Wildlife Federation Notes The B.C. Wildlife Federation has a membership of about 38,000 people and is the largest group in the province representing the citizenry to government in terms of wildlife and habitat conservation and management. The Federation also plays a significant role in providing the impetus for those with an interest in outdoor activities to actually experience the outdoors. Becoming An Outdoor Woman (BOW) This program has an international scope in offering to women the opportunity to learn about and experience a wide variety of outdoor activities. Women’s interest and presence in all aspects of outdoor activity not only provides a focus for the lives for themselves and their families but is paramount in the drive to preserve and enhance all that is the natural environment. For the year 2012 the BOW program will be offered at Lake Cowichan from June 01 to 03. To attend one must be 19 years or older. Within each of the broad categories of fishing, shooting and hunting, and outdoor recreational skills, a variety of courses will be offered. One pre-selects the courses wanted. The BOW weekend is offered as an all-inclusive package. Visit the BCWF website for details. 5 VICTORIA FISH AND GAME PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION NEWS BULLETIN JANUARY 2012 AUGUST 2007 NOVEMBER 2006 Outdoor Passport The BCWF has put considerable thought and effort into creating a means whereby its members can access private lands or cross private lands to access crown lands in following their outdoor interests. To qualify for a passport one must take a course and write an exam. To write the exam one must be a BCWF member. This program was started in the Interior and, as far as I know, has yet to take hold on the Island. Hopefully, our time will come. BCWF AGM 2012 For the year 2012 the Annual General Meeting will be held in Courtenay from April 25 to 28. This convention typically is very well organized and offers an exposure to the impressive depth and range of the activities and goals of individuals and clubs that are the BCWF. Lottery The BCWF is conducting a lottery to raise funds for conservation projects throughout the province in partnership with BCWF member clubs. There are six prizes ranging from a 2011 Yamaha Grizzly 550 ATV to a $500 gift certificate from Italian Sporting Goods. Ten thousand tickets will be available at a cost of $10.00 each. One must be 19 years + to purchase a ticket. Prawn Closures If your prawn fishing takes you away from SE Vancouver Island the following sub-area closures have been announced: Nanaimo 17-13,15 Quadra Island 13-12,16,17 Lund 15-2,3 Malaspina Strait, Lower Jervis Inlet 16-1,2,10,16,17,18 Narrows, Salmon Inlets 16-7,8 Alberni Canal 23-1 Tahsis/Tlupana 25-1,8,16 Halibut The Pacific Halibut Commission has announced the recommendation that harvest for 2012 be reduced by 1,000,000 pounds. To maintain the public harvest during 2011 would require the public quota being increased to 15% of the total allowed harvest. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Bob Macdonald 6 VICTORIA FISH AND GAME PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION NEWS BULLETIN JANUARY 2012 AUGUST 2007 NOVEMBER 2006 MALAHAT MARAUDER TURKEY SHOOT NOV. 27 & 27 The black powder Turkey shoot was hosted by the Malahat Marauders on November 19. Eighteen shooters took part, and with twenty prizes available, and a number of draws, most went home with something. Our renowned chef, Perry, came up with a fine lunch included in the entry, and some stayed on for a potluck dinner. A brave few camped over the two nights, so there was some socializing on into the evening as well. The shotgun event was scheduled for Sunday, but all present decided that it was just too d___ rainy for that, so the prizes were drawn for. As usual, many thanks to those who did the work.
