Box 514 Greencastle, IN 46135 Phone:765.653.4978 Fax: 765.653.6385 www.pcfoundation.org The year 2007 saw good things happen in the Putnam County community. Several new businesses became operational or neared completion; Ivy Tech Community College received approval to build a new facility in Greencastle; the DePauw Nature Park and Prindle Institute for Ethics became active; crop yields were good; and there were numerous examples of civic responsibility and community involvement. It was also a successful year of service and growth for the Community Foundation. Donors established 24 new funds. Twenty-one organizations continued building their endowments with assistance from matching grants from the Community Foundation. The Youth Philanthropy Committee began awarding grants to projects initiated by Putnam County youth. Attendees at the monthly Learning Series reported successfully using the information and tools they received. The Foundation’s investment portfolio earned more than $1.4 million for the community’s benefit. The Knoy Resource Center was recognized at the state level as a “promising practice.” The Community Foundation is pleased to celebrate all of our many community successes. At the same time it is important to honor and recognize the challenges and losses we experienced. The measure of a community – like the measure of a person – is found in the response to adversity and suffering. Time and time again, Putnam County citizens demonstrate a level of caring and support for each other that is truly remarkable. Time and time again, Putnam County citizens pull together unselfishly and accomplish amazing things. Time and time again, people turn personal tragedy into opportunities to inspire and strengthen others. We are grateful for the opportunity to share this yearbook commemorating some of the highlights of 2007. We are honored to celebrate the lives and contributions of those who continue to inspire and strengthen others. We are proud to be a part of this community. Thank you Putnam County! Sincerely, Murray F. Pride President M. Elaine Peck Executive Director 1 Putnam County Community Foundation Dear Friends and Neighbors: 765.653.4978 • www.pcfoundation.org Message from the President and Executive Director Making an impact Community Grants Program Making grants that make a difference is one of the most important activities of the Community Foundation. The grants on these pages are made possible through donations to unrestricted endowments administered by the Community Foundation. Grant applications are reviewed by an advisory committee consisting of local people who are knowledgeable of and involved in the community. Grants are awarded in all areas of the county and across a broad philanthropic spectrum. Grant making priorities are based upon input from the community and a periodic community needs assessment. For the last few years, the Community Foundation has focused its grant making power on economic development, educational attainment, health and fitness, non-profit capacity building, senior citizen issues, and transportation access. 2007 Annual Report Grant applications are available online at www.pcfoundation.org. Putnam County Community Foundation 2 In 2007, $375,000 was committed to the Ivy Tech Greencastle Campus from unrestricted endowments. Ivy Tech is the largest single grant beneficiary in the Community Foundation’s history. Because of unrestricted gifts from donors, Putnam County will benefit by having more post-secondary education opportunities close by. Business and industry will benefit from having a skilled work force, and local retail will benefit by students and faculty traveling into the county. “The Community Foundation has the power to make a difference in the community primarily through the generosity of donors who make unrestricted gifts.” Elaine Peck, Executive Director Putnam County Community Foundation Unrestricted Endowments Are Among Most Valuable As the primary philanthropic resource in the county, Foundation Directors are frequently called upon to respond to emerging community needs. From this perspective, unrestricted gifts and endowments are the most valuable, and the generosity of the individuals and organizations listed to the right deserves special recognition. The committee is composed of two representatives from each of the county’s four school corporations, a college representative, a 4-H representative, two at-large members, and up to four adults. “It has been very exciting to see the Youth Philanthropy Committee’s progression and the local youth groups’ projects become reality.” Ashlyn Archer, Co-Chair Youth Philanthropy Committee 2007 Annual Report 2007 Youth Philanthropy Grants Putnam County Community Foundation 4 Committee members encouraged other youth in the community to identify a need or project and develop a plan to address the need. Youth submitted formal written grant applications, including a budget, and also made a presentation to the Committee to explain their projects. The Committee evaluated proposals received and awarded $4,346 to youth led projects in 2007. Members began building an endowment to provide financial support for future grantmaking. In 2007, grand prize winner Josie Parent, wrote an essay called “In the Shadows,” about the good works of her father. “Although my dad’s name may never appear in