In fact, with your assistance, we remain committed to being one of the best places for a young person or a family to become masterful, to thrive, and to achieve stability and success. On October 13, 2010, the Executive Director (the daughter of a World War II Navy veteran who received medals for logistics) celebrated the 265th birthday of the Navy with Vice Admiral Kevin M. McCoy, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command and the civilian and military personnel based in Washington, DC. She spoke about NCCF’s work and the importance of collective collaboration if we are to “win the war,” if we are to defend against the insidious assaults of child maltreatment, domestic violence, and impoverishment within our very borders. She thanked the Navy staff for their history of giving over $1 million annually to the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), which assists local non-profits like NCCF in meeting critical human needs here at home. Much like the Navy, NCCF possesses a Total Force Vision that recognizes its legacy of caring for the most vulnerable and orphaned children addressing the critical, complex demands facing far too many children and families today, and looking foward to a brighter future. The Board of Trustees acknowledges the importance of building on NCCF’s achievements while moving diligently to implement an agency-wide strategic plan to ensure the delivery of quality and timely services to the community. Philip D. Schiff, President, NCCF Board of Trustees 1 To remain successful, NCCF must be forward-looking, adaptive, principled, and always focused on the vision of a society in which children, youth, and families live in sustained, supportive communities that reinforce the integrity and unity of the family. We need a Total Force to execute this vision: volunteers, professionals, businesses, philanthropists, advocates, public officials, faith-based communities, and the children and families themselves. We need a Total Force to align our human and financial resources in a cost efficient manner. We need a Total Force to meet our strategic imperatives. And as a result...families will be connected to natural supports. For over 96 years, NCCF has learned how to provide the love, structure, and education a healthy family offers in a responsive community. As a Total Force, we will win the war. Philip D. Schiff President, NCCF Board of Trustees Sheryl Brissett Chapman Executive Director Vice Admiral Kevin McCoy and Dr. Chapman cutting the Navy’s 265th Birthday Cake 2 We value agility, learning, and innovation because we recognize that change is ever present and life at its best, is beyond survival. Through shared commitment as an organizational team, we work to create trust, manage conflict, be accountable, and pay attention to results. Lennice Hudson NCCF Foster Parent Spirit Award for Humanitarian Parent Lennice Hudson has been a committed foster parent to vulnerable youth for nearly a decade, serving as a vital partner with the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF). She exemplifies what it means to be an ideal foster parent by inspiring children to love her while allowing them the opportunity to learn how to love—often for the very first time. Mrs. Hudson has encouraged the children who have been placed in her home over the years to be successful through well developed work ethics, high self esteem, and a genuine ability to care about others. Despite the obstacles these children faced in their childhood, Mrs. Hudson’s dedication to our youth has helped them graduate from high school and college; some have even served their country in the military or learned a vocational or technical trade. After the loss of her beloved spouse, and with the support of her own devoted family and church, Lennice Hudson continues to be a passionate, dedicated foster parent appreciated by many in the community. NCCF recognizes her as the 2010 Spirit Award for Humanitarian Parent for the positive impact she has made on the lives of young people. Eshauna Smith Former Executive Director DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA) Spirit Award for Humanitarian Advocate Eshauna Smith was appointed as the first Executive Director of DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA). Although DCAYA traces its origin to a 2003 gathering of local philanthropic institutions concerned about the absence of focus on positive youth development, it was not until January 2006, when Eshauna was appointed to lead DCAYA, that the current movement to change the very lives of youth in the District of Columbia was sparked. Eshauna’s leadership reflects DCAYA’s vision for “a community where no youth is considered at risk and all are respected as valued community members.” She kept DCAYA visible, present, and diligent in its work to keep adolescents in the city safe, healthy, resilient, and confident community members. NCCF recognizes Eshauna Smith as the 2010 Spirit Award for Humanitarian Advocate for promoting human change and systemic institutional responsiveness to the heightened needs of youth in the District of Columbia. The National Center for Children and Families Annual Report 2010 Amanda Broadnax The Honorable Isiah Leggett NCCF Alumni John F. White Alumni Award Montgomery County Executive Spirit Award for Humanitarian Leader Amanda