Board for the North Mason Chamber
of Commerce.
For the past 50 years the North
Mason Chamber of Commerce has
continually grown into what we
are today - a strong viable chamber
that is leading the way with 425+
members. Our Chamber continues
to faithfully serve our members, by
providing a vehicle for growth to your
businesses. We offer a strong voice
for the business community and can
serve as a bridge between business,
governments, non-profits, religious
organizations, schools, clubs and the
general public.
The Olympic region with all its
beauty offers endless business opportunities. North Mason has wetlands,
waterways and mountain trails where
Puget Sound supports our men and
women with the largest seaport on

As President and Chief Executive Officer, it is my pleasure to work
with a tremendously dedicated group
of volunteers and staff that share
the insatiable desire to promote our
thriving business environment, as
well as preserve the precious natural
resources for which the Olympic and
Hood Canal region are known.
Our Chamber supports our vital
tourism interests and provides critical
visitor support and information to
insure our mission as the communities’ comprehensive Visitor Information Center (VIC), is fulfilled. As a
complimentary service we provide a
complete library of tourism brochures,
reference materials and video presentations in concert with this regional
guide. All materials are thoroughly
maintained, updated and prominently
displayed.
Further, our VIC has been
significantly redesigned and updated
to reflect a professional demeanor.
We strive to insure that our location
is user friendly, comfortable and
convenient for visitors and residents
alike to enjoy and utilize.

t is a fact
that counties,
cities, utilities
and businesses
are seeking ways to consolidate,
improve efficiency and provide
better service.
If you google “Chamber of
Commerce Regionalization,” you
will find a plethora of examples of
chambers, both large and small,
that have torn down the old silos
established decades ago and successfully joined forces with other
chambers to become a regionalized entity. These chambers are
able to pool their resources, become stronger and deliver to their
members a product that supports
their businesses and gives them
greater representation within their
individual communities.
The North Mason Chamber of
Commerce trustees for 2011–2012
have unanimously voted to
continue the quest to become
a regionalized chamber. It is
our belief that a 2000-member
chamber stretching throughout
Kitsap, Mason and western
Pierce counties makes sense. The
common practice of duplicating
services, staff and competing for
the same money serves no benefit
to business.

outed as the largest designated urban growth area
in the north end of Mason
County, Belfair shares many if its best
features under the broader heading of
“North Mason.” Located on State Route
3 midway between Bremerton and Kitsap
County to the north and Shelton to the
south, Belfair enjoys the status of increasing recognition as the little Hood Canal
town poised on the brink of an explosion
of business and residential development.
A new sewer system slated to go on-line
in 2012 underlines the promise that
there’s never been a better time to invest
in Belfair properties.
Belfair serves as North Mason’s
commercial core, with three shopping
centers, two major grocery stores, several
financial institutions, medical, chiropractic and dental care and a variety of shops
and restaurants. Olympia Federal Savings
recently celebrated the grand opening of
its newest Belfair branch, representing
a substantial reinvestment in the community. The North Mason Chamber of

visitor information and county-wide

elebrated for its legendary community pride, the
friendly village of Allyn is
located four miles south of Belfair on
State Route 3 along the shores of Case
Inlet’s North Bay on South Puget Sound.
On sunny days, residents enjoy an unobstructed view of 14,410 foot Mt. Rainier
as it looms on Allyn’s southeast horizon.
Downtown Allyn features a shopping center, post office, a chainsaw carving school
and wine-tasting shop, kayak rentals and
two restaurants. A new upscale shopping
center with courtyard design and secondstory condominiums featuring water views
will break ground in 2011.

The Port of Allyn manages the
grounds of the Allyn Waterfront Park and
gazebo, a popular gathering place for events
and weddings. Public boat launching is
available adjacent to the historic Allyn Pier,
first built in 1922 and revamped with a
pump-out station and guest moorage.
LakeLand Village, a residential golf
community, occupies 900 acres within the
Allyn urban growth area on the hillside
overlooking the town’s core. This unique
community has grown steadily over
the years into one of Mason County’s
premiere neighborhoods.