lights, his time and money work in the shadows to bring a small light into others lives.” “Although my dad’s name may never appear in lights, his time and money work in the shadows to bring a small light into others’ lives.” Josie Parent, Grand Prize Winner 2007 Philanthropy Essay Contest Josie Parent accepts $500 check for North Putnam Middle School in her honor from Eric Wolfe of the Community Foundation. Also present are teacher Susan Trent, her father Doug Parent and Middle School Principal Terry Tippin. Josie was given the award after winning the 2007 Philanthropy Week Essay Contest for her essay about her father’s selfless and charitable acts. Toni Tomlinson, Program Coordinator 765.653.4978 • www.pcfoundation.org “In our second year, there was an increase in awareness of services we offer. Students come to the Center from Clay, Putnam, Morgan, Hendricks, and even Johnson County.” Increasing educational attainment The Knoy Resource Center The Knoy Resource Center, founded in 2006, is a community-school collaborative housed in Cloverdale High School. Partnerships between communities and their school corporations are correlated with increased performance of students, and the results of the Knoy Resource Center have been remarkable. “During our second year, nearly 100% of eligible 8th graders were enrolled in the 21st Century Scholarship Program,” said Toni Tomlinson, Coordinator of the Program. The Community Foundation is the fiscal sponsor of the project and chairs the Education Council, the governing body which provides oversight for the Center and its programs. The Center is a threeyear pilot project, with measurable goals related to increasing educational attainment and workforce skills. Due to the project’s success, and the interest expressed by other school corporations, the Education Council is seeking funding to continue and replicate the initiative in other schools. Top: Toni Tomlinson, Program Coordinator, in the Knoy Resource Center. Below: Students studying and receiving tutoring at the Knoy Resource Center. Putnam County Community Foundation 5 Increasing non-profit capacity The Non-Profit Learning Series Vibrant non-profit organizations are a hallmark of a successful community. The Putnam County Community Foundation offers ten workshops each year designed to support local churches, non-profit organizations and units of government moving to the next level of community service and leadership. The curriculum covers topics recommended by workshop attendees, such as strategic planning, board governance, marketing, development, event planning, and financial accountability. Grant-writing and individualized strategic planning sessions are offered upon request. To obtain the schedule of this year’s sessions and to register for a workshop, contact Eric Wolfe, Community Development Director at ewolfe@pcfoundation.org. “Without doubt, the Learning Series has raised the consciousness of local not-for-profit organizations, and has expanded understanding and skills regarding every type and level of giving. The spirit of shared interest and common commitment felt among the attendees at the series has been an added plus.” 2007 Annual Report Judge Sally H. Endowment Lois & Roxie Zeiner Memorial Endowment The Endowment Builder Program The Putnam County Community Foundation offers matching dollars to help Putnam County non-profits establish and/or build endowments for their own use. Participating organizations set a goal, have a plan, and complete their campaigns within one year. “All of the charities who have participated have been successful,” said Eric Wolfe, Community Development Director for the Community Foundation. “One organization stated that building an endowment helped them increase other types of revenue.” An endowment is an important element of a diversified revenue stream for a non-profit. Contributions to endowed funds are never spent. Instead they are invested in a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds, and a portion of the earnings is granted each year for the designated charitable purpose. In eighteen years, total grants from an endowed fund will have exceeded the original contribution, and the fund’s size will have nearly doubled. Since inception of the Community Foundation, average investment earnings, net of all fees, have been nearly 9%. To apply for an Endowment Builder grant, contact Eric Wolfe at ewolfe@pcfoundation.org. “The Endowment Builder matching funds and the training provided in conjunction with this effort have been of great value in helping us strive toward our goal of sustainability for Sycamore Trails RC&D Council.” Bud Sharp, President Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc Partnering with those who give ENDOWMENT PHILANTHROPIST ($500,000 - $999,999) Citizens Advisory Council for Industrial Development LANDMARK PHILANTHROPIST ($250,000 - $499,999) Alpha Gamma Delta - Eta Alumnae Chapter Putnam County Health Careers Foundation Orville & Frances Webb ESTATE PHILANTHROPIST ($100,000 - $249,999) Robert & Barbara Bowen Edward & Barbara Brookshire First Baptist Church Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church Henry Kolling Catherine T. Setting up a fund at the Community Foundation is free and simple, taking less than an hour in most cases. The Community Foundation exists to serve each and every