Broadnax was taken from her family and placed into the foster care and juvenile justice system at the age of 12. She reports in her own words that when she arrived at NCCF in June 1997, she was “fearless, feisty, driven, and outspoken,” facing an 18-month “sentence” for violating juvenile probation, yet she simply wanted “to be loved and accepted and not have to rely on drugs and alcohol for comfort.” The Honorable Isiah Leggett, a prominent legislator and government official in the national capital region, has a voice that is both quiet and effective as he promotes Montgomery County’s vibrant resiliency despite the significant economic challenges facing all of our local institutions. He has insisted that the most vulnerable residents of our community do not carry a disproportionate burden as the government downsizes to address the current fiscal reality. This aggressive, defiant young person knew that NCCF was her last stop because she could not go to a foster home, after so many failures, and because she continued to get charges for offenses. She believed that she was headed for prison by the time she was 18. Today, after nearly five years with the federal government, this gifted and talented young mother of two (whose own mother recently died), is employed with the US Department of Transportation, supporting report analysis and development for Congress. Enrolled at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), Amanda is slated to graduate this year with a legal studies and business degree. She has completed a small business certificate with the Anne Arundel Community College. NCCF recognizes Amanda as the 2010 John F. White Alumni Awardee for her exceptional motivation and resiliency for her ability to overcome significant social and economic challenges, and her willingness to be an ambassador for others in the foster care system. At NCCF, he is recognized as a long-time investor and partner. NCCF shares his concern in caring for the neediest and most desperate members of the larger community, and as a result of his efforts, NCCF acknowledges his leadership and dedication to “doing what is right,” during a stressful and highly challenged political season. Mr. Leggett’s powerful voice for affordable housing, public safety, healthcare, and education—critical to NCCF’s vision of “a society in which children, youth, and families live in sustained, supportive communities—” is why NCCF selected him as the 2010 Spirit Award for Humanitarian Leader. His stamina and continued commitment to a quality of life for all residents in Montgomery County is commendable and appreciated. The Honorable William A. Bronrott Immediate Past Maryland Delegate D-16 Montgomery County Spirit Award for Humanitarian Leader The Honorable William A. Bronrott has worked tirelessly on many issues since joining the Maryland General Assembly in January 1999. Some of these initiatives include public health and safety, transportation, and the environment, all of which have contributed to why Montgomery County remains a great place to live and work. As a public interest advocate, and a long-time supporter and friend of NCCF, his voice on numerous laws has remained aligned with our mission and vision throughout the years. He has been a strong supporter of education and school construction funding, substance abuse treatment and prevention, child booster seats, highway, school bus, and pedestrian safety. Mr. Bronrott has also sponsored legislation to encourage fitness, combat obesity, and promote the importance of walkable communities. Mr. Bronrott’s willingness to roll up his sleeves and personally get the job done is why NCCF recognizes him as the 2010 Spirit Award for Humanitarian Leader. He always makes time to attend NCCF’s events, truly cares about the quality of the services NCCF provides the community, and personally works alongside the staff and volunteers of this nearly 100-year-old community institution. 5 Sustaining a quality of community living means we must address not only the pressing needs of children and youth, but those of their families, as well. 6 Adolescent Services 86 Youth | 86 Families Family Services 410 children | 275 Adults | 257 Families Greentree Adolescent Program (GAP) Betty Ann Krahnke Center for New Beginnings FutureBound Independent Living Program (FILP) Greentree Shelter (GTS) Family Stabiliation Program (FSP) 100% GAP and FILP high school seniors graduated Rapid Rehousing Demonstration Project 96% GAP Youth participated in extracurricular activities 100% Adults in Family Stabilization Program maintained/ 94% FILP Youth attended educational/vocational programs increased household income 82% GAP Youth increased/maintained their GPA 81% GAP Youth experienced grade level promotion 80% GAP Youth returned home or transitioned to foster care or independent living 56% FILP Youth were employed and demonstrated increased life skills 93% Women in the Betty Ann Krahnke Center attended counseling to address domestic violence 91% Families in Greentree Shelter moved to stable housing 85% Women/children victims of domestic violence moved to safer living environments free from abuse 85% Women in the Betty Ann Krahnke Center obtained/maintained economic support 83% Adults in Rapid Rehousing maintained employment 83% Families reduced at least half of their pre-existing barriers to permanent