THE MARRONE ERA
BILLS COACHES IN FIRST SEASON
Doug Marrone was
named the 16th head coach in
Buffalo Bills history on January 7, 2013. The 2013 season
will mark his eighth as an NFL
coach and first at the helm in the
professional coaching ranks.
His previous stints in the
NFL include three years as the
Offensive Coordinator of the New Orleans Saints (2006-08) after serving as the Offensive Line coach of the New York Jets from 2002-05.
Marrone, a native of the Bronx, NY, is no stranger to the Western New York region. Prior to joining the Bills, he was the head coach
of his alma mater’s football program at Syracuse from 2009-12.
Marrone enters his first season as the head coach of the
Buffalo Bills in 2013 - the 16th coach in team history.

“We are playing for a championship. We are playing for a
trophy. We are playing for a higher calling. We are playing for an
organization that should not be going through this. People in this
area should not be going through this. We have to change that.
We have the ability to affect a region by putting a productive,
winning football team out there. That is our higher calling. And if
you are not buying into that, then you do not need to be here. You
can go play for some other team. We do not want those types of
players on our football team.” - DOUG MARRONE

2012 - with both campaigns culminating in a New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Championship.
A three-year letterman at Syracuse along the offensive line,
Marrone earned Associated Press All-East accolades as a senior and
second team honors as a junior. He was tabbed AP All-East Honorable
mention in his sophomore year. During his time with the first string offense, the Orange compiled a 19-15 record and made their first bowl
game appearance in six years. Marrone and his teammates, including
All-American Tim Green, helped lay the foundation that resulted in the
program’s 1987 undefeated season.
He was drafted in the sixth-round of the 1986 NFL draft by the
Los Angeles Raiders and played two years in the NFL, first with the
Miami Dolphins in 1987 and then with the Saints in 1989. He also had
playing stints with Pittsburgh, Dallas and Minnesota before closing his
career with the NFLE London Monarchs (1991-92).

PETTINE’S HYBRID DEFENSE
HACKETT’S UPTEMPO OFFENSE
Mike Pettine enters his first year with
Buffalo as Defensive Coordinator in 2013 - his
fifth season in the NFL in the same capacity after spending four years overseeing the defense
of the New York Jets (2009-12).
His style of defense, referred to as a
“hybrid”, has been described as fast, aggressive, ruthless and relentless. A key component
of Pettine’s defense are versatile players who
can be cross-trained to play multiple positions.
“The strength of the system is its
versatility. We can have a guy on a certain play fill the role of a
safety. Then he’s a corner the next play, a linebacker the next play.
A guy that’s an end can play outside linebacker and then off the
ball linebacker. We want them to master their first position before
we give them jobs that other positions might do. That’s a credit
to the staff they’ve done a good job to make sure we’ve nailed
down the original fundamentals first before we took another
step.” - MIKE PETTINE
Nathaniel Hackett returns
to One Bills Drive in 2013 as the
team’s Offensive Coordinator/
Quarterbacks coach. His previous stint with the Bills was as an
Offensive Quality Control coach
from 2008-09.
Hackett re-joins Buffalo
after spending the previous three
years at Syracuse working with head coach Doug Marrone. He was
the Orange’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/tight ends coach
from 2011-12 after one season as the school’s quarterbacks/passing
game/tight ends coach.
“We want everybody to be together just like the flow of a
basketball game. You want everybody to know where everybody is
going to be all the time. It’s a little different in basketball, but
we’re trying to bring the same principle to football. Everybody
needs to know what their role is on this play and why the play was
called. That’s hard sometimes to get that information out because
everybody goes their separate ways and works on their
individual techniques. So this is something we’ve tried to create
that unifies everyone… It’s done some nice things for us and the
more you keep everyone on the same page the better your execu
tion.” - NATHANIEL HACKETT
Pettine’s defense in New York finished in the top 10 in each of

Prior to joining Syracuse, Hackett spent four seasons in the
NFL as an offensive quality control coach with the Bills (2008-09) and
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2006-07).
In his two years with the Bills, he assisted the wide receivers
and quarterbacks and participated in all facets of preparation for the
team’s weekly opponents
Hackett worked closely with Tampa Bay’s offensive coaching
staff in the preparation and implementation of the offensive game
plan, including wide receivers coach Richard Mann while helping
guide WR Joey Galloway to his third straight 1,000-yard receiving
season in 2007.
Prior to joining the Jets, Pettine was a member of Baltimore’s
coaching staff for seven years from 2002-08. In his last four seasons
with the Ravens, he coached the outside linebackers as part of a
defensive unit that ranked fifth (2005), first (2006), sixth (2007) and
second (2008) in the NFL. Before being promoted to a position coach
in Baltimore, Pettine was a defensive assistant working with the
defensive line in 2004 after serving two years as a coaching

