1.RFABC Building Service Worker

This course will show student the importance of
custodial skills in their facilities. All aspects of facility
care will be covered from floor care, to chemical
safety to proper use of equipment.

Lui Passaglia - Success From the Field
Lui Passaglia shares lessons learned after 25 years as a professional football player and
three-time Grey Cup Champion with the same team, the CFL’s BC Lions. Speaking
from years of professional experience both on and off the field, Pro Football’s all time
leading scorer speaks about the ability to succeed as an individual in an ever-changing
workplace, leadership styles, and teamwork. He shares his recipe for longevity as
related to his football experiences.
Lui Passaglia, the most successful kicker and punter in
the history of pro football, has assured himself a place
in the history books—as well as in the hearts and minds
of Canadians. He played with the BC Lions Football
Club his entire 25-year career and won four Grey Cups
with them (three as a player and one as an executive).
In 2000, his final year playing with the Lions, Passaglia
kicked, in dramatic, last-minute fashion, the Grey Cupwinning field goal against the Montreal Alouettes. It was
a perfect end to a celebrated career that saw him break
almost every CFL record for his position.
2.TFM Boiler Basic Safety Awareness

This course provides students with information on
potential boiler and pressure vessel problem areas,
possible solutions, and procedures that should be
followed in case of emergency or irregularities in a
boiler plant operation.
3.TFM Refrigeration Basic Safety Awareness
Tuesday, October 28 8:30am-4:30pm
Member $295, Non-Member $345
This course provides students with an overall look
at refrigeration plant operation, potential problem
areas, possible solutions and procedures for a safe
response to emergencies.
4.BCRPA Playground Safety Awareness
Tuesday, October 28 8:30am-4:30pm
Member $120, Non-member $145
This course is for those participants who need an
introduction or refresher on playground safety
and CSA standards. Participants gain a clearer
understanding of how their local playgrounds
measure up, what problems they have in common
with their neighbours, and how others are
approaching inspection, upgrades, new equipment
and retrofitting.
5.RFABC Supervisory
Part 1: Thursday, October 30 1:00-5:00pm
Part 2: Friday, October 31 9:00am-5:00pm

This two day course is designed to give practical
ideas and skills for those in supervisory roles. The
main focus will be how to become a better team
leader and supervisor. Participants will learn the
aspects of effective leadership including managing
yourself, work and situations. Participants will also
learn tips to deal effectively with people and handle
negative situations.
He is a member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and
the No. 5 jersey he wore as a player has been retired by the BC Lions. His philanthropic
and charitable work throughout the community has become a trademark over the
past four decades and his continued involvement with youth and society ensures that
he will continue to leave his trademark signature on the world around him for a long
time. Passaglia is currently working in home construction and is also the Community
Relations Ambassador for the BC Lions.

This course will provide aquatic centre staff the
knowledge and skills needed to recognize, evaluate,
and control hazards in a pool setting in BC.

Building energy efficiency retrofits have often been characterized by
short paybacks and limited scope. However, comprehensive retrofits
that focus on long terms savings provide a better financial return,
greater greenhouse gas reductions, and increased opportunities
for equipment renewal. This session will look at the benefits of
comprehensive retrofits, how life-cycle costing can be used to assess a
retrofit project, and the use of energy performance contracting as an
implementation option.
An introduction to the principals of Crime Prevention Through
Environmental Design (CPTED). How incorporating CPTED into design
and planning can create safer, sustainable more utilized public spaces.
The focus will be on interior design and layout challenges in and around
recreation facilities to design out crime through CPTED. Come away
with an overview of the principals of CPTED, the direct relationship
between planning, design and maintenance and crime and nuisance
behaviour.
Michael Wilson, P. ENG is Senior Energy Planner for the Community
Energy Association, assisting local governments with energy planning,
efficiency, and renewable energy supply decisions. His extensive
background in energy efficiency includes demand side management,
computer energy modelling, and community energy planning. Michael
is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia and is a LEED
Accredited Professional.
Mr. Greg Perkins of Liahona Security is one of the foremost experts
on CPTED in Canada. He is a former police officer who has been
consulting and lecturing on CPTED for thirteen years in British Columbia,
Ontario and the United States. He has been the sole source provider
of CPTED training to “E” Division RCMP and most of British Columbia
for the past eight years. Mr. Perkins is affiliated with such professional
organizations as; the BC Crime Prevention Association (BCCPA), the
Planning Institute of BC (PIBC), the BC Society of Landscape Architects
(BCSLA) and the CPTED BC Association – as Founder and Chair.