housing 79% Adults in Family Stabilization Program gained/maintained employment The National Center for Children and Families Annual Report 2010 CommunityBased Services 1,415 Children | 811 Adults | 716 Families Family Connections Program (FCP) Nurturing Parent Program (NPP) KinNet Program Men-in-Motion Program (MIM) R.A.C.E. Her efforts resulted in hundreds of book bags presented to impoverished children and youth for the first day at school. In January of 2010, Kristen volunteered to graphically design and layout NCCF’s second selfpublished poetry book, “How Long Can I Make a Cookie Last?”, written by Charles Gensheimer, and illustrated by elementary students from the District’s JC Nalle Community School. Kristen, a senior at James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia, is involved with other design and literary activities, and holds editor positions on her school’s newspaper and literary arts magazine. Her love for the arts and the children we serve motivated her to spend endless hours working on this delightful fundraising project. Kristen is a gifted young artist with a deep compassion for others who shares her talent on behalf of those who have much less opportunity. Bregman, Berbert, Schwartz & Gilday, LLC The employees of Bregman, Berbert, Schwartz & Gilday, LLC, powerfully, yet quietly demonstrate what it means truly to “give back” to a special population of youth in need of vital community support. Volunteering with NCCF for over 10 years, they have developed an ongoing relationship and continue to display an exceptional care and concern for the teens who are separated from their families and communities and are residing in the Greentree Adolescent Program (GAP). Since September 2009, Alisha Matlock has been NCCF’s Director of Volunteers and In-Kind Resources. In this role, Alisha manages over 800 community and corporate volunteers. NCCF relies on the dedication and selflessness of the volunteers who play a critical role in changing lives, nurturing children and youth who have been abused and neglected, empowering women who have been victimized by domestic violence, rebuilding families that have been torn down by homelessness and poverty, and strengthening our community as a whole. Although we realize that managing these numerous volunteers is no easy task, Alisha makes it seem so simple. Alisha has a wonderful way of matching the interests of our volunteers with the needs of the programs. What Alisha has done with our volunteers is highly effective. Volunteers not only enjoy their interaction with NCCF, but also they learn and grow from it. Individual volunteers and our volunteer groups continue to come back year after year to engage NCCF and its consumers. This is a testament to Alisha’s work and her ability to recruit, train, guide, and nurture those in the community who wish to invest their time with NCCF. Over the years, these professionals have sponsored GAP’s annual holiday party, and outings for our youth to attend the Washington Nationals games. They generously donate new school supplies for the residents, reinforcing each young person’s excitement and self-assurance as they embark on a new school year, and they have put together Thanksgiving baskets full of everything needed to complete a hearty and healthy meal. Under Alisha’s leadership, NCCF’s 2010 list of volunteer activities is absolutely astonishing! The variety of events that benefit consumers across the agency is powerful. NCCF consumers have been mentored, tutored, pampered, fed, educated, and inspired, and our residential facilities and the campus have been beautified. Our volunteers have hosted parties, led arts and crafts activities and organized donations. All of these activities have played a role in helping our consumers overcome times of turmoil and crisis and move towards a brighter future. NCCF is thankful to have the unwavering support of such a kind-hearted group of individuals. Their consistent commitment continues to have monumental effects on the children and youth in need of positive role models and a spirit of giving. They encompass the best meaning of “community,” personally inspiring hope and validation for young persons at turning points in their challenged lives. Alisha’s flexibility and calm disposition has proven to be an asset in maintaining NCCF’s successful volunteer and in-kind program. Alisha’s work and NCCF’s success has led NCCF to be one of four organizations highlighted by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center as “Premier Non-Profits for Which to Volunteer.” Her youthful, radiating commitment inspires us all—every generation, every walk of life—to make a difference in someone else’s journey. The National Center for Children and Families Annual Report 2010 Treasurer’s Report As Treasurer of NCCF’s Board of Trustees, it gives me great pleasure to present the financial results of NCCF for fiscal year 2010. Although this past year has been challenging for both non-profit and for profit organizations, I am pleased to report that NCCF posted a positive change in net assets of $385,646 at year end June 30, 2010. NCCF’s diversity in funding sources has allowed the agency to continue to respond to the demands of a changing world. The Board of Trustees offers its thanks and sincere appreciation for your generous support and contributions.