A
s State Route 106 meanders
the Great Bend of Hood
Canal, it passes through the
town of Union. Union was the home of
Washington state’s first arts colony in
1924. Today its arts heritage has been
reborn through the Annas Bay Center for
Music and the McReavy House Museum,
an historic mansion that will serve as a
focal point for local history and creative
activity. Unique gift shops and galleries,
live local music, a gorgeous par-72 golf
course, the renowned Harmony Hill Retreat Center, plus world-class restaurants
and lodging facilities complement this
sunny hillside and beachfront community.
During summer, Union comes
alive with regulars who relax and enjoy
some of the prettiest scenery in the
northwest. Public boat launching and
moorage is available at the Hood Canal
Marina. Paddle a kayak or take a cruise
on the Lady Alderbrook at the luxurious

The historic Dalby Waterwheel once
furnished the first hydro-electric power on
Hood Canal. Hunter Farms, just south of

Every October, Shelton hosts the annual West Coast Oyster
Shucking Championship and Washington State Seafood
Festival, popularly known as OysterFest!
Shelton
helton is the largest and only
incorporated city within Mason
County and has served as one
of the nation’s premier log exporting
centers for decades. A small creek winds
lazily throughout the historic downtown
core, which features stone and brick
architecture from the World War I era.
The Mason County Historical Museum
on Railroad Avenue showcases the town’s
early pioneer and logging days.
Today, Shelton’s primary industries
still include lumber and forestry products,
along with tourism and commercial
shellfish harvesting. Several antique

remerton’s early economic
activities centered around the
timber and lumber industry.
William Bremer, a forward-looking
German immigrant, realized the economic
potential of a town located close to the
Naval station and platted the town of
Bremerton in 1891, paving the way for
an additional acquisition of 190 acres of waterfront on Sinclair Inlet, now home to the
oldest Naval installation in Puget Sound,
the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS).
Bremerton’s downtown core is being
revitalized and transformed. Several
projects have already been completed,
including the new Bremerton Boardwalk
and Marina, the permanent mooring of
the USS Turner Joy (a Sherman-class
destroyer which was one of the first two
ships involved in the Vietnam War), the
recently remodeled Admiral Theatre and
the installation of numerous outdoor
sculptures in the Arts District.
The new marina offers 220 permanent slips, as well as room for 80 to 100
visiting boaters. Many festivals, concerts
and events take place on the Bremerton
waterfront, which is conveniently located
next to the Washington State Ferry dock.

Port Orchard
O
riginally a flourishing
lumber town called Sidney,
Port Orchard became Kitsap
County’s first incorporated city in 1890.
Port Orchard is located on the Sinclair
Inlet of Puget Sound, just across the water
from Bremerton and about 20 minutes
north of Belfair and Mason County.
As a scenic waterfront community,
Port Orchard provides visitors and boat
dwellers alike with an array of comfortable accommodations and a full service
marina, located right downtown and
conveniently near shopping, museums,
entertainment, galleries and dining. Marina Park, with its boardwalk and covered

gazebo, offers beach access and is the site
of the summer outdoor Farmer’s Market.
Port Orchard and the South Kitsap
County area are known for challenging
golf courses, antique and collectible
stores, classic car shows, historic homes
and community theatre.
With ferry access from Bremerton
and Seattle, and State Route 16 to the
east, an excursion to Port Orchard is an
easy day trip or a weekend getaway.

one of Key Peninsula’s many scenic shorelines.

do not exist on nearby
Key Peninsula. This scenic
rural area is a key-shaped finger of land
approximately 16 miles long extending
south from the Kitsap Peninsula into
nearby Pierce County and located across
a slim inlet of South Puget Sound from
Mason County. The area boasts miles
of accessible shoreline, active salmon
streams, secluded beaches and meandering back-country roads. Productive
shellfish beds and an active oyster farm
are found in these pristine saltwaters,
with a local park system offering nearly
1000 acres of diverse ecosystems.
Key Peninsula’s towns include
Wauna, Key Center, Vaughn, Home,
Lakebay and Longbranch, where a variety
of services including restaurants, stores,
bed and breakfast establishments, art
galleries, quaint shops, nurseries, fairs and
local events entice residents and visitors
alike to live, stay and play.
The Key Peninsula is home to two
waterfront state parks, both open year
round. Penrose Point State Park encompasses 152 acres, with its counterpart
Joemma Beach State Park featuring 3,000
feet of saltwater frontage.

