximate safe load of 2,650 pounds [1 202 kg].
keep this in mind for the number of Bolts you use to lift Grain Bins during assembly.
Tighten 5/16'' Nuts to 15-20 ft-lb of torque.
Tighten 3/8'' Nuts to 25-30 ft-lb of torque.

Locate Anchor Bolts (not supplied standard with the Bin)
Take your time. Accuracy will pay. Refer to Figure 16 and the Anchor Bolt
Information Chart on the facing Page for measurements on your particular Grain Bin.
Layout locations and install anchors BEFORE setting the Grain Bin to
insure proper location. Failure to do so may cause damage to the Grain Bin.
Use the center pipe and a board or chain again to make the correct diameter to set the
Anchor Bolts. The Hilti® Anchor Kwik-Bolt, 1/2'' diameter x 7'', or an equivalent
may be used.
The anchor must be at least 1/2'' [12.7] diameter with a minimum embedment of
5 1/2'' [139.7].
When Hilti®, or an equivalent type anchor is used, concrete must have 28-day
strength to prevent pullout before setting the Grain Bin and tightening Anchors.

Construction Overview
BROCK® 12'-54' Dia. Farm Grain Bin Construction Manual (Narrow 2.67” Corr.)
Choosing the Proper Jacks to Lift the Grain Bin
Jacks are used to lift the Grain Bin slowly and evenly during assembly of the Body
Sheets. The Jack shown in Figure 18 is only a representation. Jacks should be
designed using accepted engineering practices, taking into account the dead and live
loads associated with construction.
Jacks must be used on every Sheet on 42' - 48' [12 802 - 14 630] diameter Grain
Bins. At least one jack for every other Sheet (every Sheet is best) for 15' [4 572]
through 36' [10 973] is recommended.
Determine the number of jacks required for the weight of the Grain Bin. Jacks must
be able to hold twice the weight of the Grain Bin. Bolts must be adequate for lifting
the load. (Lift Brackets Bolts are not included in the Bolt count.)
IMPORTANT!
The jack represented in Figure 18 is not adequate for all sizes of Grain
Bins. On larger Grain Bins, electric or hydraulic jacks are
recommended. Consult the jack manufacturer for instructions.
CAUTION!
Do not jack the Grain Bin under windy conditions! This could result in Tank
damage. Read “SAFETY Procedures During Jacking” on the facing page.
1
7
2
IMPORTANT: Read carefully and follow the
lifting instructions particular to your
diameter Grain Bin.
Improper design or use of jacks may result in
damage to the Grain Bin and/or personal
injury.

SAFETY Procedures During Jacking
1. Be sure Jacks and cables are anchored securely.
2. Position vertical seams at Anchor Bolts. Also verify locations of Roof Manhole,
Ladders, Access Door and Side Discharge system before starting to raise the Tank.
3. When jacking, raise the Tank just enough to add one new Ring of Body Sheets.
(Caulk horizontal and vertical seams.)
4. Start assembly of each new Ring of Body Sheets on the windward side of the
Tank. See Figure 19.
5. Leave all Bolts loose in the new Ring until all Sheets have been attached.
6. Attach Ladders Cages, and Platforms.
7. Repeat Steps 3 - 4 as new Rings are being added.
8. Install the Door Access Sheets in the bottom two Rings. Install the Door.
9. Lower the Tank and secure to the foundation before the leaving the job site.
10. Follow the jack manufacturer’s recommendations for capacity and operations.

Body Sheet Identification
Each Ring or layer of Body Sheets is identified by a color. Each Sheet in the Ring is
identified by a number. A strip of colored tape with a number is located on the inside
of each Body Sheet. This helps locate each Body Sheet on the chart.
Heavier gauge material is sometimes substituted for the Door Short Sheets.