with Carolina in 2003 as a special teams assistant while also assisting the team’s strength and conditioning program.
In 2012, Lions K Jason Hanson posted a career-high and set
a franchise record with 134 points. During Crossman’s tenure with
Detroit from 2010-12, S John Wendling tied for the NFL-lead with 51
special teams tackles.
In his first year with the Lions in 2010, the kick return unit was
the third-most improved in the League with an average of 3.5 more
yards per return than in 2009. Returner Stefan Logan posted the fifthbest punt return average in the NFL (12.1). Detroit also had the NFL’s
10th-most significant improvement in punt return average in 2010 – a
jump from an 8.8 punt return average in 2009 to 12.1 yards per punt
return in 2010.
During Crossman’s stint with the Panthers from 2003-09, the
team’s kicking and cover groups contributed to the team’s success
which included three playoff appearances (2003, 2005 and 2008) and
two NFC South titles in 2003 and 2008. The Panthers also finished
with at least eight wins in five of those seven years.
The Panthers ranked third in the NFL in 2008 with an opponent
average drive start after kickoffs (24.7) and were one of three teams
that did not allow an opponent to start a drive following a kickoff past
the 50-yard line. Carolina posted a league-best 30 touchbacks, 33.7
touchback percentage and ranked ninth with an opponent kickoff
return average (21.9).
In his first year as a special teams coordinator in 2005, Crossman’s unit ranked among the best in the NFL. The Panthers finished
ninth in the Dallas Morning News special teams ratings which were
highlighted with a second place finish in punt coverage and seventh
in kickoff coverage. Crossman helped guide P Jason Baker to set the
franchise record in net punting average in both 2005 (38.9) and 2006
(39.0). In both years, Baker’s net punting average was first in the NFC
and third in the NFL. From 2005-09, Baker ranked eighth in the NFL
with a combined net punting average of 38.0.
In his first year assisting the Panthers’ special teams, Carolina
ranked second in the special teams ratings compiled by the Dallas
Morning News.

Three new signal callers make up the quarterback’s room at
One Bills Drive entering the 2013 season with veteran free agent
signing Kevin Kolb, 2013 first-round (16th overall) draft selection EJ
Manuel and undrafted free agent signing Jeff Tuel.
“We’re going to split the reps and get looks at both Kevin
and EJ with both crews, to see how they perform with that. We
haven’t really gotten in to detailed discussions about the
preseason, but again that’s another good point about how you
want to make sure we evaluate them. Again, our goal as coaches
is to make it fair for both players, not just at the quarterback
position but for other positions of competition. Really it relies on
the players to separate themselves” - DOUG MARRONE
Kevin Kolb (pronounced COBB) joined the Bills as a free agent
signing on April 8, 2013. Preparing to enter his seventh NFL season,
Kolb played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2007-10 prior to spending the last two years with the Arizona Cardinals.
Kolb has started 21-of-34 games played since entering the NFL
as a second-round (36th overall) draft selection of Philadelphia in
2007. The 6-3, 218-pound Houston product has completed 449-of755 passes for 5,206 yards with 28 touchdowns in his NFL career.
Entering the 2013 NFL Draft, many experts focused on the
quarterback position as being of need for the Bills. While on the clock
in the first round, Buffalo made a draft day trade with the St. Louis
Rams to move from the eighth overall slot to No. 16. With the 16th
overall choice the Bills announced Florida State product EJ Manuel as
their choice.
Manuel led Florida State to a 25-6 record as a starter – the
third-most wins in school history – and became the second quarterback in FBS history to win four consecutive bowl games (West
Virginia QB Pat White). He ended his career as the school’s all-time
leader in completion percentage (66.9) and ranks among the top five
in Seminoles history for passing yards (7,736 – 3rd), total offense
(8,563 – 3rd), completions (600 – 4th) and passing attempts (897 –
5th).
Jeff Tuel signed with Buffalo as a free agent after a storied collegiate career at Washington State. He appeared in 31 games, making
26 starts for the Cougars while completing 531-of-865 pass attempts
for 5,936 yards and 33 touchdowns. He finished his career in the
WSU record book first in completion percentage, fifth in completions, sixth in passing attempts, seventh in passing yards, seventh in
passing touchdowns, seventh in total offense (5,878) and eighth in
touchdowns responsible for (35).