estled on another nearby
beautiful shoreline of South
Puget Sound lies the quiet,
yet vibrant village of Gig Harbor. Gig
Harbor is located along State Route 16,
about six miles from the Tacoma Narrows
Bridge. This community is steeped in
maritime history, with incredible scenery,
a variety of unique and intriguing shops
and plenty of outdoor recreation, much
of it water-oriented. The spectacular view
of Mount Rainier that adorns calendars
worldwide (seen at right) symbolizes the
captivating beauty of Gig Harbor.
In 1842, Lt. Charles Wilkes wrote
Gig Harbor on his working chart of South

Puget Sound waters, christening the town
with its permanent name.
Gig Harbor’s festival season
begins with its Maritime Gig Festival
in June and Summer Arts Festival
in August. Summer and fall festivals
focus on bluegrass music, Celtic tunes
and Scandinavian traditions before the
traditional Harbor Lights and Tree
Lighting ceremony closes out the year in
December. A farmers’ market runs daily
from early April to late September with
as many as 100 vendors of local arts and
crafts, produce and other local specialties.

RealEstate
W
hile home prices have not
quite stabilized yet, buyers are slowly returning to
the real estate market and exploring their
options. With residential and commercial
inventories still high, it has been a “buyer’s
market” for some time and this reality
holds true throughout the region.
That means there are some great
deals available, both for first time buyers
and savvy investors with long timeline
horizons. People who were priced out of
the market a few years ago find they can
now afford to purchase a home. And with
a good job and good credit, there are loan
programs available.
Mortgage rates have not risen as
dramatically as some had predicted,
either. Many shoppers are realizing that
now is a good time to buy, as conditions
will not stay this favorable forever.
For sellers, navigating the flat market
continues to be a challenge. While it is
expected to stabilize sometime this year,
analysts predict that growth will still
come slowly for many years.
Commercial investors take note. The
region’s access to a range of transportation
alternatives, the experienced leadership of
the business community, and the availability of commercial properties makes
for an attractive business environment.

The North Mason Business Recruitment Group is a collaborative effort of local
business leaders and representatives from the Port of Allyn, EDC of Mason County
and the North Mason Chamber of Commerce. The group is publicizing the wealth of
opportunities available in Belfair and Allyn, due to the recent boon of town improvements and multiple community enhancements already underway.
State and federal grants have generated funding to construct a $40 million dollar
wastewater treatment system slated for completion this fall that will service Belfair’s
entire commercial core. Restaurant and multi-family housing opportunities that have
existed here for decades are now ready to be tapped by investors.
To add to the party, Belfair will also receive a new third turn lane, thanks to a
special State Route 3 Corridor Improvement Project worth $18.6 million and slated
for construction in 2012. The new turn lane will greatly decrease congestion, while the
addition of sidewalks, decorative lamp standards and hanging flower baskets will create
a pedestrian-friendly “sense of place” long desired by local residents and the business
community.

edicated volunteers power the allyn Community association (aCa), a
501(c)(3) non-profit organization which serves the communities of allyn,
Victor, Grapeview, south shore, Mason, benson and trails end Lakes.
The ACA sponsors localized beautification efforts, builds and maintains
positive public relations with other civic organizations and government agencies,
acts as a steward for the natural environment and creates a vision for the Allyn Urban Growth Area. Members of the ACA also oversee local projects, such as a new
park and trail system promised between Allyn and Victor, and a new entertain
entertainment facility coming to Allyn. The ACA Business Committee offers networking
opportunities, and the ACA’s monthly publication, the North Bay Review, fosters
strong communication in the North Mason community. Join us as a volunteer or
become a member!