What is the Future of Community Aquatics?
Part 1
The Mission Recreation Park Aquatic Facility will be one of Canada’s
largest public aquatic centres when it opens in Kelowna, BC in April
2009. Everything about this project is unique, from its public process,
conceptual design, components, and construction delivery, to its
business and operational plans.
Part 1 includes Public Process and Delivery System, Plans and
Photographs of the Ninety Percent Complete Building and Sustainability
and Energy Conservation.
David Graham is the Director of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Services
for the City of Kelowna. In this capacity, he has negotiated numerous
public-private partnerships and is responsible for capital project delivery
for all civic facilities (including buildings and parks) and is currently
leading the development process and creation of an operating model
for Kelowna’s new $46-million aquatic centre. David is the former CEO
of the YM-YWCA’s in Kelowna and Prince George and was a founding
Director of Pacific Sport Okanagan, and People In Motion.
David is President of the British Columbia Recreation and Parks
Association and has served on the Board since 2006.
J. Terry Barkley, MRAIC, MAIBC, AAA, Associate AIA is one of
Canada’s leading designers of sports, recreation and wellness facilities.
He is Vice President at Cannon Design Architecture, and is the Principal
in Charge and Project Architect on Kelowna’s Mission Recreation Park
Aquatic Facility. Terry specializes in aquatic centre design and with more
than 30 years experience, is an industry leader who understands the
market forces that influence pool design and water use.
A3: Negligence and Risk Management
This session describes what negligence actually looks like in the sport
and recreation setting, and outlines some simple risk management
strategies to reduce serious injuries and the potential for litigation.
Dr. Ian McGregor, an internationally recognized expert on Risk
Management in the sport and recreation fields, is a renowned speaker
at conferences and workshops throughout the United States and
Canada.
Dr. McGregor is President of Ian McGregor & Associates Inc., providing
risk management consulting services to educational institutions,
municipal parks & recreation and sport governing bodies, specializing
in risk assessments and risk management planning.

David Graham and Terry Barkley have extensive experience delivering
presentations to the general public, City Council and peers, both for

An interactive panel session featuring RFABC Arena Ice Maker
instructors and leaders in the field who will share their top 5 tips and
tricks. Be prepared to ask questions and interact with your fellow Ice
Makers.

Dan Doyle, VANOC Executive Vice President
– Construction is responsible for the
development and construction of the 2010
Olympic and Paralympic Games venues.
Doyle’s lengthy career has been recognized
with many accolades, among them the
Canadian Transportation Person of the Year
(2005) and the Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
In addition, he was awarded the Lieutenant
Governor’s Silver Medal for Excellence in
Public Administration (2002).

D1: Greening Your Project – Demystifying
LEED™
This presentation is intended to provide recreation facility owners
and operators with an overview of how LEED™ can be evaluated as
a project objective. Several topics will be reviewed including costs to
implement LEED™, the Integrated Design Process (IDP), the BC Green
Building Code and others.

Mark Hentze is Partner, as well as the Director of Recreation and
Leisure Developments at CEI. He has a broad range of experience in
design and contract administration for projects ranging from elaborate
spectator venues to community centres, arenas and sports complexes.
Mark leads a design team that is passionate about sport and recreation
design, and is intimately aware of key issues that face athletes, users
and recreational facility operators alike.
Richard Bolus MAIBC MRAIC Associate AIA LEEDap Partner
brings to the firm an established reputation in architectural design and
master planning for a range of development types. Richard has made
Vancouver his home for over 25 years, and the CEI Vancouver office
serves as his base for directing both local and international projects.
Richard’s current contributions focus on Concept Development,
leadership for Public Consultation events and Municipal negotiation
exercises.

D2: Importance of Customer Service For
Maintenance Staff
This session looks at the daily interaction between facility managers
and maintenance staff in order to provide the ultimate in customer
service. Join ‘Chester Field’ in this interactive and engaging session.
Vince Kreiser’s expertise is in the area of recreation facilities
management. He serves as a Program Coordinator and one of the
instructors in the two-year Recreation Leadership Diploma Program.
Prior to Langara College, he was the Assistant Manager Facilities
Operation (Production) for the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver
which at the time was the home for the Vancouver Canucks.
His character “Chester Field” was developed as he travelled teaching
recreation facility operators/custodial staff all over North America. He
claims to be one of the world’s oldest rink rats alive today.
D3: Risk Assessments and Refrigeration Plant
Qualifications
If your facility is going through a risk assessment or you have
questions about the required certifications for working in a
recreational ice facility this session should meet your needs. Attendees
will learn how to fine tune before the Safety Authority walk through,
how to start the assessment off right, and what qualifications are
required.
Ed Dockter is the President of the RFABC and BC Safety Authority
liaison for that association, assisting with the roll out of the Ice Facility
Operator program in 2003. Ed joined the District of Squamish in
1993 and is the Recreation Facility Maintenance Supervisor. Ed has
successfully completed three (3) Risk Assessment Audits and has a
strong understanding of the rules and regulations regarding ice plant
operations.
Ed is a certified Facility Maintenance Administrator (FMA) with BOMI
and has received awards for his work in facility operations.

Chris Johnson AKA Dr Laugh was born in
Yorkshire, England and is a reincarnation
of a joker or jester from the middle ages.
Now retired, after 38 years as an educator,
presents to a variety of groups all across
North America. He has received numerous
awards in recognition of his teaching and
coaching across the province and is now a
faculty emeritus at Douglas College.
