News:
The 2016 season is knocking at our door and thankfully, our winter has not been as
brutal as in the last 2 years. There are changes afoot in our club and they are all in keeping
with the tenets of purpose and spirit of the VSCCA.
The VSCCA will be launching our new website sometime in March. The release will
be in two phases. The first is the basic informational website phase. The second phase will
be a members only section which will be passworded. In this section, a technical forum to
be moderated by Santo Spadaro and a section where members will be able to register for
events electronically is planned. We are very excited about the new look and projected
functionality and hope to have the second phase functional by the time of the SS. As this is
an incredibly daunting project, patience from the membership would be most welcome. In
the interim, please use the usual methods of registering for events. The individuals that have
been on the website committee and have committed large sums of time and effort are Roger
Morse, Ed Hyman, Joe Fuller and Joseph DeLucia.
With our new year, Election ballots along with your dues notices will soon arrive. In a
three year period, the makeup of the BOD changed dramatically. Working cooperatively and
diligently, your BOD has instituted a simple health exam for wheel to wheel events only,
committed funds toward the redesign of our website, developed a more sophisticated
understanding on the costs of running our club, digitalized our records, continued to publish
1 of 6
a quarterly award winning magazine, accepted all years of Formula Junior Cars and has
expanded acceptance to rare or unusual cars up to 1965.
We are a unique and close knit club. Your BOD have all committed countless hours of
time and done a hard job magnificently through the years simply for the love of what our
club has stood for the last 60 of them. Whomever is elected to the BOD needs to commit to
maintaining that very spirit for the future.
Ben Bragg has been asked to serve as head the Car Classification Committee
(CCC) and a new list of eligible cars will be published as soon as possible. Cars that are not
on the list will be reviewed by the CCC and, if indicated, voted on by the entire BOD at our
regular meetings as to the eligibility of the car. Representatives from the CCC will be at all
wheel to wheel venues. Please remember that you must first apply for a log book prior to
showing up at an event. As there are now several new classes of VSCCA Approved cars,
please apply for a log book NOW. If your application for a log book for your car has been
accepted, you will be permitted to run that car in a scheduled VSCCA event in order to have
it inspected by a member of the CCC at that event. A signed off inspection must be done
prior to receiving a log book.
Mark Lefferts is now our Chief Scrutineer. Modifications beyond the capability of
what was originally available on our cars, save of course safety modifications, will be
frowned upon by our scrutineers and duly reported to the CCC. If in doubt, please discuss
your modifications with either Mark or Ben prior to modifying your car in order to avoid
disappointment.
Dr. Robert Mirabile now joins Charles Bordin on the Driver Qualification
Committee. Aside from being a practicing physician and able to answer some basic medical
issues relating to our health certification requirements, he is a very big proponent of our way
of driving as well as promoting safe, respectful competition. Welcome and thank you Bob.
The VSCCA’s adoption of certification of medical health for wheel to wheel events
(ONLY) is mandatory staring this year. Very few VSCCA members attempting to get this very
simple form signed by their GP have run into issues regarding the eye portion of the
examination. If you had an eye exam within a two year period, ask your ophthalmologist /
optometrist to give you the results of your sight correction on a prescription pad. That will be
sufficient for your GP to certify your eyesight based on the information from your
ophthalmologist /optometrist.
The Season Pass has been reinstated. The cost of the pass is $2,100 and will allow
entry into all venues except the Historics. Meals not included in entry fees are additional.
Remittance of the Season Pass fee must be made prior to the start of the first event.
Regarding Dunlop Tyres, according to Phil Lamont, “production is picking up “ and
2016 should finally represent an end to the Dunlop fiasco with most sizes readily available
by the time the racing season is here. Place your orders now with your favourite stockist to
get on the list.
New on this years’ calendar is a welcome Dead of Winter Social Gathering headed
by Chris Towner with a special invitation to the Sandwich Heritage Museum in
Sandwich, MA, located only sixty miles from Boston, to view their wonderful car collection.
VSCCA members and their friends have an EXCLUSIVE private invitation January 30 and
are to meet on the museum grounds at 10;00 AM. Our guest host and tour
guide is Dave McGraw who looks after the vehicles, and is a well know automotive
restorer and Harley Davidson collector. The facility is located not far from the town
2 of 6
center, a few miles out on the Route 6 / Mid Cape Hwy. After our visit, lunch is set to take
place at The British Beer Company restaurant located in downtown Sandwich.
Please confirm your intentions ASAP.
This year’s Tech Session will be held in Pennsylvania, chaired by Pat Valerio. VSCCA
member Dr. Bob Mirabile is hosting this event and it promises to be memorable as his car
collection is large, varied with vehicles at high levels of restoration. You do not want to miss
this. The lecture alone will be worth the trip.
Pocono has been deleted from the calendar. This is no reflection on the excellent job
Ryan Smith has done during his tenure but rather the time of year, the financial losses
incurred and it’s proximity to the Spring Sprints. Please join me in thanking Ryan and the
sacrifices he made in trying to constantly improve Pocono. Ryan has graciously consented
to taking on other volunteer positions in our club so all is not lost. Thank you Ryan and
Candice.
The VSCCA Driver’s School will be held this year May 6 and 7 at our first wheel to
wheel event, the Spring Sprints.
Steve Chisolm and Jean Petryshyn have stepped down from managing the course
marshals. Jim Bottomley has taken up the mantle of this important task. Our thanks go both
to Jean and Steve for their long tenure in this vital position as well as Jim in accepting the
role organizing the various volunteers, without whom, we WOULD NOT be able to participate
in our events. If you wish to be close to the action without driving and help in these tasks,
please contact Jim. If you are a racer that has never been at a flagging station, helping out
at a race your are not driving in lends a very different perspective to what is going on at the
track. I promise your driving abilities will improve. Your volunteerism will be appreciated
more than you can imagine, especially by those who already do so much for the VSCCA.
Obituaries - One of the greatest, if not the greatest, pleasures of our club is the
people we befriend during our years of membership in the VSCCA. If you are close to any of
our fellow members that have gone to their final reward, please let me know so I may
communicate this to the general membership in my regular bulletins.

Obituaries
David Belden - VSCCA Competition Number 215 - Long time VSCCA member David Beldin
passed away on January 7th, 2016. He belonged to many automotive clubs and was
especially proud of over fifty years membership in the Sports Car Club of America where he
spent many years both racing and officiating as a course marshal. Jean Petryshyn said of him
“Our best instructor for new workers. Always mellow but precise. He will be sadly missed”.
Scott Terry - VSCCA Competition Number 94 - Died November 10th of 2015 from
complications of cancer. He can be remembered driving his 1959 Alfa with much skill. He
had a wry sense of humor and wasn’t afraid to prank someone. He rode a modern Harley
and not timid to do so in any kind of weather. A close friend of Keith Goring and Susan
Dixon, he could be found with them in the flea market at the Historics.
The VSCCA is the lesser for their passing.
