business office or donate online at www.pvs.org and

please email development@pvs.org.
Admission Open House, May 20th at 9am: The easiest
way to share all the great things our school has to offer
is to invite your friends, neighbors, teammates, or anyone else who is curious about Palm Valley School to our
Tuesday Morning Admission Open House. Let them
know they can stop in any Tuesday from 9-11 am for a

May 16, 2014
Summer School: There will be three weeks of summer
school for children Preschool through Kindergarten
(going into First Grade next year). Classes are June
23rd through July 3rd. You may sign up for individual
weeks or all three weeks. Please find attached a flyer
at the back of the Phoenix or contact Mrs. Leany
@jleany@pvs.org for more information. We will be
artist, chefs, and travelers. The weeks go quickly so
sign up before May 27th.
News from Preschool: The month is moving so fast.
Be sure to watch for posted notes and read carefully
the My Day in... so you know what is happening.
We are having a special PJ day on May 22nd (it is
a Thursday). I will be out of town on Friday the 23rd to
celebrate graduation with my family.
May 30th, we will be having a special visitor from
Martha's Kitchen at our Morning Assemble. They will
be collecting the money we have for them to use to
feed hungry children. Thank you again for your
generous bottle contributions.
We are looking for donations of uniforms that no
longer fit and nap sheets if you are going on to Kindergarten. The money from the used uniform sales funds
our literature program each year.
News from Lower School: The week began with
beauty and annual tradition celebrating moms at
“Moments With Moms”! Our generous Parent
Association dads honored the mothers of the
Preschool and Lower School with beautiful white
roses, a lovely outdoor breakfast, and a photo
memento of the moment. Mothers and children were
aglow on Monday morning. Many thanks go to key
volunteers: Rufino Cuevas for his organizational
acumen; Valerie Tanner for overseeing the event;
Mr. Graves for gifting roses to our moms, Miguel
Amaya and Jason Huskey for their photography and
all the smiling mothers who arrived early with their
children on Monday morning. What a joyous celebration!
After celebrating our moms, we gathered for morning
assembly. It is a joy to remember our students’ birthdays in the company of their classmates. In the first
half of May we sing “Happy Birthday” to Jake Puchi
(5/10), Zachary Kazmouz (5/9), Katie Segerson (5/12),
Riley Jorgenson (5/14), Connor Moore (5/15), Jordan
Wensley (5/15), and Hudson Foster (5/16). The Lower
School enjoys the warm feelings these times bring to
all.
Next week our Lower School students in First through
Fifth Grades take the ERB exam. For our First through
Third Grade students this is their first ERB testing
experience. While we regard the experience as
valuable, we also invite you to consider this a learning
experience, as the ERB’s processes and content are
new for our teachers and students. Although some
changes have occurred in the ERBs the Fourth and
Fifth Grade students are more familiar with the exams.
Results of the testing will be available before July.
Please help our students do their best on the exams by
encouraging good sleep, eating a nutritious breakfast ,
and arriving to school in an unhurried manner. These
meaningful steps encourage a positive attitude and
prepares our students to embrace their new tests.
Thank you.
News from Middle School: Permission Forms for
the June 10th Wet 'N Wild Water Park day are due to
Mrs. Ferguson by Friday, May 16th. If RSVP's are not
received on time, students will have to buy a ticket at
the door for full price.
Since the end of the school year is near, locker
clean-out can begin now. It is time to take home
materials and supplies that students are not using
daily in class. Winter jackets and extra lunch
bags should be taken home now.
Congratulations to our very successful MS soccer
team. Their only loss was in the championship game
against Sacred Heart. Now that is a season of which
players and coaches should be proud.

As the time draws near for our exam week, June 2-6, and
for our Closing Exercises ceremony, June 11th, look for
notices to be published in The Phoenix
regarding exam schedules, processes and dress code for
Closing Exercises. Coming soon!
On Saturday, May 10th, Palm Valley brought a team of
28 Middle School students to compete against over 20
valley private and public schools (about 500 students) in
Rotary Club's 20th Annual Math Field Day. Students
competed in math, engineering events and logic games,
and were also treated to "Mathemagician" Dr. Benjamin
from Harvey Mudd College who amazed all with his
incredible mental math talent. Special thanks to Mrs.
Arzano, Mrs. Brown, and Mrs. Mulé for providing
refreshments. Congratulations to all who participated,
especially to those who placed in a very competitive

week run on Saturday night; and what a run it
was! Sold out performances! Wildly clapping and
shouting audiences rising in acclaim. Satiated
exhausted youthful singers and dancers intoxicated
with feelings of personal and team success. Another
Middle School Play has united students and teachers
and parents in doing a great community service.
Congratulations to all the talented and enthusiastic
artists who created 7 evenings of joy for the Palm
Valley Community.
The cast of Rhythm burst into song and dance in the
incredible Middle School play.
News from Upper School: Congratulations to PVS
Juniors Soren Craig and Sam McDonald. Based off of
their PSATs this year, the two met requirements to
enter the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.
With a Selection Index score of 201 or above, these
high performers have shown outstanding academic
potential. Of some 1.5 million program entrants,
these two are among the highest-scoring participants
who will be recognized in the fall of their Senior year.
With AP exams concluding this week, we want to
remind you that students will receive access to their
AP scores based on their location starting July 5th. If
they don't have one, students must sign up for a

College Board account at apscore.org. Students must
have an account to access their scores.

week's Senior Breakfast.
CSF will be kayaking in La Jolla this Thursday. Parent

rooms for any school library books! Notices have
gone home in folders this week. If any books seem to
have gone missing, please replace. Amazon.com is a
great resource for reasonably priced books. Thank
you for maintaining our collection.
Parent Association: The Parent Association would like
to thank Rufino Cuevas for planning and coordinating a beautiful and yummy Moments with Mom
breakfast. Thank you to Mr. Graves for greeting all of
the moms/special friends with a beautiful white
rose. We so appreciate the dads that helped Rufino
behind the scenes to make this a wonderful event:
Rob Capetz, Jack Makkai and Josh Tanner. Thank you
to Miguel Amaya and Jason Huskey for taking pictures
of the moms/special friends with the students as they
arrived in the morning!