donor and administers a variety of different types of funds from which donors may choose. Staff members are knowledgeable and devoted to creating the best giving vehicle for each person. In 2007, the Community Foundation helped individuals, families, and organizations start twenty-four new funds. The organization gathers and shares information, assisting caregivers in their duties as well as helping them maintain their own health and quality of life. It is the long-term vision of All-Caregivers Support Group to improve the quality of life for caregivers and to help ensure no one has to face caregiving alone. To help carry out this dream, a fund was established with the Putnam County Community Foundation on September 25, 2007. advised endowment Linda K. and Steven R. The primary purpose of the fund shall be to provide financial support to the Bainbridge Improvement Society, a not-for-profit agency under Code section 501(c)(3). Funds will be used for the general support of operations and projects of the Bainbridge Improvement Society. In 2002, the Society established a Community Center for the Town. In 2007, the Society purchased and installed a Community Center sign. Mary M. They previously lived in Martinsville, Indiana, where they both taught in the Martinsville school system. Christine and Howard are owners of Dino-Stor Storage in Greencastle and Stonecraft Minerals, a wholesale mail-order mineral business supplying caves, gift shops, and mineral collectors throughout the world. Both Christine and Howard believe strongly in the value of higher education. Recognizing the need for highly skilled scientists in the future, and knowing the financial burden that a college education can carry, they decided to establish two scholarships for graduating Cloverdale High School seniors who intend to go to college to pursue a science career. Bohmer Family Philanthropic Fund Lynn and Dave Bohmer were winners of the 2006 Spirit of Philanthropy Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Community Foundation. In 2007, the couple established a donor advised non-permanent charitable fund at the Community Foundation for the convenience and administrative support it provides for their charitable giving. Through the Community Foundation, the Bohmers support many of their favorite charities such as the United Way of Putnam County, and the Greencastle/Putnam County Development Center. Cloverdale Community School Corporation Endowment Habitat for Humanity Endowment Habitat for Humanity of Putnam County, Inc. brings people together to build decent, affordable housing for people in need. Building an endowment with matching dollars from the Community Foundation helps ensure Habitat for Humanity will be enabling neighbors to help each other in Putnam County for years to come. The organization is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, which is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, seeking to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Cindy and John Hennette Dental Scholarship Fund John Hennette, a dentist, and his wife, Cindy, own and operate Greencastle Pediatric Dentistry. Through their work, the couple became interested in assisting young people to pursue a career they have found to be so rewarding. Scholarships will be awarded to Putnam County residents, pursuing education in dentistry or dental hygiene programs. Robert and Kathryn Eccles Memorial Stewardship and Church Growth Endowment Taking advantage of the Community Foundation’s Endowment Builder Program, Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church established a fourth endowment for the benefit of the Church and memorialized a special couple in perpetuity. “Some of my parishioners are particularly passionate about one aspect of the Church,” said PT Wilson, Pastor of Gobin. “The Church has four endowments, each celebrating the lives of different people and supporting their various interests. These endowments have become vitally important to the Church’s overall financial health.” Heritage Preservation Society Endowment Founded in 1976 by Jack and Marian Cook, the mission of the Heritage Preservation Society is to promote and preserve Putnam County homes, buildings, districts, and heritage which are of historic, archeological, or architectural value. Further, the Society seeks to educate the public about these sites and structures and to collect, preserve, and display records of their uses and of the people who were active in their history. In 2007, the Society saved, disassembled, moved, and reconstructed a Putnam County log home from the late 1800s to Cloverdale City Park for future generations to learn from and enjoy. Lee Stewart spearheaded the initiative, and at the cabin’s dedication, he said, “This is a historic, useful structure that connects past, present and future generations.” Building an endowment with matching dollars from the Community Foundation ensures the Society will be connecting past, present and future generations for years to come. 11 Putnam County Community Foundation Toni Tomlinson and Michael Nees coordinate services provided through the Knoy Resource Center. The Nees and the Tomlinson families share a common goal: the success of students of the Cloverdale Community School Corporation 765.653.4978 • www.pcfoundation.org The Cloverdale Community School Corporation