The Campbell - Campbell
Campbell The Lockstitch Sewing Machine Made in the USA since 1882 Designed in the 1880’s, this machine revolutionized the industry and established the standard for other leather machines to follow. It was the first needle and awl machine successfully produced, and now over 120 years later, the Campbell is still known as the best heavy leather stitcher built. This reputation has been grown through years of outstanding quality and dependable service. The Campbell is the workhorse of the largest manufactures and the smallest custom shops. The machine is known for its tight, uniform stitch on both the top and bottom of the material. It has been the choice of the world’s finest saddle, harness, and holster makers for over 100 years. As a machine that was designed for leather, the Campbell succeeds where other machines fail. Through thick and thin, over layers and up inclines, the Campbell continues to maintain a uniform stitch due to the simple, square-feed awl design. What is a Needle and Awl Machine? The Campbell is a needle and awl machine designed for leather. The awl is set in the head of the machine and the needle mechanism in the base. The awl punches a hole through the leather as it descends, then the awl feeds the leather forward. A barbed needle raises and pulls the thread through for the lock, as the awl again descends for another stitch. This process assures uniform feeding and stitching, without the flex and needle breakage inherent in needle feed machines. This produces the best quality stitch for leather goods; however it is not recommended for nylon webbing. The Campbell HIGH LIFT Locksitch Sewing Machine Engineered for the toughest applications The High Lift is a modified version of the Campbell Lockstitch, designed to accomadate extra heay duty sewing applications that require tight seams or hard materials. It has all the same features of the standard Campbell, but inludes an extra 3/8” lift, increased stroke, and special parts for even more clearence. This specialized machine has been especially useful for applications like heavy-duty harness, bare-back riggings, stitching saddle cantales, and more. Attach to the Arch Cover (SR-89). The throat plate knife is used for cutting channel on bottom of leather. The Presser Foot with Knife (SR-205) is used for cutting channel in top of leather. Increasing or decreasing pressure on the Presser Foot Spring (SR-579) enables the operator to cut a channel of greater or less depth. The rounds leather must be fitted for the machine carefully, in that it must be cut and folded uniformly. If fitted unevenly, the leather will cause the guides on the Work Gauge (SR-254) and Throat Plate (SR-206A) to interfere with the machine feed while sewing the leather for your rounds.