Endowment was founded by two local families: the Nees and Tomlinson families. The Nees family has lived in the Cloverdale area for generations. Like his father and grandfather before him, Michael Nees works in the Cloverdale Community School Corporation. Tom and Toni Tomlinson moved from Indianapolis in the early 1990s to give their children a better life in a small rural community, similar to their own beginnings. Ivy Tech Community College – Greencastle Campus Fund Contributions to this fund will provide furnishings and equipment for the new facility. The Community Foundation will match contributions from individuals dollar for dollar, and contributions from corporations will be matched at 33%. Ivy Tech Community College – Greencastle, Indiana Endowment Contributions to this fund will provide student scholarships and other support for the Greencastle Campus. The Community Foundation will match contributions at a rate of $1 for every $2 dollars donated. Jedele Family Endowment Bob and Jamie Jedele joined the Greencastle community in 1995, raising their four children and establishing Jedele Enterprises which owns five McDonald’s franchises in central Indiana. In 2007, the couple established a donor-advised endowment at the Community Foundation for the convenience and flexibility it provides for their charitable giving. The couple has many charitable interests and did not want to limit their choices at this time. 2007 Annual Report New funds established by Mary Louise Miller (June 6, 1909 to January 9, 2007) Putnam County Community Foundation 12 Mary Louise Miller wanted to support causes she loved, rather than allowing state and federal governments make the decisions for her. Her attorney was the first to alert Mary Lou to the fact that she “had a problem” that could be helped with charitable gift planning. With planning and professional management of a charitable remainder trust, Miss Miller was able to take care of herself throughout her long life, plus grow her assets, eventually allowing nine charities to receive more than $1.3 million through the Putnam County Community Foundation! With her CRT, Mary Lou established five new endowments, described below. American Red Cross – Putnam County Unit Endowment Mary Lou established an endowment for the Putnam County Unit of the American Red Cross to help ensure that people in Putnam County would have help during times of crisis or disaster. Mary Louise Miller Scholarship Endowment for DePauw University Mary Lou taught at DePauw University from 1942 until her retirement in 1974. At DePauw, Mary Lou headed the women’s physical education department from 1960 to 1974 and held the rank of full professor from 1965 to 1974. The Community Foundation will ensure that scholarships are awarded each year in perpetuity in Mary Lou’s name to a full-time female student at DePauw University. Mary Louise Miller Scholarship Endowment for Heidelberg College Mary Lou taught physical education and chemistry at Heidelberg College from 1935 to 1942. The Community Foundation will ensure that scholarships are awarded each year in perpetuity in Mary Lou’s name to a full-time female student at Heidelberg College, Ohio. Mary Louise Miller Scholarship Endowment for Rockford College A 1930 graduate of Rockford College in Illinois, Mary Lou received her Master’s Degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1935. The Community Foundation will ensure that scholarships are awarded each year in perpetuity in Mary Lou’s name to a full-time female student at Rockford College. Second Congregational United Church of Christ Endowment Born June 6, 1909, in Rockford, Illinois, Mary Lou was the daughter of M. Sumner and Harriet Miller. Although she had lived away from her family’s church since 1930, Mary Lou faithfully stayed in contact, never failing to read the weekly church newsletter. Through the endowment, the Community Foundation will continue to support Mary Lou’s family’s church in perpetuity. Mary M. Moore Scholarship Endowment for Indiana State University Mary M. Moore graduated from Brazil High School in 1946 and became the first member of her family to venture off to college. Beginning her college experience at Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis), she earned a degree in elementary education in 1958 from Indiana State University and taught school for 30 years. Although she retired from teaching in 1987, Ms. Moore has not lost her love for education and her desire to help others learn and succeed. So, in 2005, she established the Mary M. Moore Scholarship Fund to help financially-needy students attend the University of Indianapolis. In 2007, she established a scholarship endowment to help students attend Indiana State University. Mary Murphey Nall Agricultural Scholarship Although not yet a reality, a small group of visionary people established an account at the Community Foundation to collect and hold contributions for a community and recreation center in the future. Putnam County Memorial Endowment for Cancer Research The Putnam County Memorial Cancer Research Fund was established by a Greencastle couple in memory of their daughter, who lost her battle with cancer at a young age. The couple imagines the fund serving as a means for collecting, honoring, and preserving the memories of loved ones who struggled to survive cancer, but also a means to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors. Grants from the endowment will be awarded to cancer research institutions. Putnam County Public Library Author Series Endowment There is nothing quite like the experience of meeting the author of a great book or hearing an author read in his or her own voice the story he has chosen to tell. In 2007, with assistance of matching support from the Community Foundation, the Directors of the Putnam County Public Library established an endowment to provide general financial support for the Author Lecture Series of the Putnam County Public Library, Greencastle, Indiana. Linda K. and Steven R. Raines Endowment Linda and Steve Raines retired from their careers as educators, but they have not retired from learning, traveling and being involved in the community. In 2007, the couple established a donor-advised endowment at the Community Foundation for the convenience and flexibility it provides for their charitable giving. The couple has a wide variety of interests and concerns and supports many different charities each year. 13 Putnam County Community Foundation Putnam County Community and Recreation Center Fund 765.653.4978 • www.pcfoundation.org The Mary Murphey Nall Agricultural Scholarship was established by George and Elizabeth Murphey in honor of his late sister. Scholarship recipients must be incoming freshmen or undergraduate students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at Murray State University in Graves County, Kentucky. Mr. Murphey and his family were originally from Graves County, Kentucky. In 1957, Greencastle was fortunate to have the couple join the community, where they have been active contributors since their arrival. Create Your Legacy The Legacy Society honors visionaries whose foresight and generosity will shape the future of our community. Legacy gifts may benefit any charitable cause or organization, and are made by designating a fund at the Community Foundation as a beneficiary of a will, retirement plan, life insurance policy, or trust. 2007 Annual Report As a Legacy Society member, you share a commitment with others to make our community the best it can be. Join your friends and neighbors and forever memorialize your family or business name with permanent support for our community. If you have already included the Community Foundation as a beneficiary in your estate plans, please let us know. Please note: The endowments and other funds administered by the Community Foundation might not make grants in a particular year. If it were a Saturday, he would tell me he was doing errands, shuttling his kids, coming home from the movies or the golf course. His cell phone would lose its signal, and then he’d call me back. If it were a day in January or February, he would mention his birthday (in March) at least once, possibly more. If he said he was coming home, I knew he meant Greencastle. Sometimes he would talk about his children; sometimes he would talk about how his business had grown; sometimes he would talk about the places he lived or visited. And sometimes he would talk about home, about the stories we’d heard from our parents and grandparents, about our ancestors who had come to Indiana more than a century before we were born and turned wilderness into thriving farms and towns. And although we don’t make communities today in the same way as in the 1800s, we do make them, and Rob was committed to doing his part. He especially wanted to have a legacy at home, that would both reflect and continue the values he’d been taught. Zachary Grammel Indiana University Chelsey Mann Purdue University The Lyon Family Scholarship Founded by Robert Lyon in 2003, the Lyon Family Scholarship program seeks to increase the educational attainment and per capita income of Putnam County residents. Renewable scholarships valued at up to $10,000 per year are awarded to Putnam County adults and youth who wish to increase their marketability in Putnam County by furthering their education at vocational schools, community colleges, and traditional universities. To say Rob was an avid learner would be an understatement, so creating a program centered on education made the most sense to him. He believed that educating individuals who live and work in Putnam County would benefit the whole county. That was another side of Rob: he insisted on getting the biggest bang for his buck. Rob intended for the Lyon Family Scholarship program to outlive him, but he also expected to have many years of involvement with the Lyon Scholars. He was as interested in the candidates as he was in his own children and friends. He looked forward to meeting them and talking with them, and, I am sure, finding more ways to help them. He was disappointed, last summer, not to make a trip to Greencastle, and he was pleased and touched that his home town honored his contributions with the Spirit of Philanthropy Award. Rachel Woodall Indiana University Robert Bennett Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Jacki Secrest Indiana State University Christian Pitts Indiana State University Even though he left Putnam County, Putnam County never left his heart. The scholarship provides full tuition, fees and a stipend for books and supplies, for four years of undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in Indiana.
